Prophetstown, IL Remodel – Pearl Painted Cabinets and Quartz Counters

We recently remodeled a Prophetstown, IL kitchen to bring the finishes and the layout up to date. Sometime the basic footprint of a kitchen design is a usable amount of space, but a few location adjustments can make a huge difference on the function of that space.
before

The “Before” of this project included medium stained cabinetry, soffits, and laminate counters with a drop in sink. The new look is bright and airy. Painted cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the Prairie doorstyle has been painted in the Pearl finish with an Umber highlight applied to accent the edges. The kitchen sink has been moved to the window wall to allow the range and hood to be the focal point of the new layout.

Soffits were removed and the new wall cabinetry stretched all the way to the ceiling. If you think that “floating shelves” is a term reserved for Modern or Contemporary styled spaces, think again! Two floating shelves cap off the end of this run of wall cabinets. Hanging above the peninsula top below, these shelves are a fantastic updated look. They can be styled all through the year just as you would a glass-door cabinet.

Gorgeous glass subway tile from our Interceramic line has been installed from their Interglass Shimmer series in the “Bronze” color. A standard brick lay pattern for the main backsplash is highlighted above the range with a decorative area of the same tile installed in a herringbone pattern.

This shimmering backsplash tile sits atop new Engineered Quartz counters from Cambria. The Lincolnshire design offers rich earthtones in a pattern that resembles a natural granite look. The look of a natural stone with all of the benefits of choosing Quartz counters. Quartz is heat resistant, scratch resistant, and maintenance free. These tops will look exactly like this decades from now.

The kitchen peninsula offers an overhang area of Cambria with seating for two. We love the woven counter-height stools selected for the space. Decorative corbels and custom applied-panels complete the peninsula design.

A counter-depth french door refrigerator by Whirlpool® is given a true built-in look with surrounding 24″ deep pantry cabinets. A standard-depth model would project out into this high-traffic area of the layout. This counter-depth model sits back more flush with the surrounding cabinets and looks great!

Each pantry is fit with full-depth shelving. The right pantry includes slideout shelves. This shelving system is adjustable so that you can arrange to store any height of items within. Discuss with your kitchen designer at Village Home Stores early on if there are any uniquely sized items or small appliances you wish you had a designated location for. Better to designate the perfect space for an item ahead of time than to clutter up your brand new kitchen counters!

Microwave hoods are great, but did you know that microwaves can be off the counter without needing to be located above a range? This kitchen includes Sharp® ‘s over-the-counter microwave model. This unit is designed to be installed below a wall cabinet but above a countertop space:

Believe it or not, Lazy Susan cabinets come in a wide variety of options. This kitchen includes a Lazy Susan cabinet configuration that offers you the most shelf space possible. The spinning wood trays are attached to a fixed shelf. This replaces the older “pole” style susan that sometimes came unattached or caused items to fall off in the back of the cabinet to be lost. Now the shelf and floor of the cabinet help keep items undercontrol if they were to fall.

This base cabinet option is known as an Angled Base Corner Cabinet. That means that instead of an L-shaped cabinet with two hinged doors, a single door angles across the front corner. This gives you a full circle susan shelf (and plus more counter space above). We also gave a built-in hutch an update to match the new kitchen:
before-and-after-hutch

This hutch area is located on the wall between the kitchen and casual dining area. Now it looks right at home in the new space. Partial Remodel- How To “Pull Off” Mixing Metals

Three wood finishes, two granite colors, AND four metal finishes? Yes that is correct! Take a look at how amazing everything looks together! Proof that with the right guidance and vision, you can pull off mixing materials like this. The perimeter oak cabinetry is actually original to the kitchen. A peninsula was removed and now a large painted island sits in the center of the kitchen.

A brand new appliance package was purchased from Village Home Stores including A counter-depth refrigerator and dishwasher in KitchenAid’s first-in-the-industry Black Stainless Steel. This uniquely tinted Stainless Steel is sophisticated, stylish, and striking in person. The true Stainless Steel finish wipes clean in seconds and the tinted color even helps reduce the appearance of fingerprints on the panels.

The new kitchen island top is a granite named “Desert Dream” and on perimeter of the kitchen “Astoria” granite has been installed. Both of these natural stones are in a “brushed” finish. Instead of the expected high-polished look granite normally has, the brushed finish gives a unique and warm texture while enhancing the look and feel of the stone. Two stones and two appliance finishes. The refrigerator and range wall is the best example of showcasing the two finishes side-by-side that work perfectly together in the finished look.

A Stainless Steel 30″ wide, front-control slide-in electric range is just inches from the Black Stainless refrigerator. The new distressed painted wood hood above the range and accent tile ties everything together, the look is perfect. A Stainless Steel microwave drawer in the new kitchen island is right across from a Black Stainless dishwasher. That is not all for metal finishes in the new space. Oil-Rubbed Bronze faucets have been paired with Hammered Copper undermount sinks.

