Davenport IA- Basement Bathroom Gets the 5 Star Treatment

Just beyond the bedroom door of the Home Bar we shared in the last post, is a bedroom suite with a stunning new bathroom. This space immediately fools you into believing you have just checked into a 5-star Spa. A warm-gray palette and a jaw-dropping lighting statement make this one of our favorite projects of 2017! We think after you take a look around you will agree.

DuraSupreme cabinetry in the Shaker door and painted “Pearl” finish have been designed to offer as much storage as possible for the space. Stacked crown molding reaches all the way to the ceiling and plenty of drawer storage is within reach of either sink.

Two tall cabinets in the corner offer linen storage on shelves. The best way to get a feel for the layout and space is to look around! Press play below to take a look around this spa-like getaway complete with a custom tiled shower area:

The most remarkable elements in this finished design are the lighted mirrors. These back-lit mirrors were an idea our client had hoped we could ingrate into the design. Custom mirrors mounted with our Diode LED lighting behind them turns out to be a match made in heaven!
backlighting-mirror

Behind the custom mirrors from Steve’s Mirror and Glass we mounted to LED tape to back-light them. This Diode tape is low-voltage AND low-profile. That makes it perfect for unique custom projects like this. This same back-lighting look can be used in any area of your home. Imagine an entryway mirror, artwork, or a long mirror in a walk-in closet space. Press play below to peek behind the mirrors:

Proof that if you have an idea for your dream space… just ask! We have the resources to try our very best to make it happen. Clear communication of your budget and timeline is always key. Your team at Village Home Stores can help you decide what elements of you “dream” spaces are a must-have items for the overall look and budget or if there are alternatives. We want to keep you on track AND on budget.

The cabinetry in this bathroom was ordered with what is called “five-piece drawer fronts” to give each drawer the added detail of rails and stiles. Of course what you can’t see in these photos are other features like dovetailed drawerboxes, self-closing drawers, and soft-close doors. The area shown below is installed at a lowered height and now is fit for a seated makeup vanity area.

Bathrooms can be such a unique canvas for a stylish space. There are so many surfaces and fixtures that can add to an overall finished design. The Kohler “Symbol” faucets are absolutely gorgeous in this bathroom. They are mounted aside a Demi-Lav sink perfectly named “Wading Pool”.

The vanity areas have Cambria quartz counters in the “Berwyn” design and standard Eased edge profile. Quartz is a fantastic choice for a bathroom counter because it is stylish and extremely durable. Heat from hair appliances and makeup solutions and removers are no threat to the sparkling surface. Read more about the quartz investment in this previous post about our recent trip to Cambria.

Berwyn includes so many colors that are right on target for trends in the Kitchen & Bath industry. It pairs so well with bright whites and nearly all varieties of grays. A large walk-in tiled shower is always at the top of many bathroom wishlists. Take a look at the finished shower in this bathroom!

Because of the layout, a shower door isn’t needed. In fact there is even a turn in the shape to offer the user privacy. Right at the entry is a towel bar that warms your towel as you shower. The Jeeves E curved towel warmer is the perfect treat-yourself detail for a shower like this.

8″ x 32″ woodlook tile from the Woodland series in “Rectified Maple” is paired with accents of a Pebble mosaic tile in the Fiji Cream color. The tile from Sunderland Brothers looks perfectly on-trend and unique while still remaining neutral. Woodgrain tile gives you a unique look in an easy-toclean surface.

That same accent pebbled tile is used as the shower floor. By using this textured pebble tile as the shower floor, you are treated to a foot massage every time you use it!  Plus if the warm towel waiting for you isn’t enough pampering, just turn on the heated floors for you once you exit the shower.

It is no mystery why we are so in love with how this bathroom turned out. It checks all the right boxes: stylish, inviting, unique… oh and did we mention the client was just the bee’s knees?!?!  We love it when a customer is just as enthusiastic about the process and the project as we are. She was wonderful to work with on the whole project. This Lower Level remodel project includes this bath, a basement bar area, craft room and home gym space. See the full project here on our Houzz page. We hope to very soon feature it on an upcoming episode of the Village Home Show. Are you ready to talk about your OWN project with our store? Your first step is to reach out. Call us at (309) 944-1344 or complete this show online form and we will walk you through our process. We can’t wait to hear what you are working on!

Dura Supreme 2017/2018 Product Training and Trend Forecast

Village Home Stores has worked hard over the years to curate a list of product lines that offer our customers the very best value for their dollar. We believe strongly in building that list to include as much product made in the USA as possible. With every brand we offer, comes the responsibility to stay up-to-date with product knowledge and an awareness of anything new in the line. Therese is the newest member of the Kitchen & Bath Design team at Village. She just returned from a week-long training session with Dura Supreme and we wanted to share a bit of what she learned there.14We know that you are probably not as interested in the product knowedge and training Therese received as you are to hear what is new and trending in the industry (don’t worry we will get there). Here is a quick recap of some of the highlights from her training. Most importantly, Dura Supreme is truly customized line of cabinetry! If you or your designer can dream it up, chances are Dura can build it just for you! duracollage
Each and every order that comes through the facilities in Howard Lake Minnesota is built to suit that custom order. Nothing is stocked or pre-made. That was the main element that stuck with Therese as she toured the Dura Supreme factory buildings.

“I didn’t realize until seeing it in person just how hands-on a cabinet order is to Dura Supreme. The entire cabinet order I am sending for my clients is handled step-by-step through the process. It is great to know that when my clients invest in Dura Supreme Cabinetry the product will be expertly crafted just for them.”

Having the ability to modify and customize cabinetry within a design gives our designers the freedom to truly find the best working design solution for our clients using every bit of space possible. A great design must function well… but you want it to look great too! Dura Supreme also gives our designers an almost limitless catalog of finishes to use for the perfect look. 3

Wood stains, laminated foils, painted finishes, plus weathered and custom patina options allow us to offer something for any taste. The “Personal Paint Match Program” from Dura Supreme allow you to use any Sherwin Williams paint color and apply it as a custom paint color for your cabinetry.dura-supreme-jasper

In addition to the extensive product training during the week, designers from across the country were presented with a 2018 trend forecast. We will be unpacking some of these trends in more detail as we head into 2018 but wanted to give you a general list of what 2018 is predicted to bring to the Kitchen & Bath Industry.

