Wall Removal and a Peek At Our Kitchen Remodel Process

Village Home Stores East Moline Quad Cities remodel

This kitchen in East Moline, IL has a whole new look and layout. We removed a dividing wall to make room for more natural light and an island design with counter-height seating. Warm, Rustic Beech Koch Cabinetry in the Seneca door and Briarwood stain has been accented with a Black glaze. The mixed metals of copper, Oil-Rubbed Bronze and Black Stainless look amazing. Plus check out the bright statement with that island accent lighting (more on that later)! We absolutely love how this kitchen turned out.

The original kitchen was very nice, but the layout of the cabinetry was awkward and secluded from the front room. This made it a great candidate for a wall removal remodel. Not every kitchen we remodel needs a wall removed to be incredible. In this home however, having the entire space open now seems like that is what the layout should have been all along. In this kitchen we removed a wall and soffit during the remodel process to achieve that open concept. Take a look at the original soffits and dividing wall between the living room and kitchen shown in the before photo below.

What is The Village Process Like?

If you are looking to remodel your kitchen anytime soon you are in the right place! This blog can be such a useful place to find inspiration and help qualify your own likes and dislikes. We hope that Village Home Stores can be a part of your research process AND your remodel process. Are you just seeking products and ideas and to do the remodel work yourself? That’s great! Village Home Stores can provide you with an expertly prepared design and quality materials for you to DIY to your hearts content. But if you don’t have the time or skill to do that, our start-to-finish Project Management process may be the perfect fit for your timeline and your budget. What do we mean when we say our remodel customers can have us manage their job from “start-to-finish” ? It means that from the very first time you message us online or stop by, we are working for you and with you to get you into your finished space. No matter who is doing the remodel work, your first step is the same: just reach out to our team to schedule a Complementary Consultation.

Before and after photos of an East Moline Quad Cities kitchen remodeled from start to finish by the kitchen experts at Village Home Stores.

We schedule these consultations in our showroom before visiting your home so that you can get a better understanding of everything we offer and we are able to walk you through our estimating phases. Most people will only remodel a kitchen or bathroom in a home once or twice in a lifetime. It can be overwhelming to know where to start and what happens next. The great news is that we do this all the time! We are here to help walk you through our process and keep you on track and on budget. We want to help you to enjoy this process as much as possible. During this Consultation we will answer your questions and walk you through when you can expect to see your designs and estimates during our phases and discuss our payment options. We will also ask you some questions about the project, your goals, your budget, and who will be doing the work. There is a reason why budget conversations happen well before we begin estimating the project. This is to help us all stay on task and on track when designing your new space. After this Consultation, we will schedule a date for a Jobsite Visit in your home to gather information for us to begin the design phase.

Sometimes Our Biggest Skeptics Become Our Best Cheerleaders

Do you read every detail of a menu item before ordering at a restaurant? Do you answer “of course” when asked if you want your receipt? Did you already take general dimensions of your kitchen layout for us… on graph paper… and use a ruler? Do you have an engineering degree? Does your Summer Vacation this year have a customized itinerary? Have you started a spreadsheet for your remodel project already in Excel or Google Docs? If you answered yes to any of those questions then wow! You love the details and you respect the process! And guess what? You are going to be a HUGE fan of the Village Home Stores remodel process. We love the look on this type of customer’s face when we present our process checklists and walk them through our current and local budget data for projects like theirs. Some of our most appreciative start-to-finish customers are people who could have even done some of the work themselves. But who has the time or energy? We do!

Village Home Stores uses the latest tech available to record data and communicate with our remodel customers in the Quad Cities Region. That means our start to finish kitchen and bath remodel process changes and adapts every time we complete a job.

