East Moline, IL- Wall Removed to Create Multiple Dining Options

We were so thrilled to begin this kitchen remodel in East Moline while we were filming a season of our TV show. It allowed us the opportunity to go beyond just showing you some before photos and then tour the finished space. Instead we were able to really show you the entire process! Here is the finished space including Birch cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Vicksburg” doorstyle. Vicksburg is a full-overlay door with a solid-wood center panel.

The original kitchen (shown below) included dark stained cabinetry in a U-shape layout with a peninsula area of base cabinets and wall cabinetry suspended above. This created a very crowded feel to the kitchen when in it working or entering it from the front door. Laminate countertops with a drop-in sink and white appliances were all a part of the old kitchen that was ready for an update.

Now the new kitchen is open and incredibly stylish! The back wall of the kitchen has been removed and in its place is a bar-height knee wall with an overhang for seating. These 4 barstools are just the beginning of the many dining options this entire open concept now has. Outside of the new kitchen are two front rooms, each ready to be considered a formal Dining Room space. Why designate one room as a dining room when the crowd you entertain changes over time? Now that this couple has children and grandchildren coming for meals, they can fill the entire space with tables and seating if needed!

Want a better idea of what a jobsite looks like between the before photos and all the beautiful after photos we share here on the blog? Press play below to watch the episode of the Village Home Show including the entire remodel story from this East Moline, IL kitchen. Tour this kitchen with the before and after story plus everything in between.

What a difference a fresh new layout can make for the entire main level of this home! As youi saw in the episode, we installed new wood floors throughout. Depending on the flooring material and the project itself, your floors may need an extra layer of protection during the remodel process. In the case of this East Moline home a heavy-duty temporary floor protection is used named Ram Board. The Paramount Acacia hardwood flooring is installed and almost immediately after installation the durable floor protecting paper goes over it. kitchen-during-east-moline

The next few weeks of this kitchen floor’s installed lifespan will be it’s most challenged. That is why we take no risks of a scratch or a dent as crews work atop the new floors. We even left this Ram Board in place while filming the kitchen for the show. Once everything is finished and the appliances have been delivered and installed, the Ram Board is removed to reveal your new flooring. Acacia wood flooring from the Quad Cities flooring experts at Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

This Acacia is from the Bucks Country series in the “Teak” finish. The flooring finish is a great compliment to the kitchen cabinetry. The darkest areas of the flooring color are a great match to the Birch “Brandy” stain on the cabinets. Our favorite corner of the new kitchen is this lighted glass-door cabinet with wine storage. Remodeled East Moline, IL kitchen including a wine display cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.com

Glass shelves allow the LED lighting to wash the interior of the cabinet with light. A decorative winerack below can house plenty of bottles. Grecian white interlocking marble mosaic tile reflects on the new polished “Black Pearl” granite counters.
east-moline-tileThere are many who think selecting a dark granite top for their project might make a room seem very small when paired with dark cabinetry. In this East Moline, IL kitchen, the finished combination if gorgeous! Rich, polished stone and a Birch wood with a rich Cherry look. The finishes in this now opened space are perfection. East Moline kitchen remodeled by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.comWith the wall removed and the kitchen opened up into the nearby Dining Room area, the space has plenty of light within it. Opposite the peninsula wall is a large window (show in image above) This natural light teams up with our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system and plenty of new can lights for a bright space day and night. There is plenty of storage in the new kitchen including a tall pantry cabinet next to the refrigerator.Pantry cabinet near refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com

Taylor Ridge Remodel: Traditional Style in a Rustic Setting

Taylor Ridge Kitchen remodel by Village Home StoresLike so many of our most successful kitchen transformation stories, this one includes the removal of a wall to open up the existing kitchen space to create a more open concept for the home. We loved this remodel project so much that we featured this kitchen on an episode of the Village Home Show. Also included in this episode is a tour of the adjacent bathroom that includes a Laundry area on the main floor. Main kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores

Living through a complete kitchen remodel can be quite a process. Kitchen remodels are so rewarding once complete, but they do take some time. Great kitchen transformations like this don’t happen overnight. Watch this episode of the Village Home Show and see how this space was transformed from start to finish.

As you saw in the video above, much of the work done to this kitchen happened before any of the new cabinetry was installed. Just look at this wall that was in the way of the original space:Before and after remodel iin Taylor Ridge by Village Home Stores

By removing that wall the new kitchen is now a part of the front living room and natural light can pour in from all directions. This pair of Taylor Ridge newlyweds were not just challenged with the space restrictions of the existing kitchen, they also had a mix of personal styles that they wanted to be addressed. Located up on the sweeping hills of Taylor Ridge, the couple wanted to be sure to nod to the rustic setting even though their personal tastes were more timeless and Traditional.

