Learn about the differences between counter depth and standard depth refrigeration from Village Home Stores.

“Depth” of Knowledge- Counter VS. Standard Depth Refrigeration

As we work on a kitchen design with a customer, there are many questions to be answered. Questions from you about options and what comes next, plus many questions from our design team involving preference and need as we work through our process. During the design and selection stage of a project however, there will be some questions that do leave this team at a brief crossroads until a decision is made. One key detail questions you may hear early on from us is “will you be including a standard or counter-depth refrigerator in the new kitchen?”

Example of a standard depth refrigerator installed in a Quad Cities kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com
Don’t worry if this detail isn’t something that was even on your radar until just now (standard model shown above). There is no one single industry standard for refrigerator depth. The only definite factor is refrigerators are getting deeper and taller as the demand for maximum storage increases.  For decades and decades, counter-depth refrigerators were only available in extremely high-end and built-in situations. Example of a standard depth refrigerator projecting into the kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

This is no longer the case. The cleaner, more customized look of a counter-depth refrigerator makes it the most desired look for kitchen designs. This demand has made manufacturers respond with counter-depth models coming in at a variety of price points. If the phrase “counter-depth” has you seeing dollar signs, don’t worry! There may be a counter-depth model that does fit within your appliance budget! But does your design demand it?Example of a counter depth refrigerator installed in a kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

So What Are The Differences In Refrigerator Depths?

Refrigerator depth doesn’t seem like that large of a detail when you first consider it. In kitchen design every fraction of an inch needs to be considered. That is the case for cabinetry solutions as well as the appliance package included. The kitchen below showcases a standard depth refrigerator installed. Example of a standard depth refrigerator installed in a Quad Cities kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

This design above warrants no need for a counter-depth and the look is still magazine-cover worthy. Of course a counter-depth model would have looked great! Just less of the sides, or “cabinet” of the unit would show. Let’s discuss now some of those key differences between standard and counter-depth models:

  • Standard could mean the unit “sticks out” an extra 4″ or more into the kitchen. That could be noticeable in some designs and even restrict a walkway in others.
  • Cubic foot capacity will always be a main feature difference. A model that boasts the largest cubic footage of storage space will most certainly never fall into a counter-depth category.
  • Counter-depth models have limited water and ice options. Limited interior space means that some water and ice features are best suited for standard-depth models. We will discuss the topic later in this post.
  • Price used to be one of the main differences in upgrading to a counter-depth feature. Price isn’t necessarily as big of a difference as it used to be. Now many counter-depth models fit within the same price category as high-featured standard depth models.

If I Choose a Counter-Depth Model What Can I Expect?

Of course newer standard-depth models will always offer the latest and greatest in storage solutions and features. Now as more counter-depth models are introduced, many of those same features are being included in models as they are launched. This means that all of the best features and benefits are not limited only to standard-depth models. refrigerator

In fact many times innovation is pushed forward to meet the challenge of a counter-depth model.  The issue of an in-door ice unit being so large it takes up nearly 1/3 of the fresh food storage space has lead to the need to streamline the design. Now the smaller, compact units are included in standard and counter-depth models alike! Some counter-depth models may replace an in-door option with an icemaker in the lower freezer and interior water dispenser above (shown below).Example of an internal water dispenser in refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com

Side by side refrigeration is no longer the most desired layout for storage so most of the newer models launching are French door units with a bottom freezer.  While it isn’t the best storage layout for most lifestyles, side-by-side counter-depth refrigerators remain to be the lowest prices. Bottom-freezer models are constructed with a completely different design and parts. This keeps them beginning slightly higher in price from a side-by-side construction.  Village Home Stores offering cabinet depth refrigerators. | VillageHomeStores.com

Busy kitchens require maximum fresh food and freezer storage no matter what depth you choose. Our expert appliance sales team can show you all of the amazing interior features your refrigerator will have. We can help you select the perfect model for your lifestyle. If the look of your refrigeration unit is important to your design, you may want a more built-in look.

How Can I Get A “Built-In” Look?