Let Us Get To Work For You

There is a lot to be done before you can enjoy your new space and gathering estimates is a big part of that. The truth is there are 3 and a half pages of phases and checklists before we even reach the phrase “Jobsite binder is delivered and job begins” in our process. There are 9 phases of our process and 7 of those happen before we begin demo. We won’t reveal every phase in detail here but we can summarize them a bit. After that Complimentary Consultation in our showroom we will come out to your home to gather information. Then we will get to work preparing a design to be presented to you. Our goal is to ask enough qualifying questions ahead of the design phase that we can present to you initial designs that are successful. We will next discuss any changes needed to the design and begin making product selections in the showroom. During this Design Presentation meeting in the showroom we will also have you meet with other Village team members in any departments you may need products from. During this meeting we will document you selections and help guide you based on our budget conversations. You will also be given private login information at this meeting so that you can begin to access your design, estimates, and eventually contracts and schedules moving forward. Once all of the work to be done is documented by our team, and we have a clear design concept, we can schedule a Contractor Meeting at your home.

All of your subcontractors and a team of Village experts created just for you and your project meet at your home together to prepare accurate estimates.
What sets Village Home Stores apart from other kitchen remodelers? Our process! All of your subcontractors and a team of Village experts created just for you and your project meet at your home together to prepare accurate estimates.

All of the subcontractors we anticipate needing for your project will meet your village designer and our project estimator in your home. All together at the same time. Sounds like an obvious need right? But you would be surprised how rare this is in our industry. At Village Home Stores we believe it is a key element to a successful estimating and end result for all parties involved. Here we can clarify what work is to be completed and included in estimates and allow the subs to have some dialog about the work to be done.

Our start-to-finish Project Management program at Village Home Stores changes and adapts with every project. We have also worked hard to curate a list of reliable, respectful subcontractors who can do quality work for you at a fair price. It has taken some time to get there, but we truly believe we can now say with confidence that our in-house and subcontractor staff are the very best you can ask to work in your home. We are so thankful to continue to get compliments on our staff and the subcontractors we send to our clients’ homes.

What Will An Estimate Include?

But we haven’t mentioned an actual bid or pricing yet? That’s right! We have agreed on a design, selected materials with our experts and your budget in mind, and have detailed estimates for the work to be done and now we can present you an estimate. You will receive a complete estimate along with a detailed inclusion sheet of the work included in that estimate. This estimate will be as accurate as possible before work begins. Of course there can be unforeseeable issues to come up any time you remodel a home. Rest assured that we have a process for that as well. Our crews are used to working together and communicating with you and each other to come up with solutions when problems come up. During your project our team stay customer-focused and solution-focused if issues arise.

Enough about our process! Let us show you around this incredible new kitchen in East Moline, IL. What a warm and open space! This new cabinet layout is packed with great storage and details. Glazzio glass wall tiles in two sizes with an accent listel in an Oil Rubbed Bronze finish cover the kitchen walls. A L-shaped layout with large center island includes plenty of walkway space between the surfaces now that the kitchen wall has been removed. We also removed that kitchen soffit and reworked the ceiling to better compliment the rest of the open areas of the home. The new design truly suits the home perfectly!

With a new flow to the entire space, flooring needed to be a new consistent surface throughout. Once again we are sharing a kitchen with our best-selling COREtec Luxury Vinyl Plank floors here on the blog. Sorry to sound like a broken record repeating itself but this COREtec Plus HD series is extremely durable and waterproof. It has the look and texture of a rustic wood surface. The Barnwood Rustic Pine selected for this kitchen is a great choice to pull from the cabinet stain and accent glaze. We just had two new racks of samples delivered for this product so if you are considering a new flooring surface for your home please come see your options. But can we take a moment please and talk about this lighted island!?!?!

This customer chose to install their Cambria Quartz in the Berkley design in a double-thick edge profile on the island. WOW! When they made that accent choice, the homeowner thought that accenting it even more with some lighting could make for a very cool effect. He was right! The look is pretty stunning day and night. This low-profile low-voltage tape light can be installed in a lot of fun ways. Because it is low-voltage, this island accent light can become the perfect nightlight or glow in the evening while watching TV or spending time out on the wrap-around deck.

The same Diode tape light is also installed underneath and above the kitchen perimeter cabinetry. We even concealed something else underneath the cabinets to keep the look clean. All of the kitchen switches and outlets are located in the recessed area under the wall cabinetry. This keeps the wall tile area smooth and un-interrupted. The Cambria quartz on the kitchen perimeter was installed with a farmhouse hammered copper Sinkology single-well sink and Delta Leland faucet.

