This home in Galesburg, IL has gotten an entirely new look in nearly every room. Say goodbye to all that golden oak and hello to a stylish new refreshed update! There was so much transformation throughout this home and we wanted to highlight a few of the updates here in a featured post. Let’s begin in the kitchen. This home has a wonderful layout and already boasts an open concept feel that most new homes have. The oak woodwork, trim, and surfaces were in desperate need of an update.
This Galesburg family worked closely with a team at Village Home Stores on design, layout, and product selections that make you honestly feel like you are in a brand new home. For example, take a peek at the trim above the doorways in the above images. We removed the dated wood corner rosettes and built a new doorway topper design that is transitional in style. With so many doorways and windows in the home, this detail change really made a big impact throughout the entire property. Our Koch Cabinetry in the Bristol doorstyle has been painted in a bright “White” paint for the kitchen perimeter. The kitchen island repeats the same doorstyle in a Birch wood and “Stone” stain.
The kitchen is spacious and packed with great cabinet storage. The new kitchen island design includes an overhang on the back side with seating space for three. The front of the island faces the sink wall and includes centered large stack of pots and pans drawers with hidden top utensil slide out. Sliding shelves in one end cabinet and a pullout waste basket on the other end.
The L-shape of the layout includes a french door refrigerator and the cooking zone. This suite of appliances from our Whirlpool line also includes a microwave hood, dishwasher, and double oven range all in a fingerprint-resistant Stainless Steel finish. The electric double oven range has True Convection features in the lower oven and allows you to cook at two temperatures at once. The top oven cavity also has a very fast preheat.
The original kitchen had a similar perimeter layout, but the kitchen island was awkward in shape and location. The new rectangle design frames in the kitchen and allows those seated at the island to not have their backs entirely to the nearby dinette and great room. The area above the kitchen sink was updated as well. We bridged the cabinet space on either side of the window together with a valance, shelf, and crown molding.
One of the other transformation stories we want to share in the feature is the main view upon entering the home. The original entry had a oak-on-oak-on-oak staircase. The new owners of this home wanted a more updated look and a practical stairway surface for their young children and pet. We reworked this stairwell to include a carpeted runner and a two-tone white and warm gray stain similar to the kitchen design.
Durian Builders and the Village Home Stores team worked to create a design for this family inspired by many ideas found online. We want to help our customers truly get the home of their dreams. This doesn’t mean that every idea you show us from Pinterest or Houzz will be within your budget, but we will do our best to help explore any option you are wanting to discuss. If you love using these online platforms for inspiration be sure o follow Village Home Stores here on Pinterest and here on Houzz.
We think that the new staircase looks better than any of the ideas that inspired it! The carpeting on these stairs was also installed throughout the home. It is our Dream Weaver carpet in the Reflections II series and “Sageview” color. We installed in in the bedrooms, hallways, closets, and bonus/playroom space (cute dog not included in carpet purchase from Village Home Stores).
The entire album of photos from this completed home are now posted to our portfolio here on houzz.com. There you can see more of this stunning new kitchen plus get a peek at the bathrooms, mudroom locker, and laundry room. How about you? Are you looking for a team that can help you remodel an existing home and bring it to new life for you and your family? Village Home Stores may be the perfect fit! We work in so many cities surrounding our Geneseo, IL showroom. Have questions about our process and what steps you will take to get an estimate from our team? Be sure to watch this episode our weekly TV show where we discuss that process in detail. When you are ready for an appointment, just reach out at (309) 944-1344.
During the holiday season, we love to share recent kitchen designs that are great spaces for entertaining. This week’s featured project is a remodeled Coal Valley, Illinois kitchen that is a holiday hosting dream. This spacious kitchen is perfect for entertaining! A U-shaped kitchen layout with a peninsula and dual-level kitchen island. Plus another wall of pantry, fresh food storage, and display cabinets are also within the same room. Step on in and take a look around with us.
Each corner of the kitchen layout includes a tall cabinet with built-in appliances. As you face the main U-shape layout, the left corner is home to a built in microwave and raised dishwasher (shown below). This kitchen remodel was completed keeping as close to the original layout as possible. Why? These gorgeous floors were already installed and in great condition! The original kitchen included a 15″ wide trash compactor unit. In the new design, we instead installed a built-in KitchenAid ice maker. With a water line already accessible in the neighboring corner for the dishwasher, this revised appliance option is ideal for the existing layout.
