Moline, IL- Clear The Table From Your Family Clutter

It is no news that we believe the kitchen is the “hub” of the home. For many busy families that translates to the “hub” of all clutter! Bookbags, luchboxes, mail, schoolwork, the dog leash, the sports equipment… you see where we are headed with this. This Moline family of 5 (plus pets) was ready  for a kitchen remodel. When their designer asked what they really wanted to see with a new layout, their response was this: some way to keep the kitchen table clear. Before we share that solution, let’s start the tour with the familiar kitchen areas. This L-shape sink section includes a very common and functional layout. A range and microwave hood on one end, turn the corner with a base lazy susan cabinet to a sink beneath a window and dishwasher beside it.

The original kitchen layout included a peninsula on this wall extending into the kitchen. The new layout opens up the space by eliminating that peninsula and making room for a large kitchen table. Koch cabinetry in the Seneca doorstyle is installed in a Birch wood and “Mocha” stain. Glass 3″ x 6″ subway-style tiles have been installed in a herringbone design for the kitchen backsplash.A Moline, IL kitchen remodel including Hanstone Quartz and glass subway tile. | VillageHomeStores.com

The tile is from our American Olean line in the Color Appeal series and “Plaza Taupe” color. No backsplash was installed with these tops so the glass tile backsplash had more room for a statement with the pattern. The refrigerator wall now includes so much amazing storage!

A tall pantry cabinet fit with sliding shelves and a refrigerator end panel surround the refrigerator for a great look. The section of cabinetry on this same wall creates a great work surface that also serves as a coffee station. The wall cabinetry above is staggered in height and depth to add interest to this wall. Soffits have been removed from this kitchen so that the new cabinetry can reach to the ceiling. To compliment the deeper center cabinet above, the large stack of drawers in the base cabinetry is pulled forward. A Moline, IL kitchen remodel including Hanstone Quartz in the Victorian Sands design. | VillageHomeStores.com

This gives the opportunity to add interest and a furniture-style look with an arched toespace on the drawer cabinet. The Quartz kitchen counters mimic the creative shape of these cabinets and follow the in-out-in detail with soft radius corners on this bump-out area.A Moline, IL kitchen remodel including Hanstone Quartz in the Victorian Sands design. | VillageHomeStores.com

Hanstone Quartz countertops in the Victorian Sands color are a stunning choice for this Moline, IL home. Victorian Sands is a wonderful blend of neutral colors. It is one of those successful colors over the years in that it works with so many wood tones and pairs with just about any tile or paint selections. A standard “Eased” edge profile  is a classic choice. But what about that whole new area designed to somehow solve the clutter table issue? With the mission to control family clutter in mind, our designer went to work to create a new kitchen layout including a whole new third section of cabinetry across from the original kitchen.

What an amazing brand new custom drop-zone area fit with a bench seat and coathooks! A place for everything and everything in its place…and guess what?! The kitchen table (and even the kitchen countertops) are now all clear! By creating this designated “drop zone” area on the back wall of the kitchen, there is no excuse for anything to end up on the table at all. A bench seat built from functioning drawers is capped with a matching wood top. This offers a stylish surface for seating. Designing the drop zone into 4 sections helps to contain the clutter to each child’s area. Drop zones like this work best when located near the main entrance home for the users (i.e. back garage door entry).

Geneseo Remodel: Kitchen Turns a New Corner

remodel_geneseoThis featured kitchen remodel in Geneseo, IL gives a new layout that includes designated zones to help keep clutter to a minimum for this busy household.
Geneseo kitchen remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores

Any busy household could use some help when it comes to the subject of clutter control. “A place for everything and everything in its place”. That’s a great concept to embroider on a pillow but even with a brand new kitchen, let’s be realistic. Take a look at this design solution. A large-item drop zone area. This is easily our most favorite part of the new design.
Kitchen drop zone from Village Home Stores.hook

Kitchens tend to be located by the entrance used most by residents of the home. Where do you throw all your stuff when you walk in the door? Including a drop zone area in your kitchen design can help to give your items a built-in place to rest. This design includes a cabinet above, two coat rack cubbies with hooks, and storage drawers below. The drawers below become the perfect location for this family to store petfood and supplies.

