We all know that the bar top is where everyone is going to congregate when you have people over. This unique home bar design takes that knowledge to the next level and creates the perfect top to do just that! The countertop gives the illusion of almost floating between supporting bases.

How can an engineered quartz top this thick look so airy and lightweight? The short answer: teamwork. This customer found a suspended bar design online that they loved the look of. They shared that photo with their designer from Village Home Stores and we went to work with the “Fossil Grey” quartz fabricators. Our team came up with a safe, functional bracket design and install that would give them the look they wanted with the piece of mind needed for this family room area.

Now the bar area can be accessed from either side of the top and TVs can be placed above the bar sink AND across the room in the other direction if needed. This extra thick looking top is actually another design illusion. The look is achieved by fabricating the edges of the top with a “laminated” edge. This means that just the edges of the top have this thickness. If you were to reach underneath a few inches you will feel the reveal of the true thickness of the slab. We included a magazine in the image below to help showcase the scale of the top thickness.

Of course no great bar design is complete without stylish lighting. Three pendants lights from our Kichler line illuminate the bar top. They have been installed on the opposite side of the needed header above. The look is customized and stylish. Recess can lighting on the other side of the header help to light the back bar area.

An on-trend wood-look tile has been installed as the bar flooring AND the backsplash. This Florim tile is from the Charleston series in the “Timber” color. The variety of the colors in this collection allow for so many decor options. There are plenty of real barnwood materials available for your space but consider a surface like this tile. Now the floors and the backsplash are a perfect match plus an easy-to-clean surface.

Of course having a bar sink in this lower level will save these clients many trips up and down the stairs while entertaining. The cabinetry in this bar area is from our Koch Classic line. The door is named “Ridgegate” and the finish is a Birch wood with a “Java” stain. See the beautiful painted white kitchen upstairs in this home here in a previous feature post.

Cordova, IL- Rustic Transitional Kitchen Remodel

This Cordova, IL kitchen is a sophisticated approach to the Rustic Transitional style. Rustic Beech cabinetry from our Koch line includes knots and other rustic features and a rich “Chestnut” stain dresses up the space. Solid gray quartz countertops and Stainless Steel appliances complete the look…. and that look is breathtakingly gorgeous! hidden_drawer_cabinet (1)

The “Vicksburg” doorstyle selected is a full-overlay style. This means that the doors and drawer fronts span as far across the cabinet face frames as possible leaving little gap between each cabinet. A great example of this seamless full-overlay style is the pantry area that surrounds the new double drawer refrigerator.

Staggered heights and depths were used to add interest to the large L-shaped layout of wall cabinetry. There are many excellent cabinet storage solutions in this kitchen design. The image below showcases the “X” shaped wine cubbies included. Wine storage and display in the perfect location at the end of the kitchen. The cubbies cap off the wall cabinetry and when entertaining, this leg of the design is perfect to set up as the beverage center.

Many of the specialty storage cabinets are hidden from first glance. You don’t need a pull-out cabinet or borrow space in your pantry cabinet for spices, spice racks can be added to your wall cabinetry. Click the thumbnail below to watch this wall cabinet open up to reveal spice racks installed on the interior of each door.

Of course the best way to optimized the corner of your kitchen is to include a lazy susan cabinet. This kitchen has an all wood susan cabinet in an angled front layout. Replacing the L-shaped susan cabinet with space for a full radius of shelf to turn within.  This is an alternative to the traditional susan shelves that form a “Pac Man” shaped shelf. The same angled front door is repeated in the wall cabinetry above.

You also gain added counter space in the corner when using the angled front style of corner cabinet. Ans speaking of counter space, there is plenty with the new dual-height island design. The built-in cooking center is on the interior side facing the kitchen sink. Tall cabinets form the bar-height side of the island. A overhang on the tops stretches in toward the great room and provide seating for 4 guests.

Instead of simply adding a panel that looks like finished cabinet doors, why not make them real doors? At 12″ deep, these full-height door cabinets give a polished look to the back of the island plus add a lot of storage. Extra dishes, bulk items, small appliances, even board games and remotes can all be stored here out of sight but right within reach.

Storage is great but many will also appreciate the construction of these Koch Cabinets. This Cordova, IL kitchen has been ordered from Koch’s Imperial Series of construction. This plywood construction series includes upgraded materials as well as upgraded assembly processes that add to the integrity and longevity of your investment. Koch Imperial Series Cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.comAll of these upgrades plus option to upgrade your drawer box construction and guides as well as your door hinges to a soft-close option. The 1/2″ plywood sides may also be ordered with applied 1/4″ veneered skins for finished ends. Talk with your designer at Village Home Stores about the cabinet construction upgrades that are available for you and your project. This customer upgraded to full-extension, soft-close drawer guides and soft-close hinges on the doors. A clean built-in look was achieved in the island by including a wall oven with cooktop installed above in place of a slide-in or freestanding unit. This can be done with a gas, electric or induction cooktop. The appliance package selected for this remodel is from the Whirlpool line available at Village Home Stores.

