Applestone Homes- An Urban Farmstead in the Iowa QC

The Modern Farmhouse style has taken the ENTIRE country by storm. Of course the Midwest Region has embraced this style because… well we were all already on board! We are so lucky to partner with a local builder that masters this look in a refined and stylish way. Take a look at the kitchen in an urban farmstead recently built by Applestone Homes in the heart of the Iowa Quad Cities.

The Modern Farmhouse style is about large, airy, and spacious spaces full of character and texture. Kitchen designs including islands and casual dining spaces built for gathering. Finding new ways to style a space with antiques and unique pieces. Nothing new to our Quad Cities market! The perimeter of this kitchen design includes cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Prairie” door and painted “Pearl” finish.

If large spaces for gathering to prepare, eat, and enjoy means Modern Farmhouse… this island is expert-level farmhouse! Just look at that huge, open counter perfect for so many functions. Large drawer stacks face the cooking zone of the kitchen for pots, pans, and serving dishes. The island and pantry cabinets are in the “Hastings” door and a Rustic Beech wood stained the “Stone” finish.

One huge advantage to embracing the Modern Farmhouse style in the Quad Cities vs. anywhere else… the views out of the window. An apron-front sink that looks out to watch the Midwest seasons change is one of the best gifts you can give any new home owner.

We love the back panel design selected for the kitchen island. The “X” style is a nod to barn doors and also helps to break up the smooth paneled surface. We didn’t just provide the kitchen cabinetry design for this home. We also provided a bar area and bath cabinetry.

This Master Bathroom is so gorgeous. The same “Stone” stain in a Rustic Beech wood has been applied to the “Vicksburg” doorstyle. We love the break in the heights and depths of the cabinetry. It creates interest and helps to divide the two sink areas.Vanity tops with integrated sinks make for easy cleanup. A two-toned color selection from The Onyx Collection gives the illusion of an under-mounted vanity bowl.

In the Powder Room is a furniture-style vanity. Some hidden storage beneath the sink and an open shelf below. This entire home is Modern Farmhouse perfection! We are always so happen when our products can be installed expertly and then styled tastefully. Applestone Homes masters both of these key elements in creating a comfortable but impressive new home for their clients.

Geneseo, IL- Historic Home Remodeled and Updated With Nods to History.

When you remodel a home you are writing a part of its history. Every renovation, small or large, becomes an entry into the timeline of that property. Many times our client’s personal style choices drive the selections and design decisions entirely. In a historic home the home itself also influences decisions. When our expert kitchen remodeling team takes on a project in a Historical property, we are so honored to become a part of that history.Historic home deserve expert design and craftsmanship. Kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

This historic home in Geneseo, IL has seen many changes to the property over time including kitchen renovations. The most recent remodel we just completed at the home allowed the owners to update the layout, function, and working elements of the kitchen without losing the historic character that the space deserves. Allow us to show you around this beautiful new space…Kitchen remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores in a Historic Geneseo, IL home. True of many older homes, there are doorways and unique wall spaces to consider when laying out the new design. The completed new layout now includes a back wall with the cooking center, refrigerator wall with pantry area, single-level island with sink, and a new hutch area. The contrast from before to after below showcases that a shift in material selection alone can make any space seem brighter and larger.

Before and after from a Historic homes remodel. Kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

The new kitchen seems much larger than the original but no walls were removed. In fact we ADDED many cabinets to this kitchen. Including a new lighting plan and selecting brighter finishes help to make the space seem spacious and timeless. As you can see in the image below, the cabinetry now also extends all the way to the ceiling for a more customized and built-in look.

A flat-panel white kitchen cabinet remains the most classic of choices for all tastes and styles. Here in a historic property it looks right at home. This kitchen includes cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the Prairie Door and Shaker edge profile. The main kitchen cabinets are in the painted “White” finish by Koch. Because of other molding details in the home, a traditional crown molding profile was used where the cabinets meet the ceiling.

