A Great Room Kitchen With Rustic Details- Hazelwood Homes

We just stopped by this new Hazelwood Home in Geneseo, IL and we are in love with every detail. New homes can often miss out on the character and uniqueness that older homes have. We are happy to report that this one is brand new but already has set itself apart! With great rustic details and an open concept perfect for a busy household, this great room and kitchen turned out incredible! Take a look!

Painted Koch Cabinetry in the Maple Savannah doorstyle and “Ivory” finish creates an L-shaped perimeter to the kitchen. One focal wall includes the cooking zone with cooktop, hood, and wall ovens. The other wall is home to the taller, deeper elements like the refrigerator and pantry area. The kitchen is located as part of an open living room, dinette area, and hearth room. All of these spaces are within sight of each other and the way this family has styled the space is so perfect.

The island functions as a kitchen work surface and added casual dining space. The island cabinetry is also from our Koch Cabinetry line repeating the same doorstyle but this time in a Birch wood and “Stone” stain. We love how the gray stain allows the character of the wood-grain to be highlighted. Three pendant lights hang above the kitchen island. These “Urban Renewal” pendants from our Feiss line are so transitional in style they would look right at home here in this rustic setting as well as a historic home or even a modern eclectic city loft.

Doesn’t that wrapped beam in the kitchen and the beamed ceilings in the lofted living room space add so much character!? We also included a modern farmhouse detail to the back of the island. The kitchen island is a single-level design and in place of wainscot doors or a smooth panel, we created an “X” design. This look is achieved with paneling, trim, and a skilled carpenter. There is even an outlet tucked away under the overhang. Island outlets like this are perfect for kitchen appliances but also laptops and other work-from-home devices or a homework station power source.

The kitchen island is also the kitchen clean up zone. The kitchen sink and dishwasher are located right at the center of all activity. This dishwasher from Whirlpool is quiet at just 47 dba (normal conversation noise measures around 50 dba). It also has a third-level rack inside for items like lids and utensils. The kitchen sink introduces another great texture to the space, hammered copper. This double-well sink is a great compliment to the granite counters and mixed metals throughout the great room area. We have a well-executed blend of Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Stainless Steel, Copper, and even Wrought Iron in this space. Mixing metals may sound challenging to some, but it is such a great look! Take a look at another past project feature that blends copper, stainless, bronze and even black stainless all in one kitchen space!

Nothing can compare to the look and history that natural stone can bring to a project. As hard as engineered surface products are trying (and they are) to recreate the look of a natural stone, they will never rebuild the unique history each slab holds. This kitchen includes countertops in Desert Beach granite with a chiseled edge profile applied.

This edge detail is not for everyone, or every project. Here it adds the perfect blend of rugged and rustic to a smooth and polished stone surface. The wall surface in the kitchen was another area available for a new texture to be introduced. With so much movement and natural veining to the granite counters, a more controlled and consistent color in a wall surface was needed.

Travertine 3×6 tiles in the color “Light Noche” add a storied texture to the kitchen walls. Travertine is a tile that is often overlooked for transitional spaces but it deserves it’s spotlight here. This textured and tumbled tile can work in many styles including Italianate, heavy traditional, modern farmhouse, and Spanish-styled spaces. In this high-ceiling kitchen, we had the tilers install the Travertine to the top of the kitchen cabinet line. The Stainless canopy hood is installed over the surface.

Cooking with a gas is ideal for any busy kitchen and this cooktop is ready for any task! A five burner gas cooktop layout with continuous grates allow you to shift BTUs quickly and even slide a pan to another location. This cooktop measures 30″ wide and can be installed into a cooktop cabinet. Here we used a “reversed” base layout giving open cabinet doors above and a usable lower drawer below. Your appliance salesperson at Village Home Stores will work closely with your cabinet designer to check that the correct finished look is achieved. The same is the case for wall ovens.

A 30″ wide Combination Wall Oven and Microwave is a great choice for those who want the option of an occasional second wall oven. The top microwave section of this unit can be used to bake smaller single-dish items. Built-in appliances give such a customized look and can really help your kitchen layout look and function at it’s best. Installing the microwave as a wall oven here allows our design to include the chimney hood above the cooktop. We even gave the refrigerator a built-in look.

