We just returned from a whirlwind of a weekend in Nashville, TN where we attended a summit held by our BrandSource buying group. Events like these are so valuable to our small business because we are able to connect and learn from other stores similar to Village. By making these connections, we can learn together and educate ourselves in ways to make YOUR Village experience even better! Village Home Stores is a BrandSource member so that we can offer our customers prices competitive with the big box stores paired with a customer experience that is the very best out there.

Connecting with other stores and service offices and sharing our stories allows us to all be “Better Together” (which was actually the title of this year’s summit event). We spent our days learning about ways we can better this customer experience for you in store and online. We also spent many many hours training on the new product launches announced for our Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana brands. We saw a LOT of exciting new things this weekend so we thought we would share a recap about these new and exciting products, some of which are already en route to the Village showroom. Here is a peek at what Tammy, Rob, and Elizabeth saw in Music City!

A Smart Wall Oven You Can Grill In!

The new product launch that carried the most “buzz” around the show was KitchenAid’s new Smart Oven with Powered Attachments. Available in a single, double, and combination microwave / wall oven, this wall oven series has truly elevated the use for any home cook that loves the process and full experience of cooking at home. For the Village Home Stores customers who loves to cook , you are going to want to press play below to see some sneak peeks from the show floor…

Yes! That is in fact a grill attachment that can be used indoors! There are two other powered attachments that come with this smart oven, but we have to begin with the grill. A base with heating elements connects to the wall oven and atop that, the grill attachment “caps” the coils to create a grill surface. This patent-pending design minimizes smoke that can be created by flares when grease hits the coil. With the coils encased, this grill attachment makes the Midwest year-round grilling dream a reality!

The KitchenAid smart oven with powered attachments allow you to grill year round indoors! The grill coils are covered by the top plate so that grease will not drip down onto the coils to cause smoking. | villagehomestores.com

Smart Ovens come with three powered attachments: a grill, a steamer, and an element-heated baking stone. Of course we must add that of course the Smart Oven can be used as a standard bake oven and also includes convection features and assisted convection conversion. You can use this versatile wall oven with or without the powered attachments. Have you ever used a baking stone? The biggest issue is that you are supposed to preheat that stone reeeeeally far ahead of using it to get the best results. With the powered baking stone attachment resting right on top of the elements, you can skip that step all together! Get consistent, and crisp results on a stone that can fit up to a 14″ pizza.

The steam attachments are also incredible! Any serious home-chef knows that cooking with steam helps to infuse moisture and added flavor that can’t be matched! This powered attachment can fit enough sides and meat to feed a family of four all in one pan! You can even use this attachment to cook with the steam pan and no lid in the “steam assist” mode. The steamer is dishwasher-safe and can easily clean up with soap and water.

This wall oven is like a home-chef’s Swiss army knife. It has so many features all packed into one location in a kitchen! Being able to prepare such a flavorful meal all in one pan for a last-minute small dinner party sounds like a dream! You can prepare the meat, vegetables, pasta, all in one pan! The pre-programmed recipes for the steam attachment all sound like a delicious way to learn how to use your new oven!

Imagine being able to grill indoors during the entire Winter season we have just endured! Seeing how the grill coils were wrapped with the top casing, now I understand how there was virtually no smoke involved while Chef Ann was making so many burgers in that wall oven!

Recipe Guidance and Connectivity:

We really wish this blog had a scratch-and-sniff feature so you could smell those incredible sirloin chorizo burgers Chef Ann was grilling up! Ann showed us as she was working how the recipe guide mode walks you through each step. She even got a notification on her phone as she was talking to us that it was time to flip the burgers over.

That notification to flip the burgers is a great example of how connected smart home appliances can help keep your busy household on track to a great meal. Imagine having guests over while entertaining in your back patio and getting a notification on your Apple watch that the oven is preheated, or your meal timer is ending. The WiFi and app features rolling out with KitchenAid all are there to help give you the best experience AND results while cooking in your kitchen.

A New Look For Commercial Ranges!

We were also able to take a peek at the redesign of the commercial ranges from KitchenAid. These units now pair better with other KitchenAid items as a suite with handles and include great new options for accent colors (shown below in “Navy”)

I’m really excited to see this redesign for the commercial ranges. Now the handles can better match the rest of the kitchen suite and the connected features added are great! I would love the remote-enabled option to preheat and monitor my oven as I am leaving work headed home.

