Geneseo, IL- Historic Home Remodeled and Updated With Nods to History.

When you remodel a home you are writing a part of its history. Every renovation, small or large, becomes an entry into the timeline of that property. Many times our client’s personal style choices drive the selections and design decisions entirely. In a historic home the home itself also influences decisions. When our expert kitchen remodeling team takes on a project in a Historical property, we are so honored to become a part of that history.Historic home deserve expert design and craftsmanship. This historic home in Geneseo, IL has seen many changes to the property over time including kitchen renovations. The most recent remodel we just completed at the home allowed the owners to update the layout, function, and working elements of the kitchen without losing the historic character that the space deserves. Allow us to show you around this beautiful new space…Kitchen remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores in a Historic Geneseo, IL home. True of many older homes, there are doorways and unique wall spaces to consider when laying out the new design. The completed new layout now includes a back wall with the cooking center, refrigerator wall with pantry area, single-level island with sink, and a new hutch area. The contrast from before to after below showcases that a shift in material selection alone can make any space seem brighter and larger.

Before and after from a Historic homes remodel. Kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

The new kitchen seems much larger than the original but no walls were removed. In fact we ADDED many cabinets to this kitchen. Including a new lighting plan and selecting brighter finishes help to make the space seem spacious and timeless. As you can see in the image below, the cabinetry now also extends all the way to the ceiling for a more customized and built-in look.

A flat-panel white kitchen cabinet remains the most classic of choices for all tastes and styles. Here in a historic property it looks right at home. This kitchen includes cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the Prairie Door and Shaker edge profile. The main kitchen cabinets are in the painted “White” finish by Koch. Because of other molding details in the home, a traditional crown molding profile was used where the cabinets meet the ceiling.

A custom wood hood is installed above the range and the addition of a mantle area/shelf allows for decor to be added.Just beyond the main cooking center wall is an area of the kitchen that has been transformed completely. So long alcove with open shelves…. and hello gorgeous new built-in hutch! This little corner of the kitchen may be our favorite part of the new design. A combination of glass doors and open shelves, all illuminated by our Diode LED lighting system.
Before and after from a Historic homes remodel. New hutch area installed as part of kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

This Diode system has been installed throughout the kitchen as undercabinet lighting. The same low-profile, low-voltage lighting is also installed in the glass-door and open shelf cabinets! We realize we sound like a broken record in every feature when we talk about this lighting but trust us it is a key player in why projects like these look so great! Including this lighting is such an important part of showcasing the investments you have made into your home.

Once installed, the lighting becomes the perfect task or ambient light. It uses very little energy and the look is great day or night. For instance, these images were taken during the day and the lighting STILL makes a big difference even with daylight coming in the windows. Another design detail that gives a historic look are the “clerestory” glass cabinet doors. The cabinets surrounding the hood have the top section cut for glass and become a great space for display without distracting from the hood itself.

Of course classic white subway tile is always a great material for any historic home. Another nod to the history of the home is the use of moldings and decorative detail. This kitchen is a very bright and clean look. The look can be achieved and still include details like supports or corbels. Not all of these details are heavy carved or scrolled wooden elements. In this case, a subtle style of mantle bracket was selected that complements the cabinet doorstyle.

A large single-level island is in the center of the kitchen and is now home to the kitchen sink and dishwasher. There is a curved overhang area for seating on the back side. Modern upgrades and updates should always be considered when remodeling. Ask yourself what suits your lifestyle and could make your enjoyment of the space even better? An upgrade as simple as this garbage disposal button may be something your become thankful for daily.

The low-profile of the button helps to keep it from being noticed unless you are really a user at the sink. The apron farmsink has found its way to be included in many styles of kitchen spaces within the past few years. Where it began it’s demand and influence is from projects just like this one. An old-world look inspired by large cast-iron farmsinks. We love the look of this Kohler Whitehaven sink.

The Vicksburg Door with Shaker edge is installed in a Rustic Hickory wood and “Driftwood” finish. This soft gray stain looks great and allows the Hickory grain to be highlighted. The lighting above the kitchen island also helps to keep the kitchen feeling open and bright. Two pendants hang above the island in a polished nickel finish.
Kichler pendant lighting in remodeled kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

These Kichler lights are perfect. The finish of the lights allow light to bounce off of them and the open frame style of the lights allow your eye to look right through them. Polished chrome and nickel finishes blend very well with Stainless elements. Using a brushed light fixture may have suggested a more modern style for the space. Stainless Steel appliances in a white painted kitchen. Sharp microwave drawer and KitchenAid pro gas range. | VillageHomeStores.com