In the other corner of the kitchen, we installed a double wall oven unit. This 500 series wall oven includes True Convection options. This provides consistent heating and even cooking to ensure there are no burnt edges or under-cooked centers. The temperature probe delivers accurate measurement of internal temperatures of meats, poultry, and casseroles without needing to open the oven. Built-in appliances in a corner can add a lot of interest in look and function. We love how this layout offers up open landing space for the oven items on each side and behind the user at the island.
Speaking of open counter space, the span connecting the U-shape is wide open for prep, service, or decor. This length of counter can be used so many ways. Make a mess? No problem! Clean up is a breeze because there are no grout lines in the kitchen backsplash. A full height slab of matching “Calacatta Laza” quartz surface is installed keeping a clean and consistent look.
Our quartz surfaces are expertly measured, templated, fabricated, and installed. We can even arrange to have cutouts made for your outlets and switches. In this kitchen design we installed our Radiant switches and outlets in a “Nickel” finish. When you work with a lighting expert at Village Home Stores we can help you to select a complimenting finish for your outlets, switches, and covers. Nothing can rob attention from a beautiful kitchen and backsplash quite like disruptively basic outlets dotting across it. This radiant series dresses up the look of any wall switch or outlet.
The right decor and accents can truly make a space! That is absolutely true in the case of the MacKenzie Childs Courtly Check pattern items displayed throughout this new kitchen. The white on white kitchen provides the perfect backdrop for the playfully patterned collection of this homeowner. Shown below is an iconic checkered teapot resting on a 5 burner gas cooktop centered in the dual-level kitchen island.
When you are making selections for a kitchen design there are so many details to be decided. When you work with Village Home Stores we are with you every step of the way. Our designers can help keep you on track, on budget, and guide your choices all with that final finished vision in mind. One detail that can really chance the look of a counter surface is the edge style that you choose. In this Coal Valley kitchen, an “Ogee” edge style was applied to the counter surfaces.
The profile choice on your counter surfaces can add more curves and edges for light to reflect. In this kitchen design, the island counter surfaces look perfectly highlighted and framed in by the “Ogee” edge. We must also mention that the finished space had another very cute black and white accent piece that is featured front and center in the image below:
That’s Martini and she just loves her new kitchen from Village Home Stores. She makes a cameo in so many of these photos we figured a proper intro was in order. The wall opposite the U-shape is home to a tall pantry cabinet, built in refrigerator, and a pair of refrigerated drawers. The main refrigerator is 48″ wide and the set of refrigerated drawers to the left are 24″ wide.
There is a small extension of base and wall cabinets on the other end. Normally this counter surface would become a drop zone for mail, keys, and charging devices. But we hid all of that in the top drawer out of sight! While we can’t design a kitchen that is resistant to clutter or piles… we can suggest better storage solutions for you!
Of course any painted kitchen looks even brighter when it is illuminated by our bestselling Diode LED tape lighting. In this Coal Valley Quad Cities home we installed the low-profile system in three applications: undercounter lighting, in-cabinet lighting, and above cabinet lighting. The look is amazing and with such a low voltage use, this system is the perfect ambient lighting to leave on as much as you would like!
This project was managed start to finish by Village Home Stores using our Complete Project Management Program. This step-by-step process allows us to keep our remodel customers on track and on budget for their home projects with us. You can learn more about our process and see more in-depth tours of the remodels we are completing in the Quad Cities area by watching our weekly TV show. Watch it every Sunday morning on WQAD at 10am or catch past episodes online, anytime on YouTube. Just type “Village Home Show” into the search bar.
The cabinetry in this kitchen is from our Koch Cabinetry line in the “Easton” raised panel door and “Ivory” white painted finish. Want to see more of this gorgeous finished kitchen? The cabinet handles are from Jeffery Alexander’s Sullivan series in the “Brushed Pewter” finish. The appliance package is from our KitchenAid line and many of the built-in unites can be ordered in other sizes if needed. Shop our Local Low Price Guaranteed on all appliances online, anytime here at villagehomestores.com For this remodel we did keep the original flooring… but that didn’t stop us from making some big changes to the flow of the room and nearby spaces. We removed an archway that used to divide the kitchen from the nearby sunroom. By removing that section of arched wall, we were able to extend the kitchen peninsula for more storage and seating (see below).
