Blue Grass, IA- Go Brighter For Big Results!

Many times it is the changes in finishes that can make the largest impact on a space. Combine that with a few layout adjustments and additions and you get this week’s featured kitchen remodel tour in Blue Grass, IA. A U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula is extended and made brighter and for big results! Let’s begin with how we “extended” the space and still kept the kitchen footprint the same. A section of wall between the kitchen and the casual dining area was previously used to house a china hutch area.
Kitchen before and after. | VillageHomeStores.com

The available hutch area wall has become absorbed into the cabinetry footprint in the new layout. This change plus a shift from medium oak cabinets to a bright, painted look has resulted in a larger look and a bright new space. A peninsula has been installed again to divide the kitchen from the casual dining table but no upper peninsula cabinets were included.

New cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the Legacy doorstyle and Birch wood finished with the “Oyster” paint. The Legacy door is one of our most popular styles from this cabinetry line. It is such a great detailed door without being ornate or over-the-top. The details are found in the rails and stiles of the door and a flat-panel center keeps the look from becoming heavy or overly Traditional.
Ogee edge profile on quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

Engineered Quartz counters from our Klondike line in a color called “Tundra” have been installed. The decorative “Ogee” edge profile on the tops add an extra detail as the light highlights the waterfalling polished stone edge. This color is a fantastic neutral choice for quartz counters. It combines bright whites, soft grays, and the perfect mix of charcoal and black to blend the cabinets, hardware, and even Stainless Steel appliances together perfectly. Let’s take a look around the entire new kitchen:

New Hickory hardwood from our Somerset line has been installed throughout. The light wood tone is named “Moonlight” and it is the perfect finish to be paired with the soft, warm grays included throughout the new kitchen. As mentioned before, a new hutch area has been installed in the same doorstyle as the kitchen cabinetry. Including details like an arched toespace valance and adding interior lighting with glass doors to the cabinet help achieve a furniture look. The wall cabinetry in this section also extends all the way down to the quartz tops.

Our low-voltage Diode LED lighting system is the perfect choice for an area like this. These lights can be dimmed and left on as much as desired using minimal energy. Learn more about this system in a previous post here on the blog. The perfect ambient light when entertaining and even a nightlight in the evening. A new appliance package from KitchenAid® has been included in the new kitchen. KitchenAid® offers appliances with professional-inspired styles including incredible features and function.

A 30″ wide Combination Microwave and Wall Oven is full of incredible features like Even-Heat™ True Convection in the lower oven for consistent baking temperatures and faster preheat times. The Microwave above also includes convection features allowing a secondary baking/cooking option and qualifying this model as a double oven. Next to that wall oven unit is a tall pantry cabinet fit with 5 adjustable slide-out shelves. Slide-out shelves from Koch Cabinetry are able to be adjusted in location to fit your own storage needs.

Turning the corner in the new kitchen we find the new cooktop area. Cooktops can be installed in a number of different cabinets. This kitchen includes a “reversed drawer” cabinet that moves the shallow top drawer down to the bottom of the cabinet. That leaves the top section of the cabinet available for the cooktop components and power source connections. The bottom drawer here is perfect for bakeware or pots and pans lids.

The new 30″ electric cooktop includes tap-touch controls and a very versatile 4-element layout. One of the cooking elements is a triple-ring space offering a 12″, 9″, and 6″ element all in one convenient front  location. This gives you many options for cookware all in the same location. Stainless Steel trim helps compliment the cooktop with the rest of the new appliance package.

The backsplash tile is one of our favorite parts of the new kitchen! This glass 3″ x 6″ subway tile from our Florstar Interceramic line has been installed in a herringbone pattern. The tile color is named “Shimmer Storm” and the finished look is perfect with the quartz counters.

Pewter is a wonderful finish to pair with Stainless appliances in a Traditional style kitchen. The look of these “Merrick” style handles is just as though a highlight of black accent has been applied to a Stainless finish. In place of a Stainless sink, a granite composite sink in a “Metallic Gray” color has been undermounted to the tops.

tiled_bathroomThe variety of tones and textures in the tiled shower make for an interesting look and the Oil-Rubbed Bronze shower entry is a bold contrast to the bright tile work within. The plumbing fixtures for this Master Bath are also in the ORB finish. This high contrast helps to create a dramatic look in the space. In place of the expected 12″ x 12″ wall tile, a 10″ x 14″ wall tile is used. This modern size of a traditional style adds interest and a current look to the beige space. an accent tile with a warm glass tile and basket weave pattern is banded around the tiled shower space.

