Who’s ready for a break from all of the white painted kitchens we have been sharing so much of? Please hear this friendly reminder that while white kitchens continue to grace the covers of home design magazines and HGTV shows… that look is not for everyone. Thankfully our team is here to make YOUR kitchen dream a reality, not someone else’s! Take a look at this sophisticated new kitchen remodel we just wrapped up in Taylor Ridge, IL with a refreshing new take on painted cabinetry.
Our best-selling raised panel doorstyle from Koch Classic is named “Seneca” and in this new kitchen we have included a Maple wood with “Black” painted finish from Koch. Five-piece drawerfronts (see island cabinet above) offer lots of added edges for the light to highlight this rich painted finish. Many would think that a black painted kitchen would be dark and cold but take a look at this bright and inviting new space! We have added a great new lighting plan, removed a portion of a wall, and even included glass in the doors above the kitchen sink.
A key element in keeping the space feeling bright and open is leaving plenty of walkway space surrounding the downsized kitchen island. When you are in this new kitchen you would never use the phrase “downsized” to describe this island in reality. It is exactly the right size for the kitchen design. It’s all about scale! If you have been curious about fitting an island in your own kitchen design, let one of our expert designers see what could fit for you within a functional layout. In this case, one very large base cabinet was simply ordered at a standard shallower depth of 18″ instead of 24″ and the one modification created the perfectly-scaled island cabinet.
That shallower depth still allows for a functional drawer above the lower storage and now gives room in this space for a countertop overhang for seating. The result is a centrally-located surface for prep and casual dining. The large quartz counter surface of the island is now within reach of the sink wall, the refrigerator wall, and the cooking zone of the kitchen. We were able to keep these beautiful existing cherry hardwood floors from the original kitchen because the peninsula layout didn’t change and we did not remove the lower half of the dividing wall.
Across the room from the kitchen sink you will find the 4-Door Refrigerator and cooking zone. Our Sharp Over-The-Counter Microwave is tucked into the area between the two. This nook creates a great location for small appliances and would make a wonderful location for a coffee station in the kitchen. Our team removed a large section of a wall that divides the kitchen from the dining room and nearby living room space.
We capped off the half-wall with a long slab of matching Cambria quartz. This large pass-through area now creates the open concept design that this home truly deserves. And with two outlets on the inside of this ledge, this becomes a great counter for serving guests and entertaining. Speaking of entertaining, on the half-wall that divides the kitchen from the dining room is a new Whirlpool electric front-control range boasting 6.4 cubic ft. of capacity!
It also has convection features allowing a consistent oven temperature and the ability to cook with all racks at once. Shop your local low price guaranteed prices on all appliances from Vilage Home Stores right here on our website. We service the the Quad Cities and many surrounding areas with appliance sales and service. We have noticed a rise in popularity with matte black finishes in our industry. Our Black Stainless appliances continue to be very popular and honed and brushed finishes on black countertops is also requested often. Tile surfaces, lighting, and plumbing fixtures as well as home accessories are all trending to a matte black look. We love the level of sophistication it can bring to a cabinet design. Just look at how the daylight shows off this great stylish finish!
The quartz countertop surfaces in this Taylor Ridge remodel are from our Cambria Quartz line. The “Seagrove” design is a bright blend of whites and shimmering silvers plus gray and black flecks making it the perfect way to tie in all of the new finishes in the kitchen (psst! ask your designer about some of our exclusive priced Cambria options). An Ogee edge profile was applied and we think it really compliments the raised panel details of the cabinetry doors and drawers.

The rumors you have heard are true, Oak cabinetry is having it’s moment again in our industry! The look trending right now just may not look like the 80’s/90’s Oak kitchens you have seen in the past. Doorstyles and finish trends are different and there are a lot of great ideas out there for how to two-tone a kitchen design using an Oak finish. The best remodel result from the rising Oak trend right now is that you can get a new look in your kitchen and bath that compliments the existing Oak trim and doors you have throughout your home. A great example of this is in a recent remodel we just finished in Colona, IL. Take a look:
Red Oak in the Highland door and warm gray “Heather” stain allows the wood grain to enhance and add texture to the kitchen. This kitchen showcases our Dura Supreme line of cabinetry in a way that thinks outside of the “white kitchen” box! Yes, a great cabinet solution when you have existing wood trim and doors is to go with a painted finish… but what about a contrasting stain instead? The kitchen image below is a great example of how this Heather gray stain allows the woodgrain to be enhanced and compliments the nearby oak door and existing oak antique hutch right next to the tall pantry cabinet.