We also removed some walls and doorways for that mentioned sunroom. Now the flow of the social spaces in this home all feels more open and inviting. We can easily picture this kitchen packed with holiday guests. What a stunning space. Our thanks to these amazing customers for choosing to work with us and for allowing us to come pet Martini one last time and snap some photos to share with you. There is a reason why painted white kitchens have remained a best-selling choice in our industry for so many years. They offer a timeless look and are right at home in many different styles of spaces. When you build a home there are so many selections to be made. With the rise of “open concept” layouts, the pressure is on to create a cohesive space of the kitchen, dining, and living spaces of a home. A great way to allow yourself unlimited options for furnishings in these spaces is to select a neutral painted kitchen cabinet as a backdrop. This beautiful new home built by Kerkhoff Homes LLC of the Quad Cities has a neutral kitchen design that allows every element to be showcased.
Painted “Ivory” white cabinetry from our Koch Classic line is installed as the perimeter cabinetry in this kitchen design. A flat-panel “Bristol” door and Q Quartz “Calacatta Verona” countertops create a gallery effect allowing the appliances and lighting to stand out and be noticed in the completed design. A great example of this is the Kichler “Moorgate” linear light that hangs above the kitchen island. A stunning combination of matte black, brass, and glass. The look is great!
That black detail is also carried into the accent paint on the kitchen island cabinetry in the same “Bristol” doorstyle. The dark painted island anchors to the flooring and keeps the remainder of the kitchen feeling open and airy. On one wall of the kitchen design you find two tall pantry cabinets and a built-in Stainless Steel refrigerator. Grouping these elements together in one location keeps the rest of the kitchen open.
Including the refrigerator in this bank of pantry cabinets also helps to keep the scale of the large built-in unit to seem more at place. This Viking built-in is a 42″ wide side x side Quiet Cool model. Did you know that Village Home Stores is home to the largest Viking Range showroom space in the region? We are! We also are your expert Viking Range appliance service team.
One of the benefits of choosing Viking for your high-end appliance package is that you can build a complete appliance package all within the Viking brand. That means your badges, handles, finish, and control panel details will all marry to each other seamlessly. Speaking of handles, we love the contrast of cabinet hardware in this kitchen design. The Ivory cabinetry has a dark Amerock handle in a “Black Bronze” finish and the Black island cabinetry has a “Gilded Bronze” finish.
On the other wall of the kitchen design you find the cooking zone. A large commercial style range and a custom wood range hood cabinet above. Our kitchen design team can work with you to design the perfect hood design for your space. To get the best look and price for our customer, we actually had this hood designed and built by our custom Amish cabinetry line.
We then had the hood custom painted to match the kitchen cabinetry for a seamless look. Subway tile would look right at home in this design but we love the added texture from the tile selected here. A 3″ x 6″ Rittenhouse subway tile in “Arctic White” is installed with a beveled tile edge. This adds texture from the shadowing and keeps with the tone-on-tone concept of the kitchen design.
Having that complete appliance package from Viking is a wonderful thing, but of course Viking is known for their dynamic cooking appliances. This Viking® Professional 5 Series 48″ Pro Style Gas Range in Stainless Steel has 6.1 cu. ft. total capacity in the two ovens. An infrared broiler locks in all the savory juices of even the thickest porterhouse with the intense heat searing meats and fish locking in juices. Yum!
On top of this range you find eight burners each with the Pro-Sealed burner system. Up to 18,500 BTUs and infinite settings of easy-to-clean high performance sealed burners. A combination of this unique patented burner and surface design provides clean-ability plus superior performance at any temperature setting.
A great lighting plan is a key element to any successful design. This great room is an incredible example of that goal achieved! The kitchen itself is lit by spaced can lighting, that great island light, and undercabinet lighting. We can’t stress it enough how important undercabinet lighting is in a kitchen. Please please please include it within your project budget. We have never had a customer regret that decision. In fact, it is usually among the first things mentioned when we ask what they love about their finished space.