You have many options for how you can choose to surround your refrigerator in a cabinet design. No matter the depth of your model, you need at least 1/2″ on each side and above the unit for proper ventilation. An exception to this is the category of truly “built-in” refrigeration (shown below). Built-in refrigeration options installed at counter depth. | VillageHomeStores.com

A trim kit is installed surrounding the unit for a custom fit. It is important to note that while counter-depth models offer a more built-in look, they still may show some of depth projecting from your cabinets. The only way to avoid that is to select from our built-in models. If your layout allows it, you may be able to include a recessed area on your wall for your refrigerator to set back into. This allows you the look of a counter-depth model but the choice of using any standard model. Building a niche in your wall for the depth of a standard refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com
The surrounding cabinetry can either be pulled forward to give the illusion of a built in look or ordered deeper from the factory.  These recessed spaces are a wonderful solution and when planned correctly with your design team it’s a great look! Be sure to check out our Houzz ideabook including more examples of all of these concepts. Many of the questions we may ask you in our first few meetings have already been decided during your own research and inspiration process. In this case, we are just collecting information from you and getting everyone on the same page that will be involved on your project. It is our job to keep all of these details in order as we work through our process for your project at Village Home Stores. Discussing options and working through to find the best solution for your project and budget is a very key part of the big picture. This is the case with just a single new appliance purchase, or an entire remodel or new home build. Let our experts help. Road Trip! Our 2017 Visit to The Whirlpool® Plant in Amana, IA

Village Home Stores works hard to curate a list of as many quality, American-made products as possible for our customers. By offering the Whirlpool® family of products, we are able to cover all of the Appliance needs of our customers to fit a variety of budgets and lifestyles. Combining this family of products from Amana, Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid brands we are providing our customers access to a Local Low Price Guarantee on products from #1 selling major Appliance Manufacturer in the world. American pride is important to the Whirlpool family of products and that is why they have invested in American manufacturing whenever possible. There are now 9 U.S. manufacturing plants as of 2017 and we are so lucky to be located near one of those manufacturing facilities. Because of this, we get the chance to visit a plant about once a year. The Whirlpool® plant located in Amana, Iowa manufactures all bottom-mount refrigerators and built-in refrigeration for all brands and it is an impressive place!Whirlpool amana

They are running 5 lines of production 24 hours a day, five days a week (plus currently every other weekend to keep up with demand). To put it in perspective, they are making a refrigerator every 18 seconds! We were able to tour the plant to see the smiling faces making the products we sell. Then we were given intense product training on some of the new models and features being launches by all brands. We were shown brand new items like the closet-depth compact washer and dryer shown below:compact-laundry

These compact units were impressive for their size. The other new models and features launching in Maytag® and Whirlpool® laundry are more geared to our Village Home Stores customers. Still not convinced your washer has enough water? Now you can add as much as you are comfortable with with the new built-in faucet feature on select models.

Pre-wash stains right away as you find them. Fill the tub to soak tough stains ahead of a cycle. Just a press of the button gives you running water. Smart technology was also a big topic of conversation during our training. Does your household talk to Alexa, a Google device, or Siri? Then Whirlpool can help simplify many tasks with select Wifi enabled models and the Whirlpool app. Click below to watch (and hear) how voice-activated features are the latest and greatest.

Of course these models are jam-packed with amazing features outside of the Wifi capabilities. You can use them just as you would any other range or laundry pair. But for those households making adjustments and smart home investments, features like scan-to-cook might be right up your alley:

We also saw some great new finishes we can begin to offer for your home appliances! With the success of ® Black Stainless Steel finish, Whirlpool® has launched their own line of models in a Black Stainless Steel. This finish is beautiful and STAYS beautiful! Not only is it a stylish look, its completely fingerprint resistant as well! Wipes clean with just a wet microfiber cloth.

Village Home Stores already has models on display in our showroom in this new finish option. The new finish and handle design have been receiving a very warm welcome from customers and our designers! Come in and test out the fingerprint resist in person! We are certainly going to be throwing a party once the other newest finish is launched and on our floor! Introducing the warm, new, on-trend Sunset Bronze finish available soon on some select Whirlpool® models! sunset-bronze-whirlpoolImagine if you can… a room full of Appliance sales and service people from all over the Midwest Region getting unbelievably excited about a dishwasher door leaning against a wall. Yeah, we know…. sounds pretty nerdy but you would have thought the Whirlpool team had just introduced Lady Gaga as a special training guest. We all admittedly went nuts for this new finish once seeing it in person. Here it is installed in a completed kitchen:

The best way to describe it is a “warmer, softer Stainless” look. It takes the coldness and commercial feel of Stainless and softens it to a warmer look. This finish is exactly on-trend for what we have already began seeing in other kitchen design finishes throughout the industry. Lighting, hardware, accessories, flooring and tile, all are going the way of a warmer gray and golden accents. We are always excited to hear about the latest and greatest available for our customers. It is also always very reassuring to tour the factory and see that the quality, legacy, and innovation that we have seen from this family of product is still going stronger than ever. Product Profile: Our Trip To Visit Cambria Quartz