-Rob Ries, Co-Owner of Village Home Stores

Smart home tech is not just limited to our KitchenAid line of product. The first to introduce connected appliances was Whirlpool and they continue to add to their connected appliance features. Whirlpool has added even more connected models and the Yummly partnership has proven to be a very great integration. If you aren’t familiar with it, Yummly is an extremely popular recipe search engine that allows you to search for recipes online that fit within your own dietary restrictions and ingredient availability! Now you can take that found recipe one step further by sending the recipe directly to your smart appliances for instruction.

As you can see in the video above, Yummly users can even image-capture the physical items you have on hand and search recipes online. The Whirlpool and Yummly features have now been available for some time and they keep getting better and better!

Maytag’s New Cast Iron Finish!

Village co-owner Rob Ries checks out the new Maytag Cast Iron finish shown on the expo floor at the 2019 AVB Brandsource BetterTogetherSummit in Nashville TN

We had heard Maytag may be rolling out a new finish but didn’t realize we would have a chance to see it in person so soon! Seeing the new “Cast Iron” color was exciting! This finish is a more rugged, darker look than our Black Stainless products. Cast Iron is a matte black finish without the brushed look of a Black Stainless. This new finish, on the sturdy, dependable Maytag line is a great look! Speaking of sturdy and dependable, how about a Maytag dryer so large and strong dealers were climbing into it!

Laundry Features Fit For a King!

Now that’s a capacity and commercial-grade parts illustration we loved seeing in action! We were also glad to not have to climb in ourselves to get the point across to you. Large capacity with the best cleaning in the industry is a major need for many of our Village Home Stores laundry customers. How about a large-capacity agitator washer that can a fit king-sized comforter!? We saw it with our own eyes!

A Maytag large capacity top load washer with agitator that fits a king-sized comforter! | villagehomestores.com

Now of course we should mention that while this washer boasts a large capacity and great cleaning action… it is very large itself! Please work closely with your Village Home Stores appliance team to make sure you have the space to get this washer and dryer pair into your home and in place. There was great news from the Whirlpool laundry products including many changes to the front load lines. The Load & Go system of pre-loading detergent can now store up to 40 loads of laundry detergent. If you use our Excelsior HE product, that is more like 60-120 loads because our detergent is 6x concentrated. Our staff can help show you how to enter that info as you load your detergent and then you will be all set for many months without even refilling.

The new load-and-go system in the Whirlpool frontload laundry line allows you to pre-load even more loads of detergent to make laundry easier! | villagehomestores.com

We saw so much more than we can get to in this recap (and don’t worry we did manage to see a lot of great live music too while in Nashville). We look forward to featuring some of these new features in upcoming projects here on the blog. Of course you can shop our appliances online, anytime at villagehomestores.com but you may also stop by our showroom to see us in person. Thank you to BrandSource for the incredible business workshops and training this weekend. We are thrilled to partner with other businesses to offer the competitive prices and award-winning service experience they expect from Village Home Stores. We truly are better together.

Moline Quad Cities Kitchen Remodel With Wall Removed

This week’s featured project takes us to a home in Moline, IL that was in need of an update to brighten and open up the existing kitchen. We removed soffits, a portion of a wall, dark oak cabinetry, plus dated counters and appliances to create an airy and bright new space. We think you will love the new kitchen design. Take a look at what was selected:

Subway tile backsplash in Ababescato Carrara marble. Complete kitchen remodels from start to finish. | villagehomestores.com

We had recently remodeled a nearby bathroom for this customer that is just around the corner. This Arabescato Carrara Marble subway tile is a material choice that carries over from that bath remodel project into the kitchen. We love the way the natural stone brings a unique mix of grays and even a subtle blue tint to the kitchen space. This blend of bright whites and subtle grays are what allows the light to bounce around this bright kitchen.

With soffits removed, the new cabinetry can stretch all the way to the ceiling in a flat-panel door named “Prairie” by our Koch Classic Cabinetry line. The cabinets have been finished with a White paint. The U-shaped kitchen layout has only had one appliance location change, moving the dishwasher closer to the sink. You can see the original location for the dishwasher was clear across the room (see below).