A corner bench has been installed in the tiled shower as well as a tiled in niche area for shower toiletries. Discuss these options with your designer and tile salesperson in the early stages of your selections. That way you have plenty of time to decide on location and accent tile designs.corner_bench

The vanity tops are from our Onyx Collection line of Cultured Marble vanity tops. This product comes in a variety of colors and can be ordered in any size and configuration you can dream up. Cultured Marble is a fantastic choice for a bathroom top because you are able to choose from many stylish bowl shape options. Read more about this product at this past blog post. This solid white bowl  in the “Iceburg” faux granite pattern top gives the illusion of an undermounted bowl.onyxtop

It seems like you can never have enough storage in a Master Bathroom space, or any bathroom space for that matter. The wall space above your stool cab be a great space to utilize when more storage is needed. Toilet topper cabinets can be ordered in many sizes and styles to match your bathroom cabinetry. Many times an open shelf or towel bar below the topper is included in the design.

Atkinson, IL- Rustic Meets Traditional

The right design and materials in the perfect setting. It’s a winning look! Our design sales staff from Village home stores teamed up to create a Traditional kitchen at this Evergreen Custom Home built in Atkinson, IL.  Rustic selections refined into a functional design with countrywide views out every window.
Rustic Traditional kitchen design. | VillageHomeStores.com

Cherry cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Charleston” doorstyle and “Sienna” finish paired with a Maytag® suite of Stainless Steel appliances. Granite countertops add rustic drama to the space. The “Desert Dream” stone is full of incredible veining and character. As you make your way around the batwing-shaped island tops they change from dark black to tans and earth tones then back to black again. We imagine it will be quite easy to sit down with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and get lost in your own imagination just staring at the natural beauty of this granite.
Maytag French Door Refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com

Combination Microwave and Wall Oven:

This wall is also home to a Maytag® 30″ wide combination wall oven and microwave unit. At first glance you may think it is simply a double oven unit…. you are almost correct! By including the microwave into the wall oven area of a design you free up your options for the overall design of your kitchen. If your design allows it, a combination wall oven can give you a great location for the microwave and also instantly bump the overall look of your kitchen into a more customized category. Maytag microwave wall oven combination. | VillageHomeStores.comconvection_microwaveNobody is thrilled about including a microwave as an appliance focal point of a kitchen design. This is why normally we try to “hide” it or build a microwave into an island base cabinet. Even concealing the unit behind doors has become common. If space is limited, microwave hoods are a wonderful space-saving solution. If your design can accommodate a wall oven, consider a combination unit with a drop-down door microwave. Many of these models can be upgraded to include convection features in the microwave oven cavity. This allows you to have a secondary oven when needed.

Slide In Gas Range:

The secondary oven for this kitchen can be found in the island directly across from this wall oven unit. Maytag®’s slide in gas range with EvenAir™ true convection uses a powerful heating element and a sturdy fan to circulate even temperatures for more consistent roasting and baking within the 5.8 cu. ft. interior. pull out spice rack. | VillageHomeStores.com

Five burners in the gas cooktop rest under full-width cast iron grates. It is so easy to picture multiple users at work in this kitchen design. This model also includes a warming drawer below the oven. This kitchen has a fantastic functional layout with plenty of prep and cooking areas available. A pullout spice rack is right within reach to the right of this slide in unit.

Unique Storage Cabinets:

sandwich center cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.comThis kitchen includes two other unique storage solution cabinets that are worth a mention. The first cabinet is shown on the right and it goes by many names in the industry. With a unique cabinet layout including two small drawers, a bread box, cutting board, and cabinet with slide-out tray this can truly be put to many uses. A “Sandwich-Center” or perhaps a designated snack zone for children? Do you have limited space in a bar or island? This might be a great option to make the most of your space. Press play below to watch this cabinet come to life and imagine the possibilities of including this cabinet option in your own design.

The other unique storage cabinet included in the perimeter of this kitchen is a stand-mixer lift insert. Nice stand mixers can be such a great looking small appliance that many times customers want to have them on the countertops as a part of the finished look. Not everyone wants to keep theirs within eyesight when not in use. Have you ever had the opportunity to try and move one of these mixers from one corner of a kitchen to another? They aren’t exactly lightweight. Press play below to watch how an insert for your mixer can keep it within reach but out of site when not needed.