At Village Home Stores we are proud to seek out and offer as many American-made products as possible to our customers. A perk of making this decision comes with the access to visit these brands and see who is behind the name. Over the past year, our design staff has been invited a handful of times to visit Cambria® Quartz. Last week we documented our trip to visit Cambria® so you can see for yourself why we are excited about offering this brand to you.Read about our trip to Minnesota to visit the Cambria gallery on 7th at the Village Home Stores blog. | VillageHomeStores.comIf you have been considering your countertop options you certainly know by now that there are countless brands of quartz options available for your home. One of the things we have learned in the Kitchen and Bath industry since we opened our doors in 1984 is that people buy from people. Our customers choose us not because of what we carry, but the service they have come to expect from our store. So in that same spirit, allow us to share with you why we are proud to offer Cambria® to our customers.cambria-gallery

The staff is enthusiastic and passionate at every level:

We witnessed this from the gallery to the office and all the way through the fabrication process. Everyone involved in the product truly believes it is the best available. We were allowed to toured the factory and watch the manufacturing of the slabs. Not only were the facilities impeccable clean, the employees were genuinely happy. At one point we were up above the running line and we could look down at the process but also across the room to a training room. Staff (who were not aware we could see them) were engaged in the training, laughing and seemed to be enjoying whatever it was they were learning about.  Everyone at work  we met greeted us with a smile.Read about our trip to Minnesota to visit the Cambria Quartz facilities on the Village Home Stores blog. | VillageHomeStores.com

Cambria® Quartz truly are thought leaders in this industry:

A portion of the manufacturing process was not a part of our factory tour. This is completely understandable as Cambria® has always been on the very pulse of what is new and exciting the their industry. From on-trend colors and finishes (yay! matte finish), to pattern applications that could fool even mother nature herself. We always look forward to seeing what new launches they have available once they are ready.Cambria Quartz Crystal | VillageHomeStores.com

A hands-on approach means a Limited Lifetime Guarantee for our customers:

Product is tested and inspected the entire process. This begins even when materials arrive. While we walked through one of the labs a delivery truck of quartz had arrived and quartz crystals and dust were being prepared for a rigorous amount of tests. These tests are completed before product was even accepted and the driver could leave. The entire innovative process from the craftsmen and women at Cambria® allows them to proudly offer a Lifetime Limited Warranty to our customers. Touring the manufacturing and fabrication facilities were truly a highlight of our trip. We also visited the Cambria® Gallery on 7th in downtown Minneapolis, MN. Cambria gallery on 7th Minneapolis, MN | VillageHomeStores.com
The gallery includes a large showroom space featuring full slabs of the current Cambria® designs as well as installed product displays. It was a dream to walk the aisles of full-scale designs and see some of the newest options available in person.

A stage at the center of the gallery is used for trade events as well as concerts aired locally to the community. We recognized a lot of names on the walls of musicians who have paid a visit including Aledo-native Margo Price!

Of course Cambria® was so kind to us throughout our trip showing us the very best Minneapolis has to offer in food and activities. Because…. well, SUMMER, we wrapped up our trip with a networking event at a  Minnesota Twins game at Target Field. The Cambria® Design Center at Target Field was the perfect setting to chat with all of the other visiting Kitchen and Bath designers, fabricators, and installers also in town to visit with us. Did you just have had an “a-ha moment” when we mentioned baseball and Cambria® together? You may have noticed over the past few years ads for Cambria® Quartz behind home plate during many MLB games. twins-game

An American-made product + the “great American pastime” = a home run indeed! Of course because Cambria® is durable, maintenance free, and 100% nonporous it has many commercial applications as well. The same color quartz you may select for your bathroom vanity may be installed in a Harley showroom, a dental office, or perhaps the clubhouse of a sporting team facility.twins-v-tigers

Unfortunately the Twins lost to the Tigers 3 – 6 but we still had such a great time. On a positive note, we were able to stay after the game and watch fireworks! A pretty fantastic Friday evening if you ask us! Cambria® is everywhere. Of course the Design Center at Target Field was no exception. Read about our trip to Minnesota to visit the Cambria Quartz facilities and Design Center at Target Field. | VillageHomeStores.com

So why in the world did we also tour a dairy farm?!