In certain remodels and in most new construction homes we have the ability to communicate with the contractors that we would like to recess the refrigerator back a few inches. This allows our clients to select standard-depth refrigerators and get the look of a counter-depth in the end. Here we have done just that and paneled the right end for a fully surrounded look. On the left of the refrigerator is tall pantry cabinet…

… a pantry cabinet front that is! These doors open to a walk-in pantry entrance that is behind the pantry doors AND behind refrigerator area in this home. Kitchen storage goals for sure! Truly this open concept is “goals” for many of our readers. Imagine entertaining friends and family in this gorgeous new home. We must give a shout out to the true “MVP” surface for all of these spaces, the stunning Hickory hardwood flooring from our Paramount line! Another blend of woods can be found with the statement ceiling in the living room. Dark Walnut blades on this fan pick up the darkest of the wood stains and grain in the overall space. We have a lot of fans installed in our showroom to help you decide the right size and style of fan for your own home.

Edgebrooke Homes- Kitchen With Blue Island in Bettendorf, Iowa

Blue cabinetry is having more than just a “moment” in the Kitchen and Bath industry! We have installed so many stunning spaces over the past fews years that have introduced a painted blue finish and now it is become such a staple option for Transitional, Scandinavian, and Modern Farmhouse styled spaces. Blue cabinetry is forecasted to remain an accent color for many years to come. Our Koch Classic Cabinetry line makes a neutral blue-gray paint called “Charcoal Blue” and it truly makes a great statement as the island finish in this Bettendorf, Iowa kitchen. Blue and white cabinet kitchen in Bettendorf, Iowa home. The main kitchen perimeter is a “White” painted cabinetry in the same “Bristol” doorstyle as the kitchen island. Staggered heights and depths of wall cabinetry can help to add interest to a kitchen design that has tall ceilings. This kitchen also includes two heights for casual dining. A large dinette area at dining height, and a single-level kitchen island extends to add more seating at the island. Blue and white kitchen with dining and kitchen island seating in a Bettendorf, Iowa home. The pantry and refrigerator wall of the kitchen actually conceals a hidden feature. The pantry doors open to reveal access to the large walk-in pantry space that turns the corner behind the wall of cabinetry. This same look can be applied in a remodel situation with existing closets or unique spaces. Ask your designer at Village Home Stores how we can include one in your own design. Walk-through pantry front in a Bettendorf, Iowa kitchen. The tall pantry cabinet is balanced by the refrigerator surround on the opposite end of this wall. Also included on this wall is a microwave drawer unit. Microwave drawers are a great way to keep the microwave appliance off of the counter and reachable for any users. Another great location for a microwave drawer is in a kitchen island. This section of the featured kitchen creates a great landing space of countertop for loading and unloading the refrigerator and also a work surface for microwave use and food prep. Sharp microwave drawer in a Bettendorf, Iowa kitchen. Counter depth refrigerator models can really help you so much when the design demands it for traffic paths and space allowances. In this kitchen, a standard depth unit works perfectly “built-in” against the wall on one side and with a tall, deep panel on the other. A deep cabinet above completes the look. The 36″ wide Whirlpool model fits and offers so much great storage. It also stays looking great with a Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel finish that easily wipes clean. Whirlpool WRF555SDFZ French Door Refrigerator in a Bettendorf, Iowa kitchen. The kitchen island includes the kitchen sink and a Whirlpool dishwasher. This dishwasher is quiet at just 47 decibels (normal conversation is at about 50 dba). A TotalCoverage Spray Arm cleans with twice the jets as usual and an In-Door Silverware Basket frees up rack space by easily fitting on the front of the lower rack or in the door to make room for more dishes. Charcoal Blue painted kitchen island and Whirlpool dishwasher in a Bettendorf, Iowa home. “Depth” of Knowledge- Counter VS. Standard Depth Refrigeration

As we work on a kitchen design with a customer, there are many questions to be answered. Questions from you about options and what comes next, plus many questions from our design team involving preference and need as we work through our process. During the design and selection stage of a project however, there will be some questions that do leave this team at a brief crossroads until a decision is made. One key detail questions you may hear early on from us is “will you be including a standard or counter-depth refrigerator in the new kitchen?”