As you can see in these images from the finished kitchen, the woodgrain adds so much depth and texture to the space. Gray stain is an updated approach to an Oak kitchen. The finished kitchen has its own impact but now looks right a home with all of the other surrounding spaces as well. A small island is at the center of the U-shaped kitchen design. This provides a great landing space for the cooking and refrigerator zones and also a large work surface for a second kitchen user if another is at the sink or cooking areas.
The wall tile in this kitchen remodel was another material selection that showcases natural beauty. An “Arctic Gray” honed Limestone is cut and beveled into 2″x4″ tiles and each is different from the next. The lightest of the tiles mirrors the color of the countertops, and the darkest mirrors the color of the cabinetry stain. Our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system showcases this tile day or night. Learn more about this product here on our YouTube channel.
Another silvery gray finish in the kitchen is found in the new Stainless Steel cooking suite we installed from our Viking Appliance line. Did you know that Village Home Stores is the largest Viking showroom between Chicago and Des Moines?! Offering a full line of products with many units installed and on display in kitchen vignettes in our showroom at 105 S State Geneseo, IL. In this kitchen we included a microwave hood and freestanding gas range.
This professional convection microwave hood offers the convenience of a microwave and hood all in one. The convection microwave delivers real convection cooking and the built-in ventilation system clears the air while keeping odors at bay. Heat and brown settings such as ConvecBroil, ConvecRoast, ConvecBake, and of course manual convection make it not only as a microwave, but a second oven. You don’t need a 3′ or 4′ wide space to get a professional-level gas range in your kitchen! Check out this 30″ wide freestanding model:
This Viking 3 series range includes continuous grates with 5 sealed burners beneath. High performance cooking modes include Natural Airflow Bake, Convection Bake, Broil, Convection Broil, Convection Dehydrate, and Convection Defrost. Plus it has the convenience of self-cleaning! Contact an appliance expert at Village Home Stores today to learn more about our Viking appliance options.
Did you know that we also offer wall switch and outlet systems in our lighting department? This Colona kitchen remodel features our Radiant series from Legrand in the Nickel finish. A clean, complimenting look with the rest of the kitchen finishes and no visible screws! We have a lot of our showroom set up with this product so do stop in anytime and see your options.
The countertop surfaces in this remodeled kitchen are from our Cambria Quartz line. The Berwyn design has been a bestseller for us for a handful of years now. It is such a winning mix of warm grays and whites that it looks fantastic in such a wide variety of completed spaces! Cambria Quartz is a great surface selection for your kitchen because it is foodsafe, maintenance free, and extremely durable. See the full album of photos from this completed remodel here on our Houzz profile. We love the glass door details in this kitchen design. Dura Supreme offers many options for glass door styles and inserts. Your designer from Village will work with you to decide what style and insert material would work best for your space and lifestyle.
This kitchen uses a double cathedral-arched mullion shape with a textured glass insert. Texture or frosted glass can be a great choice if you want the decorative look of glass door cabinets… without having to “display” items within it. Another great glass texture in the completed space is found in the kitchen island lighting. Two mercury glass pendant lights from the Everly series by Kichler look so stunning on and off! When illuminated, a warm glow is the result and when turned off, the glass still has such a unique texture!

Blue cabinetry is having more than just a “moment” in the Kitchen and Bath industry! We have installed so many stunning spaces over the past fews years that have introduced a painted blue finish and now it is become such a staple option for Transitional, Scandinavian, and Modern Farmhouse styled spaces. Blue cabinetry is forecasted to remain an accent color for many years to come. Our Koch Classic Cabinetry line makes a neutral blue-gray paint called “Charcoal Blue” and it truly makes a great statement as the island finish in this Bettendorf, Iowa kitchen.