Believe it or not, Cambria® began there! In 1936 Stan Davis began an apprenticeship at a butter creamery. By 1943 Stan purchased a creamery and until the year 2000 the Davis family was focused solely on the Dairy business. In 2000 family entered the quartz business after being presented with the opportunity to buy quartz processing equipment. With the success an innovation they put into their dairies, Cambria® Quartz has now evolved into becoming the brand we know and love today. new-sweden-dairy

Touring the Dairy farm and seeing the entire cycle of the process really reflected some of the parts we saw when touring the quartz facilities. Happy and enthusiastic employees and  an innovative process. Read more about this journey from this dairy farm to where Cambria® is now here on their website. Cambria® is passionate about getting involved in the community and in addition to their own Camp Cambria program and Team Cambria youth sports teams, they are also involved in the Veterans Fund and Big Brothers Big Sisters to name a few others. camp-cambria

Learn more about these programs here on their website. Cambria® is also passionate about acquiring materials in a sustainable way and putting sustainable processes in place during manufacturing and fabrication. For example, 100% of the water used in manufacturing is recycled back into the process. They also provide wonderful tools to our designers AND customers. allstar

Product Profile: An All Star Lineup!

In honor of the MLB All-Star Game this week, we thought we would share our own All-Star Accessories lineup! We are aware that investing in brand new cabinetry as a part of your project can be overwhelming and come with many style and construction decisions to be made. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to make the most of the storage that these cabinets can offer. After all… isn’t that the whole reason they have been called up to bat? So why upgrade to specialty cabinets? Using your space effectively is our goal. Helping you invest in smart storage solutions right away is a part of our responsibility as kitchen experts.  Get it right the first time, not after trying over and over to retro-fit a “universal” item into your expertly designed space. Let’s begin with our “Ace” All-Star: shelving.

Slide-Out Shelves: shelf-pullout2

Consider what your storage solutions may be once you begin to “move into” your new kitchen without slide-out shelves? There is no better way to use the entire interior space better than with slide-outs. Each cabinet line varies, but typically a standard base cabinets comes with just a single, half-depth flat shelf. Shopping for ways to find inserts, bins and shelves to organize your items can end up costing you added money and a lot of time. Instead, have your designer from Village Home Stores deliver your new cabinets with adjustable slide-out shelves (or even deep slide-out bins). Al moved in and still see space that could be used? No problem! We can even short-order added shelves that will easily fit on the existing brackets if you find you could use more of them.

Corner Cabinets:Base lazy susan cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.com

Corner cabinets are such unusually-shaped items that it is always assumed some sort of insert should be included. “Lazy Susan” cabinets can be in the bases and wall cabinets of your design. We offer many different versions of Lazy Susan constructions and shapes. Typically a base Lazy Susan cabinet is an L-shaped unit that measures 36″ from each corner. There are also smaller 33″ models available or even asymmetrical corner cabinets (i.e. 33″ on one end, and 36″ on the other). What if you don’t have the minimum 33″ in a corner? A Blind Corner Cabinet may be the best solution for you. Did you know there are special inserts to help you access even that awkward space?
blind-corner

The Blind Corner Cabinet above has been fit with two crescent-moon shaped shelves that swivel out, then even pull forward for a way to reach the very back corner of this “blind” space. This cabinet can be perfect for remodel designs that may be trying to add a dishwasher into the new design or add a larger sinkbase cabinet. No matter what space you end up with in your corner, we can make the most of it.  Sometimes the tiniest things start to collect and take over a cabinet space. Spices and cooking oils are definitely guilty of that!

Spice Storage:
spicerack

Including an area for storing spices and cooking oils may seem like a luxury wish-list item… but think of how much space these small containers can take up if you DON’T plan ahead. By designating just a narrow pull-out cabinet in your bases or walls, you can free up a lot of space elsewhere for other items. Spice storage can be added in a pullout, a drawer or a shelf attached to a wall cabinet interior.spicedrawer

If a pull-out spice rack isn’t something you can work into your cabinet design, do you have an extra drawer? We love this tiered spice rack option that can be added to a drawer. You can see all of the labels clearly without removing or bending down to read them. It is alwasy best to keep spice storage near the cooking zone of a kitchen design if you are able to. That way you have access to what you need while cooking without stepping away from the activity.

Knife Blocks:
knifeblock2

Think of all of the items you end up having on your countertop that could possibly find a home in your cabinet design? A designated knife storage area can help de-clutter your counters and keep from messing up utensil drawers. Clearly this base-cabinet access to your sharp knives doesn’t fit every lifestyle (we never recommend it for families with young children), but for some kitchens it is perfect! Many times kitchens include a knife block and still require a second drawer for all of the “other” knives. Why not just designate one zone for all of them?
knifeblock

This pull-out knifeblock from DuraSupreme is a brilliant use of just a 3″ wide space. It even includes a slot for your knife sharpener and a shallow shelf above to lay any smaller knives flat. The list of pull-out storage solutions goes on and on. Your Designer at Village Home Stores will work closely with you to help decide if there is one available that may work great for your own lifestyle. What about cleaning supplies?