Kitchen & Bath Trends For 2018:

The trend forecast for 2018 was presented by industry expert Karen Wistrom. Karen is Vice President of Marketing at Dura Supreme and also sits on the National Color Board. Her expertise in the field of trend forecasting and industry news is a wealth of knowledge. This is why Dura has always been at the very frontlines of any upcoming trend. When grays were predicted to become big, Dura was at the ready with years of research and development into the best gray options to offer us.inset-white-vanity

The Midwest Approach:

Our market is still very interested in the clean and versatile look of a white, flat-panel kitchen. But some trends can be put into play without a large risk attached. For instance, in the Midwest we are truly on board with two-toned designs. Our customers love the look of a second finish on an island or built-in hutch area. Not every trend will impact a region the same. For example, while we may have some clients from time to time that fit into the “Contemporary” style category, that doesn’t represent our average client’s personal style. The sleek look of our Dura Surpeme front desk cabinetry and waterfalling counters (shown below) better represents much of what the West Coast markets are used to seeing. Not as common for us to be installing in the extended Quad Cities Region. But the key is we ave it available! We have something for any taste!waterfall_edge

What’s Trending Now?

If you follow us here on our blog, or browse any websites or magazines at the checkout line then you have a pretty good handle on what is trending right now. Many times it can be hard to pin down a specific part of a space that you love. You can save 4 kitchen images for instance, to your own Houzz ideabook but perhaps its just the lighting in each that you really love. Here are some of the main trends we are seeing throughout the Kitchen & Bath industry right now:

  • High Contrast! More two-toned designs with more contrast from finish-to-finish. Think a rich Navy Blue island with a White painted kitchen perimeter.
  • Complete Color Neutral Designs and White-on-White spaces! Many designs have taken to a serene and minimal approach to finishing a space. Subtle palettes or Grays, Taupes and Beiges can create the perfect look. Classic looks of White-on-White continue to be a great look for Kitchens and Bathrooms.  Keep in mind these color neutral designs don’t have to be void of a pop of color! They actually make for an even better showcase for colorful accents.
  • Playing With Scale and Numbers! A great example of this is the shift away from the “rule of threes” approach to lighting above a kitchen island. In place of three small pendants, consider two larger fixtures. Or what about one large statement light above an island?two-lights

So What’s Trending Next?

The trends predicted to make a big impact in 2018 are many that we have been “dipping our toe in” so-to-speak for awhile. Many of the trends we have already began to use for clients and showcase in our Geneseo Showroom. Here is what you can expect to see next:

  • Black Finishes! We have began to see the shift from black accents like an island, or crown molding and instead seeing larger amounts or a dark, rich black painted finish. In 2017 we had a handful of completed kitchens that were 80-100% black painted cabinets.
  • Brass! Gold continues to stay on trend but a softer brushed look is starting to take the lead with this trend. Brushed brass, and warm champagne bronze finishes will continue to be popular. We see this trend for our Midwest market to be used in accessories hardware, and lighting. Plus we are very excited for Whirlpool® to launch the new Sunset Bronze appliance finish in 2018!
  • Oak! Yeah. For real! Oak is making a comeback! That may come as more of a shock for other markets because here in the Midwest, we never really saw a complete step back from Oak finishes in the home. In 2018 you will begin to see more lifestyle blogs and magazines showcasing the Oak woodgrain again! Keep an eye out for cerused or a pickled/limed look on Oak woods.
  • Mirrors! This is another trend that has been very easy to get our clients on board with. Including mirrors in your finished designs help to make a space seem larger and bounce light aroudn to help it seem brighter. What we love for cabinet design is the use of mirror instead of glass for doors. This gives a great look but no pressure to build a “display” or items behind it.mirror-cabinet

The Big Color For 2018…Green!

While we will continue to see rich, deep blue colors in the upcoming years, Green will lobby for our attention too! From rich, Emerald jewel-tones to bright, vibrant punches of color. Green will become a staple of both permanent finishes and home accents in the upcoming years. We have already began to see completed Kitchens and Bathrooms from our colleagues using rich, green cabinetry as well as muted, dusty green tones that pair well with grays.  green-accent

We will be showcasing more of these trends in detail on the blog over the next few months. Learn more about Dura Supreme and browse their finish options here on their website. A striking compliment to the Peppercorn stain on the cabinetry, is a suite of appliances in KitchenAid®’s new Black Stainless Steel finish. The first in the industry to introduce this true stainless finish. The new kitchen plan removes the original peninsula and now extends the cabinetry all the way down the wall to make space for a tall cabinet fit with a combination wall oven and microwave.

Convection features in the oven AND microwave allow this model to function as a double oven when needed. Wall ovens are fantastic for allowing you a view into the oven without bending over. When items need attention, use the SatinGlide™ Roll-Out Extension Rack for easy access. Across the kitchen is a section of tall pantry cabinets surrounding a 5- door Black Stainless Steel refrigerator.

This French Door model includes a 3-tier freezer drawer plus two refrigerated drawers. This is a full-depth model refrigerator. Read more about the differences between full/standard depth and counter depth refrigerator in this recent blog post. With the original peninsula design out, there is now room for a kitchen island. Our designer at Village Home Stores created an island design with plenty of storage and even seating in this kitchen.

A rectangle island top is extended into a rounded seating area supported by a cabinetry post beneath. The post supports the counter and allows 4-5 barstools to pull up for a comfortable casual dining space. Cambria® Quartz in the “Galloway” design ads sparkle and drama to the kitchen design. The warm grays and soft whites in this quartz allow it to be a great choice for many kitchen and bath projects.

