Moline, IL- Clear The Table From Your Family Clutter

It is no news that we believe the kitchen is the “hub” of the home. For many busy families that translates to the “hub” of all clutter! Bookbags, luchboxes, mail, schoolwork, the dog leash, the sports equipment… you see where we are headed with this. This Moline family of 5 (plus pets) was ready  for a kitchen remodel. When their designer asked what they really wanted to see with a new layout, their response was this: some way to keep the kitchen table clear. Before we share that solution, let’s start the tour with the familiar kitchen areas. This L-shape sink section includes a very common and functional layout. A range and microwave hood on one end, turn the corner with a base lazy susan cabinet to a sink beneath a window and dishwasher beside it.
A Moline, IL kitchen remodeled completely from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

The original kitchen layout included a peninsula on this wall extending into the kitchen. The new layout opens up the space by eliminating that peninsula and making room for a large kitchen table. Koch cabinetry in the Seneca doorstyle is installed in a Birch wood and “Mocha” stain. Glass 3″ x 6″ subway-style tiles have been installed in a herringbone design for the kitchen backsplash.A Moline, IL kitchen remodel including Hanstone Quartz and glass subway tile. | VillageHomeStores.com

The tile is from our American Olean line in the Color Appeal series and “Plaza Taupe” color. No backsplash was installed with these tops so the glass tile backsplash had more room for a statement with the pattern. The refrigerator wall now includes so much amazing storage!

A tall pantry cabinet fit with sliding shelves and a refrigerator end panel surround the refrigerator for a great look. The section of cabinetry on this same wall creates a great work surface that also serves as a coffee station. The wall cabinetry above is staggered in height and depth to add interest to this wall. Soffits have been removed from this kitchen so that the new cabinetry can reach to the ceiling. To compliment the deeper center cabinet above, the large stack of drawers in the base cabinetry is pulled forward. A Moline, IL kitchen remodel including Hanstone Quartz in the Victorian Sands design. | VillageHomeStores.com

This gives the opportunity to add interest and a furniture-style look with an arched toespace on the drawer cabinet. The Quartz kitchen counters mimic the creative shape of these cabinets and follow the in-out-in detail with soft radius corners on this bump-out area.A Moline, IL kitchen remodel including Hanstone Quartz in the Victorian Sands design. | VillageHomeStores.com

Hanstone Quartz countertops in the Victorian Sands color are a stunning choice for this Moline, IL home. Victorian Sands is a wonderful blend of neutral colors. It is one of those successful colors over the years in that it works with so many wood tones and pairs with just about any tile or paint selections. A standard “Eased” edge profile  is a classic choice. But what about that whole new area designed to somehow solve the clutter table issue? With the mission to control family clutter in mind, our designer went to work to create a new kitchen layout including a whole new third section of cabinetry across from the original kitchen.

What an amazing brand new custom drop-zone area fit with a bench seat and coathooks! A place for everything and everything in its place…and guess what?! The kitchen table (and even the kitchen countertops) are now all clear! By creating this designated “drop zone” area on the back wall of the kitchen, there is no excuse for anything to end up on the table at all. A bench seat built from functioning drawers is capped with a matching wood top. This offers a stylish surface for seating. Designing the drop zone into 4 sections helps to contain the clutter to each child’s area. Drop zones like this work best when located near the main entrance home for the users (i.e. back garage door entry).

Davenport, IA- Warm Cherry Cabinets and Large Black Painted Island

This Davenport, IA kitchen has been completely remodeled to extend its footprint into a nearby dining room. There is now plenty of space for a long L-shaped layout with a large island. Warm Cherry cabinetry from our DuraSupreme line has been installed in the full-overlay  “Kendall” doorstyle and “Clove” finish. A “Black” painted island in the same raised-panel doorstyle offers a bold contrast to the kitchen cabinets and new LVT White Oak flooring.

