Bluegrass, Iowa Kitchen Remodel With Warm Woods and Black & Gold Accents

Maple kitchen with gold lighting and Village Home Stores logo.

The warmth of a wood stained kitchen is always an inviting look for a design. We absolutely love how these Bluegrass, Iowa clients took their modern eclectic tastes and translated them with their designer at Village Home Stores into a kitchen. This new design suites the style of the home while still reflecting an updated look. Maple Dura Supreme Cabinetry in the “Kendall” door and “Clove” stain have been accented with a “Black” accent paint on the edges and details.

The mix of warm woods and views of the Iowa countryside out of the windows evoke a connection with nature. Another wonderful natural connection of bringing the outdoors in is the use of natural stone countertops. Natural stone is a fantastic surface choice and a material that is timeless and rich in history. In this kitchen we installed Granite counters in the Makala Bay color.

As much as quartz companies can attempt it, never can you recreate the natural character and unique opportunity you have to invest in natural stone for your project. Having a large island top like this is a great way to showcase the natural variations in colors, materials, and veining that natural stones offer. A fun and exciting step in the natural stone selection process with your Village Home Stores designer is the option to visit the Epic Stone warehouse in Davenport to hand-select your stone slabs. Learn more about this local selection process and get directions and details for Epic Stone LLC here in a past blog post.

This kitchen design includes a corner sink with granite plant shelf that looks out two windows. Ask a Village designer if your space allows for a corner sink design. We love the lighting selections made for this kitchen. The pendant light fixture above the kitchen sink makes a statement without blocking the light and view outside. Textured seedy glass on this “Stone” pendant light from Capital Lighting adds texture and style to the space.

The kitchen includes accents of dark bronze, matte black, and even some brushed gold. The cabinet hardware is the “Highland Ridge” series from our Amerock line. Black appliances we also used in this design and they perfectly complement the Black painted accent glaze on the surrounding cabinet doors and drawers.

With the natural granite counters as a focal point of the overall look, a more subtle wall tile was desired. We installed 3″ x 6″ “Highland Park” Subway Tiles in the Antique White color to compliment the background colors of the granite slabs. If you would like to see a full album of photos from this finished remodel, click here to see it on our Houzz profile. The full wall of tile look so clean because we tucked all of the wall switches and outlets up underneath the cabinetry!

A single-step way to update any space is by changing out the light fixture! As we were working on this kitchen remodel we also selected new light fixtures for other areas of the home. We love the new dinette light that was selected just off the kitchen. This modern take on a classic brass chandelier compliments the home and the new kitchen style. The “Zander” light by Capital Lighting (shown below) is available in many sizes.

Moline, IL Kitchen Remodel Finds Room For Style and a Small Island

This Moline, IL home was ready for a new kitchen look and layout. There were no major changes as far as moving appliances or even removing soffits. Rich new finishes were selected, storage was added, and room for a small kitchen island was found. Koch cabinetry in the flat-panel Savannah door and Birch wood stained Chestnut is a perfect compliment to the existing woodwork in the home.  Moline Illinois kitchen with Nevasca Mist granite, Koch Cabinetry, luxury vinyl floors, and mosaic tile. Remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

The main wall of cabinetry is found on the sink wall of the kitchen. A range is centered on a nearby wall with landing space on each side.  With plenty of walkway space surrounding it, a kitchen island is an important part of the new design! Prepping for a meal and coming home with a load of groceries just got a lot easier for this household. This two-cabinet island is a very functional part of the new layout. Perfectly located for prep, back door entry, and even space for seating! The added storage and work surface this island brings to the new kitchen is so important. The island top is also the best place to see the stunning granite selected for the kitchen. Moline Illinois kitchen with Nevasca Mist granite and Koch Cabinetry remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

One of the exciting parts of choosing granite for your remodel project in the Quad Cities is that we have a local source for you to select your material from! This can be a very interesting way to make a personal connection with your design. Epic Stone is located in Davenport, Iowa and there you can walk the aisles of slabs and help decide what you are drawn to. Your designer at Village can then partner with our fabricators to make sure the stone you hand-select makes the journey from Epic, to the fabrication shop, and then finally into your home. Learn more about Epic Stone here in a past blog post. This Moline, IL customer selected a stone named “Nevasca Mist” and it is a beautiful blend of warm grays and beiges.