Within sight of the kitchen there are many other light fixtures. Just because you have a need for many fixtures all in one space DOESN’T mean they all have to be from the same page in a lighting catalog! That’s why we have our expert lighting staff on hand to help you select the perfect grouping of lights. This room combines many brands and styles into one curated collection. The dining area is at the end of the kitchen and a nook/sunroom is found just beyond that.
The dining area is lit by a 6-light chandelier in a black finish. This is the “Monroe” light from our Golden Lighting line. Did you know that you can shop our lighting options online at anytime? Just head here and shop the many options we have for you! You can save some of your favorites and reach out to our team to have them help you find the right price and style for what you are looking for. Our lighting customers have found over the years that purchasing from a lighting showroom is the best way to insure that you have the right style and size of fixture and will have everything you need on hand when you are ready to install it.
We love the interesting shadows that the sunroom/nook light casts throughout the day. This caged style of a semi-flush pendant is a combination of black and brass finishes and is named “Aldergate” from our Kichler line. If you love this light, you should also check out the wall sconces, tall foyer fixture, and other pendant sizes available.

As you walk through the rooms in your home, do you ever wish a doorway was wider or that a wall could just magically disappear? Giving you that “open concept” you see on all of your favorite HGTV shows? Well we can’t just wiggle our nose and make a wall disappear… but we do know the right reliable crews who can do it safely for you. Plus we can design a complete and finished look for your spaces. This Bettendorf Iowa home was more than just a kitchen remodel story. We widened doorways, removed walls, and gave these homeowners a more open and brighter space.
What a difference material selection can make in a new kitchen. The original kitchen in this home was a small design with an eat-in dining space. Dark wood cabinets and dark countertops boxed in the space with a U-shaped peninsula layout. The new layout removes that peninsula divide and uses the entire kitchen and casual dining space. Bright white painted cabinetry for the main perimeter of the kitchen helps to lighten the entire look and keep the new kitchen feeling bright and spacious.
What a dramatic difference from the original kitchen! We installed a section of taller cabinetry on the opposite end where the casual dining area was. Now it is home to a deep pantry cabinet, a counter-depth french door refrigerator, and built in wall oven and microwave. Keeping all of these deeper, and taller elements together allows the main kitchen “L-shape” to feel more open and spacious for the users near the sink and range wall.
Dura Supreme Cabinetry is painted White with a Pewter Accent Glaze and a decorative cabinet design on the end of the window wall includes glass inserts. A unique circle-shaped mullion door detail (shown below) is added to the top section of the doors and an open wine shelf is found on the bottom. Have limited space but want a customized cabinet layout? Our kitchen design team can make the most of your space with usable and stylish storage solutions that fit your space and budget.
Keeping the kitchen light and bright is a marble-look engineered quartz countertop selection from our Cambria Quartz collection. The stunning Skara Brae design gives the classic look of a marbled pattern with wide veins of warm grays. As a contrast to all of the white, a rich dark wood floor from our Bella Cera line has been installed throughout the new main floor of this home.
A Hickory Monte Viso floor in varied widths is now installed in the front entry, formal dining room, new kitchen, hallway, the living room, and hearth room. One key to a successful multi-room remodel is to try and keep a consistent flooring surface that marries all the spaces together. We also added custom window shades to all of the rooms we worked in. Our best-selling Transitions shades may seem like a modern style, but they look right at home in any space! This gorgeous traditionally-styled kitchen is a great example of that.
This style of shade allows you such versatile options for privacy and light. You can set them at any position that works for you with full or partial overlaps. Ask about the many colors, sizes, and options for these shades. We even offer cordless features like voice, and remote-controlled shades. Press play below to see the shades in this home in action.
The decorative valance above the kitchen sink is complimented by the wood hood and decorative mantle details above the cooking zone of the new design. Don’t want a metal hood as a part of your dream kitchen? You are not alone! We design many spaces using a wood hood cabinet with a blower insert installed within it. This allows the wall cabinet design to include the decorative hood instead of be disrupted by it. Want to see more examples of hood designs? Check out this board on our Pinterest page.