Example of a standard depth refrigerator installed in a Quad Cities kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com
Don’t worry if this detail isn’t something that was even on your radar until just now (standard model shown above). There is no one single industry standard for refrigerator depth. The only definite factor is refrigerators are getting deeper and taller as the demand for maximum storage increases.  For decades and decades, counter-depth refrigerators were only available in extremely high-end and built-in situations. Example of a standard depth refrigerator projecting into the kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

This is no longer the case. The cleaner, more customized look of a counter-depth refrigerator makes it the most desired look for kitchen designs. This demand has made manufacturers respond with counter-depth models coming in at a variety of price points. If the phrase “counter-depth” has you seeing dollar signs, don’t worry! There may be a counter-depth model that does fit within your appliance budget! But does your design demand it?Example of a counter depth refrigerator installed in a kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

So What Are The Differences In Refrigerator Depths?

Refrigerator depth doesn’t seem like that large of a detail when you first consider it. In kitchen design every fraction of an inch needs to be considered. That is the case for cabinetry solutions as well as the appliance package included. The kitchen below showcases a standard depth refrigerator installed. Example of a standard depth refrigerator installed in a Quad Cities kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

This design above warrants no need for a counter-depth and the look is still magazine-cover worthy. Of course a counter-depth model would have looked great! Just less of the sides, or “cabinet” of the unit would show. Let’s discuss now some of those key differences between standard and counter-depth models:

  • Standard could mean the unit “sticks out” an extra 4″ or more into the kitchen. That could be noticeable in some designs and even restrict a walkway in others.
  • Cubic foot capacity will always be a main feature difference. A model that boasts the largest cubic footage of storage space will most certainly never fall into a counter-depth category.
  • Counter-depth models have limited water and ice options. Limited interior space means that some water and ice features are best suited for standard-depth models. We will discuss the topic later in this post.
  • Price used to be one of the main differences in upgrading to a counter-depth feature. Price isn’t necessarily as big of a difference as it used to be. Now many counter-depth models fit within the same price category as high-featured standard depth models.

If I Choose a Counter-Depth Model What Can I Expect?

Of course newer standard-depth models will always offer the latest and greatest in storage solutions and features. Now as more counter-depth models are introduced, many of those same features are being included in models as they are launched. This means that all of the best features and benefits are not limited only to standard-depth models. refrigerator

In fact many times innovation is pushed forward to meet the challenge of a counter-depth model.  The issue of an in-door ice unit being so large it takes up nearly 1/3 of the fresh food storage space has lead to the need to streamline the design. Now the smaller, compact units are included in standard and counter-depth models alike! Some counter-depth models may replace an in-door option with an icemaker in the lower freezer and interior water dispenser above (shown below).Example of an internal water dispenser in refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com

Side by side refrigeration is no longer the most desired layout for storage so most of the newer models launching are French door units with a bottom freezer.  While it isn’t the best storage layout for most lifestyles, side-by-side counter-depth refrigerators remain to be the lowest prices. Bottom-freezer models are constructed with a completely different design and parts. This keeps them beginning slightly higher in price from a side-by-side construction.  Village Home Stores offering cabinet depth refrigerators. | VillageHomeStores.com

Busy kitchens require maximum fresh food and freezer storage no matter what depth you choose. Our expert appliance sales team can show you all of the amazing interior features your refrigerator will have. We can help you select the perfect model for your lifestyle. If the look of your refrigeration unit is important to your design, you may want a more built-in look.

How Can I Get A “Built-In” Look?

You have many options for how you can choose to surround your refrigerator in a cabinet design. No matter the depth of your model, you need at least 1/2″ on each side and above the unit for proper ventilation. An exception to this is the category of truly “built-in” refrigeration (shown below). Built-in refrigeration options installed at counter depth. | VillageHomeStores.com

A trim kit is installed surrounding the unit for a custom fit. It is important to note that while counter-depth models offer a more built-in look, they still may show some of depth projecting from your cabinets. The only way to avoid that is to select from our built-in models. If your layout allows it, you may be able to include a recessed area on your wall for your refrigerator to set back into. This allows you the look of a counter-depth model but the choice of using any standard model. Building a niche in your wall for the depth of a standard refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com
The surrounding cabinetry can either be pulled forward to give the illusion of a built in look or ordered deeper from the factory.  These recessed spaces are a wonderful solution and when planned correctly with your design team it’s a great look! Be sure to check out our Houzz ideabook including more examples of all of these concepts. Find that ideaboook here on our Houzz pageshallow-depth-fridge

In this case, we are just collecting information from you and getting everyone on the same page that will be involved on your project. It is our job to keep all of these details in order as we work through our process for your project at Village Home Stores. So what is black and white and gold all over? This perfectly on-trend kitchen remodel in Coal Valley, IL. A Transitional style space that is tasteful and right on trend! We originally met with this customer about estimating design and materials for her brand new home. Instead she ended up finding a great existing home opportunity in Coal Valley, IL. She then began working with us to remodel this home completely to now reflect her own taste and personality.