Clean Up Zone:
pantry

Batting “clean up”…. well that’s YOU every day! Keeping cleaning supplies handy can help keep your kitchen looking amazing. If the basics are all within reach, you are more likely to use them. It alwasy seems odd to store some of these cleaning agents and items near your food. Separating them is always recommended. Inserts underneath the kitchen sink can be added, or even better a tall utility cabinet can house supplies and tools like brooms and mops. Designating a zone for clean-up supplies is an All-Star move and access to the garbage is a part of that!

Pull-Out Waste Baskets:
waste-basket-cabinet

Speaking of cleaning up, the wastebasket is always a busy place in a busy kitchen. Pull-out waste baskets have become so common because they check all of the right boxes when redesigning your kitchen: You can include the wastebeasket right in the busy areas of the kitchen instead of hidden in a corner by the door and even add a second bin for recycling. Or take it one step further and add another pull-out for pet food. We can even get a sealed container option for this. dog_food_storage

Apologies in advance but we have one more baseball pun to make. There is no other way to describe this last item on our list other than the “MVP”.

LED Undercabinet Lighting:
undercabinet-lighting

We know, we know, technically this can’t count because it isn’t a cabinet item but can we please let it be the mascot? We have to at least give it a proper mention because this Diode LED lighting system is sincerely the best addition to any kitchen design. There is no better way to show off your space while giving yourself a low-voltage task lighting system to use the new space. Sometimes seeing these cabinets in use is the best way to visualize them in your own design. If you are interested in looking at specialty cabinets to include in your new kitchen from Village Home Stores be sure to check out some of our cabinet animations we have captured over the years. Showroom Updates 2017: New Flooring Showroom

Just a few short years ago we expanded our showroom to accommodate the return of a floor covering department to Village Home Stores. We now have a much larger space to accommodate all of the samples and product displays needed. Many of our customers are still learning that we offer a full floorcovering and tile department. Product Profile- Self-Stick Wallplanks

We are thrilled to introduce this new product to our customers! While we have built the reputation for being your main source for complete remodels, we also provide quality products and expert design to empower our customers to do the work themselves. At Village Home Stores we value a customer who wants to invest their own time into a project that they will enjoy for years to come. It is not breaking news that shiplap, barnwood, and reclaimed woods of all styles and finishes have become very popular in kitchen and bath design. That is why we are very excited to launch this new self-stick wall plank product that is easy to install for an incredible impact! It truly is a DIY project that is NOT intimidating to take on.

wallplank-DIY

What do we mean by a DIY project that is not intimidating to take on? The day our new display arrived for the showroom our owner Jim decided to just install it right away in between appointments. He had it finished well before lunch! Take a look at this video of some of that installation (we admit that did speed it up just a bit for your own sake).

This product is meant to be installed by the homeowner. So much so that you can install it using just a measuring tape, pencil, and utility knife. Much like many of our other products at Village Home Stores, these wall planks are made in the U.S.A. The 1/4″ thick panels are sustainably sourced and processed with real North American hardwood. keypoints

The boards are stained using a patent pending process of infusing stain pigments into the veneering process. The result is the illusion of exotic hardwoods and rustic and reclaimed characteristics on a smooth, easy to clean surface.  A UV cured low-gloss finish is applied on the top of the planks and is wiped clean with water and a damp cloth. Let us walk you through the process step by step:

Plan & Measure Space:

Before installing it is recommended that you allow the wood planks to acclimate to the climate on the interior of your home. This helps to prevent any gapping or cracking in the planks if the humidity changes once installed. Carefully plan your space before you make your first cut. When this product says “industrial-strength adhesive” that translates to “once I’m stuck on the wall I won’t come off without a fight” adhesive.

measure-and-plan

Measure & Mark Your Cut Lines:

Be sure to measure your planks and mark on both sides of the material before scoring. Double check your wall dimension and your marked material one last time before scoring the plank.
Wallplank installation- Measure your cut line on both side of plank. | VillageHomeStores.com

Score the Planks:

Using a straight edge firmly placed along the marked lines, score the planks with a utility knife. You will want to do this on both side of the plank to achieve the cleanest break in the product.
Wallplank installation- Using straightedge score your cut line on both side of plank. | VillageHomeStores.com

Oh Snap!