The variety of textures and materials used in this beautiful kitchen make it hard to decide which makes the largest impact. If you are here in person you would most certainly agree it is the hardwood flooring. Even with a kitchen full of this much cabinetry, the wood floors draw your eye immediately. acacia hardwood floors. | VillageHomeStores.comHand-scraped “Acacia” (Asian Walnut) hardwood in random widths has been installed in the “Saddleback” finish. With a variety of wood tones found within the surface, it is the perfect compliment to the more controlled woodtone of the medium cherry finish found on the kitchen cabinetry.  We can’t possibly mention the word “texture” and not give you a closer look at the kitchen backsplash at this home.Mosaic strip tile. | VillageHomeStores, com

Pietra art stone in a strip mosaic has been installed from Florida Tile’s “Picasso” series. This tile makes a huge impact when you first see it…then seeing it illuminated by the Diode LED lighting and reflected onto the stone counters you get to fall in love with it over and over. Also reflected in the counterops are the unique pendant lights that hang above the island.Kitchen lighting. | VillageHomeStores.com

pendantThese unique pendants by ELK Lighting are from the perfectly named “Watersphere” collection. The “Smoke” finish to the water glass creates a hammered look to the globes. When we visited this kitchen to photograph the space, the owners pointed out the unique patterns that form on the ceiling above the pendants (see image above).  Rustic style can still look refined and controlled when the right materials are used. Texture is where you get a Rustic impact and texture is not only something found in reclaimed barnwood,  The glass in these pendants, the hand-scraped wood flooring, and that incredible tile backsplash all add texture and keep the overall look magazine-ready but not trendy.

Double Up: Corner kitchen sink. | VillageHomeStores.com

This kitchen includes a corner sink layout to grant the user access to the countryside views and maximum natural light during the day. Note the eyebrow arch at the front and back of the sink divider. This design detail was executed and installed by our granite fabricators. The small button sitting flush with the counter on the left corner of the sink is to operate the garbage disposal.

Bar sink in island. | VillageHomeStores.comA second sink can be found across the kitchen in the island. When designing a large kitchen that may be used by many people both for prep and entertaining, a second sink is a great idea. This bar sink is accessible for the entire front half of the new kitchen. A pull-out sprayer is also included in the faucet making it a great secondary area for clean up. The island itself is so large and right at the entrance to the kitchen. The bar-height top on the island is where many of the guests will be found when entertaining. A bar sink like this can be great to fill up with ice and have beverages out and ready to grab. Sinks aren’t the only thing duplicated in this kitchen…Danby beverage cooler. | VillageHomeStores.com

A glass-front beverage cooler is also located in the kitchen island. With plenty of shelf space for wine, soda, juice and beers in this cooler, the main refrigerator isn’t over crowded. The glass-front on  the cooler also makes “way-finding” easier to a guest. Let a guest know they are welcome to “grab a beverage from the island” and they can easily find their way.Desert Dream granite counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

Speaking is islands, let’s address the fact that this design includes two of those as well!. The larger island on the perimeter of the design helps establish the “end” of the kitchen in relation to the great room it sits in. Because of this location and the size of the island, it is easy to forget that it even is one at all. The rectangle island in the center of the space helps give the main kitchen area a great landing space right at the center of the cooking zone of the design. Two islands in a kitchen design. | VillageHomeStores.com

The smaller island in the center of the kitchen is fit with a contrasting granite top. An “Absolute Black” granite top is polished and has a standard “Eased” edge applied. We love the way this polished dark stone reflects the rest of the kitchen back at any visitor as they walk by it. See the full album of nearly 40 photos from this project here on our Houzz.com page. Geneseo, IL- Tailor-Made and Transitional

Take a look at any magazine cover or browse kitchen ideas online and you will discover very quickly that A white painted kitchen is still the current look. Our design sales staff from Village home stores teamed up to create a magazine-ready finished look at this Hazelwood Homes Inc. home built in Geneseo, IL. White painted kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comPainted “Oyster” Maple cabinetry in the “Savannah” door from our Koch Classic line is paired with a KitchenAid Stainless Steel appliance package. Warm and full of a variety of wood tones, this Hickory hardwood flooring from Sommerset’s “Character Collection” anchors the look in the “Saddle” finish. lightingPainted cabinetry and selections like these Kichler pendant light fixtures above the island help keep the space light and airy. This is a surprising success considering how many large cabinets that have been included in the design. In new kitchens we have began to expect to see a refrigerator surrounded with panels and cabinetry that stretches to the ceiling. Kitchen_design

Tall pantry cabinets and wall ovens are becoming more commonplace in kitchen designs that have the space allowance for them. This kitchen is in a new construction project, so space was available for whatever layout options the new homeowners were wanting.

Tailor-made Tall Pantry Cabinets

The layout of the two tall units on the hood wall was arranged by “stacking” varied styles and sizes of wall cabinets in place. Within the Koch Classic line, our kitchen designers are able to work with the factory to then build these units as a single item in place of shipping them all individually.
main_kitchen2

cabinetInstallers certainly would prefer to work with a single cabinet in place of four, but we admit this cabinet was built with the finished look in mind. The true motivation for having these tall cabinets built as a single unit instead of individual items is to achieve a seamless and customized look. Speaking of custom look, these cabinets are not something you can just walk into a “Big Box” store and purchase. Unique to this kitchen, a combination of doors and drawers surround a double wall oven on one side of the wall, and a full floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinet on the opposite wall.