So much great storage and functionality added to the kitchen with this small island. We also love the flooring selected for the new space. These may appear to be 12″ x 24″ ceramic tiles but no grout lines! That is because they are actually luxury vinyl tiles. Our Tarkett Premiere line can be installed with or without grout. This kitchen showcases a neutral color named “Onyx Travertine Silver” and the look is great. Moline Illinois kitchen with Koch cabinetry in Birch wood and Chestnut finish remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.comThe appliances were updated recently in this kitchen but we did make an adjustment to the microwave hood area of the layout. A smooth panel was installed above the microwave area to match the look of the drawerboxes in the kitchen. We added to the soffit depth on this side of the kitchen to allow the small crown molding to be installed and now the wall cabinet section has a full, customized surround look.

Across the kitchen was an area put to better use in the new design. The new kitchen island now can be a landing zone for back door entry. Instead of a base and wall cabinet combination, a tall pantry cabinet now offers so much storage space and a customized look to the stand-alone section of the kitchen. Moline Illinois kitchen tall pantry cabinet in a Birch wood and Chestnut finish remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

If you peek at the before and after image below, you will notice there wasn’t exactly a lot of backsplash space in the “before” kitchen. Tall wall cabinets were installed beneath existing soffits leaving only half of the expected space you would want for that area. If you look at the “after” side of the image, you will see a more comfortable suggested space of 18″.

It truly lets the tile choice in the new kitchen to be showcased. The tile and granite selections together are just perfect! The mosaic tile seems to have been made just for this pairing! Glazzio’s Closseum Series in the Caesar Beige color looks incredible! The granite and tile are splendidly showcased by our bestselling Diode LED lighting system.Moline kitchen with Nevasca Mist granite and Glazzio Colosseum series tile. Kitchen remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

This Diode LED lighting system is such a wise investment and every customer that has it installed is so happy with it. It is low-voltage, and low-profile leaving you with so many options for installation. Of course undercabinet lighting is our most popular use. Because of their low power use, these lights are perfect if you like to keep a night-light on on the evening or like to have lights on waiting for you when you arrive home. The Diode lights can also be dimmable shown below on one of our legrand radiant collection paddle switch sets:Moline Illinois kitchen with legrand Radiant paddle switches and outlets. Old homes are just so much fun to remodel because you honestly never know what unique feature you will stumble upon! In this Moline home there was a laundry chute located on the left wall of the kitchen sink area.  While the homeowner wasn’t planning on using it for laundry, he did find a fun use. Voila! a recycling chute! He keeps a plastic bin down below to collect cans and sends them down when he is finished. We think Alice in Wonderland would find it a “curiously” custom solution and definitely a conversation starter. Moline Illinois kitchen with small custom door, Koch cabinetry in Birch wood and Chestnut finish remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

Product Profile: Natural Soapstone

Natural stones have been mined from the Earth for centuries to be used for decorative purposes. Each natural stone that is formed has unique qualities from every other. That is why you may find certain materials recommended for specific locations or uses. For example, marble is ideal for  pastry-making because of the temperature the material maintains among other reasons. While the common use for Soapstone may not come to mind right away, chances are you have work on a Soapstone surface before. Think back to your Chemistry class or any lab course you may have taken…remember the lab tables?

soapstone_on_islandThose dark green chalky tabletops? There is a very good chance those tops you are picturing  were Soapstone! But why? Many of the same reasons why Soapstone has been used in labs for hundreds of years are why you may want to consider it for your kitchen counters.

soapstone_benefits

The first reason you see listed we will touch on when we talk about care and maintenance for Soapstone. The second item listed is that Soapstone is a naturally non-porous material. Nothing will absorb into the material itself. This means it is completely stain-resistant! A fantastic quality in any kitchen countertop!