Of course many upgrades were brought in by replacing the appliances with a brand new KitchenAid suite with Sharp microwave drawer. The 36″ wide dual-fuel commercial style range is stunning in appearance and top-notch in features. KitchenAid does a fantastic job of bringing professional-level features and benefits to you at a fraction of the price of other 36″ wide range options. Dual fuel gives you the precise control of a as cooktop with the consistent temperature control of an electric oven below.  Stainless Steel appliances in a white painted kitchen. Microwave drawers can really be the unsung heroes in spaces like this. Could you imagine this same wall of cabinetry with a microwave hood? Even a countertop microwave would distract from the finished look. Microwave drawers give a clean look and a functional upgrade. This 24″ wide flat-panel model blends really well with any Stainless Appliance suite. We managed this remodel from start to finish. Moline, IL- Kitchen Remodel Fully Managed From Start to Finish

This Moline, IL kitchen is a tale that we are sure many can relate to. The original kitchen cabinets were in a very functional layout but beginning to show the wear and tear of years of use. After years and years of “maybe someday I’ll replace them”… this Spring “someday” had finally come. beforeNow the kitchen is updated with new cabinetry plus we removed an entire wall to make room for an island in the new design. The original kitchen shared the same L-shaped layout but the opposite end had a corner of walls with just enough room for a small table and two chairs. Kitchen remodel in Moline, IL managed from start to finish. | VillageHomeStores.com

Now with one of those back walls removed, the kitchen is open and bright. Birch wood Cabinetry from our Koch classic line has been installed in the “Westbrook” door style. A “Chestnut” stain has been applied and a “Black” accent glaze highlights the door and trim details. Engineered Quartz countertops in the “Chakra Beige” design is a neutral tone-on-tone look.

Crown molding on kitchen cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.comThe spindle rail crown has been removed from the original kitchen. The new kitchen look is updated with “cove” crown molding. This crown is the perfect style and scale for the project. It even includes an area for the accent glaze to catch. With plenty of cabinet space within reach on each wall, an area above the cabinets is left to display items.

A white Whirlpool® range and microwave hood are also part of the new kitchen. Microwave hoods can save counterspace and be installed to vent out of the home or re-circulate the air. The original kitchen had just a range hood installed, now the microwave is off the counter.

The new electric range includes an easy-wipe ceramic glass cooktop. The most dramatic difference in the new kitchen came when we removed a wall that divided the kitchen from the dining room. Removing this one wall has helps this kitchen seem to grow in space even though it hasn’t extended any further into the dining room than before. The small table and chairs is now replaced with a large single-level kitchen island with seating for two comfortably.
Removing a wall in a kitchen can free up so much space! | VillageHomeStores.com

With open shelves installed on each end of the island, the largest base cabinet included faces in toward the kitchen sink. Behind the double doors of this cabinet are two slide-out shelves. The “ends” to each open shelf cabinets have been treated with “applied doors” on each side. This gives the illusion of doors and helps complete the look instead of just a smooth panel. The back of the island includes three applied doors and two wood decorative supports for the overhang.
Hallmark hardwood flooring. | Village Home Stores

The island is really the focal point of this new kitchen and the accent glaze highlights all of the details perfectly. While the island steal the show in the kitchen, the new hardwood Walnut flooring is now showcased through the entire upper level of this home. The Walnut hardwood in the “Saddle” finish is from our Hallmark Hardwood line. Read more about Hallmark and some of our other projects here at this link.

Flooring and remodel work in Moline, IL | VillageHomeStores.comThe hardwood flooring was not the only new flooring installed at this remodeled home. The split-foyer layout was given a whole new look right at the stairway leading up into the new hardwood open-concept. A new stair rail and banister were installed and carpeting from our Dixie Home line was put in on both sets of stairs. This carpet is from the “Rock Creek” series in the “Ginger color. It is a 100% Stainmaster® carpet that resists stains, abrasive wear over time, and even has anti-static protection. That means you reduce your chances of static shock. This textured carpet also includes Dixie Home’s texture retention technology meaning your texture/pattern will bounce back and keep it’s hold for a long time. Village Home Stores sells carpeting to both remodel and New Construction customers. So if you need a single room of carpet or a whole home, we have quality products and quality installation crews ready for the job! Village Home Stores is your expert choice of carpeting in the extended Quad Cities region. That is why our projects always include the following:Carpeting in the Quad Cities. | VillageHomeStores.com

This homeowner knew that she wanted to be sure to include our LED undercabinet lighting in her new kitchen. She had seen this system in our previous projects and on our TV show so it was at the top of her wish list for the new kitchen. That lighting was a great investment to help showcase her new subway tile backsplash in the kitchen. 3″ x 6″ glass tiles from our Jeffrey Court line in the “Buff” color are the perfect choice and pair perfectly with the countertops selected. We included the finished space in an episode of the Village Home Show. See a full video tour of this finished kitchen remodel by pressing play below.

