Coal Valley, IL- Black, White, and Gold Kitchen Remodel

So what is black and white and gold all over? This perfectly on-trend kitchen remodel in Coal Valley, IL. A Transitional style space that is tasteful and right on trend! We originally met with this customer about estimating design and materials for her brand new home. Instead she ended up finding a great existing home opportunity in Coal Valley, IL. She then began working with us to remodel this home completely to now reflect her own taste and personality.

The home was in great shape and already had a very functional layout to work with. The 1990’s finishes however, were ready for an update. Medium Oak cabinetry, laminate counters, and beige paint graces every room. Here is a peek at the original kitchen that included a peninsula and white appliances. There was already a space adjacent to the kitchen for a dining area.

This customer worked closely with a team from Village Home Stores and her own contractors to take the 90’s property not only up to date… but magazine cover worthy! When you work with Village Home Stores, part of our process is to present you with full color renderings of your designs. This is our process whether you are building or remodeling. In a remodel of this size, the renderings help to visualize the shift of the entire style of a home. Seeing the vision in a rendering helps out so much! Our experts work with you to make sure the complete design and all the selections within it will work perfectly AND reflect your own tastes. In this case, the tastes of our client were sophisticated and stylish!

Two-tone kitchen design has seen some major shifts over the past few years. Originally, the most comfortable way to two-tone a kitchen design has been to add a second finish to a freestanding kitchen island. A refreshing new approach has been to install a dark base cabinet and a lighter upper cabinet in a design. We see this with darker graphite grays, blacks, and even navy blue.
Black base cabinets and White upper cabinets paired with quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.comPainted black and white cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Savannah” door is complimented with a Cararra Marble backsplash in a herringbone pattern. A single-level island in the center of the design seemed to almost appear to be wrapped in ribbon. That ribboned look is a waterfalling quartz installation. Hanstone quartz “Tranquility” is installed as the island countertop and the perimeter is a solid white “Royale Blanc” design.

With the peninsula now removed, that left plenty of room for a large island to stretch the full length of the kitchen. A Microwave drawer by Sharp® is at the center with a large drawer below. The microwave is surrounded by wide drawer stacks and added storage and a pullout waste basket on the end near the sink.

Cascading/waterfalling your countertops could become the jaw-dropping statement-maker you are looking for! We recently installed our new front desk area to include multiple waterfall counters and all of our showroom guest love the look. See those tops here in a past blog post.

With the quartz counters “wrapping” each end of the island, that doesn’t leave a great space to include an outlet. A large island like this in a great room space demands entertaining guest. Can’t you just picture this place full for a Holiday get-together? Power is needed for small appliances or even charging electronics when working from the island seating. We concealed the outlet right on the end beneath the decorative corner detail. The matte black outlet and cover blend perfectly. The kitchen island seats four and the nearby Dining area can accommodate more formal Dining guests. A 6-light gold orb fixture by Quorum hangs above the large dining table.

Not only did this client have a very clear idea of her own personal style, she was incredibly organized with her inspirations! If you are dreaming of a new kitchen but know it will be a few years down the road, start honing your own tastes and inspirations now! Not only did this client come to us with a contagious enthusiasm, she also came with binders full of ripped out magazine photos, Pinterest boards, and even Houzz ideabooks. The open shelf wall of her design came inspired by an instagram post by Kristin on the Bliss at Home blog.

We think this corner of the kitchen design is such a beautiful way to add a space to personalize and customize the kitchen throughout the year. The Cararra Marble herringbone backsplash tile is installed from countertop to ceiling. This tile from Epic Stone adds texture and detail without being a distraction or too busy. Marble cut into small tiles provides a timeless tone-on-tone look.

The gold shelf brackets are just one of the many gold accents throughout the space. The custom shelves are an Oak wood that has been charred. Charred or blackened wood accents are beginning to become a huge home accessories trend and we love introducing this look into the kitchen. The Japanese charred wood technique is called Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi.

The charred wood compliments the Black painted base cabinets so well and adds another unique texture to the design. The finishes are not the only thing that saw an update. Our adorne® collection of outlets and switches from legrand® add fuction and style to the space. Take a look at this great pop-out outlet below the open shelves.