This home, built by Edgebrooke Homes, was a QCBR Fall Parade of Homes stop and it is such a wonderful example of how Village can partner with you and your builder to save you time AND money. Shopping our one-stop-shop experience and bundling your purchases is the way to go and it gets you a a more complete design concept! Complete, cohesive designs begin with a vision early on in the design phase. Village works hard to keep you on track with that vision (and budget). This great room design concept blends bright painted whites, a Charcoal Blue accent, gray-toned wood floors, and warm rustic woods.
The main kitchen perimeter is a “White” painted cabinetry in the same “Bristol” doorstyle as the kitchen island. Staggered heights and depths of wall cabinetry can help to add interest to a kitchen design that has tall ceilings. This kitchen also includes two heights for casual dining. A large dinette area at dining height, and a single-level kitchen island extends to add more seating at the island.
The pantry and refrigerator wall of the kitchen actually conceals a hidden feature. The pantry doors open to reveal access to the large walk-in pantry space that turns the corner behind the wall of cabinetry. This same look can be applied in a remodel situation with existing closets or unique spaces. Ask your designer at Village Home Stores how we can include one in your own design.
Village Home Stores doesn’t want to just know what kitchen spaces inspire you… we want to know what your own dream kitchen looks like. We know it can be difficult for our clients to have a clear vision of what that looks like early on in the design phase. That is why we are here to help. You showing us spaces and ideas that inspire you, helps us build a concept for your own space and tastes. We have a number of great specialty cabinet options like this pantry front that can take your design to the next level! Press play below to see the pantry doors open up to reveal the hidden room behind them.
The tall pantry cabinet is balanced by the refrigerator surround on the opposite end of this wall. Also included on this wall is a microwave drawer unit. Microwave drawers are a great way to keep the microwave appliance off of the counter and reachable for any users. Another great location for a microwave drawer is in a kitchen island. This section of the featured kitchen creates a great landing space of countertop for loading and unloading the refrigerator and also a work surface for microwave use and food prep.
Counter depth refrigerator models can really help you so much when the design demands it for traffic paths and space allowances. In this kitchen, a standard depth unit works perfectly “built-in” against the wall on one side and with a tall, deep panel on the other. A deep cabinet above completes the look. The 36″ wide Whirlpool model fits and offers so much great storage. It also stays looking great with a Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel finish that easily wipes clean.
The kitchen island includes the kitchen sink and a Whirlpool dishwasher. This dishwasher is quiet at just 47 decibels (normal conversation is at about 50 dba). A TotalCoverage Spray Arm cleans with twice the jets as usual and an In-Door Silverware Basket frees up rack space by easily fitting on the front of the lower rack or in the door to make room for more dishes.
To shop our appliances you can browse our website here anytime or day. Village Home Stores offers our customers an expert sales staff and the award-winning customer experience you deserve plus our Local Low Price Guarantee. The countertop surface in this gorgeous kitchen is the Swanbridge design by Cambria Quartz Surfaces. The look of a polished, white marble in a durable maintenance-free surface. Swanbridge is available in the polished (shown) finish as well as a soft, matter finish.
The lighting for the great room has a dark, matte bronze metal finish. Clear glass on the Feiss “Baskin” pendants above the island keep the space feeling light and airy. The Sea Gull Ravenwood Manor Chandelier in the dinette area has 5 exposed vintage bulbs. This 5-light fixture adds style and impact to the space. A great look for this casual but upscale space.
By not including a microwave hood in a kitchen you and your designer at Village Home Stores have many more decorative options for a hood in your kitchen. In this Bettendorf kitchen design we were able to include a decorative wood hood. We fit the hood cabinet with a 390 CFM Broan insert for the range and cooktop area below. Check out the great freestanding double-oven range on this wall.
Two oven cavities so you can bake at two seperate temperatures. The gas cooktop includes a 5th center oval burner. This gas cooktop has EZ-2-Lift™ hinged grates to make clean up easy! Press play below to see these hinged grates in action:
This model is packed with so many great features like Frozen Bake™. Skip preheating the oven for frozen faves like pizza, lasagna, chicken nuggets, fries or pies, thanks to Frozen Bake™ technology. It also bakes with true convection cooking. That helps you cook foods faster by using a third element plus a fan to distribute hot air evenly over, under and around your food. The kitchen is a part of a larger great room space and a gorgeous engineered Oak wood floor ties many of the main-level spaces together. This engineered Oak is from Hallmark Flooring’s Novella series and it is the Fitzgerald color.