Port Byron, IL- Bath Remodel Plays With Size and Pattern

Have you fallen in love with one tile….but then struggled to complete the look? Maybe that one tile is all you need! You don’t have to include a flashy mosaic accent, or mix multiple textures together to get a complete look. This Port Byron bath remodel is a wonderful example of how you can use the same tile but play with size and installation for a great look. Paramount’s “Urban Stone” series is used throughout the bathroom. Instead of covering the entire bath with the exact same tile, variations of sizes of tile are used but all in the “Cognac” color. The flooring, tub deck, threshold, shower base and walls are all tiled but with sizes varying from 1″ x 2″ to 12″ x 24″. Let our tile experts help you find the perfect material and install concept for your space. tile

When entering the new bathroom, you are greeted by a beautiful new bath vanity. This Furniture style sinktable is from our Bertch Bath line and is made not that far away from us in Waterloo, Iowa. The “Interlude” sinktable can be ordered in a variety of sizes, wood species, and finishes. A 30″ wide sinktable is installed here in a Hickory wood with “Brindle” stain applied. We love how this Brindle stain highlights the Hickory wood grain on the cabinet. An open shelf below can be left empty or used for linens or baskets of toiletries.

Bertch Bath wave bowl style. | VillageHomeStores.comBertch Bath also fabricates cultured marble vanity tops. This bathroom includes one from their faux granite series. The color is called “Concrete” and has been ordered in the Gloss finish. An integrated vanity sink is included in the mold used to form this top. The “Wave” bowl style is an updated new bowl option that looks stylish and sophisticated in this space.

Another updated detail is the use of a large-format tile in a newer size and shape. 12″ x 24″ sized tiles truly are pacing themselves to become “the new” 12″ x 12″ tile. Installed as the floor tile and horizontally for the wall of the new shower, the look is great! This Port Byron bathroom began as a large space, but was not using that space as smart as it could have been. There was a separate tub and shower area in the original bathroom, but that left a lot of open space in the center of the room. That suggested that there was plenty of space for something to be larger in the new design. Now the custom tiled shower is nearly three times the size of the original:
Custom tiled walk in shower. | VillageHomeStores.com

Did you notice that with the new layout a shower door isn’t needed? Step over the tiled threshold into the shower and the showerhead and controls all splash and spray into the back of the space. To help light pour into the shower, fixed panels of glass have been installed on the wall dividing the tub and shower and also the new wall on entry into the bathroom. These help create a “clerestory” window effect and brighten the space naturally while adding a custom look. glass_areasTiled shower niche. | VillageHomeStores.comDon’t forget to discuss with your designer at Village Home Stores where you will be keeping things in the new shower. Chances are your designer, tile salesperson, and even tile installer will suggest a tiled shelf or wall niche. It would be a shame to have a gorgeous new tiled shower customized to fit in your space and not include an option like this to customize your use of the space. Who wants to have to keep soaps and shampoos on the floor of the shower?! Be sure to check out this ideabook on our Houzz page showcasing other tiled showers. This ideabook includes shower niches, tiled shelves, and custom tiled benches we have posted from our past projects.

The tub area is no longer dark and crowded. Instead, a tiled tub deck seems to just be an extension of the custom shower. The same small-scale tile used as the shower floor is repeated as an accent surrounding the tub surround. Even with all of this medium-dark tile throughout, the bathroom layout keeps the space bright and feeling open.

East Moline Remodel: A Bright and Beautiful Before & After

This East Moline, IL kitchen has been given a whole new look and layout. It is always so amazing when just a few location changes in a layout can make such a big difference for our clients. Look at how bright, beautiful, and inviting this new kitchen is.
East Moline kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Before we show you around the new space let’s look at the “Before” part of this story. Like many kitchens in the area, this original space had soffits above the wall cabinetry. This was the desired look at the time the original kitchen was installed. A peninsula divided the kitchen area from the nearby dining space. A soffit and suspended wall cabinets hung and acted as a visual divider between the two spaces. This layout not only blocks traffic in a very busy area of the home, it also blocks a lot of light and sight from the kitchen into the nearby rooms.
before_photo

The new kitchen layout includes an island centered in the space and removes the peninsula. Now the kitchen, casual dining, and living room areas seem to be all one collective space with a more open concept. island_walkway

A large bi-fold pantry area was native to the original space. This pantry offers a lot of storage without intruding on the pathway from the formal dining room into the kitchen. The new kitchen island was ordered in a finish to best compliment the medium oak stain on the pantry doors and trim.
Oak island kitchen cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.com

Koch Classic’s “Acorn” stain has been applied to a Red Oak wood. There could’t be a better complimentary finish to match the existing woodwork.  The island offers two large drawer stacks with a pull-out waste basket in the center.
wainscot

There is a lot to be said about creating a kitchen design that hosts an island without a sink or cooktop included in it.  Think about how wonderful it would be to always have access to a large clear space to work on any type of project throughout the day. Including an Engineered Quartz countertop as the worksurface in the kitchen makes it a non-porous and durable surface to work on as well. This color is called “Paydirt” from our Klondike series of quartz. A “Beveled” edge profile has been applied to the quartz. The cooking zone of the kitchen design is home to a freestanding slide-in gas range with convection and microwave hood by Whirlpool®.
5-burner slide-in gas range in stainless steel. | VillageHomeStores.com