The Hammered Copper is not only a great color to add to the mix, the texture is incredible. With views of the countryside out every window, this Hammered Copper adds a rustic touch to the space while the shape and setting keep it formal. The use of a deep farmhouse apron-front model sink is the right choice for this Rustic Traditional look and offers even more of that Hammered surface to show.

An updated look to an existing Oak kitchen. The finishes aren’t the only upgrades included. The appliances selected for this project represent some of the best features available in appliances today. The slide-in range includes convection and steam features in the oven and 5 elements including a warming zone. An internal water dispenser, versatile shelving, plus a three-tiered freezer drawer make this one of the most spacious counter-depth refrigerators you will ever use. This 24″ wide microwave drawer by Sharp has been redesigned to pair more seamlessly with all of our brands. With a tilt-out control panel, there are no handles to match up. Perfect for including in islands or even built-in to a custom bar area, this microwave is one of our top-selling models for both remodels and new homes. Oak crown molding and refrigerator panels were ordered to adapt the existing kitchen to the new design. The new black-painted cabinetry is from our DuraSupreme line and showcases their Heritage paint series. A wood hood above the new range and a large kitchen island are each finished in the “B” color from this series. An “X” back panel design is paired with a beadboard end panel treatment. There is now space for four barstools plus plenty of space for a large dining table area right next to the island.

DuraSupreme’s Heritage paint finishes come in a wide range of color options. From a bright antique white to this black painted look there are so many possibilities. Heritage painted finishes all include distressed features like chipped corners, worn edges, and even “bird-pecking” which are perfect old-world characteristics for the furniture-look island and wood hood installed.

This new kitchen sits on the perfect platform to showcase the complete look. Beautiful new Hickory hardwood floors have been installed throughout the entire great room all the way to the front entrance of the home. This warm Hickory “Tackroom” finished hardwood is from the Chaparal Collection. “Annie” (see below) just loves laying in the sunlight on her new Hallmark floors.

Annie is now pretty much internet-famous thanks to this feature Hallmark Flooring wrote up on her (new floors). All of these finishes together in one space and does it work? ABSOLUTELY! Having a designer on hand to help you select and place your selections keeps your project vision on track and well executed. Your designer at Village Home Stores will have a firm grasp on the overall vision for the finished look and that is a valuable asset.

A new tile backsplash ties all of these selections together perfectly. Matte finish subway tile in a color called “Elemental Tan” plus a Glazzio accent tile from their “Corrugated Scapes” series in the “Ginger Clove” color. A bold band of accent tile spans the entire L-shape and a square field installed above the range completes the look.

This partial kitchen remodel was not all we completed at this home. New flooring was installed in many rooms and two bathrooms were completely made over. See the full album of over 70 photos from these projects here on our houzz page. We also are happy to announce that this kitchen and both bathrooms will be included in an upcoming episode of the Village Home Show. Do you have a project in mind? Geneseo- Brighter and Bolder From Corner to Corner

kitchen remodel quad citiesThis gorgeous kitchen was recently completed as part of our full Project Management Program. We helped this Geneseo couple from start to finish and the end result is beautiful. It will soon be featured on our upcoming television program, The Village Home Show but we wanted to give you a brief tour of some of our favorite parts here on the blog.

before_photoWhile the Before image shown on the right may have a similar layout, there were many changes made to use this space in a whole new way. The soffits up above were removed to make more space for the new cabinets to stretch to the ceiling. Existing hardwood flooring was kept in place and by keeping the same footprint to the new design, there are no gaps in the new space.

kitchen cabinet cornerThe most innovative cabinet of the new space is found tucked into the corner. Just because your kitchen does not have the space to allow a “lazy susan” in the corner of the design does not mean it has to be an un-reachable area. A blind corner cabinet with a pull-out insert can turn an awkward space into an awesome use of space. These half-moon shaped shelves swing out and slide forward to full access of the area.

tile above windowWhat ties the entire look together is the backsplash. This combination of ceramic tile and stainless steel is the perfect choice by these homeowners. Mosaic tiles can become very busy and distracting to an overall look, but this combination uses colors all within the same value of color. Installing it above the sink as well really completes the look as well.

kitchen remodel quad citiesfurniture toeA valance above the sink is expected, but one below the new china hutch really adds a furniture look to that portion of the wall. The “desk” area of the old kitchen is now a built-in china hutch with an appliance garage atop the counter that can keep piles and charging devices out of sight behind doors. Another way to give this area a furniture look is the “buffet” style base cabinet. Notice the two small drawers in the top section.

counterdepth refrigeratorA standard depth refrigerator would look great in this new kitchen but see how this counter depth Whirlpool model sits nearly flush with the surrounding cabinets? A standard depth unit would project almost an added 6″ into the room. Even though this side x side refrigerator is a counter depth model it still boasts 25 cubic ft. of storage space and has exterior ice and water in the door.

back of island cabinetThe back of the dual-height peninsula in the new kitchen has been paneled with a custom look including applied doors. One of these doors is in fact operable making both corners of this narrow u-shaped kitchen fully accessible for storage.

The opposite side of this peninsula is home to a stainless steel dishwasher with an integrated control panel.