soapstone_on_white_cabinetsBut why is Soapstone so great in a lab? Soapstone is also an inert material. This means that it is impervious to acids, heat, and chemicals. Bottom line, not a thing in your kitchen can change the makeup of this material once it is installed in your home. While Granite and Marble are extremely durable materials to install in your kitchen, you do need to be cautious of some things that can harm them. Read more about this here on our blog. Another interesting characteristic of Soapstone is that it can absorb, store, and even radiate heat. In fact it is still used as a material in some heaters. Native Americans and Vikings used soapstone and shaped it into cooking-vessels because of these characteristics.

soapstone_maintenanceBut didn’t we mention above that Soapstone “builds character over time”? Soapstone (also known as steatite, or soaprock) is made up mainly of the mineral talc. This is what gives Soapstone the chalky and “soapy” feel and appearance.   While Soapstone is inert and non-porous, it is a soft material. In a kitchen countertop application this means your Soapstone counters will develop surface scratches. These surface scratches and worn areas are what tell the story of your stone once it is in place. If this is not a look you are after, then discuss with your designer at Village Home Stores what materials can give you this same look but in a harder surface. How do you get your Soapstone to have that darker look with less talc? You oil it. Take a look at this image of an un-oiled Soapstone countertop:

beforeIf a more traditional Soapstone patina is what you are after you will want to oil your counters. Note below the same top with an oiled section in the center:

oiled_imageSee the natural patina that comes out of the stone when an oil is applied over the material? Applying mineral oil (NOTE: not mineral spirits) to Soapstone brings the natural beauty out of the material. The mineral oil will not absorb into the top it just enhances the surface of the material. Many times a coat of mineral oil can also conceal the appearance of surface scratches. If you still have surface imperfections on your Soapstone you can remove them by hand with a fine-grit sandpaper before oiling.

clothKeep your mineral oil and a designated cloth for oiling with your other kitchen cleaning supplies. This way you can continue to use the same cloth and not confuse it with others used for food prep. Because the oil will not absorb into the Soapstone, you may have some non-uniform oiled areas on your tops for a few days as your oiled tops “dry”. These can be wiped clean with a dry cloth. This oiling process can be done as often as you would like. Oiling your Soapstone tops is not a mandatory maintenance. It doesn’t have to be done at all, just often enough to maintain whatever patina and look you want your tops to exude. Many customers oil their tops once a month for a year and get the overall look they desire. They then may oil it once a year or never again as it builds its character.

Keeping an open mind as you walk the aisles is most important. Bring a camera or have you smartphone or tablet ready to take pictures of favorites and labels during your visit. There are so many stones to choose from. Epic even has some fun new visualizer tools on their website to try!

Labels at Epic Stone indicate name, country of origin, and price category.
Labels at Epic Stone indicate name, country of origin, and price category.

As you make your way around the warehouse at Epic you will notice each stack of slabs are labeled. There are three important elements to these labels to make note of:

  • The Name of the stone is important to note as some colors have many variations of the same name and this may change the price and color if the wrong name is given. The label shown above indicated that we were looking at a slab of “Super White Brushed” stone. “Brushed” is important to note in this case because these slabs of “Super White” are not a polished, glossy stone and are priced a full category higher because of the “Brushed” finish.
  • A price category is indicated in the bottom right hand corner of the label. Categories range from 1 on up to the high teens. The lower the number, the lower the cost. Your salesperson at Village will get the full estimate together for you, they just need to know what category you have selected.
  • Another element to the material labels is the origin of your stone. This is what makes natural stone so amazing and unique. The stone slabs you see at Epic are mined throughout the world. How wonderful will it be when someone visiting your home asks what the name of your stone is and you can reply with a name and location from where it came?

Epic Stone, LLC is located at the bottom of North Division Street, in the former Franks Foundries complex. The warehouse is a gigantic warehouse of stone slabs, so it is cold in the winter months and can get very hot in the summer. Dress prepared for the current temperature. While they have open hours, it is always best to call (563) 323-3603 ahead to make an appointment. This makes your time spent at Epic more focused. Materials change so frequently so making an appointment also gives you the opportunity to ask if colors you are considering are there.