The island support post serves double-duty as a hidden storage area. Why build an empty box of panels and trim if it can be functional too?! Speaking of creative storage, this kitchen is packed with it! When you open up your Tupperware cabinet at home are you fearful of an avalanche of lids every time? Then you need this Rev-A-Shelf® insert in your life!

This insert pulls out to access slotted spaces perfect for sorting lids and containers. Press play below to see this incredible storage solution sure to make the very top of every client’s kitchen wish list.

Another great hidden storage solution is located to the right of the gas cooktop area in the kitchen. This pullout utensil cabinet keeps any busy kitchen organized and has everything within reach! Have you ever seen a beautiful new tile backsplash that immediately looks crowded and busy because of all the outlets and switches that interrupt it? Introducing the adorne® undercabinet system by legrand®. Plenty of power, light, and innovative options that are hidden out of sight underneath your wall cabinetry.

This collection can be completely customized for your lifestyle and your layout. Wish you had an outlet in a different location? No problem! This system is modular so you can move outlets and even add accessories like tablet cradles and bluetooth speakers. Like this look? Check out this other recent kitchen remodel we completed that also includes the adorn® system.

The tracks are installed at the seam where your kitchen wall meets the back of your wall cabinetry. This keeps it nearly hidden from plain sight when viewed within the kitchen. With many options and accessories available, the best way to get all of your questions answered about this product is to visit our award-winning showroom at 105 S State Street in Geneseo, IL and see it installed!

With the new kitchen installed came the opportunity to also put in a matching custom bench seat. A custom cushion could be made for the bench seat but this customer loves the look of the woodgrain so much they have left it uncovered. On the subject of woodgrain, note the gorgeous new flooring in this kitchen. It is actually not hardwood but instead a Luxury Vinyl Plank from our Adura line. The series is named “Ashford Walnut” and the color is “Foxwood”.

A long hinge allows for the storage access door to be opened and left open without slamming shut. Think of all of the small and unusual spaces in your own home that could be potential storage areas. Don’t hesitate to ask about your options with Village Home Stores to help make the most of these spaces.

Another small space that received a storage upgrade was the corner of the kitchen shown below. Added storage and a small landing space for setting down items. This angled base cabinet can be used in a number of ways in a kitchen design. Here it stands alone as a wonderful storage niche.

Hazelwood Homes- An Inset Instant Classic in Geneseo, IL

How can something so new already be an instant classic? Even though this Geneseo, IL home built recently by Hazelwood Homes is brand new, the look is classic. How do you achieve classic status right away? By selecting details and materials that all lend themselves to a polished, classic look without a date or trend attached to it. Take a look and see what we mean:
Kitchen in a home built by Hazelwood Homes including Dura Supreme inset cabinets and Cambria counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

Nothing about this finished space waves a flag with a year or a single trend on it. There is nothing more universally classic than a clean, white painted kitchen. With tastes and trends varying all across the country a white painted kitchen remains something we can all agree on. This Geneseo, IL family takes the look to the next level by selecting added details you will love.
White inset doors and subway tile for a classic modern farmhouse look. Expert design and material selection for your new home. | VillageHomeStores.com

Painted white cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line in the “Arcadia” door and inset construction is paired with a classic white 3″ x 6″ subway tile backsplash. The tile is from our Rittenhouse line and the “Arctic White” color is in a soft matte finish. The hardwood flooring in this great room space is gorgeous. Casa Bella’s “Baroque Oak” series in the “Marche” finish has such a depth of colors and the look is beautiful. Two countertop materials have been included in this kitchen design. The main perimeter of the kitchen has Cambria Quartz counters in the Torquay design. The polished quartz tops are a great contrast to the matte finish wall tiles. A Stainless Steel appliance suite from our KitchenAid® line looks right at home in the space. This 36″ KitchenAid® Dual Fuel 6-burner range is a hard-working investment for this kitchen.
Kitchen in a home built by Hazelwood Homes including KitchenAid appliances. | VillageHomeStores.com

With 5.1 cu. ft. total capacity and EasyConvect™ Conversion features, this range is commercial in style but easy to use. The immediate control of a gas cooktop and the consistent and efficient use of convection cooking. This range is enviable to any serious home chef but not intimidating to frozen pizza connoisseurs. Two pendants from the Feiss “Harrow” series hang above the large kitchen island. The Oil Rubbed Bronze finish is a great compliment to the dark granite top below and seeded glass gives a New Traditional look to a classic style.
Large kitchen island with brushed granite counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

The main focal point of this kitchen is the island itself. In a close second for your attention is the range and hood wall of cabinetry. A wood hood has been ordered from Dura Supreme to match the surrounding cabinetry. A beautiful mantle shelf has been applied for a classic detail and location for seasonal decor, leaning artwork, or left clear as shown.
Kitchen in a home built by Hazelwood Homes including Dura Supreme cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.com

A bold eye-catching contrast to the white kitchen is found in the large island counter. A “Black Pearl” granite top is large in size and includes an undermounted farm sink. This dark top is a bold statement but take note of another material selection detail in the granite’s finish… it isn’t polished! In place of a dark, high-gloss polished granite top the “brushed” finish has been selected. This allows the natural stone to give the look of a soapstone or slate style and texture. The installed look is softer and less formal in appearance. A slight arc has been included on the overhang of the island. This end is now ready to accommodate counter-height stools for seating in the new kitchen.
Kitchen in a home built by Hazelwood Homes including Dura Supreme inset cabinets and brushed finish granite. | VilageHomeStores.com

A detail that may go unnoticed at first glance is the style of cabinetry in this kitchen. The doors themselves are a very transitional flat-panel construction.  The detail we are speaking of is how they are not resting atop of the cabinet face frame. Instead these cabinets have been ordered in an “inset” construction. This look has been around as long as cabinet furniture-making has been. Many old homes include built-in cabinets with this same inset door concept. The next time you are near an antique piece of furniture there is a very high chance that you will find the doors are also inset. The cabinet and door all sits flush with the frame of the cabinet and this design choice takes a basic white kitchen and transforms it into an instant classic! Inset cabinetry can be ordered with a hidden hinge (like shown here) or an exposed barrel hinge. Click here to see a past kitchen feature on the blog that showcases the exposed hinge look on an inset door.