Replacing the older installation style that required a “sill” or “brace” of countertop behind the unit, these new ranges look sleek and built-in. The new freestanding models include front controls on the electric and gas units and a full-depth construction so they rest flush against the back wall. Your current freestanding range can be replaced with one of these units for a customized look. Any standard 30″ wide opening can accommodate one.
5 burner gas cooktop by Whirlpool. | VillageHomeStores.com

Even with a standard 30″ wide unit, a 5-burner cooktop can be included. Full-width cast iron grates allow you to easily slide pots and pans from one burner to another. The grates are dishwasher safe, and their satin finish resists wear and tear. Read more about some of the incredible features (like rapid preheat) and sleek new design of these full-depth ranges here on a previous blog post. The backsplash tile in this new kitchen draws your attention immediately. Travertine 3″ x 6″ tumbled tile in a natural “Light Noche” color from Daltile has been paired with a deco line of Peitra Art’s  “Bliss Cappuccino” tiles:
tile_backsplash

travertine_tileTake note that tumbled stone tiles like this Travertine can be installed and grouted to have two different finished looks. You can leave the natural characteristics of the tiles showing (shown to the right) or choose to fill in the gaps and crevasses with your grout. Be sure to discuss the finished look you are after with your tile installer before they begin the project. The texture and style that this backsplash adds to the finished space is showcased by our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system. We have found that this lighting system is a key element to a successful finished remodel project. Our customers are always so glad that they included it in their design. Even during the daytime hours, it is difficult to imagine this kitchen without that backsplash and countertop getting the lighting they deserve. Press play below to see how lost the tile looks when the lights turn off.

The Project Management team replaced the original kitchen window with a new double-hung unit. The main perimeter cabinetry for the kitchen is a bright painted finish called “Pearl”. An “Umber” highlight glaze has been applied to the “Seneca” doorstyle. Soffits have been removed and the new wall cabinets stretch all the way to the ceiling with crown molding applied at the top. This grants more available storage space in the wall cabinets and an updated look.
East Moline kitchen remodel. | VillageHomeStores.com

The new layout feels far less cramped now that the peninsula doesn’t cut off the kitchen from the rest of the room. It is as though the same counter space from the original kitchen peninsula has been shifted into an island top that is now easier to access and use for many tasks. The kitchen sink on the perimeter of the kitchen is an under-mounted model by Blanco in a “Truffle” finish. A 50/50 split layout (shown below) is just one of the many options you have available to choose from when selecting an under-mount sinks.
Blanco sink truffle color. | VillageHomeStores.com

The island has been finished off with an applied door look on each end and spanning the full back panel side of the island. That same treatment has been applied to the refrigerator end panel that caps off the end of the new kitchen. This end treatment option creates such a polished and customized look. A smooth end panel would not give the opportunity for any of the highlight glaze to be applied. With the sunlight that pours in from a set of french doors next to it, this paneled look is a perfect detail!
Refrigerator end panel. | VillageHomeStores.com

The refrigerator was moved to this new location from the opposite corner. Now the cooking center is open and not crowded. There is plenty of landing space to load and unload the refrigerator. New flooring was installed in the living room and the new kitchen. Luxury Vinyl Tile by Mannington called “Corsica Cavern” perfectly ties all of the kitchen finishes together and warms up the space. LVT gives you the look of ceramic tile but a softer surface to work on and warmer to your bare feet. Learn more about LVT here on a previous blog post.

East Moline, IL – A Family Home Updated

kitchen_remodel_e_molineThis kitchen remodel in East Moline isn’t just a typical Before & After story. One of the homeowners of this project has many memories in the original kitchen… he grew up in this house!

Speaking of water, let’s visit the kitchen sink. The farmhouse style sink you saw in the first photo is a large single-well unit. This 30″ wide model is undermounted to the Cambria counters for a clean look and an easy clean swipe from the counter to the sink when cleaning. It is hard to imagine anything could steal attention from a beautiful farm sink in a new kitchen… but these custom blinds almost steal the show!

Another update to a timeless look is the backsplash tile used. In place of a solid white subway tile, this Glazzio glass tile from the “Glacier” series was installed. The classic shape and pattern or a Subway tile but in a glass tile. The glass is a perfect texture to help highlight the sparkle that Cambria’s “Whitney” quartz has. Cambria quartz "Whitney" design. | VillageHomeStores.com

The sparkle of the Cambria tops gives an incredibly upscale look. As you walk past it in person, the light catches the flecks and sparkles. The crystals in the chandeliers paired with the glass tiles… it’s the perfect hint of bling to dress up this kitchen.

We have to also mention this Whirlpool gas range. Replacing the older “slide-in” models, this new full-depth front-control range can fit in any existing opening for a freestanding range. With no back control panel, the look is clean and seamless. This range is a great choice when you want your backsplash tile to have the full height of space to be shown off. Other features like fan convection, rapid preheat, and even frozen bake make this one of our personal favorites.