That same flooring is installed in the foyer, great room, kitchen, pantry, dinette, powder room and the formal dining room shown above. We love the light fixture selected for the formal dining room. The “Fall Flora” chandelier by Quorum looks amazing! One of the best things about being in our industry is that every single project we work on is different from the next. Even when kitchen and bath trends are put into action, the applications are always different because no space is the same. Village Home Stores has the great privilege of placing our designs and products in new and existing homes in the extended Quad Cities Region and we love each project we complete. We normally don’t admit it when we have favorites… but this week’s featured remodel story in Bettendorf, Iowa is one of our favorites fromf the year for sure!
This Bettendorf, Iowa customer found Village Home Stores by catching our weekly television show that airs every Sunday at 9am on WQAD. On the Village Home Show we are able to showcase remodel stories from right here in the Quad Cities area. So when this family was ready, they knew who to call. The original oak cabinetry layout really divided the kitchen from the dining and living spaces. There is a beautiful outside pool area just steps away from the kitchen in this home. With the peninsula in place, it was a long voyage to the kitchen sink from the pool.
We were so thrilled with the ideas they came to us with for a more open concept kitchen. When we say that the kitchen is the hub of the home, this household is a great example of that. With access to lofted living room and the backyard pool retreat, this new kitchen design needed to be functional and stylish. We began by removing the original kitchen… but kept one main element in place to help save some cost to the clients.
This kitchen has been given a whole new look but we kept the original tile floors! That’s right! Because the tile flooring was installed before the original kitchen cabinets went in, there was no void left when we tore out the kitchen peninsula. A new knee-wall was installed with power for island outlets. Take one more look at the original oak kitchen with the peninsula + table layout….
…and now the kitchen absorbs the dining space into one cohesive look. In fact, the kitchen and dining spaces are now joined into one concept by an incredible and versatile island design. The overall space has been brightened up significantly with lighter, airy material selections, added lighting, and the installation of mirror in some cabinetry.
A large kitchen island is the centerpiece to the new open concept. On the end near the backyard access, a custom table has been placed at dining height. We designed the dining table to be placed right next to the kitchen island. However, the table can be moved out if needed. A custom wood base was built for this design by our carpentry team and our painters painted it to compliment the kitchen cabinetry and trim.
A gorgeous wood top from our Craft-Art line was secured on top of the base. With the main kitchen cabinetry all in painted finishes, a woodgrain was a welcomed element. The Black Walnut plank-style wood top adds warmth and an upscale texture to the space. We think its is best complimented with the warm backslash tile glowing with our undercabinet lighting system.
Can’t find the right table to match your new kitchen from Village? Let us make one for you to ensure that it lines up with the overall design concept! Finding the right size and finish can be tricky. But rest assured, we can build just about anything you can dream up. This rich, smooth Black Walnut top was given a stylish and classic “Ogee” edge profile. The feel and sheen of these wood tops are truly heirloom quality. Learn more about these wood tops here in a previous post.
Even though this wood top is a showstopper, the Cambria Quartz in this kitchen is not to be ignored. Take a peek at this image below showing the remodel while it was still in progress. Notice that a piece of Cambria was installed on the cooktop wall for a dramatic look.
This statement wall creates a dramatic contrast of a marble look on the wall with a graphic black hood as an eye-catching continuation from the dark base cabinets. In fact, the Cambria Britannica Warm Quartz seems to almost cascade down behind the hood, flow up from the floor, over the kitchen island, and pour back down again on the other side.
Of course a glassy, gloss finish in a bright space always adds a great upscale detail. This Cambria design includes warm gray veining and is a classic compliment to the dark appliances and painted base cabinetry. A new approach to a two tone kitchen, dark painted bases with a bright and airy upper cabinet in a separate finish. Many times this trend is installed with open or floating shelves for the upper cabinetry. But in this design, we wanted to provide as much usable storage as possible.
The use of mirrors in some of the wall cabinetry does add a lighter weight to the look of the upper cabinets. The “X” design in the cabinet door is an updated and more Transitional style detail. We love the way mirrors help to brighten up a room (plus conceal the cabinet interior).