A custom wood hood is installed above the range and the addition of a mantle area/shelf allows for decor to be added.Just beyond the main cooking center wall is an area of the kitchen that has been transformed completely. So long alcove with open shelves…. and hello gorgeous new built-in hutch! This little corner of the kitchen may be our favorite part of the new design. A combination of glass doors and open shelves, all illuminated by our Diode LED lighting system.
Before and after from a Historic homes remodel. New hutch area installed as part of kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

This Diode system has been installed throughout the kitchen as undercabinet lighting. The same low-profile, low-voltage lighting is also installed in the glass-door and open shelf cabinets! We realize we sound like a broken record in every feature when we talk about this lighting but trust us it is a key player in why projects like these look so great! Including this lighting is such an important part of showcasing the investments you have made into your home.

Once installed, the lighting becomes the perfect task or ambient light. It uses very little energy and the look is great day or night. For instance, these images were taken during the day and the lighting STILL makes a big difference even with daylight coming in the windows. Another design detail that gives a historic look are the “clerestory” glass cabinet doors. The cabinets surrounding the hood have the top section cut for glass and become a great space for display without distracting from the hood itself.

Of course classic white subway tile is always a great material for any historic home. Another nod to the history of the home is the use of moldings and decorative detail. This kitchen is a very bright and clean look. The look can be achieved and still include details like supports or corbels. Not all of these details are heavy carved or scrolled wooden elements. In this case, a subtle style of mantle bracket was selected that complements the cabinet doorstyle.

A large single-level island is in the center of the kitchen and is now home to the kitchen sink and dishwasher. There is a curved overhang area for seating on the back side. Modern upgrades and updates should always be considered when remodeling. Ask yourself what suits your lifestyle and could make your enjoyment of the space even better? An upgrade as simple as this garbage disposal button may be something your become thankful for daily.
White painted kitchen with gray stained island. Historic home remodeled by Village Home Stores in Geneseo, IL. | VillageHomeStores.com

The low-profile of the button helps to keep it from being noticed unless you are really a user at the sink. The apron farmsink has found its way to be included in many styles of kitchen spaces within the past few years. Where it began it’s demand and influence is from projects just like this one. An old-world look inspired by large cast-iron farmsinks. We love the look of this Kohler Whitehaven sink.
Gray stained kitchen island on brick tiled floor. Love the look of two medium pendants above this island. | VillageHomeStores.com

The Vicksburg Door with Shaker edge is installed in a Rustic Hickory wood and “Driftwood” finish. This soft gray stain looks great and allows the Hickory grain to be highlighted. The lighting above the kitchen island also helps to keep the kitchen feeling open and bright. Two pendants hang above the island in a polished nickel finish.
Kichler pendant lighting in remodeled kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

These Kichler lights are perfect. The finish of the lights allow light to bounce off of them and the open frame style of the lights allow your eye to look right through them. Polished chrome and nickel finishes blend very well with Stainless elements. Using a brushed light fixture may have suggested a more modern style for the space. Stainless Steel appliances in a white painted kitchen. Sharp microwave drawer and KitchenAid pro gas range. | VillageHomeStores.com

Of course many upgrades were brought in by replacing the appliances with a brand new KitchenAid suite with Sharp microwave drawer. The 36″ wide dual-fuel commercial style range is stunning in appearance and top-notch in features. KitchenAid does a fantastic job of bringing professional-level features and benefits to you at a fraction of the price of other 36″ wide range options. Dual fuel gives you the precise control of a as cooktop with the consistent temperature control of an electric oven below.  Stainless Steel appliances in a white painted kitchen. Microwave drawers can really be the unsung heroes in spaces like this. Could you imagine this same wall of cabinetry with a microwave hood? Even a countertop microwave would distract from the finished look. Microwave drawers give a clean look and a functional upgrade. This 24″ wide flat-panel model blends really well with any Stainless Appliance suite. We managed this remodel from start to finish. Hazelwood Homes- Coal Valley, IL Kitchen With Family Friendly Farmhouse Style

We are so blessed to be able to become a part of the building process for our customers. Anything we can do to make that process more easy and of course exciting is such a great part of our work. This new home built in Coal Valley, IL by Hazelwood Homes is one of our favorite recently completely projects. This busy family wanted a stylish space but one that can be enjoyed and lived in as well.
White painted kitchen and nearby dining room in farmhouse style. New home in Coal Valley, IL built by Hazelwood Homes. | VillageHomeStores.com