The home was in great shape and already had a very functional layout to work with. The 1990’s finishes however, were ready for an update. Medium Oak cabinetry, laminate counters, and beige paint graces every room. Here is a peek at the original kitchen that included a peninsula and white appliances. There was already a space adjacent to the kitchen for a dining area.

This customer worked closely with a team from Village Home Stores and her own contractors to take the 90’s property not only up to date… but magazine cover worthy! In this case, the tastes of our client were sophisticated and stylish!

Two-tone kitchen design has seen some major shifts over the past few years. Originally, the most comfortable way to two-tone a kitchen design has been to add a second finish to a freestanding kitchen island. A refreshing new approach has been to install a dark base cabinet and a lighter upper cabinet in a design. We see this with darker graphite grays, blacks, and even navy blue.
Black base cabinets and White upper cabinets paired with quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.comPainted black and white cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Savannah” door is complimented with a Cararra Marble backsplash in a herringbone pattern. A single-level island in the center of the design seemed to almost appear to be wrapped in ribbon. That ribboned look is a waterfalling quartz installation. Hanstone quartz “Tranquility” is installed as the island countertop and the perimeter is a solid white “Royale Blanc” design.

With the peninsula now removed, that left plenty of room for a large island to stretch the full length of the kitchen. A Microwave drawer by Sharp® is at the center with a large drawer below. The microwave is surrounded by wide drawer stacks and added storage and a pullout waste basket on the end near the sink.

Cascading/waterfalling your countertops could become the jaw-dropping statement-maker you are looking for! We recently installed our new front desk area to include multiple waterfall counters and all of our showroom guest love the look. See those tops here in a past blog post.

With the quartz counters “wrapping” each end of the island, that doesn’t leave a great space to include an outlet. A large island like this in a great room space demands entertaining guest. Can’t you just picture this place full for a Holiday get-together? Power is needed for small appliances or even charging electronics when working from the island seating. We concealed the outlet right on the end beneath the decorative corner detail. The matte black outlet and cover blend perfectly. The kitchen island seats four and the nearby Dining area can accommodate more formal Dining guests. A 6-light gold orb fixture by Quorum hangs above the large dining table.

Not only did this client have a very clear idea of her own personal style, she was incredibly organized with her inspirations! If you are dreaming of a new kitchen but know it will be a few years down the road, start honing your own tastes and inspirations now! Not only did this client come to us with a contagious enthusiasm, she also came with binders full of ripped out magazine photos, Pinterest boards, and even Houzz ideabooks. The open shelf wall of her design came inspired by an instagram post by Kristin on the Bliss at Home blog.

We think this corner of the kitchen design is such a beautiful way to add a space to personalize and customize the kitchen throughout the year. The Cararra Marble herringbone backsplash tile is installed from countertop to ceiling. This tile from Epic Stone adds texture and detail without being a distraction or too busy. Marble cut into small tiles provides a timeless tone-on-tone look.

The gold shelf brackets are just one of the many gold accents throughout the space. The custom shelves are an Oak wood that has been charred. Charred or blackened wood accents are beginning to become a huge home accessories trend and we love introducing this look into the kitchen. The Japanese charred wood technique is called Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi.

The charred wood compliments the Black painted base cabinets so well and adds another unique texture to the design. The finishes are not the only thing that saw an update. Our adorne® collection of outlets and switches from legrand® add fuction and style to the space. Take a look at this great pop-out outlet below the open shelves.

Power when needed and concealed and stylish when not in use. Plus this single outlet packs a lot of power. This single pop-out includes 4 outlets! A brushed gold kitchen faucet adds another place for that pop of gold accent. This faucet also has a pull-out spray wand.

Selecting a accent color is only half of the process of executing it well. Accenting is all about balancing scale and locations of your colors. This kitchen includes pops of gold found in the lighting, hardware, and accessories. The underside of the kitchen island pendants give a peek-a-boo approach to the accent. These pendants are named “Placuna” and come from our Uttermost line.