Did you know that according to a recent Houzz survey on 2017 trends in the industry we spend nearly 3 hours a day on average in our kitchens? Yes we are socializing and entertaining but we are also many times reading, working from home, or even just watching TV. In a kitchen this stunning it would be a shame to clutter up the countertops with a TV. That is why a space was designated for a small television right above the refrigerator. With this kitchen already including inset doors, adding pocket door hardware that allows the doors to roll into the cabinet box makes the screen visible from anywhere in the kitchen without a door to block the view.

Showroom Updates 2017: First Impressions

We are beyond thrilled to share our 2017 showroom updates with you here on the blog! Village Home Stores has a lot of great things planned as we move into 2017. This showroom update is a significant start! We have purchased a third storefront and added 1,200 sq. ft. of space for a brand new lighting showroom. We will show you are that complete lighting space and our remodel process later this week. Let’s begin today with a tour of our brand new front reception area:
New front desk area at Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

As our business continues to grow, we have changed and adapted our customer experience so that every person that visits our store leaves feeling glad they came. Our entire showroom now is over 9,000 sq. ft. that’s a lot of product and space all in one location! You will now enter the center door off of State Street and be greeted and guided by Therese. That’s Therese in the photo above, look how happy she looks in her new desk area! She creates all of our beautiful full-color renderings for our Kitchen & Bath Design customers. She will now be the first smiling face you see whether you are shopping for a single lightbulb, a full appliances package, or an entire home of products. The back wall of this new reception area is easily one of our favorite new areas of our entire showroom. Layers of texture and a variety of materials make a big first impression.
DuChateau Wood panels in the Kaudra style and Brown Ask finish. | VillageHomeStores.com

Have you seen our new signage inside the store? It looks so amazing day and night! We gave the folks at ItsaSchmollworld our logo and they gave us this incredible metal sign! We installed it over a Dahltile Limestone named Martinique Arctic Gray. The logo is back-lit with our Diode LED lighting system.
New Village Home Stores sign made by itsaschmollworld lit with our low-voltage Diode LED lighting system. | VillageHomeStores.comOne of best benefits of using our Diode LED lighting to back-light this sign is the fact that it is low-voltage. That means we can leave this sign lit all day and all night and use very little energy for the bold statement it makes. See for yourself how amazing this back wall looks in the evening when you are passing the store. The pendant lighting flanking the logo is another  great element to the finished design.
SQ3

These pendants are from our ELK Lighting line. The series is named Gramercy. We love the schoolhouse shape to the glass and the brushed finish pairs perfect with the metal logo sign on the same wall. The wood panels behind each pendant are a unique new product we have just launched, DuChateau wall coverings. These panels are from the Kaudra series in the Brown Ash finish. We are so excited to has access to this great new product! Consider these wall coverings for a fireplace wall or as an accent wall in a Master Bedroom. Below is a moodboard of the variety of finishes included in this new front desk:
Front reception desk finishes at Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Brushed Bronze handles from our Top Knobs line add a warm matte-finish gold look which is right on trend for our industry. Two finishes and styles of DuraSupreme Cabinetry have been included in this desk design. Gray Painted cabinets in the Middleton doorstyle and paint called Moonstone. The warm gray/bronze laminated cabinets are the Talia Horizontal style in a finish named Wired Bronze. Many times the countertops selected can easily become overpowered by everything else in a complete look. These Cambria Quartz tops in the Seagrove design wrap just about every available remaining surface and command your attention!
Cambria_waterfall_edge

This installation technique is called a “Waterfall” edge. Cambria seems to spring up from the floor, wrap the cabinets and desk surfaces and cascade back down again seamlessly. The front face of the desk includes a recessed area of paneling that repeats the Wired Bronze finish from the back wall of cabinetry.
front

All of this sits atop a new floor from our Marazzi line. This is a wood-look porcelain tile that will be a durable and stylish choice to hold up to the high-traffic area of the showroom. This 6″ x 36″ tile is from the American Estates series in the Natural color. If you want the look of wood but a durable and easy to clean surface, ask one of our flooring experts at Village about a wood-look tile.

Davenport, IA- Warm Cherry Cabinets and Large Black Painted Island

This Davenport, IA kitchen has been completely remodeled to extend its footprint into a nearby dining room. There is now plenty of space for a long L-shaped layout with a large island. Warm Cherry cabinetry from our DuraSupreme line has been installed in the full-overlay  “Kendall” doorstyle and “Clove” finish. A “Black” painted island in the same raised-panel doorstyle offers a bold contrast to the kitchen cabinets and new LVT White Oak flooring.

We often share just the before and after parts of a remodel story… but that is not the whole story at all! This episode allows us to return to the jobsite while the real work is happening. With our show, we are able to give you access to more of the entire story that went behind the beautiful finished kitchen tours we share here on the blog. Take a look at the before and after images from this kitchen below highlighting how much more cabinet space is now available with the center wall removed.Davenport kitchen before and after remodel. | VillageHomeStores.com

Because it can now stretch into the original dining room area, this new kitchen design is nearly double what it once was. There is even an area remaining for a casual dining space with 4 chairs. Just because we have absorbed the original dining room as part of the new kitchen, doesn’t mean this home is left without one. An adjacent front room has now been claimed as the new formal dining room area. The before and after image below shows the view into the new kitchen from this new front room dining area. Dining room becomes part of kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The window that now sits above the sink was far to low in the original dining room to accommodate a kitchen beneath it. A new window was installed at a taller height and now instead of looking up to a pass-through, the sink user gets a beautiful view! The cabinetry surrounding the new kitchen window has been finished with raised-panel ends for an added design detail. Can lighting is concealed behind a matching cherry valance and a cherry dustcover on the ceiling completes this look.