This Delta Leland faucet comes with the new ShieldSpray Technology. This diverted spray option delivers a simple way to clean with precision while containing mess and splatter. A concentrated jet of water powers stubborn messes away in the center as a water shield simultaneously contains splatter and clears off the mess. It is like a forcefield around the spray power that keeps water from spraying everywhere. Learn more about ShieldSpray and see it in action here in this short YouTube clip.

Mixing metal finishes and textures can be such a great look in a rustic-styled space. This kitchen includes Oil Rubbed Bronze hardware, lighting, and faucets and a blend of Copper and Stainless. The farmsink is a hammered copper finish and the unique 30″ Zline hood is a mix of smooth copper and black trim. KitchenAid appliances in the Black Stainless finish add drama and a soft texture. If a silvery Stainless seems like it will look too modern in your space, be sure to stop by and see Black Stainless in person! This finish is so versatile and available in a lot of models. We did include on Stainless appliance in the kitchen. Tucked unto the interior corner of the island is a microwave drawer in a true Stainless Steel finish. Mixing metals can be done right and we love the look! Let our team help you with the total vision for your design.

A great kitchen design comes together in the details. Undercabinet molding helps to conceal those lights and outlets. Small details can make a big difference in the look of the overall finished space. In this kitchen the wall tile continues up around the kitchen window and is “capped” off by a valance and matching wooden panel above. The crown molding for the cabinetry has added interest with a change in depth on the corner cabinet.

Rural Kewanee Kitchen Gets a Refined Rustic New Look

Because of our location and a service radius that spreads over Illinois and Iowa farm country, we do a lot of work for farmers. They are such great customers who appreciate our store’s value of quality work and craftsmanship.  Plus we really really really respect the work that they do. So when a Midwest farmer chooses us to work for them, that is the ultimate compliment to our crews. In this case, the customer asked us to manage a kitchen remodel for them from start to finish… during harvest season! For those are close to any farming households you know that harvest is the busiest, most stress-filled, and demanding seasons of the year. So we felt such an added level of trust from this customer that they were allowing us to get to work for them while they were working so hard on their end. The result? This warm and inviting new space to come home to:

Rustic Beech wood cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Briarwood” stain and applied Black accent glaze looks right at home. The raised-panel Seneca door offers great edge details for that accent glaze to adhere to. Added crown molding, a valance area above the sink, and decorative baseboard trim provided even more edges to be accented. A beautiful tiled backsplash, staggered height and depth cabinets, and a farmsink completes the refined rustic look of the new kitchen.

A kitchen peninsula divides the kitchen from the dining area in the new open concept design. When space allows it, a peninsula can work so well with two heights. This design offers a standard base-height cabinet section on the interior (user) side of the peninsula, and raised bar-height top on the outside. The bar top includes an overhang for casual barstool seating. A barn door look on the back of the peninsula has been applied to compliment the kitchen and the entire great room space.

A Rustic Beech panel and applied trim in an “X” design breaks up the back panel space and adds such great character! Speaking of character, nothing adds rustic charm like a wooden beam. Once the original kitchen was torn out and the entrance widened, it was confirmed that a header would need to be placed above the peninsula area to help support the weight. We wrapped this header with paneling and trim to create the illusion of a large wooden beam. The finished result is perfect for the space!

Two pendant lights from Kichler hang on the inside of the beam. The pendants blend a matte black and brushed gold finish for the design. Cabinet handle hardware for this kitchen is from the Bremen series by Jeffery Alexander.  Cabinet hardware can be an important selection for the daily use of your kitchen. Be sure you select designs that looks great but also function well for you. Test out the handles to make sure your hand can comfortably fit to operate them.