Bettendorf Bathroom Remodel: Master Bath Rejuvenated

bathroom_remodel_bettendorf

Starting 2016 off…in the bathroom? Well, we figured there is no better place to start the year of featured projects than where you start your own day… the bathroom! bow front vanity by Bertch Bath. | VillageHomeStores.com

It’s where you begin and end your day. If your home layout includes a Master Suite, your Master Bath can be a true escape from the rest of the home. What good is it to have a Master Suite with a bathroom that isn’t really functional for your own needs? That was the case for this Bettendorf family.
Bathroom remodel in Bettendorf, IA. | VillageHomeStores.com

A big bright space to work with but an original layout that just wasn’t the best for them. For example, if you look above at the before and after of the exterior vanity area just outside of the bathroom you see a sink. That was the original Master Bath. While having a vanity sink in your main master bedroom may work in a Hotel type setting… at home, it wasn’t ideal. The new layout added not just one but two vanity sinks and both now live in the Master Bath itself.
Bow front vanity cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.com

This double bowl vanity configuration includes vanity cabinets from our Bertch Bath line. The transitional style of the “Osage” door can be ordered in a number of woods and finishes. Shown here in the Birch wood and “Brindle” finish is by far it’s most popular combination. The option to remove the toespace and add “feet” to any cabinet can be a great look. It takes a cabinet and gives it a real furniture-style look. You have a choice of 4 wooden and 3 metal feet  within the Bertch line. This configuration is compiled by two sink bases and a drawer stack in the center.
Bertch Bath Osage Brindle bow front vanity. | VillageHomeStores.com

Another look that can really dress up your cabinetry and countertop in a bathroom is to consider a “bow-front” cabinet. Each of the sinkbases used in this Bettendorf Bath were ordered with a bow-front. This subtle curve mimics a chest of drawers or a formal sideboard cabinet. The added curves to the vanity top also helps the long double bowl vanity look less basic and instead stunning as your first view on entering the Bath.

Just outside of the Master Bath entrance is that original location for the vanity sink. The new design has transformed this into a more traditional sink-less vanity area that can be used as a landing space or a hair and makeup station. This exterior vanity has a wood top which makes the cabinet seem more formal and at home in the nook of the Master Bedroom.showerbeforeandafterIf you look at the first Before/After image we shared at the beginning of this post, you can see the original Bath had a small shower in the front corner of the space. On the opposite end of the Bath was a large soaking Jacuzzi tub with a window above. With a tub/shower unit in the Bath just next door to this Master Bath, the new design now includes one large walk-in shower. With the shower-head section of the shower concealed with glass, no door is needed on the opposite end. Just an open entrance. The homeowner did mention that she loves the decision they made to located the shower controls near the entrance to the shower. This makes it easy to turn on the water to warm up and shut down on exiting.
bathremodel

We more and more of this in both new homes and remodels. use that space to give yourself a spacious and serene custom tiled shower. Our crews built a half-wall to divide the bathroom vanity area from the shower. This wall allowed a location for the glass installers to place an Oil-Rubbed Bronze channel to fix the glass into.
Custom tiled shower in Bettendorf bathroom remodel | VillageHomeStores.com

On the side of that half-wall that faces the shower user we included a custom tiled niche. This space can now house toiletries within reach of the user and also keep them out of sight. By designing a custom tiled shower in your space in place of a freestanding shower unit, you can customize your experience and get a look perfect for your room.
custom_tile_shower

Inside of that niche is the same glass mosaic tile used as a backsplash above the bathroom vanity top and as an accent strip surrounding the entire shower. Bathrooms are a perfect location to include a mosaic accent because they can truly help tie everything together.
glass_tile

Let’s all give a round of applause to the son of this couple who helped them find the perfect tile! Seriously folks, let your kids participate in the selection process they may really love it!  This mosaic from our Jeffery Court collection perfectly ties the main tile, vanity, fixtures, and paint color together! Hanstone quartz Royal Blanc. | VillageHomeStores.com

The countertop for the double vanity is an Engineered Quartz by Hanstone. The “Royal Blanc” quartz and undermount white oval bowls looks perfectly at home in the space and don’t distract from the rest of the finishes. Oil-Rubbed Bronze fixtures and lighting are a great compliment to the wood vanity. Rock Island Bath Remodel: A Snowy Winter Palette

cambria_quartz_rock_islandWith our very first snowstorm of 2015 on the way to the area, we thought what better project feature to “snow” you in with than this Rock Island, IL bathroom remodel. We absolutely love the finishes this customer selected from our store to create an upscale look with touches of texture and sparkle we can’t wait for you to see.snow color palette | VillageHomeStores.com

Painted white cabinetry from our Koch line is accented with a grey “Smoke” glaze on all of the vanity edges. Large gray 12″ x 24″ floor tiles create the perfect base for the new bathroom. Polished chrome fixtures like the Delta “Vera” series faucets and shower fixtures are very sleek. The tile in the walk-in shower is what truly steals the show! Elongated glass subway tiles 4″ x 12″ in size are accented with waterfalling mosaics from Glazzio.shower

While the wall tiles look smooth and sleek, the floor of this custom shower has an added texture that does bring the outdoors in. Black “pebble” tiles from our Florida Tile line are grouted in place and give a foot massage to bare feet every time you use the shower.