A matching beadboard panel has been installed to the back of this bench drop zone area. The ridges of the Birch beadboard help dress up the look of the coat cubbies when nothing is stored there. Hanging two-sided coat hooks from the bottom of the cabinet area above gives bulky items more space to hang. Have you ever heard a friend or family member complain they didn’t have enough drawers in their kitchen? Well imagine how jealous they would be of this corner of our featured remodel.

This new kitchen design “wraps” the corner as it transitions into the drop zone area. The stack of drawers found right at the “turn” of the corner adds even more storage for non-kitchen essentials. Because this drop zone area is located right at the center “hub” of the home, any number of items can be stored here that might be needed. Take a look at a “Before” photo from this Geneseo kitchen just to see how much it has changed:before

Dated cabinetry, hardware and tops have been completely upgraded for a stunning new look. Rich “Mocha” stained Birch cabinetry has been installed in the “Savannah” Shaker doorstyle from our Koch Classic line. If you love the look of this Cherry look on a more affordable wood species, be sure to check out this other featured kitchen on the blog. crown_molding

The refrigerator in the new design has been moved to the sink wall. A small landing space of countertop has been included to the left of the Stainless Steel Whirlpool refrigerator. Hidden within the cabinet is a charging station. Including specified zones for devices is another way to keep kitchen counter clutter under control. Whirlpool refrigerator WRF736SDAM13 | VillageHomeStores.comdepthThe new refrigerator has been surrounded with matching Birch end panels. It is important to note that even though the design has “built-in” the new refrigerator, it still extends out into the space. Be sure to discuss counter-depth vs. standard-depth refrigerator models choices with your kitchen designer and appliance salesperson at Village Home Stores. This layout does not demand the clearance or look of a counter-depth model. Because of that, a full-depth model that offers 25 cu. ft. of storage can be used for this new Geneseo kitchen. Counter-depth refrigerator models can look great and be a space-saving option but don;t forget you do lose capacity when compared to a standard-depth model.pantry

Directly across from the new refrigerator is a tall pantry cabinet. This cabinet has been fitted with adjustable slide-out shelves. In place of cabinets with slide-outs surrounding the range, two large drawer stacks have been included. Now all baking items, pots and pans, and lids are within reach of the cooking zone of the kitchen. full viewCambria WinchesterThe new hardwood flooring in this featured kitchen is beautiful. A Hickory wood from Hallmark’s “Chaparral Collection” has been stained in the “Sagebrush” finish. Other materials from this featured remodel include Cambria’s “Winchester” design quartz tops and a mosaic tile accent strip that truly ties everything together. Working with Village Home Stores gives you the piece of mind that your kitchen will look great. Bettendorf Remodel- Modern Meets Marvelous

bettendorf_remodelThis Bettendorf, IA kitchen remodel is a great story to feature because we are sure many of you readers can relate to it. How many times have you started a project with your partner and your tastes just aren’t matching up? Could be as simple as deciding what movie to watch…could be as complex as selecting the look for your new kitchen.Gray kitchen island with dark cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.com

This is such a common challenge with many of our clients. If you know anyone that has gone through the remodel process or built a home you know that it can be difficult to make all of the selections for the project. We would like to give a huge round of applause to this fun Bettendorf couple for including their designer from Village Home Stores in on the process and letting this kitchen become the result of a shared vision.bettendorf_kitchen_IG

The final result of this collaboration of styles and selections is remarkable. His and Hers tastes collide in a great finished look. “His” tastes are more modern, sleek and contained while “Her” tastes are more classical lines and styles. Taking this information into consideration was important for their Kitchen Designer during the layout and selection process.gray kitchen island. | VillageHomeStores.com

This L-shaped kitchen layout with a single-level island includes Stainless steel appliances and a two-toned finish choice for the cabinetry.  Plenty of space for multiple users to work within this new design and seating at the kitchen island as well as a nearby dining table. Kitchen design Bettendorf, IA. | VillageHomeStores.com

