Bettendorf, Iowa Master Bath Remodel From Start to Finish

The Bettendorf home we featured in last week’s blog tour also received a brand new Master Suite from Village Home Stores. The entire main level of this home and portions of the lower level were remodeled from start to finish by the expert team and Project Management process from Village Home Stores. Take a look at the Master Bathroom transformation:Remodeled Master Bath in Bettendorf from Village Home Stores. Includes Koch Cabinetry and Cambria Quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

From a full-wall mirror and short vanity with molded top, to a bright painted cabinet with quartz counters. Just like the kitchen we toured in our previous post, this room has a wonderful skylight that pours in natural light during the daytime. Koch cabinetry in the Legacy door is painted White and an “Umber” Highlight has been applied. Replacing the old cultured marble vanity top is a new Cambria Quartz counter with two undermount bowls in Cambria’s “Helmsley” color.Remodeled Master Bath in Bettendorf Iowa with Cambria Quartz in Helmsley design. | VillageHomeStores.com

Helmsley is a stunning quartz design that gives the look of a natural stone with all of the benefits of quartz. Non-porous and extremely durable, quartz is a maintenance-free surface for your bathroom. A blend of dark browns and blacks mix with a neutral background. A sparkling silvery veining moves through the slabs to create a pattern normally found in a natural stone slab.  We added a lot of great storage to the new bathroom as well. Bathroom storage ideas in a Bettendorf Iowa home remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

A tall and deep cabinet on the end of the vanity run provides linen storage. Between the two vanity sinks is a wall cabinet installed atop the Cambria countertop. This wall cabinet includes a shelf storage area behind the door and two drawers. This layout is perfect for double-bowl vanity bathrooms that need as much storage space as possible. In addition to the large mirror above the vanity, there was an entire alcove of mirrors surrounding a large tub accessed by a carpeted stair in the original space.

It is such a common request these days for us to remove a large Jacuzzi tub and install a large tiled shower in its place. In this bath design, we used the tub space for the shower and a walk in closet area in the new layout. In the image below you see the framing of the shower wall niche and beyond that, the closet space where the tub used to sit.

We created a walk-around entry to this tiled shower space.  The same 12″ x 24″ tiles on the main bathroom floors are used as the shower wall tiles. The series is named “Marazzi Silk” and the color is “Elegant”. This installation pattern is called a straight lay, as the tiles lay straight on top of each row. The main bathroom floor is a brick lay pattern that staggers the location of the tiles.

Custom showers can be a wonderful solution for bath remodels because we are able to create them using any odd or unique space you may have. Ask a designer at Village Home Stores if one could work in your own space. There is a custom tiled niche built into one of the walls. In the back of that niche is an accent tile from our Jeffrey Court line named “Crushed Mood Glass” the color is “Medley Karma”. This accent tile has been installed horizontally to compliment the direction of the main wall tiles.

The shower in this featured bathroom also includes a shallow bench area to be used a footrest or for added toiletries shelving. This area is sometimes referred to as a “toe shelf”. The same series and color of tile from the wall is used but in a smaller, 2″ x 2″ size. That same smaller tile is repeated as the shower floor.

We didn’t just remodel the kitchen and bathroom in this home, we did so much more. There was another bathroom in the lower level we remodeled, as well as all new flooring throughout the home. We even took this back door storage area of separate closets and transformed it into a new full width wall of storage.

Village Home Stores isn’t just beautiful kitchens and bathrooms, we want every space and surface in your home to look great. That includes every closet and stairwell. The main stairwell in the home was transformed from a dated tea rose patterned carpet to a neutral and transitional styled space.

This home has been totally transformed for the new owners! See the full album of photos from this project here on our award-winning Houzz page. Bettendorf Iowa- Kitchen Remodeled From Start to Finish

This remodel feature takes us to a Bettendorf Iowa home that was in need of updates to better match the needs and tastes of new homeowners. The Complete Project Management Program at Village Home Stores allowed us to manage every estimate, every step, every schedule, and every detail for these clients. With a plan in place and a schedule in action we were able to remodel this home before they even moved in. Take a look at the beautiful new kitchen:Painted kitchen with accent glaze in a remodeled Bettendorf Iowa home. #kitchen #remodel from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Like many of the before stories we share here on the blog, the original kitchen was very nice. A functional design with quality products at the time it was installed many years ago. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t in need of updates. A long kitchen peninsula divided the kitchen from the dining room space and storage was limited to standard height wall cabinets:

We began by removing the existing kitchen, ceiling soffits, and ceramic tile flooring. The new design from Village Home Stores replaces the peninsula with a center kitchen island. This allows us to open up the kitchen to feel included in the open floor plan the home already had. A large skylight at the center of the kitchen is a fantastic feature and will remain a part of the new design.