Not only were we able to move the dishwasher to a more useful location, we were even able to squeeze a lazy susan cabinet in the corner instead of the original “blind corner” cabinet. We just love how bright and clean this new kitchen looks with the materials selected. Flat panel white kitchen cabinetry may sound like a basic choice, but it is truly the best transitional platform you can give yourself for a kitchen or bathroom space. White cabinetry can be styled so many ways and to suit so many tastes. In this home, the white cabinets have an almost art gallery effect on the curated framed artwork and decor items allowing them to pop.

This KitchenAid dishwasher is just part of an entire package of Stainless Steel appliances that are truly built for those who love the cooking process. Recognize this gas range? That may be because it was also the gas range model from our last kitchen featured here on the blog. This 30″ wide front-control gas range includes convection features and 5 burners on top.

KitchenAid low profile microwave hood and 700ESS gas range in a remodeled Quad Cities kitchen from Village Home Stores. Complete kitchen remodels from start to finish. | villagehomestores.com

We love the new design of KitchenAid’s front-control ranges because they give you the look of a custom, slide-in range but they fit into a standard 30″ wide opening. Yes! That means if you have a standard gas range right now, this KSGG700ESS will slide right into that opening and give you a clean and professional look. But did you notice that microwave hood was a little shorter than normal?

KitchenAid low profile microwave hood in a remodeled Quad Cities kitchen from Village Home Stores. Complete kitchen remodels from start to finish. | villagehomestores.com

The new low-profile microwave hood launched by KitchenAid is a game-changer! Do you currently have a range hood installed beneath a cabinet and wish you could install a microwave hood there? This is the model for you! Now without modifying the height of that top cabinet, this 10.3″ tall model can be installed allowing you 500 CFMs of ventilation plus a microwave cavity that still fits a full dinner plate and definitely that fully-popped bag of popcorn. What does 500 CFMs look like in power? Take a peek at this example on the right compared to a standard microwave hood:

For those who love the cooking process and tend to make some smoke while working in the kitchen, this is the microwave hood you need! Learn more about this new style of microwave hood in a recent segment from the Village Home Show. Press play below to hear what Rachele and Elizabeth learned about them:

These microwave hoods are a welcome addition to an existing kitchen just in need of a new functional look, but also looks right at home in this new design. This Moline, IL kitchen was remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. What does that mean? That means that the client teamed up with us and our Complete Project Management team to organize every step of the process with them. All kitchen designs with us begin with the same initial consult meeting in-store. From there, our project management clients are given a whole different checklist of events than our DIY clients.

One of the key moments in this Project Management remodel process is the contractor meeting during the estimating process. We arrange a meeting in your home with all of the crews who will be bidding the work. We then discuss what needs to be estimated for the project and from there we can not only present you with a more accurate total project number, we can also spell out all of your work included in an inclusion sheet. In this Quad Cities home we removed a section of a wall dividing the kitchen and dining room spaces (see before and after below).

With that work to be done (plus electrical, tile, carpentry, and plumbing work) we had a full schedule of events to get us to the finish line. That meant we needed to schedule multiple crews for the best use of time and in the right order to get this kitchen done by the Holidays. We did! We know your time is valuable and nobody enjoys living in a home during the remodel process so we try and keep to using reliable and efficient crews who are used to working together and can keep us all on track. If all that sounds overwhelming, don’t worry! Village Home Stores will do all of that schedule work for you.

We also transformed another wall in the kitchen design. We removed a fireplace from the end of the original kitchen and gave that wall a whole new function. Now there is a gorgeous wine sideboard cabinet centered on the space and we have added pantry fronts to match the kitchen cabinet doors.

Before and after image of remodeled kitchen with fireplace removed and winecabinet added in Moline, IL. Complete remodel from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

Each of those tall doors open to deep, shelved storage and a broom/cleaning closet area. We love how this end of the kitchen has now become a part of the kitchen design itself. We included a glass door cabinet at the center of the space and two wine cubby base cabinets for storage and decoration.