Kitchen remodel with island by Village Home Stores

Their designer from Village Home Stores was excited to get to work on finding them the perfect selection or materials to give the right finished look to the space. Of course the look and feel of the new kitchen is only a fraction of what makes it a well-designed kitchen. The function of the design is most important, especially in your kitchen. Let’s start by looking at the layout of the new design.Design rendering by Village Home Stores

In the case of this kitchen, spreading out into the new space and adding areas for prep, storage and entertaining were key. A large island in the center of the design checks off all of these boxes. Even with the new large island in place, there is still plenty of room for a full dining room table on the opposite end of the room. Kitchen island by Village Home Stores

A single level island was designed with adequate seating space for four (plus plenty of leaning up to and chatting space for many more). The island includes storage accessible from three sides and decorative paneling and trim all around it to give the look of a large furniture piece. This leaves the view seen buy guests Traditional and stylish from every angle.Appliances by Village Home Stores

The island side facing the kitchen user includes the dishwasher and built-in microwave drawer. The entire package of kitchen appliances is from Village Home Stores and includes a 29 cu. ft. refrigerator and double oven gas range from KitchenAid. A Sharp microwave drawer, and Broan hood insert have also been installed. With the dishwasher and microwave facing the sink and a wood hood in place of a stainless unit, there is less Stainless Steel in the overall first impression. This keeps the look updated but Traditional without having to invest in panel-ready appliances. Outlets in island by Village Home Stores

With an island this large you will want to use it for many tasks. An outlet is camouflaged discretely on the end facing the cooking wall of the kitchen.  Now small appliances can be used for prep and entertaining.
Cabinet end panel by Village Home Stores

Moving the refrigerator to the opposite wall helps to keep all of the main kitchen appliances in one zone of the kitchen.  The large kitchen island is located right in front of the refrigerator to provides plenty of space for loading and unloading items. With the largest appliance to the left of the sink, that frees up the entire other wall for a chance to create a dramatic look for the new kitchen. two-tone kitchen by Village Home Stores

Above the new double oven gas range is a wood hood with decorative corbels. Framed in by lighted glass-door cabinets on either side, this wall is the focal point of the entire room. Walking in the front door your eyes lock on this area right away! The main tile throughout this kitchen is glass subway tile appropriately named “Truffle” by Ann Sacks. The mosaic inset above the range is is from Epic Stone. This mosaic perfectly combines the colors of the field tile, Cambria Quartz countertops, and wall cabinetry. scrolled corbells by Village Home Stores

This scrolled corbel style helps anchor a Traditional style to the overall look. The painted “Pearl” finish on Koch’s “Royale” doorstyle has been accented with an “Umber” glaze perfectly showcased here on the corbels. You may have noticed the contrasting island of this kitchen but did you notice the other bold contrast of this look …?dark base lower and light upper cabinets by Village Home Stores

The base cabinetry of this entire kitchen is a rich “Mocha” stain while all of the upper cabinetry and refrigerator surround is in the “Pearl” painted finish. This may be a bold concept to hear described to you but look at it in action here! The upper cabinets seem to almost “float” above and give the whole room a larger feel. This contrasting concept can be executed for all styles from Contemporary to Old World.spice cabinent by Village Home Stores

A pullout spice rack is accessible just to the right of the double oven gas range. these spice cabinets are available for both base units and wall units.

Just to the right of this wall is the hallway that is now easily accessible from the open kitchen, dining, and living room. Sliding barn door in kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores

A handcrafted custom barnwood door by Character Interiors has been installed on sliding hardware that includes a lock on the interior. Behind this barndoor is a large double vanity bathroom with a tub shower and front-load laundry from Maytag. In the episode posted above in this post we give a full tour of this new bathroom space. Across the way, an unused corner of the original kitchen has now been given a brand new look.

hutch before and after remodel by Village Home Stores

This built-in hutch cabinet helps extend the kitchen cabinetry into the dining space and give a customized look. The lighted top section of the wall cabinet provides a fantastic ambient light source and a space for displaying items. wood countertop by Village Home Stores

A custom wood top has been installed in the same finish as the island and base cabinetry from the main kitchen. This helps tie the rich “Mocha” stain into the hutch area but keeps the entire section looking like a Traditional sideboard cabinet. Our Diode LED undercabinet system is installed underneath the painted cabinetry and inside of the glass-front wall cabinets. With a dimmer switch function added, these efficient lights can be used all day every day no matter what the mood is. cage light by Village Home Stores

There are two other great lighting zones in this gorgeous new space. This Dining 4-light chandelier is from our Golden line. Exposed bulbs in clear glass caged in a dark finish keeps the light from seeming to large. You can see through it into the new kitchen and pendents just beyond it. pendant lighting by Village Home Stores