Beautiful Cambria® Quartz counters in the “Fairborne” design are installed in a standard “Eased” edge profile. A Tumbled Travertine tiled backsplash is a perfect match in tone adding a new texture against the smooth, polished quartz tops. A 50/50 well sink by Blanco in the “Biscotti” finish has been undermounted to the quartz.

The remodel process with Village Home Stores doesn’t begin on that first demo day. Your remodel starts with us in the store during the designing and material selection phases of your project. A wood hood look like the one shown above begins as a full-color rendered design you can see in your first presentation from our store. Renderings help you get a better vision for the finished space including the materials you have selected.

As you will see in the episode, there are plenty of specialty cabinets within this kitchen design. Dura Supreme offers a wide variety of pull-out options including knife blocks, spice racks, and this towel bar cabinet. Keep cleaning supplies accessible but separate from food with one of these unique specialty cabinets. This towel cabinet also works great in a bathroom or laundry room design.
pullout-towel-cabinet

Surrounding the refrigerator is a tall pantry cabinet that has been fit with adjustable slide-out shelving. There is a built-in pantry storage area on the end of the kitchen that is not shown in these images. That pantry can now be used for household items and food storage can be exclusively in this tall unit adjacent to the refrigerator.

The tall pantry is capped off with an open shelf cabinet that faces those entering from the garage-entry end of the kitchen. Applied doors have been attached to the end of this cabinet to sit flush with the pantry doors and customize the look. The shelves can be used to display seasonal decor, cookbooks, or decorative dishes. This design also works well on the end of an island as we have shown in this Moline kitchen tour.

Trending: Kitchen and Bath Trends For 2016/2017

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of getting an invite to a Tastemakers Tea to meet, mingle and discuss trends throughout the Home Decor, Fashion, and Floral industries. These industries are closely knit when it comes to trend and color forecasting. Materials, color palettes, and details all pour over into the Kitchen and Bath industry.  Village Home Stores offers expert design and material selection for your new or remodeled home. We strive to be thought-leaders in out industry and always keep our eyes and ears on what is trending so that we can keep the perfect products available for our customers.

We understand that a kitchen design is far more permanent of a decision than purchasing a statement necklace or floral arrangements for your next event but each of these purchases reflect your personal taste. Your personal taste is such an important thing and every bit of your home should reflect it. So much of what we learned at this Tastemakers Tea translates directly into what we are seeing in the Kitchen & Bath industry! Here are 5 trends that we know you can put into play right now for your kitchen or bath design in 2016/2017:

Include Natural Items:

Natural items such as marble, granite, or woodgrain are not just limited to the “permanent” items in your kitchen.

Natural materials like stone and horn. | photo by Sarah Sunstrom Photography

Natural Stone Canisters and Horn Decor from Katsch. Photo by Sarah Sunstrom Photography

Fall is the perfect time to begin to bring the outdoors in with your home accents. The canisters shown above are made from a gorgeous marble and that horn? it’s a bottle opener that you will never have to go searching for because it is cool enough to leave out layered as part of your look. As you prepare to entertain for these Autumn weeks ahead consider giving your kitchen a whole new look by swapping out that accessories layer in the space. If your kitchen is looking tired, clear everything off of the counters and shelves and challenge yourself to try a new look. You will be amazing at what a new rug or set of canisters can do to jump-start this process.

Mix Metals:

Nervous about this trend of mixing metals? Kitchen accessories and wall art are the perfect way to dip your toe in and test the waters.

Copper is a fantastic Fall color and it happens to look right “at home” in the kitchen. These vintage canisters from mabel. in Geneseo, IL would pair up quite nicely with the marble set shown above. Mixing metals with other textures can be fun. If you are ready to dive into a more exciting look in mixed metals, your designer at Village Home Stores is ready to help you balance and visualize the finished space. Take a look at this kitchen featured recently on the blog. Black Stainless Steel mixed with Stainless and Copper finishes. | VillageHomeStores.com

This completed look is polished and complete and includes 4 metals finishes in the design! KitchenAid’s Black Stainless and Standard Stainless Steel appliances are paired with Hammered Copper sinks and Oil -Rubbed Bronze faucets. See the complete album of photos from this project here on our Houzz.com page.

Go Gray:

Gray continues to become the new neutral choice all across the board. We were gracious to attend Dura Supreme’s Design Symposium again this year and many of the trends they spoke of last year were still atop the list for 2016/2017.  Last year we blogged on how Gray is here to stay. Take note that this “trend” is one worth your consideration for your kitchen or bath project because it is forecasted to stay on point for the next 5-8 years.Decorative end panel on the end of a kitchen peninsula. | VillageHomeStores.com

At Dura Supreme’s Design Symposium we were shown a beautiful new finish combination that really reflects the direction of the Modern Farmhouse look that is evolving into a very polished concept. The “Farmhouse” look is no longer limited to a barn door and an apron-front sink. The polished Modern Farmhouse look has evolved to include many of the trends we are touching on in this post including warmer grays, natural details, and mixed metals.

Dura Supreme Hickory Morel finish. | VillageHomeStores.com

Dura Supreme Hickory Morel finish available at Village Home Stores.

The “Morel” stain shown here on a Hickory door is a Gray/Brown Undertone finish that allows the natural characteristics of the woodgrain to show. With so many of our projects now including an accent island or cabinet in some area of the design, this wood finish is a great option. If you are considering including a “cool” or a “warm” painted finish to combine with your wood cabinetry, “Morel” pairs perfectly with each concept.

Turn Up The Heat:

So if Gray is the new neutral, what should I pair it with? Our short answer… all the things! An important point we want to make is that because we are seeing Gray used throughout the home, the “cold” and “drab” gray you are picturing is not the Gray you are after. Warmer tones of Gray are most commonly found in cabinet finishes, paint colors and home decor items. These warm Grays pair amazingly with woods ranging from light to dark.