The photo above shows progress after demo and plumbing and electrical rough-ins have been completed based on the new kitchen layout. A half-wall has been built for the new kitchen island. Many crews were scheduled and coordinated to remodel the kitchen, flooring, a stairway, many upstairs bedrooms, and a master bathroom (more on that in a future post). The most dramatic transformation happened in the kitchen. Take a look at this new stunning bright kitchen!Remodeled kitchen in Bettendorf from Village Home Stores. Project managed from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Beautiful new random-width light Hickory floors from our Bella Cera line in a finish named “Precis” set the stage for the new space. Cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Legacy”, Full-Overlay door has been painted in a “White” finish and an “Umber” highlight has been applied. You can see how the Umber highlight helps to accent the details of cabinetry especially the beaded back panel of the kitchen island. Beadboard back panel on kitchen island in a remodeled Bettendorf Iowa home. | VillageHomeStores.com

The skylight, bright painted cabinetry, and light hardwood floors help to give the space a warm and bright feel… but rest assured, we still added an expert lighting plan to the new kitchen. Recessed can lighting was placed throughout to illuminate the new areas of the kitchen and our bestselling Diode LED tape light was installed as undercabinet AND in-cabinet lighting. Diode LED undercabinet lighting used to light interior and underside of cabinets in a remodeled Bettendorf Iowa home. | VillageHomeStores.com

This lighting system is essential to help add ambient and task lighting (shown above in full daylight). This system is low profile, low voltage and creates the perfect wash of consistent light to any area. Electricians love the low-profile versatility of this product because you can “hide” it easily out of sight. Take a look at how easily it is tucked away behind the cabinet faceframe below: Diode LED undercabinet lighting used to light interior of cabinet in a remodeled Bettendorf Iowa home. | VillageHomeStores.com

A tall pantry cabinets fit with adjustable sliding shelves is always an enviable part of any kitchen tour. When your tall cabinet is more than 12″ deep, discuss your storage options with you designer. Slide out shelves can always make pantry access (and staying organized) easier. Tall pantry cabinet with slideout shelves in a remodeled Bettendorf Iowa home. | VillageHomeStores.com

Notice also in the image above that a baseboard molding near the floor has been wrapped around this section of cabinetry. This helps to create a built-in look to the hutch area. The baseboard also gets an added accent from the Umber highlight applied to the cabinet finish. Another tall pantry is down the wall near the refrigerator. More tall cabinet storage is just beyond the new kitchen in the laundry room (shown just through the door in the image below).

A package of KitchenAid appliances in Stainless Steel make this bright and beautiful kitchen extremely functional beginning with the incredible 5 door refrigerator model selected. This full-sided French Door model includes two soft-close refrigerated drawers and a three-tiered freezer layout. One of the drawers has 5 preset temperatures so you can select to store: meat/fish, drinks, greens/herbs, deli/cheese, or even thaw/marinate items. The other drawer includes a Produce Preserver feature ideal for getting the longest life for your fresh produce. Shop the full details of this refrigerator here on our new website or stop by the store today and see it in person.

A Sharp microwave drawer in the center kitchen island includes a tilt-out control panel and blends seamlessly with the other appliances. Microwave drawers install so well into kitchen islands and locating a microwave in a center kitchen island is a more convenient location than having them tucked into a corner or awkwardly above a cooktop. Microwave drawers give a great customized look.