cambria_whitney

You know that perfect sparkle of fresh snow? These Cambria Quartz “Whitney” counters have that same glimmer when the light hits them. That same glimmer can be found in the crystal-filled wall sconces from Golden Lighting. The “Alston Place” series is available in many different fixture configurations from this single sconce to large chandeliers. smoke_glaze

The double-bowl vanity is full of storage and that “Smoke” glaze really does highlight the details and compliment the other finishes in the bathroom. The shower itself was a unique space. originally tiled with a single size of powder blue ceramic, the new design is a stylish upgrade.beforeshower

When installing a custom-tiled shower, we are able to add storage niches and shelves and benches like the one shown here below. This new shower area was waterproofed and a custom wall niche and corner bench was installed. Pebble tile on base of shower floor. | VillageHomeStores.com

Bettendorf Remodel: So… What’s Your Angle?

Does your kitchen have a unique shape to the overall space? A not-so-square corner or an unused section of wall that you know could be part of your new kitchen? It is time to call in the the expert design team at Village Home Stores. We can make any standard shaped room look incredible and we can do exactly the same for “challenging” spaces. Not only did we address every angle, we included great storage within. See this kitchen featured in this episode of the Village Home Show in the video below.

The total transformation was amazing to share with you on our TV show. We hope you enjoy the more detailed tours and product features we can show you in this video format. before_photo

Not all homes include a rectangle or perfectly square space to work with.  For example, take a look at a birdseye view of the design for this featured kitchen. Kitchen Designer Quad CitiesNo, this image is not tilted, the kitchen in this beautiful Bettendorf home is in fact that shape. Not your typical U-shaped kitchen is it? If you are shopping for a single straight wall of cabinetry or a custom kitchen to fit a space like this. An expert is what you need. The expert design team at Village Home Stores can help you find the best working design for your home. No project is identical to another (we love this about our industry)! The new design you see here on the right is a solution for the space. The old kitchen layout was much more broken up. The original oak kitchen (shown above and below) included drop-down ceiling soffits as well as a narrow corridor on the back end of the kitchen created by tall cabinetry. Behind the original refrigerator location was a second refrigerator, open shelf storage and a small pass-through window. The entire space seemed crowded and closed in.before

A very special area in the original kitchen was also in this back section of the original layout, the measuring wall. Many families have them, commonly in the kitchen. Where the growth of generations and generations of kids is documented. In this case it was on the side panel o a tall cabinet. A grandchild put up some signage on the day before tear-out was to begin…memories

She means it!!!! No worries reader, our carpenters were able to remove this panel (from the floor up for accurate measuring of course) and it is now safely in a new location of the home. Our family here at Village Home Stores know how important memories made in your home are to you. We aim to provide beautiful and functional new spaces to help you continue making memories in your home. The moment we snapped this photo of the measuring wall. was a touching reminder of that. And now…the tour! Let’s take a look around this incredible new space!white painted kitchen with subway tile.

The first thing you notice about this new kitchen is how open and bright it is. What was once an enclosed maze of cabinetry has been opened up into a bright and airy Transitional kitchen. Koch cabinetry in the “aspen” doorstyle painted white is paired with warm Hickory hardwood flooring. The countertops in this new space are a striking natural stone named “White Macaubus”. This neutral blend of whites, beige, and warm grays perfectly ties all of the other finishes together. Natural veining and character in the slabs looks right at home in this wooded lot that looks out over the Mississippi Valley below. We removed a large section of the dividing wall to help create this look. kitchen remodeler Quad Cities

Now you have a clear view into the kitchen and its full wall of floor-to-ceiling glass that looks out toward the swimming pool. The kitchen sink view is also more enjoyable now as the user faces the front of this wooded lot and can enjoy the entire panoramic view the Living Room windows offer. What grabs your attention first as you enter the new kitchen is the large handcrafted Hickory dining table and the lighting above it.painted white kitchen by Village Home Stores

This table (built by the talented homeowner we should add) comfortably seats 10 guests. While an island of a very decent size could have fit here, the owners really wanted to be able to enjoy the space and the views while dining and entertaining. So many incredible meals and many great conversations will now be shared within this kitchen. The two large pendant light fixtures above the table make quite the statement…kitchen lighting

…and when you sit down and look up, they make a whole new statement! Hammered copper with a gold interior, these lights are stunning! While your kitchen may not be large enough for two lights quite this size, consider the rhythm and balance that is brought to the space by having two lights above the table (or island if that is the case). A single, long fixture would have not been as dramatic as these lights.