On the interior of the Peninsula is a long work surface with plenty of outlets and storage solutions in the cabinetry. We installed a pullout trash cabinet on the end of the peninsula. This keeps the trash located centrally for users inside and outside of the kitchen. Near the inside corner is a specialty cabinet many will envy: a Tupperware organizer! This pullout unit includes a lower section for the containers and a top slotted section for lids. No more opening a cabinet door and bracing yourself for an avalanche!

Another fantastic storage upgrade is located near the cooking center of the new kitchen. A pullout cabinet opens to reveal utensil bins and knife storage. There is even a lower shelf that can also be used for large utensils or kitchen gadgets. This is just one of many storage options available in a pullout cabinet. Even small cabinet spaces can pack great storage solutions! Ask your designer at Village Home Stores about your options.

Of course an appliance garage is one of the original cabinet storage solutions ever added to kitchen cabinet lines. This kitchen includes a garage in an upgraded new style. Instead of an accordion or louvered door, this corner appliance garage has a matching cabinet door. Top-lift hardware is installed to let the door open out and up for a more spacious look and feel.

We made sure the new kitchen had plenty of outlets throughout. These stylish square outlets are from the adorne series by legrand. So many options for switches and outlets plus so many colors for plates to select from. We also love that the plates snap in place (no visible screws) for a smooth, clean look.

A rural Kewanee kitchen with legrand adorne outlet system. Koch Rustic Beech cabinetry and White Sand Granite featured. | villagehomestores.com

The countertops in this kitchen are a natural stone named “White Sand”. There is so much character in the slabs and the granite looks perfect in this completed design. That same legrand outlet company makes an undercabinet lighting system that is versatile and stylish. This system allows you customize locations for lighting, added outlets, speakers, devices, and more. One of the added benefits for this undercabinet system is it frees up the entire backsplash area for a tile design. No outlets to disrupt the layout of tile.

A rural Kewanee kitchen with legrand undercabinet system. Koch Rustic Beech cabinetry and White Sand Granite featured. | villagehomestores.com

We also installed this system across the room on the refrigerator wall. A dropzone/landing space for the kitchen is home to the phone dock and where mail and piles are welcome to collect. A bluetooth speaker and phone charging station is in place here. On this wall we gave a counter-depth refrigerator a real built-in look with a panel on the left side and a tall pantry cabinet on the right. This section of cabinetry stretches all the way to the ceiling with a crown riser and stacked molding.

Pay attention to the handles on the tall pantry cabinet above. Notice that they are the same style as the kitchen but a larger scale. This choice helps to better pair the door size with an appropriate handle and also to give a more solid open and close to the doors as they operate. What kind of details and cabinet upgrades would you pick for your own dream kitchen? Many of these cabinet inserts and add-ons are far more affordable than you would expect! The Holiday season gets the Village Home Stores team so excited. We are able to look back at all of the new spaces we have helped complete this year that will be enjoyed for their first Holiday this year. It brought us so much joy to visit this Kewanee home for a final walk-through and see it all decked out for the Christmas Season. Can we also just take a moment to enjoy how great this barn door looks in the dining room? The homeowner installed and stained the door to match the new kitchen themselves!

Princeton, IL- Kitchen and Bath Remodel in Princeton

We did a lot of remodel work in the home including bathroom remodels (more on that later) and new flooring in many rooms. This kitchen has come long way from the original in this Princeton, IL home. It now has an upgraded layout and materials. Take a look at this before photo:

Cabinetry upgrades that include storage solutions can be the very best way to treat yourself when you are remodeling a kitchen. In a remodel situation you know your space is limited and you have had a chance to use and experience the needs for what you hope to have in a new kitchen. Smart storage is the very best storage any kitchen can offer. Take a look at this convenient knife block cabinet we included by the prep and cooking zone. Koch cabinetry in a remodeled Princeton, IL kitchen with pullout knife block. | VillageHomeStores.com

Our designers will work closely with you to help establish a wishlist of items and find cabinet solutions that may be the perfect investment for your everyday use. Other great pullout storage cabinets are spice cabinets near the cooking zone. This cabinet shown is plenty wide so that spices and cooking oils and sprays can also fit within.  Pullout spice rack cabinet in a Princeton, IL kitchen. Across the kitchen is a tall pantry cabinet with a center shelf section for a microwave. To the left is a section of counter space above the dishwasher. This kitchen design includes a peninsula instead of an island. This allows a section of base cabinets and tops to extend out from the wall. The original kitchen had a bar-height section raised up and this new updated layout keeps the space open with just one single level. Birch Briarwood cabinetry in a remodeled Princeton, IL kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

At the inside corner of this peninsula is the new kitchen sink. New Engineered Quartz counters in the “Chakra Beige” color look great with an undermounted kitchen sink. Now this new peninsula is one large surface with an overhang for seating.