Surrounding the built-in oven are two tray divider cabinets. To the left of the new oven and tray divider cabinets is a large stack of drawers. This unit looks like a two drawer cabinet but behind the top drawer is a hidden third drawer perfect for utensils, lids, or potholders. Two sections of wall surrounding the fireplace now have built-in cabinetry that matches the style and finish of the kitchen. Wood countertops in the same “Chestnut” stain help give the units a custom look but set them apart from the kitchen while keeping everything coordinated.  Another detail is the addition of textured water glass inserts inside of the cabinet doors. The freedom to display items within without the exposed shelves to gather dust.

Bettendorf, IA: Rustic Beech Lower Level Wet Bar

Home is not just where your hang your own hat. Your home is a place for entertaining guests. Don’t miss out on opportunities to make an impression on those guests in the areas you know they will visit. When you entertain large groups, two areas are always guaranteed a visit: the bar and the guest bathrooms. We wanted to show you around a wet bar located in the lower level of a Bettendorf, IA home built by Kerkhoff Homes. This wet bar is a great example of how just a few basic design details can step up a space to become functional AND memorable.wet bar cabinets in a lower level of a Bettendorf, IA home. | VillageHomeStores.com

Sometimes the last spaces designed in your home can become the most visited once they are complete. Building a new home or taking on an extensive remodel can leave you exhausted when it comes to making decisions. By the time you are finished making selections for the kitchen and main bathrooms you can easily run out of opinions. Your expert team at Village Home Stores is here to make sure every space in your project has that designer touch.  A great wet bar design doesn’t have to break your budget or strain your decision-making patience. Give your space just a few distinct features and then sit back and enjoy it! rustic_beech_bar

The easiest way to complete the look of any wet bar is to include matching wood paneling. This gives the bar a more solid look. Imagine if the wall underneath the wooden bar top was just painted the same color as the walls. This same bar would look half the size. Including wood panels in this design helps to anchor the outside of the built-in bar space and makes a firms statement that there is not just a back bar but as front bar as well. This paneled look was acheived with a smooth panel, finished flat stock pieces, and furniture base molding.bar back panel and trim. | VillageHomeStores.com

recessed refrigerator in barThe wet bar includes a refrigerator recessed into the joining wall of the U-shaped space. Creating a customized recessed area here allows for a standard-depth refrigerator model to be selected. A customized look is achieved using standard materials. Counter-depth refrigerator models do typically cost more than standard models. The difference in storage space within is just as important to note. This same space could accommodate a counter depth model with just 20 cu. ft. of storage. Instead, a standard Whirlpool side by side with 25 cu. ft. of storage rests in its designated area. Recessing the refrigerator also helped the back bar get a great look.

A more symmetrical layout was achieved by centering a sink base on the back wall and framing in the space with two glass-front wall cabinets. A mosaic tile has been installed below the wall cabinetry and spreads into the center section. In place of a valance or a center cabinet, the crown molding stretches across the top from wall to wall. This gives the perfect way to “cap” off the tile. Deciding how or where to end a backsplash tile installation can often be difficult above sinks. There are commonly unique cabinets or a windows above the sink and that can create odd exposed areas of wall. We love the look of this filled in space. This area is now perfect for hanging a large wall clock, mirror, or framed artwork.crown molding caps off tile backsplash. | VillageHomeStores.com

The base cabinetry of the back bar includes a space for a microwave drawer and pull-out trash bin. The cabinets used in this wet bar design are a Rustic Beech wood finished in a “Mocha” stain from our Koch Classic line. Rustic Beech is an economically priced wood species and takes stain similar to a Birch wood. The rustic features (like knots) add character and detail to the space. The rich “Mocha” stain paired with Oil-Rubbed Bronze hardware and faucet help make this “rustic” wood look high-end and dramatic. bar cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.com

glass_cabinetThe wall cabinets on each end of the back bar have been ordered with the center panel cut for glass. A textured glass has been custom fit and sealed into place to allow the cabinets to become display areas. Textured glass is a great selection for this type of display cabinet. It allows you to see that items are being stored within but it can be difficult to make out what the items are. That way if you have a stack of paper plates behind the glass, it looks no different than if it were a vase or a bowl. A detail that looks great but can be forgiving in a multi-purpose space like a wet bar.

Because of their location, many times wet bars are home to a lot of “overflow” bulk items or seasonal items. Use this opportunity to include as much storage as possible. The important thing is to have a great space to join your guests when entertaining. The bar top itself should be large and well lit. bar pendant lighting. | VillageHomeStores.com

Our lighting expert selected these three “Kent” pendant lights by Artcraft Lighting to hang above the bar top area. The Oil-Rubbed Bronze finish paired perfectly with the other selections. The light that comes from these pendants isn’t just impressive on the bar top. Take a look at the display of light that the “hammered” glass casts on the ceiling above. Selecting the right lighting for a wet bar design can truly set the tone for the entire space. wet bar in lower level of Bettendorf, IA home. | VillageHomeStores.com

The pendants are the perfect size and scale. The added textured detail to the glass gives a playful showcase of light. Details like these help take a basic space and make it breathtaking.