Once both sides have been scored successfully, snap at the line firmly securing each side of the plank. Keep your hands close to the line to get the cleanest break.snap

Clean Up Edges:

Using your knife or a sanding block, clean up the splintered edges from your snapped planks.Wallplank installation- clean up the edges of your cut boards to remove any splintering. Use sanding block if needed. | VillageHomeStores.com

RECOMMENDED CUT METHOD:

It only took a few rows of the utility knife method for Jim to switch to using a saw for the rest of the cuts. This made for quicker and cleaner cuts of the material. If you have access to a saw for use you will be thankful for this option. For areas like outlets and airvents, you can make these cuts using a drill first as a starter hole. Then use a jigsaw or scroll saw to complete the cuts. Always use eye protection when cutting materials with a saw.
saw

Peel, Place, THEN Stick:

Remove the adhesive tape backing from the plank and place your first plank. Using your marked guidelines on the wall place your first plank. As your move along with the installation you will want to but the seams of materials together at a slight angle first before allowing adhesive to touch the surface. Wallplank installation- slide ridged edge into seam area before allowing adhesive touch wall surface. | VillageHomeStores.com

Press Firmly:

Once in place, press firmly to allow the adhesive to make as much contact with the surface as possible.  If you have one, A “J-Roller” helps with this task. Trim pieces are available if the look of the cut edges isn’t desired. Ask a salesperson about these trim options. Wallplank installation- Press adhesive into place firmly. - | VillageHomeStores.com

For Ceiling Application:

Yes you can absolutely use this wall plank system on your ceiling! It is recommended that once installed, you add small 18 gauge finish nails to help secure to the ceiling and take some strain off the adhesive being pulled by gravity.

Where can you use these wall planks? They can be installed on any structurally sound, clean, dry, and flat surface. Accent walls, decorative headboards, adding style to the back of an open shelf, the possibilities are endless and we can;t wait to see where our customers use it! It should be noted that this product is NOT recommended to install planks in any high moisture areas such as bathrooms or steam rooms. Road Trip! Our 2016 Visit to Whirlpool in Amana, IA

Village Home Stores is proud to offer Whirlpool appliances to the Quad Cities region. We are able to say with great confidence that we carry products that are backed by U.S. manufacturing and jobs. Did you know that:

Whirlpool Corp. is the only full line appliance manufacturer based in the United States. They operate 9 US manufacturing plants in 5 different states.

Our staff  is so lucky to be located just a short drive away from one of those plants in Amana, Iowa. We have been able to participate in a product training and plant tour now for the past few years. Please excuse our attire for the factory tour, this is not a fashion blog folks.
tour1

The plant we visited last week is home to all of the bottom-mount refrigeration operations as well as built-in refrigeration. This 2.1 Million square foot facility is huge! We clocked 1 3/4 miles on our factory tour alone. The water treatment facility for the plant also supplies the entire Amana Colonies with water. Whirlpool provides back-up power when needed for the region as well. This Amana, IA plant produces roughly 6,400 refrigerators a day! Pardon our pun but that’s pretty cool!
tour2

First of all, say hello to Seth (shown above on left). He is our newest member of the Appliances staff and was able to join us this year for this Whirlpool training and tour event. In addition to our tour, we received product training on many new models and features being introduced in laundry and kitchen appliances. Shown below is one of those new features called an “under-shelf prep zone” which utilizes an un-used space for for marinating or other storage needs in this new refrigerator model. This same new refrigerator model includes TWO ice makers, each with the ability to produce 4.6 lb.s of ice. Just get a text that you are entertaining guests after the work day? No problem! You can program to have plenty of ice by the time you get home right from your mobile phone. We saw so many amazing new products! Many of these models are already at our store or on their way. shelf

View this current US Manufacturing Map from Whirlpool showing the locations and products represented in the 9 manufacturing plants in the US. Whirlpool Corporation currently employs 22,000 manufacturing workers. Whirlpool truly believes that “there is no right way to do a wrong thing” and has committed to this opportunity to stay in the US. For example, instead of moving freezer manufacturing to Mexico or China, Whirlpool has recently purchased an vacant factory in Ottawa, Ohio keeping thousands of jobs in Ohio and allowing another category of product manufacturing  to remain in the US.interior

10000cupcakesNo complaints that we were greeted the morning of training with cupcakes alongside our breakfast (see our Instagram post on the right when we caught Rob with a cupcake at 8am). We were thrilled to hear that KitchenAid is hosting their #10000cupcakes campaign again this year to benefit Susan G. Komen. You can help make a difference for this cause! Share a photo or video with @KitchenAidUSA on Instagram or Twitter and include #10000cupcakes and #donate. For every original photo or video posted KitchenAid will donate $1 to support the fight against breast cancer, up to $10,000. Join us in store Thursday October 27th from 4:30-7pm as part of our annual “Witches Night Out” celebration and decorate your own cupcake to snap a photo of. Cordova, IL- Rustic Transitional Kitchen Remodel