To mirror the visual “weight” of the double oven cabinet to the left, a tall unit was designed with a versatile storage space within. This tall unit on the end also helps visually cap off the “end” to the kitchen perimeter in the Great Room space.Pocket doors in kitchen cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.com

The center of this tall cabinets space has been fit with “pocket” doors that can roll back into the open void. This space was designed for microwave or television area that could be hidden away behind doors when not in use. Add a slide-out shelf on the bottom of this space and you could even house a roll-out coffee station like this example in Bettendorf, IA.

Custom Wainscot Panels

Another way to give your kitchen or bar area a custom tailor-made look is to have a wainscot panel made to the finished dimensions of your island.

wainscot_panelsA similar look can be achieved with a smooth panel and trim. A true custom wainscot look looks as seamless as possible and the best way to get that look is to have a panel made to fit. Another custom detail can be found where the flooring meets the island. The baseboard molding used to surround this island was not baseboard molding at all. The same “Crown Riser” trim used to achieve the stacked molding look on the wall cabinets was used as a basebord.

crownGreat design is always found in the details. Details like an edge profile that matches exactly on the crown molding, door and drawer edges, and even the baseboards. That is a design detail perfectly planned out. Speaking of details all working together, take a look at this magazine-ready hood area.

At The Center of All Attention…

Located right at the center of all activity is a 36″ wide 5-burner gas cooktop with a 36″ wide chimney-style hood above. Beveled subway tile. | VillageHomeStores.com

This 3-speed canopy hood by KitchenAid is nothing out of the ordinary but when placed in this setting, it steals your attention right away. What is helping grab your attention to look at the hood wall is the backsplash tile found there.

tileWhite subway tile continues to be as popular as white painted kitchens. But we mentioned before to pay attention to the details on this project. Any of the “dream kitchens” you might have saved to Pinterest or Houzz include white subway tile? Revisit some of your favorites to see if that tile is a “beveled” subway tile. How can a long wall of white cabinetry with white tile still seem to have a lot of depth and style? The answer is texture. By using a beveled subway tile in place of a standard 3 x 6 smooth look, shadows are formed on the surface. This adds a tone-on-tone dimensional look to the wall. A range accent section of tile has been added and the same Carrara Marble material used as the island countertop is repeated here. countertops

Cararra Marble was installed as the island countertop in an “Eased” edge profile. Cambria Quartz counters surround the perimeter of the kitchen in the “Dunmore” design.  This Hazelwood Homes Inc. kitchen has all of the details to make it a great finished look. Geneseo, IL- Kitchen Remodel With White Paint and Black Island

gray glazeNot every kitchen we remodel is a totally gutted space during the process. Our latest featured kitchen remodel is a wonderful example of a total transformation without removing any wall soffits or even replacing the flooring.
White kitchen cabinets with gray glaze. | VillageHomeStores.com

If it isn’t broke…well you know where we are headed. Many times your brand new dream kitchen isn’t about a re-worked design, it is about updates. In this Geneseo, IL home the original L-shaped kitchen layout and appliance locations already worked well for the homeowners. Nothing changed in location in the new kitchen from the original. While the layout didn’t change much, the new kitchen installed is quite an upgrade from the original.

before1

The original Oak cabinetry and laminate counters came from our store years ago when the home was built. Below is a shot of the project in progress. The new island will be located in the same location but will be slightly larger. Also getting an upgrade in size are all of the wall cabinets in the new kitchen. You can see that the new cabinets will stretch all of the way to the ceiling once the crown molding is installed.
during1

Those new wall cabinets are now taller (more storage) and the doors are a 30/70 style (more stylish). Ordering tall wall cabinets in a “30/70 Split” configuration just refers to the breakdown of the center panels. The top 30% section can make a great location for adding glass to a cabinet door creating a clerestory look.
White kitchen cabinets with gray "Smoke" highlights. | VillageHomeStores.com

kitchen_colorsLook how much brighter and upscale this space is now! Koch painted “White” cabinetry with a “Smoke” highlight have replaced the original Oak cabinets on the perimeter of the kitchen. “Tundra” quartz counters add character but a consistent pattern of colors to blend with the cabinets and new glass subway tiles in a color called “Buff.” Now that the entire kitchen perimeter is much brighter and reaches to the ceiling with the white cabinetry, a bolder island selection was made. To anchor the area visually a “Black” painted cabinet with the same quartz countertop has been installed.
Black kitchen island. | VillageHomeStores.com

Because the kitchen is part of one large open concept that includes the Dining and Living Rooms, the island panel treatment needed to look great. This kitchen island can be seen from many areas of the home. Now that it is this dark finish, your eye is naturally drawn to this island. In place of a smooth painted panel, beadboard has been installed on the back side that faces the Living Room.