Leather woven run from Katsch in Geneseo, IL. | VillageHomeStores.com

Desmond the Dachshund models a leather woven rug from Katsch.

Selecting warmer Grays and pairing with a rich woodtone also lends itself to including many of the other design trends we are suggesting. Including natural items (see our first suggestion in this post) is easy when a warm Gray is in the mix. Natural fibers and materials include a variety of colors in a piece. We snagged this great rug the day of the event from Katsch and it makes for a perfect kitchen sink rug. Natural rope is woven with Gray leather strips. It is unique, comfortable, and stylish. See more great examples of Gray used in beautiful spaces on this Pinterest Board we have curated.

Include Mirror & Glass:

Adding mirror to your space can be a real game-changer when you are looking for a whole new look. A quick change can be to swap out one piece of wall decor for a framed mirror. If your kitchen sink is not beneath a window add a mirror above your sink! This can also be a great way to play around with mixing metal finishes. Challenge yourself to choose a framed mirror different from your faucet or cabinet hardware and repeat this new metal finish someplace else in the space. We carry many framed mirror options in a variety of styles.

Swap out some artwork for a mirror in your kitchen or bath.

Swap out some artwork for a mirror in your kitchen or bath.

At the Tastemakers event we saw antique mirrors used as trays and clear glass accessories were proven to be versatile pieces you can use all year round. We recently blogged about a kitchen that included mirror inserts in place of glass and it bounced light and beautiful countryside views all around the space. A creative surface to play around with mirror is in your kitchen or bathroom tile. Stop by our showroom to see some of the many fun options we have that include mirrored accents in a variety of colors and styles.

If you are wanting to give your kitchen or bath and update consider one or more of these suggestions. Many of them can be done right now possibly with items you have already! If you need some new pieces to use, shop Geneseo, IL for these great looks! If you are wanting to start completely fresh and create a space in your home on trend and complimentary of your own personal style we want to help make that happen! Contact Village Home Stores today to start the conversation about your own project. Our thanks to Katsch, Designs on the Boulevard, and mabel, for hosting the Tastemakers Tea event. Geneseo, IL- 5 Design Upgrades For Your Kitchen

This beautiful Geneseo, IL remodel has a lot to offer in terms of style and impact. As we take a look around we want to share with you 5 great design upgrades included in this tour that helped take this finished space to the next level. Perhaps one of these details might be right for your own kitchen remodel project.
Kitchen before and after. | VillageHomeStores.com

White painted cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line is paired with “Silver Cloud” granite tops. The cabinetry is from Dura Supreme’s  Bria series of construction. This is a full-access or a “frameless” series of cabinetry. The painted white cabinetry is such a bright and updated change from the original Oak kitchen. The ceramic tile from the original kitchen was able to stay in place because the new kitchen design worked with it.

#1: A Full-Height Backsplash

The first design detail that truly makes a big impact in this kitchen is the installation of a full-height backsplash instead of a tiled space. With a character stone like this “Silver Cloud” granite, a full-height splash gives the opportunity to really showcase the natural veining in the slab. Shifting the beautiful pattern up to a visible, vertical plane also gives a really high-end look.
mirrored_cabinet

#2: Mirrored Cabinets

The second design detail that you can include in your space is the use of mirror in place of textured glass in the upper cabinetry. This may even be an upgrade you can make in your existing cabinetry. At first glance, you may have thought these cabinets had glass in them. Take a closer look and you see reflections of the scenic views outside of the new kitchen. Including mirror in kitchens and bathrooms was an up-and-coming trend in 2015 and has been predicted to be a big trend in 2016 and beyond. The look is great but think about how clever this concept is. Nothing is visible behind the mirror! That frees up “display” type cabinets to be used for any and all categories of storage. China hutches, Master Bath linen cabinets, the list goes on of great locations that can benefit by including mirror inserts.

#3: Designate a Drop Zone

The original kitchen footprint has been extended slightly into the casual dining area. A double wall oven from KitchenAid® has been installed for ease of use on the customer’s back. Now loading and unloading items is easy and the tall cabinet includes storage above and below the wall ovens. The double ovens are also perfect for preparing large meals during Holidays and special events. The end of this tall section of cabinetry is capped off with a tall angled end cabinet pantry. With shelving and outlets within this cabinet it is now the perfect space for a drop zone cabinet. Hidden out of sight is a charging station, calendars, mail and all kinds of items that would normally clutter up a countertop.

#4: Upgrade A Busy Appliance

If you don’t drink coffee, why buy a french press? If you don’t bake or use your oven often, maybe pass on convection features. Our point is that you should choose areas of your kitchen to upgrade that you can continue to thank yourself for over and over. A great example is upgrading your cooktop to induction if you cook often and want the best results. This may look like a standard electric cooktop but it is actually an Induction cooktop from KitchenAid®. Induction works using electromagnetic technology. It heats the cooking vessel instead of the surface. This allows you the immediate temperature control of a gas cooktop but in a smooth electric look. The Performance Boost feature allows you to exceed the maximum heat-level setting for up to 10 minutes, perfect for rapid boiling.
induction

#5 Upgrade Access

The Dura Supreme’s Bria series a frameless construction is inspired by European Cabinetry. This allows you full access to the cabinet box. No matter what cabinet line or construction your design includes, you always have the option to place drawered cabinets where doors and slideouts can also be located. Even though the footprint of this island remained the same that upgrade was made with the new island cabinetry.before after island

Now it is easy to access pots and pans and all kinds of added items within the drawers. Cabinet hardware was carefully selected to match the scale of the drawers the handles were placed on. The back of the kitchen island was also upgraded from smooth panels to custom wainscot panels. This upgrade makes a world of a difference in the finished look especially in a great room setting where the island back is highly visible.
island_back

This new space is now bright, stylish, and makes a big impact because of the upgrades included. The full-height granite backsplash is breathtaking and including mirrors in the upper cabinets is a gorgeous look. Extending the cabinetry to include wall ovens and a pantry/drop zone allowed an easier oven experience and the new cooking zone has an incredible Induction cooktop. Specialty cabinet inserts were also included and an appliance garage in the kitchen corner keeps the counter from small appliance clutter. There is so much to love about this space.