Another great custom kitchen, built-in look is achieved by separating the kitchen cooktop and oven. In this design a 30″ wide 5-burner gas cooktop is installed above a 30″ wide convection wall oven.  Shown below with another great detail of changing the cabinet and countertop depth at the cooking station for added interest. Wall #oven built into base cabinet with Gas #cooktop above. Above the cooktop is a wood hood design with a concealed Broan blower insert. 390 CFMs hidden within a hood cabinet that is taller and deeper than the surrounding cabinets. Take a moment to notice the scale of the cabinet hardware on the doors and drawers. Cabinet handles and knobs can sometimes be one of the last decisions made but they are so important for a complete design. The handles selected here are an appropriate scale with the door and drawer sizes. Smaller “standard” sized handles would look out of place. The wall surfaces of the new kitchen keep the light bouncing around perfectly. Glossy, glass subway tile adds texture and style to the space. This 3″ x 6″ tile is from our Appeal series in a neutral color named “Cloud Cream”Glass subway tile in a remodeled Bettendorf Iowa home. | VillageHomeStores.com

Classic Subway Tiles can be installed in a number of patterns. We love the choice here to use a Herringbone pattern. It adds a playful look to the classic tile shape. The countertops in this kitchen are another neutral and classic choice. This “Chakra Beige” engineered quartz is one of our promotional-priced colors at the time of this feature. It blends well with painted or stained cabinets and shown here with the light Hickory floors it looks perfect. Quartz is a no-nonsense counter material for your kitchen. It is non-porous (no stains) and heat and scratch resistant! Once installed, there is no maintenance needed and the surface can be cleaned easily with soap and water or any non-abrasive cleaner.

As we hinted at earlier, there was a lot more work completed at this home than the kitchen remodel.  We will be sure to share with you some of the other highlights in another upcoming blog feature. …to a rich look of dark gray stained cherry with sparkling tile and counters! A brand new kitchen layout has been planned to now fit a long, unique island. DuraSupreme’s flat-panel “Highland” door is in a cherry wood and the rich “Peppercorn” stain allows the woodgrain to peek through. The new cabinets stretch all the way to the ceiling with a subtle crown molding. A beveled undercabinet molding completes the look beneath the wall cabinets.

A striking compliment to the Peppercorn stain on the cabinetry, is a suite of appliances in KitchenAid®’s new Black Stainless Steel finish. The first in the industry to introduce this true stainless finish. The new kitchen plan removes the original peninsula and now extends the cabinetry all the way down the wall to make space for a tall cabinet fit with a combination wall oven and microwave.

Convection features in the oven AND microwave allow this model to function as a double oven when needed. Wall ovens are fantastic for allowing you a view into the oven without bending over. When items need attention, use the SatinGlide™ Roll-Out Extension Rack for easy access. Across the kitchen is a section of tall pantry cabinets surrounding a 5- door Black Stainless Steel refrigerator.

This French Door model includes a 3-tier freezer drawer plus two refrigerated drawers. This is a full-depth model refrigerator. Read more about the differences between full/standard depth and counter depth refrigerator in this recent blog post. With the original peninsula design out, there is now room for a kitchen island. The island support post serves double-duty as a hidden storage area. Why build an empty box of panels and trim if it can be functional too?! Speaking of creative storage, this kitchen is packed with it! When you open up your Tupperware cabinet at home are you fearful of an avalanche of lids every time? Then you need this Rev-A-Shelf® insert in your life!

With the new kitchen installed came the opportunity to also put in a matching custom bench seat. A custom cushion could be made for the bench seat but this customer loves the look of the woodgrain so much they have left it uncovered. On the subject of woodgrain, note the gorgeous new flooring in this kitchen. It is actually not hardwood but instead a Luxury Vinyl Plank from our Adura line. The series is named “Ashford Walnut” and the color is “Foxwood”.

A long hinge allows for the storage access door to be opened and left open without slamming shut. Think of all of the small and unusual spaces in your own home that could be potential storage areas. Another small space that received a storage upgrade was the corner of the kitchen shown below. Added storage and a small landing space for setting down items. This angled base cabinet can be used in a number of ways in a kitchen design. Here it stands alone as a wonderful storage niche.

“Depth” of Knowledge- Counter VS. Standard Depth Refrigeration

As we work on a kitchen design with a customer, there are many questions to be answered. Questions from you about options and what comes next, plus many questions from our design team involving preference and need as we work through our process. During the design and selection stage of a project however, there will be some questions that do leave this team at a brief crossroads until a decision is made. One key detail questions you may hear early on from us is “will you be including a standard or counter-depth refrigerator in the new kitchen?”