Power when needed and concealed and stylish when not in use. Plus this single outlet packs a lot of power. This single pop-out includes 4 outlets! A brushed gold kitchen faucet adds another place for that pop of gold accent. This faucet also has a pull-out spray wand.

Selecting a accent color is only half of the process of executing it well. Accenting is all about balancing scale and locations of your colors. This kitchen includes pops of gold found in the lighting, hardware, and accessories. The underside of the kitchen island pendants give a peek-a-boo approach to the accent. These pendants are named “Placuna” and come from our Uttermost line.

Due to the large size of the new kitchen window, a single light wouldn’t seem appropriate. Two 10″ wide Kichler “Maclain” pendants hang framing in the sink area. The same legrand series that makes the pop-out outlet mentioned above also offers a modular undercabinet system. This unique system of lighting, outlets, and electronic docking accessories can be customized and changed to accommodate the kitchen needs.

All of the outlet and USB boxes can be pulled and moved to other locations. There are also bluetooth speaker inserts and accessories like this tablet dock. The look is sleek and best of all?, it allows your backsplash tile to spread the full height without being disrupted or distracted by an outlet. For kitchens including a full-height stone or quartz backsplash this system can really be a fantastic solution!

The painted black cabinets from the bases of the kitchen design are repeated in the taller elements of the kitchen. This looks especially stunning because of the new appliances included from KitchenAid®. A french door counter-depth refrigerator and double wall oven have been built-in to a painted black cabinet surround. The appliances are in the innovative and stylish Black Stainless Steel finish by KitchenAid®. This finish is a true Stainless Steel and the fingerprint-resistant finish creates a matte black look that pairs perfectly with this cabinet choice.

Black Stainless appliances are accented with chrome and Stainless details. This makes them pair well with other metal finishes in a complete design. This kitchen includes a Stainless cooktop and microwave drawer. The kitchen faucet and lighting above the sink are also a brushed golden finish that helps to compliment the stainless texture of the appliances. See another great example of mixed metals including Black Stainless here in a past blog post.

Of course any dream kitchen must include storage wish-list cabinets. Slide-out shelves, post and pans drawers, and a pull-out spice rack are among some of the inserts included in the design. We love how keeping the darker finish on the base cabinets helps to keep the overall space light and airy.

Village Home Stores also offers a full line of custom blinds and shades for your home. This wide new kitchen window has been fit with our Oxford House® “Transitions” shade.  While being operated the wide, horizontal stripes overlap to offer an open or closed look even when the shade is down. The shade is the “Dixie White” finish.

All of this rests on a stunning new Luxury Vinyl Tile (or L.V.T.) from our Fusion Hybrid collection. The gray woodgrain pattern is named “Dutch Pine”. This LVT is installed throughout the great room. See more detailed photos of this kitchen plus some of the other space in this remodeled home here over on our award-winning Houzz page.

When we went to visit this finished kitchen to photograph it we noticed a little dish by the kitchen sink. It has a gold-winged flying pig attached to it. The client quickly said “Oh that? My friends and I always joked I would get the dream kitchen I had been planning in my head for year when pigs fly” Well don’t look now but there is a flying pig in her kitchen because it has happened! Geneseo, IL- 5 Design Upgrades For Your Kitchen

This beautiful Geneseo, IL remodel has a lot to offer in terms of style and impact. As we take a look around we want to share with you 5 great design upgrades included in this tour that helped take this finished space to the next level. Perhaps one of these details might be right for your own kitchen remodel project.
Kitchen before and after. | VillageHomeStores.com

White painted cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line is paired with “Silver Cloud” granite tops. The cabinetry is from Dura Supreme’s  Bria series of construction. This is a full-access or a “frameless” series of cabinetry. The painted white cabinetry is such a bright and updated change from the original Oak kitchen. The ceramic tile from the original kitchen was able to stay in place because the new kitchen design worked with it.

