Davenport, IA- Warm Cherry Cabinets and Large Black Painted Island

This Davenport, IA kitchen has been completely remodeled to extend its footprint into a nearby dining room. There is now plenty of space for a long L-shaped layout with a large island. Warm Cherry cabinetry from our DuraSupreme line has been installed in the full-overlay  “Kendall” doorstyle and “Clove” finish. A “Black” painted island in the same raised-panel doorstyle offers a bold contrast to the kitchen cabinets and new LVT White Oak flooring.

With the removal of a wall that divided the original kitchen from the dining room taken out, there is now plenty of space for a large kitchen island. The new island measures over 8 feet in length and includes large drawer storage and doors that open to reveal slide-out shelves within. Press play below to watch this entire remodel story unfold on Season 2 Episode 6 of the Village Home Show.

This episode of our show helps to walk you through the entire remodel process from start to finish with us. We often share just the before and after parts of a remodel story… but that is not the whole story at all! This episode allows us to return to the jobsite while the real work is happening. With our show, we are able to give you access to more of the entire story that went behind the beautiful finished kitchen tours we share here on the blog. Take a look at the before and after images from this kitchen below highlighting how much more cabinet space is now available with the center wall removed.Davenport kitchen before and after remodel. | VillageHomeStores.com

Because it can now stretch into the original dining room area, this new kitchen design is nearly double what it once was. There is even an area remaining for a casual dining space with 4 chairs. Just because we have absorbed the original dining room as part of the new kitchen, doesn’t mean this home is left without one. An adjacent front room has now been claimed as the new formal dining room area. The before and after image below shows the view into the new kitchen from this new front room dining area. Dining room becomes part of kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The window that now sits above the sink was far to low in the original dining room to accommodate a kitchen beneath it. A new window was installed at a taller height and now instead of looking up to a pass-through, the sink user gets a beautiful view! The cabinetry surrounding the new kitchen window has been finished with raised-panel ends for an added design detail. Can lighting is concealed behind a matching cherry valance and a cherry dustcover on the ceiling completes this look.

Beautiful Cambria® Quartz counters in the “Fairborne” design are installed in a standard “Eased” edge profile. A Tumbled Travertine tiled backsplash is a perfect match in tone adding a new texture against the smooth, polished quartz tops. A 50/50 well sink by Blanco in the “Biscotti” finish has been undermounted to the quartz.

The remodel process with Village Home Stores doesn’t begin on that first demo day. Your remodel starts with us in the store during the designing and material selection phases of your project. A wood hood look like the one shown above begins as a full-color rendered design you can see in your first presentation from our store. Renderings help you get a better vision for the finished space including the materials you have selected.

As you will see in the episode, there are plenty of specialty cabinets within this kitchen design. Dura Supreme offers a wide variety of pull-out options including knife blocks, spice racks, and this towel bar cabinet. Keep cleaning supplies accessible but separate from food with one of these unique specialty cabinets. This towel cabinet also works great in a bathroom or laundry room design.

Surrounding the refrigerator is a tall pantry cabinet that has been fit with adjustable slide-out shelving. There is a built-in pantry storage area on the end of the kitchen that is not shown in these images. That pantry can now be used for household items and food storage can be exclusively in this tall unit adjacent to the refrigerator.

The tall pantry is capped off with an open shelf cabinet that faces those entering from the garage-entry end of the kitchen. Applied doors have been attached to the end of this cabinet to sit flush with the pantry doors and customize the look. The shelves can be used to display seasonal decor, cookbooks, or decorative dishes. This design also works well on the end of an island as we have shown in this Moline kitchen tour.

Erie, IL – The 4 Cabinet Laundry Room

To many, one cabinet in the laundry would seem like a luxury. Any storage you can get is much appreciated. If you have a large space and want a complete look but don’t want to fill it completely with cabinetry, you have some creative options. Spread out and use your space strategically. This laundry room tour shows us that just four cabinets and some trim can create a fully finished off laundry space worthy of your Pinterest envy.

Cherry cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Prairie” door and Cherry “Briarwood” finish paired with laminate countertops in the “Parquet Latte” color. This cabinet doorstyle and finish seem familiar? It might be because we shared a tour of the kitchen in the same home a few weeks back. See that tour here. This new laundry space is located right off the newly remodeled kitchen area:laundry off kitchen

This laundry room looks complete and well thought out. Our designer at Village Home Stores was able to fill the space with a functional layout using only 4 cabinets and some trim. A tall linen cabinet and single wall cabinet have been installed on each end of the wall that greets you upon entering. That leaves the perfect void of space between them to add a tension rod for hanging items to dry.