With the removal of a wall that divided the original kitchen from the dining room taken out, there is now plenty of space for a large kitchen island. The new island measures over 8 feet in length and includes large drawer storage and doors that open to reveal slide-out shelves within. Press play below to watch this entire remodel story unfold on Season 2 Episode 6 of the Village Home Show.

This episode of our show helps to walk you through the entire remodel process from start to finish with us. We often share just the before and after parts of a remodel story… but that is not the whole story at all! This episode allows us to return to the jobsite while the real work is happening. With our show, we are able to give you access to more of the entire story that went behind the beautiful finished kitchen tours we share here on the blog. Take a look at the before and after images from this kitchen below highlighting how much more cabinet space is now available with the center wall removed.Davenport kitchen before and after remodel. | VillageHomeStores.com

Because it can now stretch into the original dining room area, this new kitchen design is nearly double what it once was. There is even an area remaining for a casual dining space with 4 chairs. Just because we have absorbed the original dining room as part of the new kitchen, doesn’t mean this home is left without one. An adjacent front room has now been claimed as the new formal dining room area. The before and after image below shows the view into the new kitchen from this new front room dining area. Dining room becomes part of kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The window that now sits above the sink was far to low in the original dining room to accommodate a kitchen beneath it. A new window was installed at a taller height and now instead of looking up to a pass-through, the sink user gets a beautiful view! The cabinetry surrounding the new kitchen window has been finished with raised-panel ends for an added design detail. Can lighting is concealed behind a matching cherry valance and a cherry dustcover on the ceiling completes this look.

Beautiful Cambria® Quartz counters in the “Fairborne” design are installed in a standard “Eased” edge profile. A Tumbled Travertine tiled backsplash is a perfect match in tone adding a new texture against the smooth, polished quartz tops. A 50/50 well sink by Blanco in the “Biscotti” finish has been undermounted to the quartz.

The remodel process with Village Home Stores doesn’t begin on that first demo day. Your remodel starts with us in the store during the designing and material selection phases of your project. A wood hood look like the one shown above begins as a full-color rendered design you can see in your first presentation from our store. Renderings help you get a better vision for the finished space including the materials you have selected.

As you will see in the episode, there are plenty of specialty cabinets within this kitchen design. Dura Supreme offers a wide variety of pull-out options including knife blocks, spice racks, and this towel bar cabinet. Keep cleaning supplies accessible but separate from food with one of these unique specialty cabinets. This towel cabinet also works great in a bathroom or laundry room design.

Surrounding the refrigerator is a tall pantry cabinet that has been fit with adjustable slide-out shelving. There is a built-in pantry storage area on the end of the kitchen that is not shown in these images. That pantry can now be used for household items and food storage can be exclusively in this tall unit adjacent to the refrigerator.

The tall pantry is capped off with an open shelf cabinet that faces those entering from the garage-entry end of the kitchen. Applied doors have been attached to the end of this cabinet to sit flush with the pantry doors and customize the look. The shelves can be used to display seasonal decor, cookbooks, or decorative dishes. This design also works well on the end of an island as we have shown in this Moline kitchen tour.

Davenport, IA- A Kitchen Remodeled For Entertaining

This beautiful Davenport, IA home was in need of a new layout suited better for the large groups that are entertained there. Truth is, when you have a narrow galley kitchen in the back of your home, any group over two guests seems large. The complete project management team at Village Home Stores went to work and converted this narrow kitchen, and adjacent formal Dining and Living Rooms into one large open concept layout. The kitchen footprint itself has nearly tripled in size:
before after wall removed

The new kitchen stretches into the original formal Dining Room area and this bright and stylish new space has been completely transformed. “Pearl” painted cabinetry from our Koch Express line is installed in the “Camden” doorstyle. This has been paired with “Chakra Beige” engineered quartz counters and warm brushed gold accents in hardware and lighting selections. Kitchen color ideas white painted cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.comGold has shown a tremendous trending push this past year and is forecasted to stay on trend for quite some time. The look is stunning. We love the look of these two large pendant light fixtures above the kitchen island. Take a look at the same light fixture in a Master Bath we worked on in Moline, IL. “Biscuit” subway tile from the Rittenhouse Square series is installed throughout as the backsplash for this project. A classic look.

