Kitchen With Warm Gray Oak Cabinetry, Quartz, and Tile in Colona, IL

The rumors you have heard are true, Oak cabinetry is having it’s moment again in our industry! The look trending right now just may not look like the 80’s/90’s Oak kitchens you have seen in the past. Doorstyles and finish trends are different and there are a lot of great ideas out there for how to two-tone a kitchen design using an Oak finish. The best remodel result from the rising Oak trend right now is that you can get a new look in your kitchen and bath that compliments the existing Oak trim and doors you have throughout your home. A great example of this is in a recent remodel we just finished in Colona, IL. Take a look:

Dura Supreme Cabinetry in Red Oak wood and gray stain. Paired with Viking cooking appliances, Limestone tile, and Cambria Berwyn Quartz. | villagehomestores.com

Red Oak in the Highland door and warm gray “Heather” stain allows the wood grain to enhance and add texture to the kitchen. This kitchen showcases our Dura Supreme line of cabinetry in a way that thinks outside of the “white kitchen” box! Yes, a great cabinet solution when you have existing wood trim and doors is to go with a painted finish… but what about a contrasting stain instead? The kitchen image below is a great example of how this Heather gray stain allows the woodgrain to be enhanced and compliments the nearby oak door and existing oak antique hutch right next to the tall pantry cabinet.

As you can see in these images from the finished kitchen, the woodgrain adds so much depth and texture to the space. Gray stain is an updated approach to an Oak kitchen. The finished kitchen has its own impact but now looks right a home with all of the other surrounding spaces as well. A small island is at the center of the U-shaped kitchen design. This provides a great landing space for the cooking and refrigerator zones and also a large work surface for a second kitchen user if another is at the sink or cooking areas.

The wall tile in this kitchen remodel was another material selection that showcases natural beauty. An “Arctic Gray” honed Limestone is cut and beveled into 2″x4″ tiles and each is different from the next. The lightest of the tiles mirrors the color of the countertops, and the darkest mirrors the color of the cabinetry stain. Our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system showcases this tile day or night. McClellan Heights Kitchen Remodel With White Cabinets and Honed Granite

Kitchen remodeled from start to finish in the McClellan Heights district of Davenport, IA by Village Home Stores.

There are so many incredible homes and unique neighborhoods in the Quad Cities area. Such a storied history down each road. The McClellan Heights district was listed on the National Register of Historic PlacesĀ in 1984, at which time it included 354 buildings that were decided to contribute to the historic character of the area. Not just limited to the Village of East Davenport, this area technically stretches from Jersey Ridge road to the Bettendorf City Limits and from River Drive to Middle Road. There is such a history to the area dating back to the American Civil War. We are so blessed to get to be a part of many of the kitchen and bathroom restorations of these important properties in our community. The homes are unique and eclectic in period styles and details and many even boast views of the Mississippi River. We were thrilled to renovate the kitchen in one recently and want to show you how it turned out. Take a look!

When renovating historic homes, every material selection and inch of storage space should be considered by an expert. These homes were built with that relentless attention to detail and great craftsmanship. You simply are doing yourself (and your return investment) a disservice for your property if you don’t respect the remodeling projects in your historic home. For this kitchen we chose to install a classic, flat-panel cabinet style in a painted “White” finish. The door is a full-overlay door named “Savannah” from our Koch Classic line. The cabinetry includes full-extension soft-close drawer guides and soft-close doors.

The countertop surfaces for this kitchen give the look of a classic soapstone material. They are actually a Honed Black Pearl Granite in an eased edge profile. While “matte black” finishes are currently on-trend for kitchen and bath projects… they have always been on trend for historic properties! The soft, leathered look of a honed natural stone is a wonderful choice for both style and performance. A 30″ Classico Fireclay farmsink was under-mounted to the island top to complete the look. To keep the kitchen counters clean, and offer a more stylish option for a kitchen hood we tucked the microwave out of sight in the island (see below). These base microwave cabinets can be a great location for larger appliances that can sometimes clutter up a countertop area.

Keeping the kitchen feeling airy and light are the two new Kichler “Everly” pendant lights that hang above the island. The clear glass shape gives an old world look and the dark Oil Rubbed Bronze metal finish marries well with the countertop selection. Our lighting experts at Village Home Stores can help you select a whole home of lighting or that one perfect fixture for your space. Learn more and shop our lighting selections here online.

Classic, white-painted cabinetry can be a great nod to the past while pairing so well with modern elements like appliances and kitchen accessories. White kitchens like this never go out of style. We choose to install a wood cabinet hood with a blower insert within it. Using a stainless chimney hood here could shift the style of the space into a more modern category. This cabinet hood instead gives the function of a 390 CFM Broan Blower and blends in perfectly with the surrounding cabinetry.

Old homes typically don’t have large kitchen or bathroom spaces to work with. Homeowners need to work with an expert kitchen designer to make the most of their space. Of course we packed great storage solutions in the cabinetry anywhere we could. Slide-out shelves, large drawers, a pullout wastebasket and slideout tray divider (shown below).

We even extended the main kitchen into the dinette area by installing a custom bench seat. The bench seat drops down below the windows and turns the corner to provide seating for an antique table. Some of the bench is even functional storage! Drawers (shown below) provide great storage space for seat cushions, placemats, even pantry items if needed.

We love the faucet that the customer selected for their home. The bridged look of the handle controls and faucet gives a great old world feel. A low-key modern detail is the push-button garbage disposal we installed in the kitchen island. This single button (shown below to the right of faucet) adds a low-profile modern amenity for the kitchen user. Bright Polished Chrome accents on the Top Knobs cabinetry hardware and Kohler kitchen faucet are also a nod to the restoration style.