This Cordova, IL kitchen is a sophisticated approach to the Rustic Transitional style. Rustic Beech cabinetry from our Koch line includes knots and other rustic features and a rich “Chestnut” stain dresses up the space. Solid gray quartz countertops and Stainless Steel appliances complete the look…. and that look is breathtakingly gorgeous! hidden_drawer_cabinet (1)

The “Vicksburg” doorstyle selected is a full-overlay style. This means that the doors and drawer fronts span as far across the cabinet face frames as possible leaving little gap between each cabinet. A great example of this seamless full-overlay style is the pantry area that surrounds the new double drawer refrigerator.

Staggered heights and depths were used to add interest to the large L-shaped layout of wall cabinetry. There are many excellent cabinet storage solutions in this kitchen design. The image below showcases the “X” shaped wine cubbies included. Wine storage and display in the perfect location at the end of the kitchen. The cubbies cap off the wall cabinetry and when entertaining, this leg of the design is perfect to set up as the beverage center.

Many of the specialty storage cabinets are hidden from first glance. You don’t need a pull-out cabinet or borrow space in your pantry cabinet for spices, spice racks can be added to your wall cabinetry. Click the thumbnail below to watch this wall cabinet open up to reveal spice racks installed on the interior of each door.

Of course the best way to optimized the corner of your kitchen is to include a lazy susan cabinet. This kitchen has an all wood susan cabinet in an angled front layout. Replacing the L-shaped susan cabinet with space for a full radius of shelf to turn within.  This is an alternative to the traditional susan shelves that form a “Pac Man” shaped shelf. The same angled front door is repeated in the wall cabinetry above.

You also gain added counter space in the corner when using the angled front style of corner cabinet. Ans speaking of counter space, there is plenty with the new dual-height island design. The built-in cooking center is on the interior side facing the kitchen sink. Tall cabinets form the bar-height side of the island. A overhang on the tops stretches in toward the great room and provide seating for 4 guests.

Instead of simply adding a panel that looks like finished cabinet doors, why not make them real doors? At 12″ deep, these full-height door cabinets give a polished look to the back of the island plus add a lot of storage. Extra dishes, bulk items, small appliances, even board games and remotes can all be stored here out of sight but right within reach.

Storage is great but many will also appreciate the construction of these Koch Cabinets. This Cordova, IL kitchen has been ordered from Koch’s Imperial Series of construction. This plywood construction series includes upgraded materials as well as upgraded assembly processes that add to the integrity and longevity of your investment. Koch Imperial Series Cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.comAll of these upgrades plus option to upgrade your drawer box construction and guides as well as your door hinges to a soft-close option. The 1/2″ plywood sides may also be ordered with applied 1/4″ veneered skins for finished ends. Talk with your designer at Village Home Stores about the cabinet construction upgrades that are available for you and your project. This customer upgraded to full-extension, soft-close drawer guides and soft-close hinges on the doors. A clean built-in look was achieved in the island by including a wall oven with cooktop installed above in place of a slide-in or freestanding unit. This can be done with a gas, electric or induction cooktop. The appliance package selected for this remodel is from the Whirlpool line available at Village Home Stores.

Surrounding the built-in oven are two tray divider cabinets. To the left of the new oven and tray divider cabinets is a large stack of drawers. This unit looks like a two drawer cabinet but behind the top drawer is a hidden third drawer perfect for utensils, lids, or potholders. Click the thumbnail below to see this hidden third drawer cabinet.

houzz_album

We have a full album of photos from this project uploaded to our Houzz.com portfolio. See these images and save some to your own ideabooks by clicking here. Houzz is a fantastic way to organize your project inspiration and even communicate with your designer at Village Home Stores. If you are building or remodeling anytime soon you will want to download this app to your tablet and phone. The adjacent front sitting room area of the home was also given a whole new look. Two sections of wall surrounding the fireplace now have built-in cabinetry that matches the style and finish of the kitchen. Wood countertops in the same “Chestnut” stain help give the units a custom look but set them apart from the kitchen while keeping everything coordinated.  Another detail is the addition of textured water glass inserts inside of the cabinet doors. The freedom to display items within without the exposed shelves to gather dust.