Including a hanging rod in the design frees up space elsewhere that a drying rack might have needed on the floor or countertop. Now the entire countertop space can be used as a folding and sorting center in the laundry room.

Even that countertop looks like a customized area because a cherry filler strip has been added below the laminate as an apron valance. The laminate top itself is supported by cleats along the wall. There is plenty of space below for the Maytag front-load washer and dryer. This same counter and apron application can be used in a desk area or craft room space.

The third cabinet included is a sinkbase. A laminate top with drop-in deep single-well sink is perfect for this multi-purpose space. The function of a utility sink, but also a nice look when this space is used as a guest powder room. The soft blue paint color selected is a great look and the perfect choice for this laundry space.

There is a toilet located to the right of this sinkbase and above that, another wall cabinet. Plenty of areas to store items out of sight. This is a great option to have in such a versatile space like this room. See more images (including before photos)  from this laundry space and the kitchen just outside here on our houzz page. Davenport Remodel: Cabinet Curiosity

davenport_remodel_kitchenThis kitchen remodel is so new to these homeowners they haven’t even had the chance to “move into” the new cabinetry. I stopped by last night to take some final photos to share here on the blog and was greeted by two very sweet cats right when I walked in the front door. These cats were very curious about my camera and equipment and still very curious about their new kitchen. With their permission, we would like to show you around the new space…

Range_wallThe original kitchen was ready for an update but the layout itself was also in need of a few changes. These customers worked closely with their designer at Village to find the space to expand the island in the new layout. The new cabinets also extend all the way to the ceiling for over a foot of added shelf space in all of the wall cabinets.

Durian BuildersThe original island in the kitchen worked well as a landing and prep area but only included two small cabinets. The new island is almost twice as long and now includes a curved end section that will act as an eat-in dinette area. The curving overhang on the back travels on into the inside area of the kitchen island as well. Counter-height barstools are on order for this new island.

The clients knew they wanted to select a Cambria Quartz for their countertops but were not sure which design they liked best. One of our favorite things about Cambria is that not only are they made in the US, they are made in the Midwest! While these homeowners happen to be traveling through Minnesota, Cambria welcomed them to stop by and see full slabs of their designs. Once they spotted this ” “Bradshaw” color in person, they knew it was perfect.

curved_island_topCountertops that overhang in toward the user are very common in many island designs. The back end of this island is paneled for a very polished and finished look. The front side facing the kitchen sink wall is full of much needed cabinetry storage.

drawer_undercounterIn most cases a “full-height door” cabinet will be included in any area that the counter will overhang above it. The overhang itself keeps you from fully accessing the top drawer of a standard base cabinet. By carefully planning the location of the island curve, this design allows a standard base cabinet with a wide top drawer to have full access.

Now that we offer flooring and backsplashes our customers have began to select some really beautiful materials with us.  It can be discouraging to pair the right materials with the perfect layout and design for the installation and then remember you will have outlets and switches interrupting that great look. This solution has become very popular for many of our remodel projects…

outlet underneath kitchen cabinetThe underside of a standard kitchen wall cabinet is constructed with the “floor” of the cabinet recessed up from the surrounding sides of the unit. This recess area is great to conceal under-cabinet lighting but can also be used other ways. When placed near the back of this recessed area, an outlet or even switch can be installed and stay fairly concealed from eye-level when viewed from across the room. This keeps electrical receptacles from crowding the beautiful backsplash area.

cat_photobombThe new kitchen cabinets include great storage spaces like the all-wood susan in the corner you can see in action over on our YouTube channel here (note the curious cat in the last frame of the video). Speaking of curious cats, it seemed like every time I opened a cabinet to snap a photo they wanted to model the cabinet. You will notice when we post the full album of photos to our Houzz.com profile that about 70% of the photos have a cat in them. If we know anything about the internet it is that the world doesn’t mind a good cat video or photo so about halfway through the photo shoot I just stopped asking them to move out of the way and let them show me around. I think they thought they had invented a new game called “hey climb in here!”

kitchen_davenportIt should also be mentioned that the kitchen is not the only work that was completed as a part of this remodel project. The crew from Durian Builders also removed part of a wall and we even replaced the back patio doorway to the deck. Flooring and trim was installed and some work was done in the adjacent Laundry Room as well.

Durian_BuildersThe original kitchen included a wall that blocked access to the Dining Room behind it. The before photo inset here shows that the wall was very much a part of this new space and opening it is into the rest of the home was a huge part of making this new space even more accessible and enjoyable.