We included a full video tour of this finished space in a recent episode of the Village Home Show. In that tour, we give a detailed look at induction features and benefits. Press play below to watch it.

Partial Remodel- How To “Pull Off” Mixing Metals

Three wood finishes, two granite colors, AND four metal finishes? Yes that is correct! Take a look at how amazing everything looks together! Proof that with the right guidance and vision, you can pull off mixing materials like this. The perimeter oak cabinetry is actually original to the kitchen. A peninsula was removed and now a large painted island sits in the center of the kitchen.
A blend of finishes in a Prophetstown, IL kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A brand new appliance package was purchased from Village Home Stores including A counter-depth refrigerator and dishwasher in KitchenAid’s first-in-the-industry Black Stainless Steel. This uniquely tinted Stainless Steel is sophisticated, stylish, and striking in person. The true Stainless Steel finish wipes clean in seconds and the tinted color even helps reduce the appearance of fingerprints on the panels.

The new kitchen island top is a granite named “Desert Dream” and on perimeter of the kitchen “Astoria” granite has been installed. Both of these natural stones are in a “brushed” finish. Instead of the expected high-polished look granite normally has, the brushed finish gives a unique and warm texture while enhancing the look and feel of the stone. Two stones and two appliance finishes. The refrigerator and range wall is the best example of showcasing the two finishes side-by-side that work perfectly together in the finished look.

A Stainless Steel 30″ wide, front-control slide-in electric range is just inches from the Black Stainless refrigerator. The new distressed painted wood hood above the range and accent tile ties everything together, the look is perfect. A Stainless Steel microwave drawer in the new kitchen island is right across from a Black Stainless dishwasher. That is not all for metal finishes in the new space. Oil-Rubbed Bronze faucets have been paired with Hammered Copper undermount sinks.

The Hammered Copper is not only a great color to add to the mix, the texture is incredible. With views of the countryside out every window, this Hammered Copper adds a rustic touch to the space while the shape and setting keep it formal. The use of a deep farmhouse apron-front model sink is the right choice for this Rustic Traditional look and offers even more of that Hammered surface to show.

An updated look to an existing Oak kitchen. The finishes aren’t the only upgrades included. The appliances selected for this project represent some of the best features available in appliances today. The slide-in range includes convection and steam features in the oven and 5 elements including a warming zone. An internal water dispenser, versatile shelving, plus a three-tiered freezer drawer make this one of the most spacious counter-depth refrigerators you will ever use. This 24″ wide microwave drawer by Sharp has been redesigned to pair more seamlessly with all of our brands. With a tilt-out control panel, there are no handles to match up. Perfect for including in islands or even built-in to a custom bar area, this microwave is one of our top-selling models for both remodels and new homes. View our full catalog of appliances here on the website and contact anyone from our expert appliance sales team with any questions you have on these products.

Oak crown molding and refrigerator panels were ordered to adapt the existing kitchen to the new design. The new black-painted cabinetry is from our DuraSupreme line and showcases their Heritage paint series. A wood hood above the new range and a large kitchen island are each finished in the “B” color from this series. An “X” back panel design is paired with a beadboard end panel treatment. There is now space for four barstools plus plenty of space for a large dining table area right next to the island.

DuraSupreme’s Heritage paint finishes come in a wide range of color options. From a bright antique white to this black painted look there are so many possibilities. Heritage painted finishes all include distressed features like chipped corners, worn edges, and even “bird-pecking” which are perfect old-world characteristics for the furniture-look island and wood hood installed.

This new kitchen sits on the perfect platform to showcase the complete look. Beautiful new Hickory hardwood floors have been installed throughout the entire great room all the way to the front entrance of the home. This warm Hickory “Tackroom” finished hardwood is from the Chaparal Collection. “Annie” (see below) just loves laying in the sunlight on her new Hallmark floors.

Annie is now pretty much internet-famous thanks to this feature Hallmark Flooring wrote up on her (new floors). All of these finishes together in one space and does it work? ABSOLUTELY! Having a designer on hand to help you select and place your selections keeps your project vision on track and well executed. Your designer at Village Home Stores will have a firm grasp on the overall vision for the finished look and that is a valuable asset.

A new tile backsplash ties all of these selections together perfectly. Matte finish subway tile in a color called “Elemental Tan” plus a Glazzio accent tile from their “Corrugated Scapes” series in the “Ginger Clove” color. A bold band of accent tile spans the entire L-shape and a square field installed above the range completes the look.

This partial kitchen remodel was not all we completed at this home. New flooring was installed in many rooms and two bathrooms were completely made over. See the full album of over 70 photos from these projects here on our houzz page. We also are happy to announce that this kitchen and both bathrooms has been included in an episode of the Village Home Show. You can watch it entirely by pressing play in the video below:

Davenport, IA Remodel: Upgraded and Accessible.