An “open concept” layout is certainly the direction most new home plans are going. This home includes a great room that opens up into a dining space and then the kitchen. Now casual family moments and even more formal meals can all be shared within this family-friendly space. Having the kitchen within reach of the play areas and main social spaces of a home can be so helpful for families with younger children. Even though we are calling this kitchen “family friendly” we still believe it still could grace the cover of a glossy magazine don’t you?
White painted cabinets in a farmhouse style kitchen in the Quad Cities. Home built by Hazelwood Homes | VillageHomeStores.com

Flat-panel, “Ridgegate” cabinets in a “White” paint are a classic choice from our Koch line. Modern Farmhouse details like Hickory hand-scraped wood floors and a farm sink help to nudge this Transitional style kitchen into the Farmhouse Transitional style category. Wall cabinets stretch just shy of the ceilings leaving enough room for a stacked crown molding detail. So much storage throughout plus a glass-door corner pantry area (shown below with someone sneaking a snack).

“Fossil Grey” quartz counters mimic an almost cement slab look on the perimeter of the kitchen and Cambria® Quartz “Brittanicca” graces the center of the kitchen on the island. This beautiful look of natural stone suggests marble with the no-maintenance appeal of Cambria®! This non-porous, durable product is a fantastic choice for counters in this busy family hub!

With the wall cabinets so tall, a stacked look to the doors was desired to avoid long, exaggerated doors to open and close. Many kitchens with this look include floating shelves. The look can be great, but difficult to keep clean. You also become limited to weight the floating shelves may hold. Consider glass-front cabinets as an option to still give an open look. One section of this kitchen design has been arranged as a built-in hutch area (see above).
Kitchen in Coal Valley, IL with glass door cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.com

The main kitchen perimeter includes just glass inserts in the top section for a “clerestory” effect. This hutch area section includes glass door inserts entirely. The finished look is clean and stylish. We love how the dishes and glassware are able to be displayed but kept from dust. The kitchen backsplash adds to the white-on-white space a new texture and design detail. An “Arabesque” shape tile in a glossy “Coronado” color  helps add curvy intertwining lines to soften the look of the kitchen. Of course we can never mention a stunning backsplash without also reminding you it is being washed with light by our Diode undercabinet lighting system. There is no better way to showcase your new kitchen investments than with this low-voltage lighting.

The refrigerator for this kitchen is located right at the entrance from the Dining area. A KitchenAid® 20 cu. ft. counter-depth model has a deep cabinet above and a refrigerator end panel on the right side of the unit for a built in look. A “family-friendly” kitchen without water in the door?!? Well, this French Door unit may be shallower to allow maximum walkway throughout the kitchen…but it does still have water and ice!
french-door-refrigerator

The filtered water is just inside of the door and an icemaker is located down in the freezer drawer. Including the icemaker and ice storage down below frees up more space in the fresh food storage area that can become quickly crowded in a counter-depth model. Cooking and baking just got a lot more stylish and easier for this family as well!

We love the lighting that was selected throughout this entire home. The kitchen lighting is so perfectly paired with the style of the space. It keeps the space feeling light and bright and doesn’t distract from the other focal areas of the kitchen. Above the farmhouse style kitchen sink is a white and chrome pendant light by Golden Lighting.

We love how the clear glass keeps the space feeling bright and open. The kitchen island includes a microwave drawer from Sharp®. This microwave option is wonderful for busy families. Easy to reach and plenty of counter space above it, microwave drawers can be a wonderful option for your kitchen design. The microwave controls for this unit can be found on the tilt-out panel on the top frame of the unit. Bettendorf, IA- Once Upon a Time… Beige Met Gray…

A Classic tale of Gray meets Beige… Ok fine this might not seem like a classic tale but trust us, warm gray tones are everywhere in the home finishes industries. Say goodbye to Beige everywhere and say hello to the new neutral: Gray. Not always bland and cold as stone, Gray tones can be warm and inviting. Someplace between Gray and Beige is… “Greige“! This Bettendorf, IA kitchen showcases the perfect palette for this neutral color concept.
Kitchen remodeled in Bettendorf, IA | VillageHomeStores.com