unique lighting

The added surprise of the gold interior of these fixtures is what makes them so remarkable. We have many lighting options similar to these including the series shown above by Quorum that come in many sizes and with gold, silver, and copper interior options. White painted kitchenThe back wall of the kitchen is now home to the new KitchenAid 29 cubic foot french-door refrigerator. KitchenAid beverage coolerThis model offers maximum fresh food and freezer storage. The addition of a glass-front beverage cooler nearby helps free up a lot of shelf space in the main refrigerator. If your kitchen design allows it, this 24″ appliance can really be a game-changer for refrigeration. Imagine if the next time your were planning on entertaining, you could remove all of the cans, bottles, and boxes of beverages and instead have all of that shelf space for food items! That is a lot of shelf real estate that just opened up for you. It is also very wonderful to be able to allow guests to help themselves when they are over. A glass-front beverage cooler looks great and can also help way-finding when you are entertaining guests. We carry many makes and models of under-counter beverage coolers.broom closet in cabinetry

On the subject of added storage, take a look at this second pantry cabinet that was converted into a broom/utility closet. Adding a tall pantry cabinet for this function can help you have access to cleaning supplies right where you need them. With doors closed, you would never suspect it isn’t just pantry storage.

With the angle of the cooking and sink walls being an acute angle, a standard square lazy-susan cabinet would not fit or function for this kitchen. A blind corner cabinet with swing-out shelves is instead installed to make the most of a challenging area. When we asked the owner of this beautiful new kitchen what some of her favorite things about the new space were, she responded how much she loves her touch-activated faucet. touch faucet in kitchen

When working in the kitchen it is so easy to fall in love with this touch feature. This kitchen was completed using the full Project Management Program at Village Home Stores. This means that the entire remodel was handled from start to finish by a team of experts coordinated just for this project. Estimates, schedules, and quality work was all managed by Village Home Stores to help keep everything on schedule to completion. There is so much to talk about in this Bettendorf kitchen. We can’t wait to share a full video tour with you on an upcoming episode of the Village Home Show. This will be an episode you will not want to miss!Bettendorf kitchen remodel from Village Home Stores

Galva Remodel: Great Storage Made Stylish

Kitchen design. | VillageHomeStores.comGreat storage doesn’t have to be boring or sterile looking. This Galva kitchen is proof that great storage can be stylish, warm and inviting. Rustic Beech cabinetry and Silestone Quartz countertops make a stylish first impression and what hides inside of these cabinets gives amazing function to the space.Rustic Beech kitchen remodel in Galva, IL. | Village Home Stores

Updated materials and up-to-date storage solutions fill this new kitchen design. No extensive wall-work or major structural changes were made to the room. A similar layout to the original kitchen was recreated with better storage and updated materials in mind. before

Dated soffits above were removed and by keeping a similar layout to the original design, all of the current hook ups for the appliances were able to be used. An L-shaped layout with a peninsula extending from the back door entry provides plenty of countertop space. Here is a birdseye view of the new kitchen design.Kitchen design. | VillageHomeStores.com

With limited space near the sink, the dishwasher needs to be located in another area. Surrounded by base cabinets in the peninsula, the dishwasher is still within reach of a user loading from the sink. It is also important to note when looking at this layout from above that appliance doors need to have a clearance to openAllow space for dishwasher door to be open.. | VillageHomeStores.com

The location of this peninsula allows for the dishwasher door to be open and just enough room to make your way around the open door. The same can be said about the oven door right across from the dishwasher. pull-out trash in kitchen peninsula. | VillageHomeStores.comThe peninsula cabinets surrounding the dishwasher offer great storage within. A double-bin pullout trash cabinet is located to the right of the dishwasher and sliding shelves inside of the base cabinetry are adjustable to accommodate anything you would want to fit within the 24″ deep space inside. Having this long area of countertop right in the center of the new kitchen is absolutely perfect. This countertop is nothing you have to be careful with either. Silestone Quartz is a man-made engineered material that is ideal for busy kitchens and is even used in commercial kitchens. It is extremely durable and completely non-porous. Imagine how great this counter will be for rolling out Christmas cookies to cut and bake!Beaded back panel in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The back panel of this peninsula is a “beaded” or “beadboard” look. This gives the “Chocolate” accent glaze on the “Briarwood” finish a chance to stand out and add some interest to the view into the kitchen from the front entry. Luxury Vinyl Tile. | VillageHomeStores.comAnother important change to mention is the original kitchen had carpet located on the floor. New Luxury Vinyl Tile, or “LVT” has been installed with a grouted look. Still softer and warmer than ceramic tile, this material will be far easier to keep clean in the new kitchen. The refrigerator is located in the same area but has been given a more built-in appearance. With the refrigerator in clear view of both entrances into the kitchen, the designer from Village Home Stores didn’t want such a large appliance to distract from the amazing overall design. Refrigerator end panel full-depth. | VillageHomeStores.com