With the space now opened up, there is plenty of room for an island. Anyone who has visited or had a kitchen that includes a center island in the design will tell you that there is something almost magnetic about that island. No matter what the size or age of the crowd, they all are drawn to lean, sit, or work at the island. This new kitchen design in Davenport, IA embraces and enhances that idea. Take a look at the birdseye view of the new layout:renderingThe island is over 8′ long and 5′ deep. Not only is the island easily accessible from all areas of the layout, it is a large enough size to accommodate even the largest of crowds and let the homeowners navigate with plenty of space in the work zones of the kitchen. Including a center island in your design that isn’t home to the sink or cooktop helps to designate a space for guests to be while you are working in the kitchen. By keeping the island top clear of a sink or cooktop, this counter space now becomes the most versatile work surface in the entire home. This large of an island makes a statement in size so another detail was added to dress up the look. Two edge profiles were used on the quartz tops.two edges on kitchen counters

A decorative “Ogee” edge (shown above on left) profile wraps the quartz island top and a standard “Eased” edge (right) profile is used on the perimeter of the kitchen. The main kitchen sink is an E-granite composite sink made by Elkay. The “Biscuit” color selected is the perfect compliment to the quartz color. A soft, “eyebrow” arch at the top of this sink style leaves the perfect location for a single-drill faucet fixture. Elkay e granite sink in biscuitNotice the center divider of the sink is shorter than expected? This low-divider layout allows you the option of a shallow sink fill when needed, but the space to fit and wash large pots and pans as well. A second sink is located in the wet bar area where the original kitchen once sat. Lighted glass-front cabinets surround a custom area for a flat screen TV. All of this is book-ended by two large pantry cabinets.  TV above bar in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

Having a second sink can be a fantastic feature when you have an open-concept kitchen. Access from 4 different entrances to this kitchen means that this small bar sink may be used for any number of tasks. It is easy to picture this wet bar area stocked up for the Holidays as a beverage station. Bar sink in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comHaving this detached from the main kitchen work areas allows the main kitchen users to continue to have their own space and sink to work at. Nobody will be in the way to grab a drink and congregate at the island. This kitchen island is deep enough that even if it were used to serve from, the back of it still allows space for seated guests. refr_wallThere is so much storage in the new kitchen. Wall cabinets stretch to the ceiling and crown molding completes the look. With the new open concept to the home layout, a consistent flooring was needed to blend all of the new spaces together seamlessly. The original formal Dining Room has been absorbed into the new kitchen space. The formal Living Room is now the Dining Room and all of these areas now have a gorgeous Hickory hardwood from our LW Mountain line. The “Durango” stained hardwood is modeled here by “Mr. Darcy” who has claimed this spot behind the island for his own post-Thanksgiving meal nap.

That still leaves a lot of seats for guests around this huge island. 4 bar stools fit under the back of the island overhang and two more on the ends of the deep top. This added seating for 6 is well within sight and earshot from the new formal Dining Room. There is now a large area ready for Holiday entertaining.

Bettendorf, IA- Once Upon a Time… Beige Met Gray…

A Classic tale of Gray meets Beige… Ok fine this might not seem like a classic tale but trust us, warm gray tones are everywhere in the home finishes industries. Say goodbye to Beige everywhere and say hello to the new neutral: Gray. Not always bland and cold as stone, Gray tones can be warm and inviting. Someplace between Gray and Beige is… “Greige“! This Bettendorf, IA kitchen showcases the perfect palette for this neutral color concept.
Kitchen remodeled in Bettendorf, IA | VillageHomeStores.com

The original kitchen in this home was a medium stained Oak cabinet with neutral toned countertops. Once ready for an update and a brighter look, this Bettendorf home is now a magazine-cover worthy space. Take a look at the transformation.
before

Painted white cabinetry from our Koch Classic line has been given a “Smoke” highlight accent and a wood hood and kitchen island is painted in the “Fog” finish. The “Legacy” doorstyle is a fantastic choice that provides many edges and details that the “Smoke” highlight can catch up on. A decorative wood hood in the accent color is fit with a Broan hood insert within it.
Gray and white kitchen remodel in Bettendorf, IA | VillageHomeStores.com

That same “Fog” painted finish from the hood is found on the kitchen island that includes an overhang and seating for two at counter-height. While you may think next to the kitchen sink is the best location for your pull-out waste basket cabinet, an island can be a better choice. Include this cabinet within reach of the sink user but easy to access for guests when entertaining. A waste basket cabinet in the island can be easy to find and keep the sink area from getting too crowded.

We have to admit that sometimes one element of a complete design stands out as the “MVP”. In this kitchen it is absolutely the tile backsplash! This geometric mosaic tile by Glazzio is from the “Excalibur Series” in the “Winter Fjord” color. It perfectly blends both cabinet finishes, the countertop selection, and the flooring together. Our Diode L.E.D. undercabinet lighting system showcases this tile perfectly and the look is amazing day or night.

Whirlpool front control range. | VillageHomeStores.comBelow the painted hood and that amazing tile backsplash sits Whirlpool’s front-control gas range with True Convection features in Stainless Steel. One of our favorite features on this model aside from the convection is the Frozen Bake™ option. Select this feature to cook frozen foods faster by eliminating the need to preheat the oven. Just select the food type, temperature, and cook time listed on the frozen item’s package and the oven will start customizing. Now you can cook frozen pizza 31% faster, and even lasagna, chicken nuggets, fries and pies can get from the oven to the table in less time. No more preheating before your get started. The preheat process is included in the bake time. Tall storage cabinetry in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comYou will find plenty of pantry storage on the refrigerator wall of the new kitchen design. Two tall pantry cabinets surround the refrigerator area and varied depths have been used to utilize the space as much as possible. Notice the change in depths in this profile view below of the pantry wall:sliding shelves in pantry. | VillageHomeStores.com

Plenty of pantry storage plus two slide-out bins in the end base cabinet. Also note the exposed ends of the cabinetry in this kitchen. In place of a smooth, painted finished end matching cabinet doors have been applied for a gorgeous finished look. Including “Applied Door Ends” is an exceptionally nice detail in a kitchen with a mitered and glazed doorstyle like this.  Not to go un-noticed is a gorgeous farmhouse sink in this kitchen. A design selection that is a statement all in itself, this Whitehaus smooth-front apron sink is an instantly classic look. Farm sink in Bettendorf, IA kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The farm sink has been undermounted to Cambria’s “Torquay” quartz counters in the standard “Eased” edge profile. This Cambria design adds a perfectly polished and upscale look without overpowering the backsplash tile with too much pattern. This entire design is about balance. Balancing accent colors, pattern, texture, even hardware sizes. Having a designer with you during every decision for your project helps you get the end result you have been dreaming of. Vinyl flooring Bettendorf, IA. | VillageHomeStores.com

All of these selections sit on top of a luxury vinyl tile by Armstrong. This 12″ x 24″ LVT is from the “Alterna” series in the “Silver Shimmer” color. Moline, IL- The Best Remodels Are The Ones You Never Knew Happened

The best remodels are the ones you never knew happened? What on Earth do we mean by this?!? Simply that a kitchen (or any well-designed space) should look naturally “at home” in your home. The fact that it has been remodeled recently shouldn’t necessarily be a dead giveaway.  If that is apparent, you run the risk of it looking “dated” within 5 years or so. This is especially true for historic homes. Making classic choices in materials and application that enhance and compliment your home are always the right choices. A great example of this is a kitchen remodel we recently completed in Moline, IL. This new kitchen looks perfectly at home in the space yet updated with modern touches at the same time. We will confidently be able to say the same thing years down the road. Remodeled Moline, IL kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A cabinet design using our Koch Classic line is installed in the “Prairie” doorstyle in a painted “White” finish. A single slab-style drawer front has been selected for the drawers. Floating shelves in an Oak wood stained in a “Mocha” finish accent the sink wall.  Neutral gray tone-on tone Engineered Quartz counters break up the space and a dark hardwood floor adds drama to the completed look. farmhouse kitchen ideas | VillageHomeStores.com