#1: A Full-Height Backsplash

The first design detail that truly makes a big impact in this kitchen is the installation of a full-height backsplash instead of a tiled space. With a character stone like this “Silver Cloud” granite, a full-height splash gives the opportunity to really showcase the natural veining in the slab. Shifting the beautiful pattern up to a visible, vertical plane also gives a really high-end look.
mirrored_cabinet

#2: Mirrored Cabinets

The second design detail that you can include in your space is the use of mirror in place of textured glass in the upper cabinetry. This may even be an upgrade you can make in your existing cabinetry. At first glance, you may have thought these cabinets had glass in them. Take a closer look and you see reflections of the scenic views outside of the new kitchen. Including mirror in kitchens and bathrooms was an up-and-coming trend in 2015 and has been predicted to be a big trend in 2016 and beyond. The look is great but think about how clever this concept is. Nothing is visible behind the mirror! That frees up “display” type cabinets to be used for any and all categories of storage. China hutches, Master Bath linen cabinets, the list goes on of great locations that can benefit by including mirror inserts.

#3: Designate a Drop Zone

The original kitchen footprint has been extended slightly into the casual dining area. A double wall oven from KitchenAid® has been installed for ease of use on the customer’s back. Now loading and unloading items is easy and the tall cabinet includes storage above and below the wall ovens. The double ovens are also perfect for preparing large meals during Holidays and special events. The end of this tall section of cabinetry is capped off with a tall angled end cabinet pantry. With shelving and outlets within this cabinet it is now the perfect space for a drop zone cabinet. Hidden out of sight is a charging station, calendars, mail and all kinds of items that would normally clutter up a countertop.

#4: Upgrade A Busy Appliance

If you don’t drink coffee, why buy a french press? If you don’t bake or use your oven often, maybe pass on convection features. Our point is that you should choose areas of your kitchen to upgrade that you can continue to thank yourself for over and over. A great example is upgrading your cooktop to induction if you cook often and want the best results. This may look like a standard electric cooktop but it is actually an Induction cooktop from KitchenAid®. Induction works using electromagnetic technology. It heats the cooking vessel instead of the surface. This allows you the immediate temperature control of a gas cooktop but in a smooth electric look. The Performance Boost feature allows you to exceed the maximum heat-level setting for up to 10 minutes, perfect for rapid boiling.
induction

#5 Upgrade Access

The Dura Supreme’s Bria series a frameless construction is inspired by European Cabinetry. This allows you full access to the cabinet box. No matter what cabinet line or construction your design includes, you always have the option to place drawered cabinets where doors and slideouts can also be located. Even though the footprint of this island remained the same that upgrade was made with the new island cabinetry.before after island

Now it is easy to access pots and pans and all kinds of added items within the drawers. Cabinet hardware was carefully selected to match the scale of the drawers the handles were placed on. The back of the kitchen island was also upgraded from smooth panels to custom wainscot panels. This upgrade makes a world of a difference in the finished look especially in a great room setting where the island back is highly visible.
island_back

This new space is now bright, stylish, and makes a big impact because of the upgrades included. The full-height granite backsplash is breathtaking and including mirrors in the upper cabinets is a gorgeous look. Extending the cabinetry to include wall ovens and a pantry/drop zone allowed an easier oven experience and the new cooking zone has an incredible Induction cooktop. Specialty cabinet inserts were also included and an appliance garage in the kitchen corner keeps the counter from small appliance clutter. There is so much to love about this space.

Geneseo, IL- Tailor-Made and Transitional

Take a look at any magazine cover or browse kitchen ideas online and you will discover very quickly that A white painted kitchen is still the current look. Our design sales staff from Village home stores teamed up to create a magazine-ready finished look at this Hazelwood Homes Inc. home built in Geneseo, IL. White painted kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comPainted “Oyster” Maple cabinetry in the “Savannah” door from our Koch Classic line is paired with a KitchenAid Stainless Steel appliance package. Warm and full of a variety of wood tones, this Hickory hardwood flooring from Sommerset’s “Character Collection” anchors the look in the “Saddle” finish. lightingPainted cabinetry and selections like these Kichler pendant light fixtures above the island help keep the space light and airy. This is a surprising success considering how many large cabinets that have been included in the design. In new kitchens we have began to expect to see a refrigerator surrounded with panels and cabinetry that stretches to the ceiling. Kitchen_design

Tall pantry cabinets and wall ovens are becoming more commonplace in kitchen designs that have the space allowance for them. This kitchen is in a new construction project, so space was available for whatever layout options the new homeowners were wanting.