Another section of cabinet storage and countertop surface has been included near the kitchen table. This location makes a perfect morning station with space for the coffeepot and toaster. Birch wood is a wonderful choice for any traditional style kitchen space. The grain is very clean and smooth and many stains take to it in a way that compliments existing furniture and wood trim. The added accent glaze on the cabinet doors in this kitchen looks great with all of the oil rubbed bronze hardware and lighting.

We carry a variety of product categories at Village Home Stores to help make the entire remodel process easier to shop for. One of these product categories is wall switches and outlets. Our lighting team can help you and your tile salesperson find the perfect style and finish for these wall items that fits within your project budget and design concept. Geneseo, IL- Kitchen Remodel With Warm Birch Cabinets and Unique Quartz

The kitchen in any home can be the busiest room in the house. That is why we think it is so important to make it a space that suggests comfort as well as function. This Geneseo, IL kitchen invites you right in even by just viewing the photos. A warm and inviting selection of woods and other materials we know you will love.

Koch Classic cabinetry in the “Seneca” doorstyle and Birch “Briarwood” stain is a rich, medium toned wood that warms up the overall look. A black accent glaze has been applied to the cabinets to help enhance the edges of the doors and drawers as well as the details on moldings and finished ends. That black accent color is repeated in the dining table and chairs.

A tall section of cabinetry surrounds the refrigerator in this kitchen design. A wide pantry cabinet opens to reveal adjustable rollout shelving inside. At 24″ deep, this cabinet can store a lot of dry goods directly next to the freshfood storage in the refrigerator.

A small landing space of countertop allows a space for loading and unloading pantry items and a wonderful location apart from the food prep areas for daily mail and charging devices. Applied doors on the exposed ends of cabinetry give a polished off and complete look to the kitchen design.

On the opposite side of the refrigerator is another tall cabinet. This helps to “cap” off the refrigerator and give a more built-in and customized look overall. Because of the high-traffic location right by the back doorway, an angled tall cabinet was used. This keeps the cabinet from projecting too far into the kitchen but still allows for a lot of storage within.

Across from the refrigerator is the sink area of the kitchen. A double-well farm sink is the center of all attention beneath the kitchen window. A single-lever control kitchen faucet with pullout sprayer is installed for the sink and a reverse osmosis water system to the right of that.
A Geneseo, IL kitchen including white farmsink with low center divider. | VillageHomeStores.comThis farmsink is unique in that it includes a popular low-divider feature we have been seeing a lot of in composite undermounted sink options over the past few years. A lowered center divider allows for the sink to be filled when needed to a 1/3-1/2 fill. By having a lowered center divider, this keeps the sink overall area available for washing large items without making a watery mess on the nearby countertops.

This farmhouse sink is undermounted to a gorgeous quartz top from Cambria® Quartz. The “Harlech” design is a beautiful blend of neutral earth-tones with a sparkling gray veining throughout. This gives the look of a natural stone with all of the benefits of quartz. The tops truly dazzle and are showcased by our Diode LED low-voltage lighting installed underneath the wall cabinetry.

The adorne series of switches and outlets from our legrand line is a stylish choice for the new kitchen. Bright white basic outlets would stand out against the new tile. Instead, these unique switches add function and style to the space. The color of the plates is named “Ashton Tan”.  A 1’x2″ tile named “Crema Cappuccino” from Epic Stone has been installed throughout the new kitchen space. It is a wonderful compliment to the lighter colors found in the quartz design. Slight variations from tile to tile don’t compete with the business of the Harlech design.