Due to the large size of the new kitchen window, a single light wouldn’t seem appropriate. Two 10″ wide Kichler “Maclain” pendants hang framing in the sink area. The same legrand series that makes the pop-out outlet mentioned above also offers a modular undercabinet system. This unique system of lighting, outlets, and electronic docking accessories can be customized and changed to accommodate the kitchen needs.

All of the outlet and USB boxes can be pulled and moved to other locations. There are also bluetooth speaker inserts and accessories like this tablet dock. The look is sleek and best of all?, it allows your backsplash tile to spread the full height without being disrupted or distracted by an outlet. For kitchens including a full-height stone or quartz backsplash this system can really be a fantastic solution!

The painted black cabinets from the bases of the kitchen design are repeated in the taller elements of the kitchen. This looks especially stunning because of the new appliances included from KitchenAid®. A french door counter-depth refrigerator and double wall oven have been built-in to a painted black cabinet surround. The appliances are in the innovative and stylish Black Stainless Steel finish by KitchenAid®. This finish is a true Stainless Steel and the fingerprint-resistant finish creates a matte black look that pairs perfectly with this cabinet choice.

Black Stainless appliances are accented with chrome and Stainless details. This makes them pair well with other metal finishes in a complete design. This kitchen includes a Stainless cooktop and microwave drawer. The kitchen faucet and lighting above the sink are also a brushed golden finish that helps to compliment the stainless texture of the appliances. See another great example of mixed metals including Black Stainless here in a past blog post.

Of course any dream kitchen must include storage wish-list cabinets. Slide-out shelves, post and pans drawers, and a pull-out spice rack are among some of the inserts included in the design. We love how keeping the darker finish on the base cabinets helps to keep the overall space light and airy.

Village Home Stores also offers a full line of custom blinds and shades for your home. This wide new kitchen window has been fit with our Oxford House® “Transitions” shade.  While being operated the wide, horizontal stripes overlap to offer an open or closed look even when the shade is down. The shade is the “Dixie White” finish.

When we went to visit this finished kitchen to photograph it we noticed a little dish by the kitchen sink. It has a gold-winged flying pig attached to it. The client quickly said “Oh that? My friends and I always joked I would get the dream kitchen I had been planning in my head for year when pigs fly” Well don’t look now but there is a flying pig in her kitchen because it has happened! Painted white cabinetry from our Koch Classic line has been installed in the “Savannah” doorstyle along the kitchen perimeter. Gray “Stone” stained Birch cabinets in the same doorstyle create a unique island design. Surrounding the gas cooktop area is a stunning hood design including carved brackets, glass-door cabinets and a section of cabinets that extend all the way down to the counters. These two narrow cabinets that frame in the cooktop area are actually pullout spice racks:

Bathroom vanity areas can also be wonderful locations for pullout storage for cosmetics or hair appliances. Press play below to see these pullout spice racks transform from accessibly and convenient to completely concealed

The 30″ gas cooktop by KitchenAid® is a 5-burner layout with full-width cast iron grates. The tile backsplash throughout the kitchen is a stylish elongated tile with texture. Other features include KitchenAid®’s PrintSheild™ finish to help resist smudges and fingerprinting and a 3-tier self-closing freezer drawer. There are so many incredible other features that you just have to see in person to experience. One of our favorites is a small removable prep zone tray that can be used for all kinds of prep including marinating meats or taken directly from the refrigerator to the oven.

A large, single-level island sits at the very center of the kitchen design. The quartz counters on the island and perimeter are a color named “Fossil Gray”. The island includes an undermounted sink with dishwasher within reach. There are outlets on each end of the kitchen island.

Stained panels and trim have been applied to the back of the island and two newel posts have been includes as “legs” for the island. These legs and contrasting finish to the kitchen perimeter help to give the kitchen island a furniture look. A wide plank of trim spreads from leg-to-leg as an apron to help give the island a more solid look.

All of this rests atop a stunning engineered Hickory floor from our Hallmark Floors line. Varied widths of 4″,6″,and 8″ from Hallmark’s Monterey Collection in the “Gaucho” color. These Hickory floors are installed throughout the Great Room, down the hall, and as the stair landing. The lighting for this kitchen is a great example of scale and style. The Kichler “Larkin” is a 3-light pendant and the traditional lantern shape is updated with a modern finish and exposed bulbs without glass.

One pendant hangs in the Dinette. Instead of selecting a complimenting island light, the same light is used. This helps create a great rhythm to the finished design. The scale of two pendants above this island is perfect and these fixtures can be looked at or through to help showcase the overall space.