Glass subway tile ideas for the kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comThe customer selected stools with a bold red leather and we love how they pop out against the painted paneling. The new glass tile backsplash is a classic and neutral selection. Knowing how to “end” or “cap off” a backsplash tile can be difficult. Our expert sales staff works closely with the installers for your project to design the layout of your project to be sure all materials are on hand for installation and the finished results are just right. For this application, in place of a bullnose or metal “schluter strip” a pencil rail was used. This thin strip of matching glass tile covers the exposed/cut ends of the tiles and helps create a clean end to the backsplash.
Stainless Steel undermount kitchen sink. | VillageHomeStores.com

One of the best features of installing a quartz countertop is replacing your sink with an under-mounted model. Under-mount sinks make cleaning up a breeze. Wipe messes and even spills right into the sink with no sink ridge or edge to block you from that clean swipe. Of course, the storage was upgraded in the cabinets that replaced the original kitchen.
Corner kitchen lazy susan cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.com

A corner lazy susan cabinet was installed in the base cabinetry. This particular susan cabinet has a fixed center shelf with rotating susans mounted onto the shelf and lower floor of the cabinet. What does this mean for the owners? No lost items falling off into the back corner.
Corner lazy susan wall cabinet in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The corner wall cabinet above also is fit with a lazy susan insert. Nothing is out of reach in this cabinet. The kitchen appliances remained in the original locations. The new kitchen design does allow added space surrounding the existing refrigerator for a larger model when they are ready to replace this unit.

We love how this Geneseo kitchen was totally transformed just by upgrading to new materials. This project was completed using the Complete Project Management Program here at Village Home Stores. Rock Island Bath Remodel: A Snowy Winter Palette

cambria_quartz_rock_islandWith our very first snowstorm of 2015 on the way to the area, we thought what better project feature to “snow” you in with than this Rock Island, IL bathroom remodel. We absolutely love the finishes this customer selected from our store to create an upscale look with touches of texture and sparkle we can’t wait for you to see.snow color palette | VillageHomeStores.com

Painted white cabinetry from our Koch line is accented with a grey “Smoke” glaze on all of the vanity edges. Large gray 12″ x 24″ floor tiles create the perfect base for the new bathroom. Polished chrome fixtures like the Delta “Vera” series faucets and shower fixtures are very sleek. The tile in the walk-in shower is what truly steals the show! Elongated glass subway tiles 4″ x 12″ in size are accented with waterfalling mosaics from Glazzio.shower

While the wall tiles look smooth and sleek, the floor of this custom shower has an added texture that does bring the outdoors in. Black “pebble” tiles from our Florida Tile line are grouted in place and give a foot massage to bare feet every time you use the shower.

cambria_whitney

You know that perfect sparkle of fresh snow? These Cambria Quartz “Whitney” counters have that same glimmer when the light hits them. That same glimmer can be found in the crystal-filled wall sconces from Golden Lighting. The “Alston Place” series is available in many different fixture configurations from this single sconce to large chandeliers. smoke_glaze

The double-bowl vanity is full of storage and that “Smoke” glaze really does highlight the details and compliment the other finishes in the bathroom. The shower itself was a unique space. originally tiled with a single size of powder blue ceramic, the new design is a stylish upgrade.beforeshower

When installing a custom-tiled shower, we are able to add storage niches and shelves and benches like the one shown here below. This new shower area was waterproofed and a custom wall niche and corner bench was installed. Pebble tile on base of shower floor. | VillageHomeStores.com

East Moline Remodel: Hickory Steals The Show!

headerAre you looking to make a warm wood selection that can help add a lot of character to your kitchen? Do you have Oak trim and doors throughout your interior but don’t want to go “Oak Overboard” with an entire kitchen to match?  Have you considered Hickory as a wood species? koch hickory sienna

This Hickory kitchen is in the Koch finish “Sienna” which is a light-medium finish option. The perfect compliment to Oak, Hickory is a wonderful option that can look right at home with other open-grained wood species. According to the American Hardwood Information Center, Hickory is ranked extremely high for hardness (harder than both White and Red Oak).  The rich woodgrain of this Hickory kitchen is what grabs your attention right away when you enter this remodeled East Moline, IL kitchen. Just look at the variation from panel to panel!kitchen remodel East Moline

This kitchen began much darker and more crowded. The original Maple cabinetry included a peninsula that divided the kitchen from the nearby dining area. Soffits were built above this original cabinetry to spread the gap between the ceiling and the cabinetry.kitchenbefore

base_angled_endFor an updated look, our designer at Village Home Stores first began with an update to the layout. Removing the soffits above and the peninsula area gives the kitchen (and those using it) a much more open feel. Angling the end of the wall and base cabinetry at the end of the sink wall makes for a nice smooth transition into the dining space. Many times you can add these angled cabinets as an extension to your kitchen and gain extra storage space.