Quartz in a marble look is a great choice for a busy kitchen and large island work surface like this. Cambria Quartz in the Brittanicca Warm design offers a classic look of a marble with a maintenance-free advantage. The island countertop has a standard “Eased” edge applied to it to maintain a cleaner installation and look with the waterfalling edge.
Curious about waterfall edges? Stop by our showroom in Downtown Geneseo and see our front desk area that showcases this look. Village Home Stores offers many departments all under one roof to make the entire selection process easier on you and your designer. We encourage you to come with any ideas you have collected during your research phase but also take a look around and inside all of our cabinetry displays. We offer so many specialty cabinets and can show them to you. Our Dura Supreme line of cabinetry is loaded with so many great options! This kitchen of includes great sliding shelf storage but also a mixer lift cabinet right in the island.
See more of this entire kitchen in detail over on our Best of Houzz-winning Portfolio. See the full album of images here. We also installed a spice pullout, lazy susan, and an auto-open waste basket! Press play below to watch the waste basket cabinet open with just a nudge.
Matte Black is one of our favorite home trends and this kitchen rocks the trend so well! The soft, rich look of Dura Supreme’s painted “Graphite” finish on the base cabinetry pairs so well with KitchenAid’s Black Stainless Steel finish appliances. Black Stainless is not just for super contemporary spaces. This Transitionally-styled space is proof of that. Plus it is fingerprint resistant!
KitchenAid was the first in their industry to launch a Black Stainless Steel finish and the look is sophisticated. But a KitchenAid kitchen is at it’s best when in use! A counter-depth French Door refrigerator includes incredible fresh and frozen food storage. A 30″ Combination Wall Oven and Microwave has so many features and a large capacity when needed. Another great appliance detail in this kitchen is the undercounter 15″ Ice Maker. What an absolute dream for anyone who entertains! Of course when you have a pool… people tend to show up.
This 15″ automatic ice maker produces ice that is perfect for every occasion. It opens to reveal a storage bin that can hold up to 25 pounds of ice. Next to the Ice Maker we installed a beverage cooler with a custom panel to match the cabinetry. This kept the beverage area of the new kitchen looking symmetrical. Panel-ready appliances can be a wonderful custom option. We offer them in many refrigerator and dishwasher options. We kept the original tile floors in the kitchen but a new tile backsplash was installed.
3″ x 12″ textured tiles in “New Yorker” series and “Taupe” color. We love how they almost have the appearance of being underwater with their texture and reflection. Our stylish adorne series of switches and outlets from legrand looks great on the tile in a contrasting color and matte finish.
The square design of this series looks great and is very versitile with options. Since sart home tech is at the top of every homeowner and homebuyer’s wishlist we should also mention this kitchen lighting system takes voice commands! Using the legrand app and connected to an amazon Alexa, we had a lot of fun testing out this new product. Press play below to watch a Facebook live video we taped at this completed jobsite to see how easy it is to use voice commands with this adorne system.
Smart home tech has reached the kitchen industry in a big way over the last few years and this year even more products are set to launch to make your life easier and more enjoyable. This homeowner was able to connect many of the lighting switches in the home and now can even switch lights off and on when they are away from home using the app.
We have completed many new spaces using the adorne series from legrand. These outlet covers are a perfect match to the painted Graphite cabinetry in this kitchen. They match so well that our “hidden” pop-up outlet in the island is totally camouflaged when it isn’t in use.
A hands-free waste basket cabinet, voice-controlled lighting, and even a wave-controlled kitchen faucet! There is just so much from this kitchen remodel story it is almost impossible to showcase it all here on the blog. We hope to film an upcoming episode of the Village Home Show to show you more of these great features in action.