New hardwood floors were installed throughout this entire new area and walls were removed to open up this main level into one large space. While Village Home Stores does have a full Project Management program available to our customers, we realize many of you may want to do some parts of the work yourself. In this case we were able to provide a reliable and expert carpentry crew to install the new kitchen and all of the rest of the project was handled by the customer. The work done at the home was extensive. One of the biggest layout changes was moving a staircase from the front entry (shown on right) to a new location in the living room area (shown on left). moving stairs

Just like any blend of tastes, you have to leave room for both sides of the story to be told. Some areas allow more easier direction than others. For instance, your backsplash tile can really be what “tips the scale” from Traditional to Modern because it is really an expressive material to work with. Your backsplash choice makes such a huge impact on the overall finished look. beveled_tile

Instead of a mosaic of materials or introducing a new element to the backsplash, a classic and timeless look was decided: white subway tile. This look is so versatile for many styles and it fits right at home here. For a more Modern edge to this classic look, a beveled tile was used. The bevel on the tiles create a shadow and add interest and texture to the layer of material. Cambria Quartz Torquay. | VillageHomeStores.com

Below that beveled subway tile sits a Cambria quartz countertop in the “Torquay” design. This subtle quartz choice is durable and here it gives the perfect sophisticated look.  The same “Torquay” quartz is installed on the kitchen island as well. Our kitchen designer at Village Home Stores included base and wall cabinets on the end of the run of cabinetry that are typically installed in a corner application. the result: more surface area on the countertop below!Kate Spade bowl. | VillageHomeStores.com

Far away from the cooktop and the kitchen island, this area can act as another large prep or service area in the new kitchen. The perimeter kitchen cabinetry is from our Koch Classic line. Many times the term “flat-panel” gets categorized as a “simple” doorstyle. Simple is not a bad thing. Simple has staying-power! Truth is, a flat center panel framed with clean rails and stiles remains the most popular choice throughout all regions of design because it is simple. Flat-panel doors have been the top choice for many many years and that will not change. kitchen remodel Bettendorf, IA. | VillageHomeStores.com

Koch’s “Aspen” doorstyle was the perfect choice for this project! Wide rails on the top and bottom lend more to the Modern look but the overall picture is classic. The two cabinets flanking the Stainless Steel hood have an added detail that helps give the range wall even more interest. These 30″ tall wall cabinets were ordered with the doors configured in what is called a “70/30 Split” door layout. Note the smaller section on the top of the door. This top section is a fun area to add glass to a cabinet door without exposing the entire contents on display.Kitchen cabinetry Bettendorf, IA. | VillageHomeStores.com

The same “Aspen” doorstyle was used on the cabinetry for the island. An end and back panel treatment that compliments this design was installed surrounding it. Including a microwave hood would have meant that the Stainless chimney hood would not be the main focal point of the range wall. Instead a drawer unit was installed into the island. Islands can be a great location for a built-in microwave option. island_front

The kitchen island was another opportunity to express a more current trend with a timeless look. A white painted kitchen island would have look great here by why not go gray? Introducing Koch’s new “Fog” painted finish:painted gray island. | VillageHomeStores.com

This gray option opens up a whole new doorway into neutrals that blend well with medium to dark woods. Ask to see the “Fog” finish in person when you visit our showroom. The homeowner was even able to repurpose an antique sideboard cabinet for a nearby wall and find a similar paint to cover it with. This helped carry the “Fog” color into the entire room. Kitchen countertops. | VillageHomeStores.com

Modern kitchen finishes. | VillageHomeStores.comThe kitchen sink is sometimes the final thought when designing a kitchen. Don’t forget that your countertop and sink are two of the most used parts of your investment. Cambria quartz countertops allow for an undermounted sink application. This means that clean up is a breeze. Not only will nothing harm or absorb into the Cambria tops, but a single wipe or swipe can land right into the bowl. No lip or ridge to keep you from sink access. We are so glad to have work with this Bettendorf couple on the design and installation of their new kitchen.modern kitchen with painted island | VillageHomeStores.com