Updating the cabinet layout also gave the opportunity to update the kitchen appliances and their configuration. New Stainless Steel appliances by Whirlpool were included from Village Home Stores. Not just the finish was updated, the cooking zone of the kitchen now has a whole new look. The original range was a “drop-in” model. dropin_range

The new range stayed in the same general area but was replaced with a freestanding Stainless Steel model and a microwave hood above. A microwave hood can be such a space-saving solution for kitchens. Replacing the range hood with a microwave hood frees up more countertop space for the new kitchen. kitchen remodel East MolineThe microwave wasn’t the only thing that found a new “home”, with the addition of a 24″ deep pantry cabinet and a deep cabinet above the refrigerator, all of the small appliances now have a place to be stored. Hickory can be ordered as you see here or using a “rustic” or “knotty” selection of materials. We have examples and samples of all of the many options you have in Hickory available from multiple cabinetry lines.formica labrador granite

The countertop selection for this project is also a great choice. Formica’s “Labrador Granite” color is a dark neutral that pairs well with many woods.  These dark countertops also help compliment the Oil-Rubbed Bronze hardware selection for the new kitchen. We didn’t just replace the cabinets, counters and appliances, we also updated a pantry doorway in the space.millwork

This update helps the opposite end of this kitchen to seem more included in the new kitchen design. As we mentioned earlier, Hickory marries perfectly with Oak. This closet door is a fantastic example of that. Shaker-paneled doors (in Oak) have been stained to match the new Hickory kitchen. New flooring was also installed throughout the kitchen and dining area to help the entire space have a new look. luxury vinyl tile by Tarkett

Luxury Vinyl Tile, or “LVT” from our Tarkett line was installed in a 12″ x 12″ size. LVT can be installed grouted or un-grouted. This customer choose the grouted look for their “Summit Slate-Gold” tile.  The kitchen and dining room windows were also replaced during the remodel. This is commonly one of the roadblocks for many homeowners when they start to try and manage their own remodel project. Collecting and coordinating estimates and schedules and having crews arrive in the right order can be stressful. tilt out tray for cabinets

There are always ways to make the most of your space. Be sure to ask your kitchen designer at Village Home Stores to include these options. A tilt-out tray below the sink is a great way to keep sponges and rags out of sight. What else would you prefer to keep out of sight? How about that pile or mail, bills, or other paper items? Including a desk or a drop-zone in your design can be a great way to handle that.hickory cabinets

Galva Remodel: Great Storage Made Stylish

Kitchen design. | VillageHomeStores.comGreat storage doesn’t have to be boring or sterile looking. This Galva kitchen is proof that great storage can be stylish, warm and inviting. Rustic Beech cabinetry and Silestone Quartz countertops make a stylish first impression and what hides inside of these cabinets gives amazing function to the space.Rustic Beech kitchen remodel in Galva, IL. | Village Home Stores

Updated materials and up-to-date storage solutions fill this new kitchen design. No extensive wall-work or major structural changes were made to the room. A similar layout to the original kitchen was recreated with better storage and updated materials in mind. before

Dated soffits above were removed and by keeping a similar layout to the original design, all of the current hook ups for the appliances were able to be used. An L-shaped layout with a peninsula extending from the back door entry provides plenty of countertop space. Here is a birdseye view of the new kitchen design.Kitchen design. | VillageHomeStores.com

With limited space near the sink, the dishwasher needs to be located in another area. Surrounded by base cabinets in the peninsula, the dishwasher is still within reach of a user loading from the sink. It is also important to note when looking at this layout from above that appliance doors need to have a clearance to openAllow space for dishwasher door to be open.. | VillageHomeStores.com

The location of this peninsula allows for the dishwasher door to be open and just enough room to make your way around the open door. The same can be said about the oven door right across from the dishwasher. pull-out trash in kitchen peninsula. | VillageHomeStores.comThe peninsula cabinets surrounding the dishwasher offer great storage within. A double-bin pullout trash cabinet is located to the right of the dishwasher and sliding shelves inside of the base cabinetry are adjustable to accommodate anything you would want to fit within the 24″ deep space inside. Having this long area of countertop right in the center of the new kitchen is absolutely perfect. This countertop is nothing you have to be careful with either. Silestone Quartz is a man-made engineered material that is ideal for busy kitchens and is even used in commercial kitchens. It is extremely durable and completely non-porous. Imagine how great this counter will be for rolling out Christmas cookies to cut and bake!Beaded back panel in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The back panel of this peninsula is a “beaded” or “beadboard” look. This gives the “Chocolate” accent glaze on the “Briarwood” finish a chance to stand out and add some interest to the view into the kitchen from the front entry. Luxury Vinyl Tile. | VillageHomeStores.comAnother important change to mention is the original kitchen had carpet located on the floor. New Luxury Vinyl Tile, or “LVT” has been installed with a grouted look. Still softer and warmer than ceramic tile, this material will be far easier to keep clean in the new kitchen. The refrigerator is located in the same area but has been given a more built-in appearance. With the refrigerator in clear view of both entrances into the kitchen, the designer from Village Home Stores didn’t want such a large appliance to distract from the amazing overall design. Refrigerator end panel full-depth. | VillageHomeStores.com