You have many options for how we can style this wood hood cabinet. In this kitchen we included beautiful carved wood corbels and a detailed shelf above the valance. These selections look even better with the Pewter accent glaze applied to help enhance all of the details. Including a shallow shelf like this above the cooktop provides a ledge for home accessories as well. Imagine this hood with a small sign or artwork leaning, or even a wreath or garland during the holidays.
The tile wall surfaces in this kitchen take the warm taupes and gray tones from the quartz counters and applies a glossy texture to the wall. A classic 3″ x 6″ subway tile shape is the man backsplash tile. This “Pardo” tile is from our Jeffrey Court line and the accent space above the cooktop is a Glazzio starburst series mosaic named “Kepplers Dusk”.
Of course the true star of a cooking zone is the range itself and this KitchenAid gas front-control range is a dream! A standard 30″ wide range with the look and features of a commercial model including convection and 5 burners on the cooktop. Shop appliances from Village Home Stores any day and any time online at villagehomestores.com and be sure to contact our expert team to get all of your questions answers and for our local low price guarantee!
A great range and cooktop surrounded by smart storage to be accessed right within reach of it! Pullout cabinets bookend the range and open to reveal a tray divider and spice rack. We offer many incredible specialty cabinet inserts that can be included in your kitchen or bath design from Village Home Stores. Ask your designer what your options are for both base cabinets and wall cabinets.
The best place to showcase the Skara Brae Cambria tops is the kitchen island top. The warm gray veining looks almost like rivers flowing through the piece. Cambria quartz adds drama to the look of your kitchen but no drama as far as upkeep! Engineered quartz is a wonderful surface for your counters. It is nonporous and requires no sealing to keep that quality. This surface is extremely durable and food-safe. That means you can truly get to work in your kitchen and it will clean up just like this when you are finished.
The kitchen island has some added details to it to help create a furniture look. We installed the Cambria with an Ogee Edge Profile which adds a detailed ledge all around the island top. We love how the light hits it and you can see the colors and patterns go throughout the entire slab. Each corner was also shaped to accent the wooden legs below.
To compliment the flooring woodtones, the kitchen island was installed in a Cherry “Java” stain as a contrast to the perimeter cabinetry. We included carved wooden legs at each corner and arched valances as an apron below the overhang. A wooden furniture baseboard molding completes the look. This island design offers a centrally-located work surface and a comfortable space for two to sit.
We widened doorways and also worked in other areas of this main level including the formal dining room, a front living room and this hearth room (shown below) just off of the kitchen. There we added a dry bar area to be used when entertaining guests. During the holidays do you find your own kitchen full of people? Adding a custom sideboard, dry, or wet bar to an adjacent room like this allows you to keep people out of your kitchen when you entertain.
A glass-front beverage cooler, base cabinet with drawer, wall cabinets, wine storage, and even stemware holders have all been included in this space. Like this look and want to save an idea for your own project with Village Home Stores? See more of this entire Bettendorf, Iowa kitchen and lower-level remodel project over here on our Houzz page.
Our best-selling diode LED tape lighting is the perfect enhancement for a bar area like this because you can leave these low-voltage lights on as ambient lighting all of the time. This lighting is not just for the underside of cabinetry either. We use it often inside of our glass-door cabinetry. Check out the new look the fireplace wall received in the hearth room:

This week we are sharing a feature on a custom kitchen we just completed with Aspen Homes in their Woodlands Farm House. This home in Bettendorf Iowa is so stunning it will knock the wind right out of you when you walk in the front door. It is THAT GORGEOUS! Did you know that farmhouse style doesn’t have to mean weathered woods and ship lap covering every surface? This open concept kitchen is an amazing example of a high-end and polished approach to the farmhouse style.
The kitchen is a balanced blend of custom Amish-built cabinetry in a painted “White” and White Oak stained “Sand” finish. The only bold contrast you see is in the accents like faucets, lighting, and accessories. A matte black finish on these items helps the lighting and accents to stand out and make a great statement. The overall cabinetry feels bright, light, and clean with these light finishes and floating shelves. A commercial-style 48″ wide, dual-fuel freestanding KitchenAid range is found on the main wall of the kitchen design. It includes two ovens, 6 burners, and a built-in griddle.