The original kitchen in this home was a medium stained Oak cabinet with neutral toned countertops. Once ready for an update and a brighter look, this Bettendorf home is now a magazine-cover worthy space. Take a look at the transformation.
before

Painted white cabinetry from our Koch Classic line has been given a “Smoke” highlight accent and a wood hood and kitchen island is painted in the “Fog” finish. The “Legacy” doorstyle is a fantastic choice that provides many edges and details that the “Smoke” highlight can catch up on. A decorative wood hood in the accent color is fit with a Broan hood insert within it.
Gray and white kitchen remodel in Bettendorf, IA | VillageHomeStores.com

That same “Fog” painted finish from the hood is found on the kitchen island that includes an overhang and seating for two at counter-height. While you may think next to the kitchen sink is the best location for your pull-out waste basket cabinet, an island can be a better choice. Include this cabinet within reach of the sink user but easy to access for guests when entertaining. A waste basket cabinet in the island can be easy to find and keep the sink area from getting too crowded.
Koch's Fog painted finish. | VillageHomeStores.com

We have to admit that sometimes one element of a complete design stands out as the “MVP”. In this kitchen it is absolutely the tile backsplash! This geometric mosaic tile by Glazzio is from the “Excalibur Series” in the “Winter Fjord” color. It perfectly blends both cabinet finishes, the countertop selection, and the flooring together. Our Diode L.E.D. undercabinet lighting system showcases this tile perfectly and the look is amazing day or night.

Whirlpool front control range. | VillageHomeStores.comBelow the painted hood and that amazing tile backsplash sits Whirlpool’s front-control gas range with True Convection features in Stainless Steel. One of our favorite features on this model aside from the convection is the Frozen Bake™ option. Select this feature to cook frozen foods faster by eliminating the need to preheat the oven. Just select the food type, temperature, and cook time listed on the frozen item’s package and the oven will start customizing. Now you can cook frozen pizza 31% faster, and even lasagna, chicken nuggets, fries and pies can get from the oven to the table in less time. No more preheating before your get started. The preheat process is included in the bake time. Tall storage cabinetry in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comYou will find plenty of pantry storage on the refrigerator wall of the new kitchen design. Two tall pantry cabinets surround the refrigerator area and varied depths have been used to utilize the space as much as possible. Notice the change in depths in this profile view below of the pantry wall:sliding shelves in pantry. | VillageHomeStores.com

Plenty of pantry storage plus two slide-out bins in the end base cabinet. Also note the exposed ends of the cabinetry in this kitchen. In place of a smooth, painted finished end matching cabinet doors have been applied for a gorgeous finished look. Including “Applied Door Ends” is an exceptionally nice detail in a kitchen with a mitered and glazed doorstyle like this.  Not to go un-noticed is a gorgeous farmhouse sink in this kitchen. A design selection that is a statement all in itself, this Whitehaus smooth-front apron sink is an instantly classic look. Farm sink in Bettendorf, IA kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The farm sink has been undermounted to Cambria’s “Torquay” quartz counters in the standard “Eased” edge profile. This Cambria design adds a perfectly polished and upscale look without overpowering the backsplash tile with too much pattern. This entire design is about balance. Balancing accent colors, pattern, texture, even hardware sizes. Having a designer with you during every decision for your project helps you get the end result you have been dreaming of. Vinyl flooring Bettendorf, IA. | VillageHomeStores.com

All of these selections sit on top of a luxury vinyl tile by Armstrong. This 12″ x 24″ LVT is from the “Alterna” series in the “Silver Shimmer” color. Moline, IL- The Best Remodels Are The Ones You Never Knew Happened