Tailor-made Tall Pantry Cabinets

The layout of the two tall units on the hood wall was arranged by “stacking” varied styles and sizes of wall cabinets in place. Within the Koch Classic line, our kitchen designers are able to work with the factory to then build these units as a single item in place of shipping them all individually.
main_kitchen2

cabinetInstallers certainly would prefer to work with a single cabinet in place of four, but we admit this cabinet was built with the finished look in mind. The true motivation for having these tall cabinets built as a single unit instead of individual items is to achieve a seamless and customized look. Speaking of custom look, these cabinets are not something you can just walk into a “Big Box” store and purchase. Unique to this kitchen, a combination of doors and drawers surround a double wall oven on one side of the wall, and a full floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinet on the opposite wall.

To mirror the visual “weight” of the double oven cabinet to the left, a tall unit was designed with a versatile storage space within. This tall unit on the end also helps visually cap off the “end” to the kitchen perimeter in the Great Room space.Pocket doors in kitchen cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.com

The center of this tall cabinets space has been fit with “pocket” doors that can roll back into the open void. This space was designed for microwave or television area that could be hidden away behind doors when not in use. Add a slide-out shelf on the bottom of this space and you could even house a roll-out coffee station like this example in Bettendorf, IA.

Custom Wainscot Panels

Another way to give your kitchen or bar area a custom tailor-made look is to have a wainscot panel made to the finished dimensions of your island.

wainscot_panelsA similar look can be achieved with a smooth panel and trim. A true custom wainscot look looks as seamless as possible and the best way to get that look is to have a panel made to fit. Another custom detail can be found where the flooring meets the island. The baseboard molding used to surround this island was not baseboard molding at all. The same “Crown Riser” trim used to achieve the stacked molding look on the wall cabinets was used as a basebord.

crownGreat design is always found in the details. Details like an edge profile that matches exactly on the crown molding, door and drawer edges, and even the baseboards. That is a design detail perfectly planned out. Speaking of details all working together, take a look at this magazine-ready hood area.

At The Center of All Attention…

Located right at the center of all activity is a 36″ wide 5-burner gas cooktop with a 36″ wide chimney-style hood above. Beveled subway tile. | VillageHomeStores.com

This 3-speed canopy hood by KitchenAid is nothing out of the ordinary but when placed in this setting, it steals your attention right away. What is helping grab your attention to look at the hood wall is the backsplash tile found there.

tileWhite subway tile continues to be as popular as white painted kitchens. But we mentioned before to pay attention to the details on this project. Any of the “dream kitchens” you might have saved to Pinterest or Houzz include white subway tile? Revisit some of your favorites to see if that tile is a “beveled” subway tile. How can a long wall of white cabinetry with white tile still seem to have a lot of depth and style? The answer is texture. By using a beveled subway tile in place of a standard 3 x 6 smooth look, shadows are formed on the surface. This adds a tone-on-tone dimensional look to the wall. A range accent section of tile has been added and the same Carrara Marble material used as the island countertop is repeated here. countertops

Cararra Marble was installed as the island countertop in an “Eased” edge profile. Cambria Quartz counters surround the perimeter of the kitchen in the “Dunmore” design.  This Hazelwood Homes Inc. kitchen has all of the details to make it a great finished look. See the full album of nearly 30 photos from this kitchen here over on our Houzz page. Are you ready to start working on your own dream kitchen? Kitchen Remodel: A Lot To Be Thankful For

tileThis Thanksgiving, we know the “Hostess with the Mostest” and she happens to live in Geneseo, IL. We can’t think of a better week to share this recent kitchen remodel with you than the Thanksgiving holiday because it is the ultimate space for entertaining and preparation. These customers have waited many Thanksgivings to get to experience the one they are about to host in their new kitchen from Village Home Stores.
Kitchen remodeled by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Just look at this open, warm and inviting kitchen! It is hard not to feel comfortable in the new space and we can only imagine how good it must smell right now from all of the holiday foods getting prepared and served from it.  At the very heart of the new kitchen is a large single-level island with and overhang fit to host two seated guests. This single piece of Cambria Quartz in the “Walton” design is not only the ideal work surface, it is in the best location for all zones of the new kitchen.
large_kitchen_island