A pro-style range hood insert is housed above that in a custom wood hood cabinet. In a great room kitchen, scale is a very important element to consider for your overall design. In this home the tall ceilings and open spaces still feel bright and light and the size of the 48″ range and 48″ build-in refrigerator are just the right scale for the space. The cabinetry extends all the way to the ceiling and a large-scale crown molding marries the cabinetry to the ceiling. A standard-size and style crown would look out of place here. This angled, large-scale crown is perfect.
On the refrigerator wall, the same “Sand” White Oak cabinetry from the kitchen island is used to surround the built-in refrigerator. Two shelves bridge the tiled wall from the refrigerator to the entry wall. Open shelves in the kitchen and bath design industry continue to become more popular in many styles of spaces. This kitchen includes a lot of cabinet storage space so these wall shelves can be left to style any way you would like throughout the year. Imagine stacked white dishes, leaning artwork, or holiday decor!
There is a rapid-growing interest in light wood flooring and cabinetry in our industry. Would you have predicted just a few years ago that Oak would make such a comeback? Well it’s official, Oak is back in the spotlight… just not the golden Oak we saw year ago. White oak is trending and showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. We love the look of this woodgrain when paired with painted cabinets of any color. The countertop surfaces in this kitchen are an engineered quartz named “Calacatta Laza”.
The hardware in this kitchen is from our Hardware Resources line and the “Brushed Gold” handles are the “Stanton” series. A standard 3″ handle would look off-scale and shrunken in this kitchen design. Using a large-scale handle elevates the look of this entire kitchen design. The brushed gold finish is also repeated in some of the home accessories and lighting. The pendant lighting above the kitchen island makes a huge impact in the space. Three “Brynne” pendants from our Feiss line hang n a Matte Black finish with gold accents.
If you aren’t sure what size or what quantity you need for lighting above your island, please contact our expert team. We can help you select the right fixtures for your space and your budget. Shop our lighting online, anytime here on our lighting website. There you can sort by finish, style, size and more. Plus you can contact us for help on that site. Speaking of lighting, another great fixture in this home hangs next to the kitchen is a serene dining space surrounded by windows.
Here we included a Linear Gabriel 8-light fixture in the “Noir” finish from Quorum. The simple lines look right at home with the black windows in this room. The look is really timeless and on trend at the same time. Many find this upscale farmhouse look to really just be categorized a “New Traditional”. Take a look at the Great Room below and imagine that same space with just a few changes in furniture. Neutral finishes on the cabinetry and surfaces help it to be easy to envision the space jumping from farmhouse, to contemporary, coastal and everywhere in between. The ceiling fan in this room is the “Maverick” from our Monte Carlo line. It is available in many finishes including “Matte Black” (shown).
You can actually tour this home as part of the QCBR Fall Parade of Homes this week! The tour will be open from 5-7pm on Wednesday the 25th and again Saturday and Sunday 9/28-29 from 1-5pm. Grab a map and full details here. If you have a giant crush on this kitchen like we do, head over here to the full album of photos from this home on our Houzz page. There you will also find more images of the other incredible rooms in this property. We love how the powder room turned out! This furniture style vanity and marble top from Hardware Resources looks great!
In the Master Bath we repeated the White Oak “Sand” cabinetry with the same hardware and clean-lined doorstyle as the kitchen. Double sink vanity designs are still sought after for many households. Here we broke up the space by changing heights and depths of the drawer stack at the center of the design. This provides a visual interest and creates a clear separation for each user. “Octave” 3-light vanity lighting from our Savoy House line looks incredible in a “Warm Brass” finish above each sink.
We also installed some Matte Black cabinetry in some of the home’s other bathrooms and the wet bar of the lower level. Someone pour us out a pint because we want to hang out in this bar! Black “Savannah” cabinetry from our Koch Classic line is paired with Calacatta Laza Quartz counters and a 3″ thick custom wood butcherblock bar top. That same oak “Sand” stain is repeated in floating shelves on ta back bar wall. Whirlpool’s “Black Stainless Steel” finish looks perfect in this home bar and the fingerprint resistant top coat makes it ready for any party crowd!