Refrigerator end panels were installed surrounding the new unit and capping off a deep wall cabinet above. The space allowance is now ideal for current refrigerator dimensions including height and depth. It might look like this is a counter-depth refrigerator but this is in fact a standard depth model. To achieve this look the end panels were ordered at a deeper dimension. You can notice the change in depth if you look at the base cabinets and counter to the left. Corner lazy Susan cabinet in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comWe mentioned this kitchen is full of great storage and of course any corner of a kitchen design needs to be used to its fullest potential. The easiest way to achieve full access to your corner space above and below your counter space is with Lazy Susan inserts. With the soffits above now removed, this allowed for the opportunity to add some style to the corner by making the upper cabinet taller and deeper. The original kitchen had a painted backsplash surface. The new look includes a tiled backsplash using an elongated field tile with glass “Tigereye” accents inserted. The tile is a perfect compliment to the Oil-Rubbed Bronze finishes throughout the new kitchen as well as the accent glaze on the cabinetry. Note the use of Bronze switchplate covers on the receptacles:Tile backsplash. | VillageHomeStores.com

This may seem like a silly thing to point out but imagine if bright white plates were used. That would distract instead of compliment the overall look. Above the original kitchen sink and below the drop-down soffit was a wood valance. Valances still continue to be a great way to complete an area surrounding a window. Our carpenters worked with the homeowner to create a valance-like installation above the window as a way to bridge the wall cabinets surrounding it.Use crown molding to create a valance look. | VillageHomeStores.com

The cabinet crown molding carries your eye across the window and helps anchor the wall cabinets above together. With limited space in the existing kitchen it can be a challenge to have enough pantry storage space. Our cabinet lines do offer tall pantry cabinets beginning as narrow as 9″ wide. The area to the left of the range is closer to 18″ wide and that would still make for a usable pantry cabinet but we came up with a different solution:Pantry storage ideas for the kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A base cabinet below with four adjustable sliding shelves provides 24″ deep storage space to move into. Four shelf spaces in the 12″ deep wall cabinet above can be used in a number of ways as well. The addition of a third cabinet here gives a visually full look to the space from floor to ceiling but the added bonus of counter space right in the center of the pantry area. What’s not to love about a kitchen made better? We thank this Galva, IL family for allowing us to help update their kitchen and also for letting us show you around.Village Home Stores 309.944.1344

Cambridge Remodel: Updated Rustic Traditions

rustic_kitchenThe term “Rustic Transitional” is becoming more and more common all across the home interiors industry. This featured project in Cambridge, IL is a wonderful example of of Rustic Transitional materials and style. The story to be told however, is more traditional in nature.

Rustic modern kitchen remodeled by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.comThis home has a rich history with the current residents. Like many of the many homes in rural Henry County, this farmhouse has been in the family for many years. It was the home of the current resident’s grandfather. Years and years of traditions and memories have already taken place here.

beforeThe new kitchen had to be a way to update the space with respect to the past (and the family home) while adding modern elements for new memories to be made. The before photo shows that over time there had been updates and changes made to the kitchen to keep it usable and functional. This time the space was going to need an entirely fresh start.

duringThe original layout created a narrow, cramped space and limited the size and location or a refrigerator. Durian Construction began demo by removing soffits and two walls that chopped up the space. A new 1/2 wall was built to open up the kitchen into the front room and accommodate a new cabinet layout. The existing hardwood was patched with spare flooring to give a seamless look to the two areas without a transition in the floor needed.

kitchen_designThe refrigerator is now centrally located in the traffic paths of the design. Full access is available to many users from any entrance to the new kitchen. The half-wall dividing the kitchen from the front room runs parallel to a large new island in the center of the design.

Maytag french door refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.comThe new design allows for a more current standard-sized refrigerator to fit the lifestyle of this busy family.  This new suite of appliances by Maytag includes a 4-door refrigerator and a double oven freestanding gas range with microwave hood above.