This home has been updated and is almost unrecognizable from where it began. Step in from the front door and the new open kitchen and living spaces looks like a brand new home worthy of a magazine cover feature! Our thanks to this Cordova, IL family for their business and our hats off to the homeowner who completed his own installation of the kitchen design. Partial Remodel- How To “Pull Off” Mixing Metals

Three wood finishes, two granite colors, AND four metal finishes? Yes that is correct! Take a look at how amazing everything looks together! Proof that with the right guidance and vision, you can pull off mixing materials like this. The perimeter oak cabinetry is actually original to the kitchen. A peninsula was removed and now a large painted island sits in the center of the kitchen.
A blend of finishes in a Prophetstown, IL kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A brand new appliance package was purchased from Village Home Stores including A counter-depth refrigerator and dishwasher in KitchenAid’s first-in-the-industry Black Stainless Steel. This uniquely tinted Stainless Steel is sophisticated, stylish, and striking in person. The true Stainless Steel finish wipes clean in seconds and the tinted color even helps reduce the appearance of fingerprints on the panels.

The new kitchen island top is a granite named “Desert Dream” and on perimeter of the kitchen “Astoria” granite has been installed. Both of these natural stones are in a “brushed” finish. Instead of the expected high-polished look granite normally has, the brushed finish gives a unique and warm texture while enhancing the look and feel of the stone. Two stones and two appliance finishes. The refrigerator and range wall is the best example of showcasing the two finishes side-by-side that work perfectly together in the finished look.

A Stainless Steel 30″ wide, front-control slide-in electric range is just inches from the Black Stainless refrigerator. The new distressed painted wood hood above the range and accent tile ties everything together, the look is perfect. A Stainless Steel microwave drawer in the new kitchen island is right across from a Black Stainless dishwasher. That is not all for metal finishes in the new space. Oil-Rubbed Bronze faucets have been paired with Hammered Copper undermount sinks.

The Hammered Copper is not only a great color to add to the mix, the texture is incredible. With views of the countryside out every window, this Hammered Copper adds a rustic touch to the space while the shape and setting keep it formal. The use of a deep farmhouse apron-front model sink is the right choice for this Rustic Traditional look and offers even more of that Hammered surface to show.

An updated look to an existing Oak kitchen. The finishes aren’t the only upgrades included. The appliances selected for this project represent some of the best features available in appliances today. The slide-in range includes convection and steam features in the oven and 5 elements including a warming zone. An internal water dispenser, versatile shelving, plus a three-tiered freezer drawer make this one of the most spacious counter-depth refrigerators you will ever use. This 24″ wide microwave drawer by Sharp has been redesigned to pair more seamlessly with all of our brands. With a tilt-out control panel, there are no handles to match up. Perfect for including in islands or even built-in to a custom bar area, this microwave is one of our top-selling models for both remodels and new homes. View our full catalog of appliances here on the website and contact anyone from our expert appliance sales team with any questions you have on these products.

Oak crown molding and refrigerator panels were ordered to adapt the existing kitchen to the new design. The new black-painted cabinetry is from our DuraSupreme line and showcases their Heritage paint series. A wood hood above the new range and a large kitchen island are each finished in the “B” color from this series. An “X” back panel design is paired with a beadboard end panel treatment. There is now space for four barstools plus plenty of space for a large dining table area right next to the island.

DuraSupreme’s Heritage paint finishes come in a wide range of color options. From a bright antique white to this black painted look there are so many possibilities. Heritage painted finishes all include distressed features like chipped corners, worn edges, and even “bird-pecking” which are perfect old-world characteristics for the furniture-look island and wood hood installed.

This new kitchen sits on the perfect platform to showcase the complete look. Beautiful new Hickory hardwood floors have been installed throughout the entire great room all the way to the front entrance of the home. This warm Hickory “Tackroom” finished hardwood is from the Chaparal Collection. “Annie” (see below) just loves laying in the sunlight on her new Hallmark floors.
Hallmark hickory hardwood flooring. | VillageHomeStores.com

Annie is now pretty much internet-famous thanks to this feature Hallmark Flooring wrote up on her (new floors). All of these finishes together in one space and does it work? ABSOLUTELY! Having a designer on hand to help you select and place your selections keeps your project vision on track and well executed. Your designer at Village Home Stores will have a firm grasp on the overall vision for the finished look and that is a valuable asset.

A new tile backsplash ties all of these selections together perfectly. Matte finish subway tile in a color called “Elemental Tan” plus a Glazzio accent tile from their “Corrugated Scapes” series in the “Ginger Clove” color. A bold band of accent tile spans the entire L-shape and a square field installed above the range completes the look.

This partial kitchen remodel was not all we completed at this home. New flooring was installed in many rooms and two bathrooms were completely made over. See the full album of over 70 photos from these projects here on our houzz page. We also are happy to announce that this kitchen and both bathrooms has been included in an episode of the Village Home Show. You can watch it entirely by pressing play in the video below:
