Hazelwood Homes- Kitchen With Blue Island and Schoolhouse Lights
Posted: January 25, 2018
If you have been looking at any kitchens within the past few years the terms reclaimed, restored, re-purposed, farmhouse, or salvaged may have appeared more than once to describe a space. With the rise and continued interest in Modern Farmhouse style, this week’s featured kitchen may be right in your wheelhouse! Because of our location, kitchens we have designed in our area of the Midwest have many times included Modern Farmhouse details. With more access to images of finished spaces, our customers feel they have more license to take chances and have fun with it! Like these salvaged red schoolhouse lights for instance…
Have you started to see more blue and green painted cabinetry online and in magazines? Yes you read that question right! Blue and green are both trending heavily in our industry! It may seem like a bold choice to include a painted blue island in your kitchen design but this look is actually very classic. Our Koch Cabinetry line has recently launched a great cabinet finish named “Charcoal Blue” and we have already installed it in many Quad City area homes!
Paired with this blue painted cabinet is a subtle painted finish named “Oyster” also from Koch. The “Oyster” color bridges the gap between white and gray. It is a soft, dove-gray color that suits many styles of spaces. The doorstyle in this kitchen is the “Prairie” door and a slab drawer front has been applied.
Two large schoolhouse-style pendant lights hang as a statement above the kitchen island. This look is so on-trend right now but these lights don’t just give that restoration and re-purposed look, they really have a history with the family! They were originally salvaged from an old schoolhouse, then used in a family business before being installed here in Coal Valley, IL.
There were other lights from the same schoolhouse that have now been sent over to France for a project. We love it when little pieces of family history can be included in a kitchen design! While we didn’t provide these pendant lights for this home, we do have access to very similar pendants! Schoolhouse style lighting can be ordered in a number of styles, sizes, and finishes. Since the lights make a big statement on their own, the back wall with the hood is subtle. Two glass door cabinets flank a microwave hood area.
A single-well undermount sink has been installed in the kitchen island. The countertops in this kitchen space are a natural stone named “White Wave”. Within the slabs there are a number of neutral colors. Whites and grays dance around but so do muted blues. There are even a few flecks of a cranberry color which is a nice detail with the statement red pendants above.
There is an overhang on the back of the kitchen island that has been curved with a radius to soften the shape. Beneath the top, flat-stock steel support brackets have been notched into and installed in the cabinetry. This allows the granite tops more points of contact to balance the weight of the counter safely.
What would a red, white and blue kitchen be without a star? Well this space has one! Village Home Stores also provided some of the lighting for this home including this unique brass star fixture from our ELK line. The shadows it casts on the ceiling are so amazing!