Stainless Steel appliances bring an updated look to the kitchen but other materials and finishes selected lend a more rustic look. The large kitchen island has been installed in a distressed black painted finish. That finish paired with a single-level design helps the island look more like a large farmhouse table or furniture piece instead of a modern kitchen island.

black island in white kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comThe main perimeter is this new kitchen is a painted “Pearl” finish from our Koch Classic line. The square raised-panel doors are a common “Transitional” choice but if you look closer the wood species selected gives the main kitchen a “rustic” touch.

Farmhouse sink in white kitchen with black island. | VillageHomeStores.comOne of the most exciting areas to include a “Rustic Transitional” style into your kitchen is in your hardware selections. Cabinet hardware, plumbing fixtures, and lighting all can be modern interpretations of old rustic farmhouse charm.  A farmhouse sink (shown above) is always a fantastic choice when looking for a “Rustic Transitional” look. Your lighting is another huge opportunity to really showcase the style of your space.

Edison lamp pendant. | VillageHomeStores.comFor this Cambridge, IL kitchen remodel the “Brinley” series from our Kichler line was used. The visible “Edison” style filament in the bulb is such an interesting nod to the past. The suggestion of a bundle of canning jars with this lighting collection makes it a perfect choice for this new farmhouse kitchen already rich with memories and traditions. Our expert lighting staff can help you select the perfect lights for your project. For this project there was no need to find a light that complimented the island fixtures because a single “Brinley” pendant was available and already the perfect choice.

Bettendorf Remodel: Upgraded and Upscale

titleThis kitchen remodel in Bettendorf, Iowa is a great example of how you can get your dream kitchen while being budget-conscious.  This amazing transformation came about by making smart choices on where to make upgrades within the project. Take a look at where this kitchen began before you see the finished look.

before2Rich dark cabinetry, quartz countertops, Stainless Steel appliances, an undermounted sink it is all here! While getting your dream kitchen may be something you do once in a lifetime, that doesn’t mean that you have to keep that project off in the distance.java_finish

Our designer from Village Home Stores worked closely with these customer to help them stay within their budget and select the perfect materials and make upgrades in the right places to end up with this upscale look.pantry

Before we look at some of those upgrades lets take a look at the structural changes made to this kitchen. The original kitchen included a wall of cabinetry that surrounded a range and hood unit. This wall divided the kitchen from the Living Room area.

kitchen remodel before and after. | VillageHomeStores.comWe began by opening up this wall to include the new kitchen with the living areas of the home. Removing this wall and all of the soffits above made such a huge difference in the finished kitchen. The birdseye view of the new kitchen design (below) shows how a new bar-height top fits into the newly opened kitchen plan. birdseye_view

Relocating the sink and range locations represented some of the design choices made to get the best working layout for the now open room. Keeping appliances in their original locations can help when you are trying to keep within a project budget. But this is one design upgrade that was worth it. Now that this kitchen opens up into this great room there is no better place for the sink than right here. Dark Java stained kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

Moving the kitchen sink to this new spot facing the guest areas of the home was a great choice. Let’s now take a look at some of the amazing upgrades made to get this upscale look beginning with this sink.black_sink

An undermounted sink is such a desirable element of a kitchen. If you have ever had one I am sure you would not be easily convinced to go back to a drop-in style. Wiping the counters clean with a single swipe into the sink is a huge benefit. The kitchen sink happens to be an Elkay composite granite sink so it is just as durable as it is beautiful. This matte-finished black sink is mounted to beautiful new counters.quartz

Quartz countertops in a kitchen we are boasting is budget-conscious?!? Yes! We currently have a series of Quartz countertops at an incredible price in your choice of 9 colors including this popular “Tundra” color. Let us price this Quartz for your project. You will be pleasantly surprised by the numbers you will see especially if you have been shopping high-end laminate options or solid-surfaces. Before we get to the cabinetry let us look down to the flooring for another upgrade made that was no extra cost at all.

A 1/4 turn tile pattern for your kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comThis Luxury Vinyl Tile, or “LVT” as we call it, has been installed in a 1/4 turn pattern. A basic pattern would have also looked great with this “Linea” Cream Mannington LVT, but this extra detail sets it off. The pattern of the LVT and the direction changes create a basketweave look and add an eyecatching result with no extra material required. Read more about LVT in this past blog post.

Microwave cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.comSoft-close hinges. | VillageHomeStores.comCabinetry represents such a significant portion of any kitchen project. Our Koch Express line was selected for this project. The “Lexington” doorstyle in the rich Birch “Java” finish has been upgraded with soft-close, dovetailed drawers and even soft-close hinges on the doors.

Our Koch Express line can also be paired with certain pieces from our Koch Classic line.  That is how the angled end cabinet upgrade was made to the end of this wall of cabinetry.  This angled look gives a visual upgrade from the expected square ends available from Koch Express.

Angled end cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.comThe glass tile backsplash was also a beautiful material selection for the kitchen.
