Keri and Natasha just got back from attending the Lightovation 2020 event at the Dallas Market Center and we are so thrilled to share what they saw! If you have ever worked with either of these two designers you know they are absolutely obsessed with lighting and their industry so this “work trip” was pretty fun for them.
Attending market events like this really keeps our lighting team ahead of the game. We can be more efficient and helpful for our customers having seen these fixtures in person vs. as just a page in a catalog.-Keri Swanberg of the Village Lighting Team
Our team met with many of our current vendors one on one and took time to walk through and see as much product as possible. So many exciting new fixtures were introduced at Lightovation and our team members were among some of the first designers to see them in person. Here are some of the trends that they spotted while browsing our vendor booths at market:
We’ve got the blues big time and we are not sad at all about it! Shades of blue were spotted everywhere. For those who follow our Village blog this is no news to the Cabinet industry. Our painted Charcoal Blue finish remains as one of our most requested accent cabinet color. With the announcement of Pantone’s color of the year to be a shade of blue, we were expecting to see some response to that… but WOW! Blue was everywhere and in every category of lighting.
Not just shades of blue, but a variety of sheen to those blues. Most were showcased in a matte finish texture. Imagine how great the dome pendants shown above would look above a kitchen island! We loved seeing some blue lighting options in a high-gloss lacquered look as well. Check out these glossy outdoor sconces from the Kichler Lighting booth:
Of course nothing is as classic as a white finish… but on light fixtures? You bet! We spotted bright whites everywhere we went at market. Some of our favorite fixtures were a combination of those whites with a metal finish. This new Minka Lavery series combines white and a gold finishes:
Have you ever walked into a space and fell in love with it from a distance… only to enter in and start noticing even more reasons you love it? Usually that is the case. Great design happens in the details. We had this experience a few times last week when the interior of a light fixture surprised us! This peek-a-boo effect is most commonly executed with a gold finished interior showcased below in this collection from our Quorum line.
And how about a fixture that combines multiple trends in one! This Kuzco pendant combines the bright white, blue colors, and peek-a-boo interior looks. How fun!
Straps, Buckles, and Braces
This stunning chandelier shown below included the white trend as well as another we saw on home accessories and lighting. Leather straps! Leather and faux leather can add such tailored texture to any item. It can also help some styles lean to a more masculine look.
Also note that with all the gold, brass and brushed brass finishes we were seeing, we still spotted plenty of classic finishes like polished chrome. Light fixtures have always been referred to the “jewelry of a room” and this trend of adding and emphasizing joints and construction with straps, buckles, and braces is very fun! Instead of blending in the hardware for a fixture, these elements are celebrated!
We also got to preview the new Lauren Lighting collection available from our Generation Lighting line. This lighting series shown below rock the buckles and braces trend with a nod to the equestrian style Ralph Lauren is known for. Ask out team to see more of this amazing collection. The pieces are truly stunning investments for your home.
Over-sized and Unexpected Shapes
Scale can make is such an impact on a design. Sometimes at a market event like this, the size of the light fixtures can seem to be lost among the tall ceilings and overall giant scale of the event. But there is no avoiding some of the massive fixtures that we saw! Village Home Stores truly does have a light for any size project and budget. Don’t forget that we provide lighting for homes and businesses so if you have a restaurant, bar, office, boutique, or other setting in need of lighting impact give us a call.
We saw lights of all sizes and shapes at market. Not just playful new geometric shapes but so many organic and unique shapes. You can shop our lighting online anytime here on our website and even select and filter by category and finish. Something to note is that there are now so many exciting light fixtures available that don’t technically belong stuck in just one category. Many of the fixtures we suggest for our clients aren’t technically straight-forward “chandeliers” or “foyer” lights. That is why working with a lighting expert opens up your search into our own expert experience to think outside of the box for you.
Another home trend that has crossed over to multiple departments at Village Home Stores is the use of weathered woods. Of course our cabinetry department has offered many versions of this trend for long time, but every year more and more become available. Weathered finishes are a great way to add a wood tone and texture without fully committing to one wood and color for everything. What do we mean? Well consider this weathered oak fan below. It could be used in a room that includes gray or brown wood-tone furniture or all white furniture.
Weathered finishes take on their own unique and “storied” place in a design. We are loving the outdoor pendant lighting we spotted in the Savoy House booth. Imagine these weathered wood shutter pendants in your cozy outdoor patio space.
Cone and Dome Shapes
With so many fixtures to see it was interesting to notice that most of the new product launches introduced were either a cone or dome shape. While some lean heavily toward contemporary others are more transitional in style. And all seem to be available in such a variety of finish options and light styles.
So many of the lights we viewed at market were not just a one note finish. Two-toned / multi-finish fixtures were everywhere. Many dipping into the other mentioned trends of blues and whites. We love any part of an overall design concept that can introduce many finish options to the finished look. It makes selecting hardware, plumbing fixtures, and accessories exciting and more open to possibilities.
Seeing fixtures and glass illuminated in person just helps us out so much as designers. Seeing the quality of the brands we carry compared to those we don’t helps us to assure our customers and contractors that we curate our lighting brands for a reason.-Natasha Byers of the Village Lighting Team