The best remodels are the ones you never knew happened? What on Earth do we mean by this?!? Simply that a kitchen (or any well-designed space) should look naturally “at home” in your home. The fact that it has been remodeled recently shouldn’t necessarily be a dead giveaway.  If that is apparent, you run the risk of it looking “dated” within 5 years or so. This is especially true for historic homes. Making classic choices in materials and application that enhance and compliment your home are always the right choices. A great example of this is a kitchen remodel we recently completed in Moline, IL. This new kitchen looks perfectly at home in the space yet updated with modern touches at the same time. We will confidently be able to say the same thing years down the road. Remodeled Moline, IL kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A cabinet design using our Koch Classic line is installed in the “Prairie” doorstyle in a painted “White” finish. A single slab-style drawer front has been selected for the drawers. Floating shelves in an Oak wood stained in a “Mocha” finish accent the sink wall.  Neutral gray tone-on tone Engineered Quartz counters break up the space and a dark hardwood floor adds drama to the completed look. farmhouse kitchen ideas | VillageHomeStores.com

beforeThe original kitchen was in this same area of the back of the home. For storage however, only a single wall of cabinetry surrounding the sink was installed. This left an empty wall for the range to rest on and a refrigerator to float on another. Not ideal for a busy family. Also take into consideration ther is no dishwasher in the original layout. put a drying rack on that countertop and now there is even less space available. The new layout converts this single-wall design into an L-shape and adds storage in every inch possible. Added storage and plenty of added counter space that is so important surrounding the cooking center of the new kitchen. With the range wall now included in the cabinetry layout, the sink wall can have a more open look. Instead of a solid block of built-in cabinetry, there are glass-front cabinets and contrasting floating shelves.  The same dark wood finish from the floors is repeated in the oak floating shelves installed to the left of the sink. These floating shelves add a modern detail to the New-Traditional styled space. Painted white kitchen ideas. | VillageHomeStores.comFloating shelves in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comThese floating shelves are balanced by the classic glass-front cabinet doors on the opposite side of the sink. The best result from this new cabinet design on the sink wall is how open and uncrowded the user at the sink now feels. Natural light pours in from the window above the sink as well as the others on the back wall of the home. An always classic choice in a kitchen design like this is the use of an apron-front or “farmhouse” sink. This single decision can make such a huge impact of the finished look of the kitchen. This 26″ wide single-well apron sink has been under-mounted to Engineered Quartz counters in the “Fossil Gray” color. A standard “Eased” edge is another classic choice for the project.  A heavy and ornate “Ogee” edge would seem out of place here.

farm_sinkAnother classic choice is the application of an apron sink. It is almost impossible to imagine this kitchen without an apron-front sink. Of course the most effortlessly classic pairing with an apron-front sink is subway tile. This kitchen takes that concept and steps it up a bit with an incredible material detail: an elongated size. Long Subway Tile backsplash in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

While a classic subway tile may measure 3″ x 6″, these elongated tiles from our American Olean line are 2″ x 8″. The series is named “Urban Canvas” and the color is “Ice White”. This exaggerates the classic look of subway tile and makes a huge impact with the detail. The use of simple and clean lines in the details of your overall design can help spotlight other key areas.  A subtle gray quartz top doesn’t distract from the overall look. By selecting a complimenting gray grout to the quartz counters it helps to showcases the tile shape. dishwasher_with_third_rack

The kitchen appliances selected for this Moline home bring modern conveniences and a high-end look to the space. KitchenAid’s new look gets you professional-level results and appearance.  The new kitchen layout now includes a space for this Stainless Steel dishwasher. A third rack on the interior of this dishwasher makes it easy to clean hard-to-place items such as spatulas, serving utensils and measuring cups, freeing up space in the lower two racks. Speaking of space, the range in this kitchen has a lot of it and it is just a 30″ range! This 30″ Gas convection Slide-In Range  has a great look and a lot of fantastic features including a baking drawer.
Warming drawer | VillageHomeStores.com

Yes you read that correctly. This isn’t just a warming drawer, it is a baking drawer! This range comes armed with the easy to use drawer that allows you to keep warm, slow cook or bake at a different temperature from the oven plus the ability to keep dishes warm. The ability to bake at two temperatures and a total oven capacity of 6.5 cu. ft. This range is ready for your largest of dinner parties. kitchen_painted_white

cooktopThis gas unit from KitchenAid measures 30″ in width and fits any current opening that a freestanding range may leave. The cooktop on the unit boasts a 5-burner layout. 5 burners with a wide range of cooking power from 5,000 to 19,000 BTU’s. Everything from a rolling boil to a delicate simmer is covered. The continuous grates make it easy to slide from burner to burner if needed.