Wood countertops can also be ordered from Village Home Stores. This one came from the same shop that built our cabinetry. By using a wood top on a sideboard element like this, your result is a more built-in and furniture look for the section of cabinetry. Have a nearby dining room or home office that could use some cabinetry design? Don’t hesitate to contact Village. We can save you a lot of time shopping for the right piece of furniture and instead build you the perfect one!

On the subject of countertop surfaces, allow is to introduce you to this marble-look engineered quartz surface by Cambria Quartz. This is the Brittanicca design in a standard eased edge. The large-format marble pattern gives you the look and character of a marble surface with the no-hassle and worry-free piece of mind quartz surfaces offer.

A perfect compliment to the marble look Brittanicca quartz counters, the true marble tile selected for the kitchen backsplash is stunning. Arabescato Carrara has subtle variations from tile to tile and it is just enough to bring natural stone character to the space. We also installed our Radiant Collection series of switches and outlets throughout the remodeled kitchen design. White plates and fixtures were a great choice to seamlessly blend in with the overall look. Notice one of our favorite features of this series… no visible screws on the backplates!

Of course we added creative storage solutions anywhere we could for this customer in their cabinetry. Pull-out cabinets, tray dividers, sliding shelves and more. In remodel situations like these, you many times only have a handful of cabinets to work with in a design. You must make the most of that space and our experts are here to help you do that.

With the dividing wall partially removed, we were able to install a new peninsula area to add a lot of cabinet storage and a stunning arched countertop surface with an overhang for casual seating. Village Home Stores Staff Soup Cookoff wemakeavillage

Last week at Village Home Stores we held our second annual Staff Soup Cook-Off and almost immediately when we started posting photos from it to our social media we had messages coming in with requests for recipes. We had many entries this year and once again, each was different from the next! It was pretty much the best work potluck on a snowy February day EVER!

Before we get to all of the delicious recipes we have to of course give a proper shoutout to this year’s winner of the coveted “Golden Ladle” ::: drumroll ::: congratulations to MaryBeth Farber for her winning Baked Potato Soup!!! Of course she was very excited to beat last year’s winner Gregg Swanson (he looks thrilled doesn’t he).

The winner of the Village Home Stores Staff Soup Cookoff was MaryBeth. She was beyond thrilled to steal the title from her brother in law Gregg who won last year.

The winning recipe was MaryBeth’s Baked Potato Soup! She also staged up her serving station with decorations and had a whole buffet of toppings for the soup. If you are looking to find a delicious winter soup to feed the masses this is your new favorite!

McClellan Heights Kitchen Remodel With White Cabinets and Honed Granite

Kitchen remodeled from start to finish in the McClellan Heights district of Davenport, IA by Village Home Stores.

There are so many incredible homes and unique neighborhoods in the Quad Cities area. Such a storied history down each road. The McClellan Heights district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, at which time it included 354 buildings that were decided to contribute to the historic character of the area. Not just limited to the Village of East Davenport, this area technically stretches from Jersey Ridge road to the Bettendorf City Limits and from River Drive to Middle Road. There is such a history to the area dating back to the American Civil War. We are so blessed to get to be a part of many of the kitchen and bathroom restorations of these important properties in our community. The homes are unique and eclectic in period styles and details and many even boast views of the Mississippi River. We were thrilled to renovate the kitchen in one recently and want to show you how it turned out. Take a look!

When renovating historic homes, every material selection and inch of storage space should be considered by an expert. These homes were built with that relentless attention to detail and great craftsmanship. You simply are doing yourself (and your return investment) a disservice for your property if you don’t respect the remodeling projects in your historic home. For this kitchen we chose to install a classic, flat-panel cabinet style in a painted “White” finish. The door is a full-overlay door named “Savannah” from our Koch Classic line. The cabinetry includes full-extension soft-close drawer guides and soft-close doors.

The countertop surfaces for this kitchen give the look of a classic soapstone material. They are actually a Honed Black Pearl Granite in an eased edge profile. While “matte black” finishes are currently on-trend for kitchen and bath projects… they have always been on trend for historic properties! The soft, leathered look of a honed natural stone is a wonderful choice for both style and performance. A 30″ Classico Fireclay farmsink was under-mounted to the island top to complete the look. To keep the kitchen counters clean, and offer a more stylish option for a kitchen hood we tucked the microwave out of sight in the island (see below). These base microwave cabinets can be a great location for larger appliances that can sometimes clutter up a countertop area.