This Davenport, IA kitchen has received a whole new look! The entire remodel process was managed from start to finish with the Complete Project Management Program at Village Home Stores. Upgraded layout features and a stunning selection of materials, welcome to our latest featured kitchen remodel…
Davenport, IA remodeled kitchen with grey cabinets and Stainless appliances. | VillageHomeStores.com

Knotty Alder cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line has been stained in the “Cashew” finish. The “Arcadia” doors have received a “Coffee” glaze to help accent the door details and rustic features of the Knotty Alder. A sophisticated Stainless Steel suite of appliances by KitchenAid offers a great finished look and exceptional features. Cambria Quartz countertops in the “New Quay” design have a classic and neutral range of colors. Press play below to watch the episode of The Village Home Show that includes a full video tour of this completed space:

This entire space is furnished with a warm grey palette of materials in a variety of tones and textures. Before we show you around the new space, check out this before photo of the original kitchen:
before

What a transformation of style and space! The original kitchen was an L-shaped layout with a small dinette area. A wall divided this kitchen space from an adjacent Dining Room. The new layout opens up the kitchen into that available Dining Room area. Take a look at this design rendering from the presentation stage of this remodel project:Kitchen Designers in the Quad Cities. | VillageHomeStores.comThis is the view into the new design from the Dining Room table. The cooking center of the kitchen has been moved to the original dinette area and a peninsula of base cabinetry caps off the end of the kitchen in the new open-concept design. The refrigerator stayed in the same location but the cabinets surrounding it have been selected to better use the space. The wall that now includes a gas range and chimney-style hood has been upgraded from a “meh” dinette space to a magazine-cover worthy new look!
Grey stained cabinets in kitchen with Stainless appliances. | VillageHomeStores.com

This wall has now become the focal point of the entire new space. If the sleek look of the new range and chimney-style hood doesn’t grab your eye, the backsplash design sure will! A “Cascade” mosaic series of tile from our Glazzio line has been installed throughout the kitchen as the main backsplash. The “Diamond” series in a complimentary color spans the entire space behind the range and hood. KitchenAid’s freestanding slide-in gas range with Even-Heat™  True Convection features flawless baking results. The EasyConvect™ Conversion feature takes guesswork out of convection cooking by converting conventional settings for recipes to convection settings for you as you enter in the recipe’s temperature and contents. This cooking center of the kitchen was designed so that items and prep space can all be within reach of the range. Large deep drawer stacks are on either side and two pull-out spice racks flank the range unit. Click play below to see one of these pull-outs in action:
This same pull-out concept can be installed in a shallower wall cabinet or in bathroom vanity setting. Shown here full of spices it is easy to picture use in a busy kitchen. Consider this same cabinet in a master bathroom. A pull-out cabinet can be the perfect way to store makeup and hair products. Even appliances like flatirons or blow driers can be stored perfectly in a “grooming rack” cabinet.  In the new sink area of this Davenport, IA kitchen a pull-out towel rack was installed. Click play below to see this innovative option:
A rack for hanging towels and shelving above and below all offer space for cleaning supplies. Knifeblocks, tray dividers, and even pegboards for utensil storage all can be located within a pull-out unit. We have many of these examples on display in our Geneseo, IL showroom so stop in to see them in person. The new sink wall turns a corner into a peninsula area where the original dividing wall once stood. The back of this peninsula is now visible from the Dining Room and Living Room areas. Finishing off the cabinetry with a decorative end panel and matching doors for the back help give the the peninsula a completed look. If you look closely you will notice that the cabinet door against the wall has a handle. Access to storage below this countertop overhang has been included.
Decorative end panel on the end of a kitchen peninsula. | VillageHomeStores.com

The accessible storage on the back end of the peninsula is there due to cabinet choices made on the inside of the kitchen design.  In the corner of this design the customer wanted to include wide drawers in place of a lazy susan or other corner cabinet option. The sinkbase cabinet and drawer stack each meet in the corner and leave enough space on the end of the peninsula for a wastebasket cabinet. As we mentioned previously, pull out cabinets come in a variety of internal layouts from Dura Supreme. Wall and even tall pantry cabinets can include pull-out features but by far the most popular pull-out cabinet from this or any of our cabinetry line is a wastebasket cabinet.
Dura Supreme Cashew stain with Coffee Glaze. | VillageHomeStores.com

Dura Supreme builds their pull-out wastebaskets to hold the bins near the floor of the cabinet. This gives the bins a more solid and sturdy space once they are full, and make loading and unloading trashbags easier. Above the peninsula two pendant lights have been installed. These “Neillo” mini-pendants by Kichler Lighting hang directly above the kitchen peninsula where a wall once divided the kitchen and dining spaces. Now that the two areas are one open concept, a 3-light fixture from the same series has been installed above the Dining Room table. Our lighting experts at Village will help you decide the best size, quantity, and style of lighting for your new space.
Kitchen lighting pendants above peninsula. | VillageHomeStores.com

The original kitchen in this Davenport, IA home did not include enough accessible pantry storage space. A solution for the new design was to include a tall and wide pantry cabinet fit with adjustable slide-out shelves. The customers didn’t want to have a microwave hood take any of the design impact away from that great cooking center wall. They also wanted to use every available inch of base cabinet space for easily accessible storage.  A small landing space was created to the right of the pantry area that is large enough to accommodate a large-capacity countertop microwave.
grey kitchen cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.com

Below this landing space is a wide stack of drawers used to store plates, bowls, and mugs. Village Home Stores offers a wide range of cabinet lines. With each line of cabinets you have the ability to upgrade cabinet construction and drawer box options. The “drawer guides” are the hardware that allow that drawer box to move in and out from the cabinet frame.
Drawers for dishes and mugs. | VillageHomeStores.com

This kitchen was ordered with “dovetailed” drawer boxes and full-extension guides. This means that when the drawer is all the way “open”, you have full access to the entire drawer box. These same full-extension guides have a soft-closing feature included. The soft-close feature makes it impossible to ever “slam” a drawer shut. A soft-close door hinge was also included in this kitchen. Anything from light tap to a forceful swing, all of the doors in the new space close slowly and quietly. above_pantry

This kitchen was remodeled from start to finish and from floor to ceiling. With walls being removed, a new ceiling was required and with a new footprint to the kitchen layout, new flooring was in order! This flooring choice is absolute perfection! A high-end look and an eye-catching application, Provenza Hardwood was installed at an angle. This “Antico Vintage” floor is the exact shade of all of the glazed detail on the knotty alder cabinetry. Provenza Hardwoods are hand-scraped AND hand-stained. In fact everything about Provenza Hardwoods is handcrafted. There is no machined work involved. This may add some time to receiving the product, but in turn it certainly ads to the value of your investment! provenza_flooring