Feature Kitchen: Weather or Not?

weathered_cabinetsPrefer the smooth look of a painted kitchen cabinet? Or is a rustic weathered look more your taste? How about a perfect blend of each!? Our newest display kitchen in the Village Home Stores showroom is today’s featured kitchen! This kitchen was our booth display for this Winter’s Quad Cities Builders and Remodelers Association Home Show. It was a huge success making impressions at the show and has already become our new favorite now that it is at home here in Geneseo.

Village_Home_StoresAnytime a single kitchen display can showcase two styles and finishes of cabinetry it helps us and our customers out when shopping in the showroom. This combination of finishes looks so incredible as a big picture project we know we will be installing many similar to it all over the area. We posted last week how the trend of using gray finishes in the kitchen is showing that it has some real staying power. With many years ahead and more and more options launching very week, gray is the perfect choice for an island accent like this display features. We mixed both color and texture in this case:oysterwithsmoke

The island perimeter cabinetry for this kitchen is from our Koch Cabinetry line. The smooth painted “Oyster” finish has been accented with a “Smoke” glaze. This gray accent is perfect when paired with the backsplash, stainless appliances and the island from Dura Supreme. The island cabinetry is a rustic “Weathered E” Cherry finish. Dura Supreme has gone above and beyond to bring our customers amazing options with their Weathered Heirloom, and Heritage Painted series of cabinetry.

weathered_kitchen_islandIslands make the perfect place for a more textured look and finish, With many of our customers wanting a furniture-style design (like this display includes). An island is a perfect pop of color and while the idea may seem bold, the result seems right at home once the whole project is in place. We also selected two styles of hardware to compliment the cabinet choices for this display:

cabinet_hardware_quad_citiesThis weathered cherry island is something you truly need to see and feel in person. At the home show no invitation is needed to walk up and touch it. We watched people at the show walk from all the way down the aisle and right up to it to touch and see what the wood was.  The same thing kept happening with this display’s backsplash.Village_Geneseoflooring_on_wallIf it wasn’t the island cabinetry and top, the other most asked (and touched) part of this display was the wood “fake-out” tiles on the wall. These tiles give a look and texture that ties in perfectly as a compliment to the island finish. This material is actually a porcelain floor tile that has been installed as a backsplash. The tile is from our Paramount line in the Sandal Wood “Ocean Breeze” design. With the Diode undercabinet lighting system installed, the wood-look tile steals your attention right away! The KitchenAid® chimney-style hood becomes the focal point of the wall. Our most popular 30″ gas cooktop from KitchenAid® has a total of 5 burners below.

An apron-front farm sink doesn’t have to look “Traditional”. With the right setting it can have a more modern style. This Stainless Steel farm sink is a great example of just that. A white cast-iron sink would be to bold of a contrast in color and keep the island from having that solid, furniture look that we get with the look in our display.

stainless_farm_sinkNot only are the cabinets in this kitchen different but the countertops are as well. In this kitchen we paired Arabesque White with Natural Soapstone. We had so many questions about the soapstone top that we will be sharing a full product profile post on soapstone on the blog next week.arabesque white

island_lighting_quad_citiesWith an island this incredible and a focal wall like the one we have here, a subtle light fixture was the right choice for this kitchen. This kitchen design could warrant the use of so many types and styles of island lighting. Your possibilities are truly endless. This transitional style fixture from Kichler compliments the metal finishes from this kitchen as well as the length and shape of of the island. Two large pendants would also work well here and frame in the centered sink and hood on the wall behind the island.

While we love showing you our newest display kitchen in a tour here on the blog, you really need to stop by and see (and feel) it in person! The weathered cherry and soapstone in this island are stunning in person. Call or click today for an appointment to get started on your project!cabinets_Geneseo (1)