Keeping the kitchen feeling airy and light are the two new Kichler “Everly” pendant lights that hang above the island. The clear glass shape gives an old world look and the dark Oil Rubbed Bronze metal finish marries well with the countertop selection. Our lighting experts at Village Home Stores can help you select a whole home of lighting or that one perfect fixture for your space. Learn more and shop our lighting selections here online.

Classic, white-painted cabinetry can be a great nod to the past while pairing so well with modern elements like appliances and kitchen accessories. White kitchens like this never go out of style. We choose to install a wood cabinet hood with a blower insert within it. Using a stainless chimney hood here could shift the style of the space into a more modern category. This cabinet hood instead gives the function of a 390 CFM Broan Blower and blends in perfectly with the surrounding cabinetry.

Soho Subway Tile in the classic 3″ x 6″ size is installed in white with a white grout. Our Radiant series of switches and outlets is installs clean with no visible screws. Our bestselling Diode LED undercabinet lighting is installed here on a dimmer switch for ambient low-voltage light and bright, functional task lighting. KitchenAid’s 30″ wide 700 series -burner gas range with convection oven is a powerhouse of a kitchen appliance! Packed with incredible features and versatile cooktop, this range is perfect for home chefs who truly love the cooking process. Shop our Local Low-Priced Guarantee on all appliances here.

Old homes typically don’t have large kitchen or bathroom spaces to work with. Homeowners need to work with an expert kitchen designer to make the most of their space. Of course we packed great storage solutions in the cabinetry anywhere we could. Slide-out shelves, large drawers, a pullout wastebasket and slideout tray divider (shown below).

We even extended the main kitchen into the dinette area by installing a custom bench seat. The bench seat drops down below the windows and turns the corner to provide seating for an antique table. Some of the bench is even functional storage! Drawers (shown below) provide great storage space for seat cushions, placemats, even pantry items if needed.

We love the faucet that the customer selected for their home. The bridged look of the handle controls and faucet gives a great old world feel. A low-key modern detail is the push-button garbage disposal we installed in the kitchen island. This single button (shown below to the right of faucet) adds a low-profile modern amenity for the kitchen user. Bright Polished Chrome accents on the Top Knobs cabinetry hardware and Kohler kitchen faucet are also a nod to the restoration style.

Historic homes and properties are a fantastic location to invest in natural stone countertop surfaces like granite, marble, and quartzite. Surfaces that have a history of their own can be such a wonderful investment for your project. We partner with Epic Stone warehouse and Surface Resource fabrication to get you the very best quality of surfaces and installation/seamwork available in the Iowa and Illinois region. Press play below to take a look behind the scenes at the fabrication process for your granite tops.

Of course every historic home has many stories, and this remodel is now another story for this home. We are just so thrilled to have been trusted to be a part of it. Inviting our team into your home is not something we take lightly. To see more of this kitchen remodel tour including a peek at what it looked like before we began the remodel, visit the full project here on Houzz.

“We have a lot of fun every year at the Home Show. We try and make our booth open, inviting, and exciting. This show is our opportunity to invite guests into our booth to meet our team and get all of their questions answered about our store and our process”

-Elizabeth Round, Village Team Member

This year we installed a lighting grouping that focused on some of the current trends we are seeing in finish and style. “Gold” finishes are definately back in style but the new take on this trend is subtle, brushed, and can be blended with other metals and finishes well. We have seen lighting trends shift from a Farmhouse style into a more Coastal look. We had a lot of interest in the weathered, wooden-beaded chandelier from our booth.

We included two engineered quartz countertops in our cabinet displays this year. We answered so many questions about countertop surfaces and their differences from guests who visited us. The large kitchen island we displayed included one of our promotional-priced quartz surfaces named “Rolling Fog” (shown below on left with Ogee Edge). The back wall of our booth had a stunning statement quartz surface from our Cambria Quartz line. The Skara Brae design (shown above on right) blends on-trend grays and whites in an innovative natural-stone lookalike pattern. This series of quartz from Cambria offers you the look of a marble pattern with the maintenance-free piece of mind you get by investing in quartz surfaces.