beforeThe original kitchen was in this same area of the back of the home. For storage however, only a single wall of cabinetry surrounding the sink was installed. This left an empty wall for the range to rest on and a refrigerator to float on another. Not ideal for a busy family. Also take into consideration ther is no dishwasher in the original layout. put a drying rack on that countertop and now there is even less space available. The new layout converts this single-wall design into an L-shape and adds storage in every inch possible. Added storage and plenty of added counter space that is so important surrounding the cooking center of the new kitchen. With the range wall now included in the cabinetry layout, the sink wall can have a more open look. Instead of a solid block of built-in cabinetry, there are glass-front cabinets and contrasting floating shelves.  The same dark wood finish from the floors is repeated in the oak floating shelves installed to the left of the sink. These floating shelves add a modern detail to the New-Traditional styled space. Painted white kitchen ideas. | VillageHomeStores.comFloating shelves in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comThese floating shelves are balanced by the classic glass-front cabinet doors on the opposite side of the sink. The best result from this new cabinet design on the sink wall is how open and uncrowded the user at the sink now feels. Natural light pours in from the window above the sink as well as the others on the back wall of the home. An always classic choice in a kitchen design like this is the use of an apron-front or “farmhouse” sink. This single decision can make such a huge impact of the finished look of the kitchen. This 26″ wide single-well apron sink has been under-mounted to Engineered Quartz counters in the “Fossil Gray” color. A standard “Eased” edge is another classic choice for the project.  A heavy and ornate “Ogee” edge would seem out of place here.

farm_sinkAnother classic choice is the application of an apron sink. It is almost impossible to imagine this kitchen without an apron-front sink. Of course the most effortlessly classic pairing with an apron-front sink is subway tile. This kitchen takes that concept and steps it up a bit with an incredible material detail: an elongated size. Long Subway Tile backsplash in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

While a classic subway tile may measure 3″ x 6″, these elongated tiles from our American Olean line are 2″ x 8″. The series is named “Urban Canvas” and the color is “Ice White”. This exaggerates the classic look of subway tile and makes a huge impact with the detail. The use of simple and clean lines in the details of your overall design can help spotlight other key areas.  A subtle gray quartz top doesn’t distract from the overall look. By selecting a complimenting gray grout to the quartz counters it helps to showcases the tile shape. dishwasher_with_third_rack

The kitchen appliances selected for this Moline home bring modern conveniences and a high-end look to the space. KitchenAid’s new look gets you professional-level results and appearance.  The new kitchen layout now includes a space for this Stainless Steel dishwasher. A third rack on the interior of this dishwasher makes it easy to clean hard-to-place items such as spatulas, serving utensils and measuring cups, freeing up space in the lower two racks. Speaking of space, the range in this kitchen has a lot of it and it is just a 30″ range! This 30″ Gas convection Slide-In Range  has a great look and a lot of fantastic features including a baking drawer.
Warming drawer | VillageHomeStores.com

Yes you read that correctly. This isn’t just a warming drawer, it is a baking drawer! This range comes armed with the easy to use drawer that allows you to keep warm, slow cook or bake at a different temperature from the oven plus the ability to keep dishes warm. The ability to bake at two temperatures and a total oven capacity of 6.5 cu. ft. This range is ready for your largest of dinner parties. kitchen_painted_white

cooktopThis gas unit from KitchenAid measures 30″ in width and fits any current opening that a freestanding range may leave. The cooktop on the unit boasts a 5-burner layout. 5 burners with a wide range of cooking power from 5,000 to 19,000 BTU’s. Everything from a rolling boil to a delicate simmer is covered. The continuous grates make it easy to slide from burner to burner if needed.