Not every kitchen can accommodate an island in the given space. Sometimes including a peninsula is still the best layout choice to offer added base cabinet storage and counter surface. The back and exposed end of a kitchen peninsula still needs to be finished. This kitchen has been ordered with a back panel custom fit for the length of the peninsula back. The panel mimics the raised center panel design of the kitchen cabinet doors. The “end” of the peninsula is a 12″ deep cabinet with double doors for added storage.

The side of that “end” cabinet has been treated with an applied door to look like a cabinet when viewing from the interior of the kitchen layout. A stainless steel dishwasher from KitchenAid® is quiet at just 43 decibels. It includes an express wash option and adjustable upper and lower rack layouts. Love this kitchen? Moline, IL- Kitchen Remodel Fully Managed From Start to Finish

This Moline, IL kitchen is a tale that we are sure many can relate to. The original kitchen cabinets were in a very functional layout but beginning to show the wear and tear of years of use. After years and years of “maybe someday I’ll replace them”… this Spring “someday” had finally come. beforeNow the kitchen is updated with new cabinetry plus we removed an entire wall to make room for an island in the new design. The original kitchen shared the same L-shaped layout but the opposite end had a corner of walls with just enough room for a small table and two chairs. Kitchen remodel in Moline, IL managed from start to finish. | VillageHomeStores.com

Now with one of those back walls removed, the kitchen is open and bright. Birch wood Cabinetry from our Koch classic line has been installed in the “Westbrook” door style. A “Chestnut” stain has been applied and a “Black” accent glaze highlights the door and trim details. Engineered Quartz countertops in the “Chakra Beige” design is a neutral tone-on-tone look.

This crown is the perfect style and scale for the project. It even includes an area for the accent glaze to catch. With plenty of cabinet space within reach on each wall, an area above the cabinets is left to display items.

A white Whirlpool® range and microwave hood are also part of the new kitchen. Microwave hoods can save counterspace and be installed to vent out of the home or re-circulate the air. The original kitchen had just a range hood installed, now the microwave is off the counter.

The new electric range includes an easy-wipe ceramic glass cooktop. The most dramatic difference in the new kitchen came when we removed a wall that divided the kitchen from the dining room. Removing this one wall has helps this kitchen seem to grow in space even though it hasn’t extended any further into the dining room than before. The small table and chairs is now replaced with a large single-level kitchen island with seating for two comfortably.

With open shelves installed on each end of the island, the largest base cabinet included faces in toward the kitchen sink. Behind the double doors of this cabinet are two slide-out shelves. The “ends” to each open shelf cabinets have been treated with “applied doors” on each side. This gives the illusion of doors and helps complete the look instead of just a smooth panel. The back of the island includes three applied doors and two wood decorative supports for the overhang.

The island is really the focal point of this new kitchen and the accent glaze highlights all of the details perfectly. While the island steal the show in the kitchen, the new hardwood Walnut flooring is now showcased through the entire upper level of this home. The Walnut hardwood in the “Saddle” finish is from our Hallmark Hardwood line. Read more about Hallmark and some of our other projects here at this link.

Flooring and remodel work in Moline, IL | VillageHomeStores.comThe hardwood flooring was not the only new flooring installed at this remodeled home. The split-foyer layout was given a whole new look right at the stairway leading up into the new hardwood open-concept. A new stair rail and banister were installed and carpeting from our Dixie Home line was put in on both sets of stairs. This carpet is from the “Rock Creek” series in the “Ginger color. It is a 100% Stainmaster® carpet that resists stains, abrasive wear over time, and even has anti-static protection. That means you reduce your chances of static shock. This homeowner knew that she wanted to be sure to include our LED undercabinet lighting in her new kitchen. She had seen this system in our previous projects and on our TV show so it was at the top of her wish list for the new kitchen. That lighting was a great investment to help showcase her new subway tile backsplash in the kitchen. 3″ x 6″ glass tiles from our Jeffrey Court line in the “Buff” color are the perfect choice and pair perfectly with the countertops selected.