Example of a standard depth refrigerator installed in a Quad Cities kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com
Don’t worry if this detail isn’t something that was even on your radar until just now (standard model shown above). There is no one single industry standard for refrigerator depth. The only definite factor is refrigerators are getting deeper and taller as the demand for maximum storage increases.  For decades and decades, counter-depth refrigerators were only available in extremely high-end and built-in situations. Example of a standard depth refrigerator projecting into the kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

This is no longer the case. The cleaner, more customized look of a counter-depth refrigerator makes it the most desired look for kitchen designs. This demand has made manufacturers respond with counter-depth models coming in at a variety of price points. If the phrase “counter-depth” has you seeing dollar signs, don’t worry! There may be a counter-depth model that does fit within your appliance budget! But does your design demand it?Example of a counter depth refrigerator installed in a kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

So What Are The Differences In Refrigerator Depths?

Refrigerator depth doesn’t seem like that large of a detail when you first consider it. In kitchen design every fraction of an inch needs to be considered. That is the case for cabinetry solutions as well as the appliance package included. The kitchen below showcases a standard depth refrigerator installed. Example of a standard depth refrigerator installed in a Quad Cities kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

This design above warrants no need for a counter-depth and the look is still magazine-cover worthy. Of course a counter-depth model would have looked great! Just less of the sides, or “cabinet” of the unit would show. Let’s discuss now some of those key differences between standard and counter-depth models:

  • Standard could mean the unit “sticks out” an extra 4″ or more into the kitchen. That could be noticeable in some designs and even restrict a walkway in others.
  • Cubic foot capacity will always be a main feature difference. A model that boasts the largest cubic footage of storage space will most certainly never fall into a counter-depth category.
  • Counter-depth models have limited water and ice options. Limited interior space means that some water and ice features are best suited for standard-depth models. We will discuss the topic later in this post.
  • Price used to be one of the main differences in upgrading to a counter-depth feature. Price isn’t necessarily as big of a difference as it used to be. Now many counter-depth models fit within the same price category as high-featured standard depth models.

If I Choose a Counter-Depth Model What Can I Expect?

Of course newer standard-depth models will always offer the latest and greatest in storage solutions and features. Now as more counter-depth models are introduced, many of those same features are being included in models as they are launched. This means that all of the best features and benefits are not limited only to standard-depth models. refrigerator

In fact many times innovation is pushed forward to meet the challenge of a counter-depth model.  The issue of an in-door ice unit being so large it takes up nearly 1/3 of the fresh food storage space has lead to the need to streamline the design. Now the smaller, compact units are included in standard and counter-depth models alike! Some counter-depth models may replace an in-door option with an icemaker in the lower freezer and interior water dispenser above (shown below).Example of an internal water dispenser in refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com

Side by side refrigeration is no longer the most desired layout for storage so most of the newer models launching are French door units with a bottom freezer.  While it isn’t the best storage layout for most lifestyles, side-by-side counter-depth refrigerators remain to be the lowest prices. Bottom-freezer models are constructed with a completely different design and parts. This keeps them beginning slightly higher in price from a side-by-side construction.  Village Home Stores offering cabinet depth refrigerators. | VillageHomeStores.com

Busy kitchens require maximum fresh food and freezer storage no matter what depth you choose. Our expert appliance sales team can show you all of the amazing interior features your refrigerator will have. We can help you select the perfect model for your lifestyle. If the look of your refrigeration unit is important to your design, you may want a more built-in look.

How Can I Get A “Built-In” Look?

You have many options for how you can choose to surround your refrigerator in a cabinet design. No matter the depth of your model, you need at least 1/2″ on each side and above the unit for proper ventilation. An exception to this is the category of truly “built-in” refrigeration (shown below). Built-in refrigeration options installed at counter depth. | VillageHomeStores.com

A trim kit is installed surrounding the unit for a custom fit. It is important to note that while counter-depth models offer a more built-in look, they still may show some of depth projecting from your cabinets. The only way to avoid that is to select from our built-in models. If your layout allows it, you may be able to include a recessed area on your wall for your refrigerator to set back into. This allows you the look of a counter-depth model but the choice of using any standard model. Building a niche in your wall for the depth of a standard refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com
The surrounding cabinetry can either be pulled forward to give the illusion of a built in look or ordered deeper from the factory.  These recessed spaces are a wonderful solution and when planned correctly with your design team it’s a great look! Be sure to check out our Houzz ideabook including more examples of all of these concepts.