This 4′ x 6′ island top is within reach of the fresh food storage zone, kitchen clean up zone, and both the cooking and baking zones. Speaking of those cooking and baking zones, we think those might be the areas that most Thanksgiving hostesses would be jealous of in this kitchen… beginning with the three ovens available in this new design.
KitchenAid double wall ovens with True Convection. | VillageHomeStores.com

A 30″ wide built-in unit from KitchenAid offers two ovens for use. When you consider the True Convection features included in each of them, this built-in unit can bake six racks of items at the same time at a consistent temperature within the cavities (each 5.0 cu. ft. in size). Imagine getting your Christmas cookies baked all in one session!
KitchenAid built-in convection microwave. | VillageHomeStores.com

But wait….we said three ovens right? Well directly across from the double wall oven in the island is a built-in microwave also from KitchenAid. This model of built-in microwave also includes convection features. Making it a fully-functioning third oven when needed.  It even broils. For those handful of times throughout the year when you wish you had another location for prep or even warming items, imagine having three!  This kitchen is not just ideal for baking. The cooking area of the new kitchen is the visual focal point of the space.cooking_center

Surrounded by great features and prep space, the 5-burner gas cooktop by KitchenAid includes a lot of burner options and is only a 30″ wide unit. Full-width cast-iron grates make it easy to move from a high BTU burner over to a simmer or secondary location. The cooktop is set into a a base cabinet that has a unique layout. This layout allows for a large pots and pans drawer below and a sliding shelf to access the space behind the doors above.

The “reverse” drawer layout gives a unique look and helps create interest along with the decorative feet that have been added to the space. Above the cooktop is a decorative wood hood with a beautiful wood mantle and carved corbels. Hidden within the hood cabinet is a Broan hood insert that has been fitted with a re-circulation kit.
broan_hood_insert

With plenty of “landing space” on each side of the cooktop, you have a lot of prep area if needed. The large island countertop is directly behind the user in the cooking zone but the pathway between the two areas is large enough that multiple users still won’t feel crowded.  A pull-out cutting board is located right within reach of this zone.
cutting_board

With such a large, multi-functional island, it had to also look as amazing as the rest of the kitchen. It is at the center of all activity AND attention after all. Decorative support brackets were installed underneath the countertop overhang. These helps give a custom look and also allows added opportunity for the black accent glaze to show some detail. The cabinetry in this kitchen is from our Koch Classic line and is a Birch wood stained with the “Briarwood” finish and a black glaze has been applied.
kitchen_island

Above the island two large 3-light chandeliers hang. These lights by Feiss add a lot of style and allow your eye to look through and beyond them into the kitchen. Selecting the right quantity and scale of lighting above an island can be difficult on your own. One of the advantages of having our own lighting department in-house is your kitchen designer and lighting expert can work closely with you to find the perfect choice for your project.
kitchen_island_lighting

With so much to tour in this great new space we can’t forget the work that went into creating it. There were multiple walls removed and a lot of sub-contractors to coordinate. Our Full Project Management program was the perfect way to keep this project organized and stay on track for completion. High-ceilings were already a great feature in the original kitchen, but the kitchen itself was tucked behind walls and closets that kept the space from the great open concept you toured above.remodel_kitchen

If you look at the wood flooring and carpeting in the photo above, you can see the ghost of the original walls that crowded the kitchen and front entry to the home. Village Home Stores arranged for a new front closet to be added and all new trim and doors for this completed space. The header you see at the center of the ceiling pitches was installed due to the walls removed.