These 3 pendant fixtures are from our Minka-Lavery line. Hanging pendants above an island can be done in so many ways. we love the look here of a cluster of lights hung at varied heights. The visible filament of the “Edison” style bulbs and varied heights here help lend a more whimsical feel and add rustic Old World charm.sink remodel before and after by Village Home Stores

Timeless and classic, but with a nod to the rustic setting of this countryside Taylor Ridge home. This kitchen turned out gorgeous! Davenport Remodel: Cabinet Curiosity

davenport_remodel_kitchenThis kitchen remodel is so new to these homeowners they haven’t even had the chance to “move into” the new cabinetry. I stopped by last night to take some final photos to share here on the blog and was greeted by two very sweet cats right when I walked in the front door. These cats were very curious about my camera and equipment and still very curious about their new kitchen. With their permission, we would like to show you around the new space…

Range_wallThe original kitchen was ready for an update but the layout itself was also in need of a few changes. These customers worked closely with their designer at Village to find the space to expand the island in the new layout. The new cabinets also extend all the way to the ceiling for over a foot of added shelf space in all of the wall cabinets.

Durian BuildersThe original island in the kitchen worked well as a landing and prep area but only included two small cabinets. The new island is almost twice as long and now includes a curved end section that will act as an eat-in dinette area. The curving overhang on the back travels on into the inside area of the kitchen island as well. Counter-height barstools are on order for this new island.

The clients knew they wanted to select a Cambria Quartz for their countertops but were not sure which design they liked best. One of our favorite things about Cambria is that not only are they made in the US, they are made in the Midwest! While these homeowners happen to be traveling through Minnesota, Cambria welcomed them to stop by and see full slabs of their designs. Once they spotted this ” “Bradshaw” color in person, they knew it was perfect.

curved_island_topCountertops that overhang in toward the user are very common in many island designs. The back end of this island is paneled for a very polished and finished look. The front side facing the kitchen sink wall is full of much needed cabinetry storage.

drawer_undercounterIn most cases a “full-height door” cabinet will be included in any area that the counter will overhang above it. The overhang itself keeps you from fully accessing the top drawer of a standard base cabinet. By carefully planning the location of the island curve, this design allows a standard base cabinet with a wide top drawer to have full access.

Now that we offer flooring and backsplashes our customers have began to select some really beautiful materials with us.  It can be discouraging to pair the right materials with the perfect layout and design for the installation and then remember you will have outlets and switches interrupting that great look. This solution has become very popular for many of our remodel projects…

outlet underneath kitchen cabinetThe underside of a standard kitchen wall cabinet is constructed with the “floor” of the cabinet recessed up from the surrounding sides of the unit. This recess area is great to conceal under-cabinet lighting but can also be used other ways. When placed near the back of this recessed area, an outlet or even switch can be installed and stay fairly concealed from eye-level when viewed from across the room. This keeps electrical receptacles from crowding the beautiful backsplash area.

cat_photobombThe new kitchen cabinets include great storage spaces like the all-wood susan in the corner you can see in action over on our YouTube channel here (note the curious cat in the last frame of the video). Speaking of curious cats, it seemed like every time I opened a cabinet to snap a photo they wanted to model the cabinet. You will notice when we post the full album of photos to our Houzz.com profile that about 70% of the photos have a cat in them. If we know anything about the internet it is that the world doesn’t mind a good cat video or photo so about halfway through the photo shoot I just stopped asking them to move out of the way and let them show me around. I think they thought they had invented a new game called “hey climb in here!”

kitchen_davenportIt should also be mentioned that the kitchen is not the only work that was completed as a part of this remodel project. The crew from Durian Builders also removed part of a wall and we even replaced the back patio doorway to the deck. Flooring and trim was installed and some work was done in the adjacent Laundry Room as well.

Durian_BuildersThe original kitchen included a wall that blocked access to the Dining Room behind it. The before photo inset here shows that the wall was very much a part of this new space and opening it is into the rest of the home was a huge part of making this new space even more accessible and enjoyable.

Cherry_Kitchen_CambriaOur full Project Management Program at Village Home Stores is in place to make the remodel process easier on you. The designing and selection stages have become so much easier for our clients now that the flooring and backsplash can be selected along with the other materials. The cabinetry is from our Koch Classic line in the Cherry “Prairie” door and “Burgundy” finish. Natural Oak wood floors were installed throughout. The Handles used in this remodel were from Hardware Resources and were the perfect compliment to the curves of the Stainless appliances.

This project involved many subcontractors that were coordinated by our team at Village Home Stores. All materials came from Village Home Stores.