We are not just beautiful kitchen remodels. Since the launch of our Full Project Management Program, we have gained quite the reputation for becoming a reliable, time-efficient, and customer-focused choice in the Quad Cities region for full bathroom remodels as well! This Moline, IL Master Bathroom is our featured project this week because it includes many items that top wishlists of all our bath remodel customers. Take a look at this elegant Master Bathroom:
Of course a lot of counter space and two sinks are a priority in any Master Bathroom design. This Moline bath had a generous amount of wall space available for the vanity area. Our designer from Village Home Stores included as much drawer storage as possible from our Dura Supreme line of cabinetry. The Full-Overlay Craftsman door was selected in a rich Cherry wood and “Peppercorn” finish. What does Full-Overlay mean? Take a look at the image below and notice the small gaps between the doors and drawers:
Traditional overlay would leave gaps about 2-3 times larger that what you see here. In a Full Overlay style (like shown), those gaps are minimal. This Gives your doors and drawers more space to spread across the faceframe of the cabinet openings behind them. Full overlay styles also help to hide the seams of cabinets when you install them in a long row like we have done here. It is hard to tell where each individual cabinet begins and ends. One jaw-dropping material choice in this Master Bath is the Cambra Quartz design selection. “Ellesmere” is a rich and sparkling blend of so many colors and it looks right at home in this Master Suite.
In fact Ellesmere has some of the same colors the original bathroom had. Rich gold metallics and vibrant earthtones. On the subject of the original bathroom design, that brings us back to that customer wishlist. In the past few years we have removed so many large Jacuzzi tubs from Master Bathrooms. Clients found that this trend as not as practical for their lifestyle. Instead we are often asked to present a solution that borrows that space for something else. Sometimes this is a closet, a smaller tub with more room for a shower, or even a storage bench.
Because 9 times out of 10 these giant soaking tubs were installed beneath a large window area, bench seating really does look perfect there. In this bathroom we created a space matching the same Cherry “Peppercorn” cabinetry and ordered a wood top to match. A custom cushion is already on order for this bench. Yes it looks cool but look at all those drawers! With two walk-in closets already in the room, these drawers can be used for linen storage or toiletries.
Above the original tub are there was a hanging crystal chandelier. The new light fixture included in the Master Bath is an updated take on a traditional chandelier. This orb light by Feiss takes a modern light style and adds sparkle on the interior of the polished nickel metal. We have installed this same light this year into bedrooms, foyers, and even above kitchen islands. Come see sparkle it in person because we have two hanging above our Appliance Sales desk as well in the showroom!
The shower area also saw many updates to give a more bright and open look. You don’t need a gigantic amount of space to include a lot of features into a custom tiled shower. This 3-wall alcove is proof of that. Take a peek at the before and after images below:
Dual shower heads and now tiled all the way to the ceiling, this tiled shower looks great! A custom glass shower door includes a fixed panel of glass on the right and a hinged entry door on the left. Dated polished brass fixtures were replaced with bright polished chrome for the shower and faucet finishes.
A short step up and into the tiled shower is trimmed off nicely with metallic strips at the edges. The Phenix Ravello series of tile was used throughout the bathroom. A 13″ x 13″ “Champagne” tile was installed as the main bathroom floor and on the shower walls. A smaller 2″x 2″ “Pearl” tile was used as the shower base.
A decorative row of tile was selected to tie together the wall tile and the Cambria counters on the nearby vanity. This geometric tile from Glazzio’s Hexagon series is a perfect pairing! The Tranquil colors bring in the wall and floor tile and also compliment the cabinet and quartz colors!
Of course the best part about creating a custom tiled shower with our clients is customizing it with them! Adding niches, benches, and shelves are a great way to add practical elements that can look great too! This shower showcases a glass corner shelf added up within reach of the shower user. This can be a great shelf for toiletries or razors. We also added a corner bench/footrest below that.
Perfect for more toiletries or resting a leg while shaving. We even added a strip of accent tile to the front face of the shelf for another little custom detail. Great designs really are made with detail choices like that. Beautiful spaces are really created by layers of details. Who would want a basic white lightswitch to distract from all of these other stunning choices? Our Adorne series by legrand is far from basic! This series of wall switches and outlets offer an updated look and so many color combination possibilities! Contact a lighting expert at Village today to learn more.
Steve’s Mirror & Glass created the shower door entry as well as the the custom mirror that hangs above the vanity. They also provided beveled mirror outlet covers to surround the Adorne outlets on the vanity mirror. A great customized look!
This Moline, IL bathroom remodel turned out amazing! And it isn’t even complete yet! That custom bench seat cushion is on it’s way and soon a gorgeous metallic faux finish wall treatment will be applied to the walls. Are you ready to start the conversation about your own bathroom remodel with Village Home Stores? You can contact our bath remodel team at (309) 944-1344 or by completing this short online form.