Refrigerator end panels were installed surrounding the new unit and capping off a deep wall cabinet above. The space allowance is now ideal for current refrigerator dimensions including height and depth. It might look like this is a counter-depth refrigerator but this is in fact a standard depth model. To achieve this look the end panels were ordered at a deeper dimension. You can notice the change in depth if you look at the base cabinets and counter to the left. Corner lazy Susan cabinet in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comWe mentioned this kitchen is full of great storage and of course any corner of a kitchen design needs to be used to its fullest potential. The easiest way to achieve full access to your corner space above and below your counter space is with Lazy Susan inserts. With the soffits above now removed, this allowed for the opportunity to add some style to the corner by making the upper cabinet taller and deeper. The original kitchen had a painted backsplash surface. The new look includes a tiled backsplash using an elongated field tile with glass “Tigereye” accents inserted. The tile is a perfect compliment to the Oil-Rubbed Bronze finishes throughout the new kitchen as well as the accent glaze on the cabinetry. Note the use of Bronze switchplate covers on the receptacles:Tile backsplash. | VillageHomeStores.com

This may seem like a silly thing to point out but imagine if bright white plates were used. That would distract instead of compliment the overall look. Above the original kitchen sink and below the drop-down soffit was a wood valance. Valances still continue to be a great way to complete an area surrounding a window. Our carpenters worked with the homeowner to create a valance-like installation above the window as a way to bridge the wall cabinets surrounding it.Use crown molding to create a valance look. | VillageHomeStores.com

The cabinet crown molding carries your eye across the window and helps anchor the wall cabinets above together. With limited space in the existing kitchen it can be a challenge to have enough pantry storage space. Our cabinet lines do offer tall pantry cabinets beginning as narrow as 9″ wide. The area to the left of the range is closer to 18″ wide and that would still make for a usable pantry cabinet but we came up with a different solution:Pantry storage ideas for the kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A base cabinet below with four adjustable sliding shelves provides 24″ deep storage space to move into. Four shelf spaces in the 12″ deep wall cabinet above can be used in a number of ways as well. The addition of a third cabinet here gives a visually full look to the space from floor to ceiling but the added bonus of counter space right in the center of the pantry area. What’s not to love about a kitchen made better? We thank this Galva, IL family for allowing us to help update their kitchen and also for letting us show you around.Village Home Stores 309.944.1344

Master Bath Remodel: Spa Day Can Be Every Day

titleWho says a staycation can be overrated? Not a chance when this Master Bathroom retreat is where you could book your spa day! Medium oak cabinetry, trim and doors were replaced with a cool, serene collection of finishes. White doors and trim create a high contrast to the dark cherry cabinetry installed into this relaxing new spa getaway in Colona, IL.

bathroom_vanity_Quad_Cities

Giving the look of a high-end hotel but with all of the extra storage needed, there are two identical vanities in the new space. Storage below in the vanities allows for a cleaner look to be applied to the space above them. A framed mirror in place of a medicine cabinet mirrors back the vanity directly across from it as well as all of the light throughout the bath.

bathroom_vanities_Quad_CitiesThe Cabinetry and framed mirrors where custom ordered from our Dura Supreme Cabinetry line in a dark cherry stain. Brushed hardware and the addition of decorative feet to the toespace help set off this look. “Gray Expo” Silestone quartz countertops with undermounted white bowls perfectly compliment the surrounding tile selections. Let’s take a look at what other details went into creating this serene new space.

Adorne square plugs by LeGrande. | VillageHomeStores.comYou may have noticed that there are not any boring white wall switches distracting from this gorgeous new space. Our Adorne® series of switches and plugs have been installed throughout this new Master bath as well as the Master Bedroom just outside of it.

Adorne switches in a remodeled Master Bathroom. | VillageHomeStores.comThis series allows you functions like pop-up outlets, wave-control switches and even U.S.B. charging stations all within a sleek square receptacle. Frame them in with one of their many plate choices or create your own custom wall plate. Get ready to start seeing more and more of our projects with these products they are truly amazing!

heated_floorsAn in-floor heating system has been installed beneath the new ceramic flooring. Cold bare feet are no match for this new cozy upgrade. What rests on these warm floor is the most inviting tub you could ask for.

Chandelier above the bathtub. | VillageHomeStores.comYour first view into this new space is of the new freestanding tub with an arched tray ceiling above. The previous tub dropped into a tiled platform and an oak apron filled this entire alcove. The same space is now open and outstanding!

tub_lightWhen you create such a perfectly framed space for a focal point you have to have just the right element to complete it. In this case it is the “Layla” hanging light fixture by Crystorama above the new tub.  Always remember that if you have an idea you have seen somewhere online or in a magazine, our team is always eager to see what inspires you and help include those things into your own design.

vanity_light With a light like the one above the tub, it is better to compliment it than compete with it for the remaining lighting. Knowing the vanity lights would be mounted on the mosaic tile and be within sight of the tub fixture, these lights from Feiss were a great choice. the same mosaic tile was installed in the wall shelf near the tub as well as an accent in the new shower.

tub_shelfIf the tub is not where you will want to spend your time the new walk-in shower sure will be! If one showerhead just isn’t enough for you how about a rain showerhead above, a standard showerhead, and a handheld unit?

dual_showerheadThis walk-in tiled shower includes a bench and built-in shelf for toiletries. A rain shower head has also been installed above and can be used with or without the main shower unit. They each run on their own control system.

stoolOpposite the entrance to the walk-in shower is a private area for the stool in the Master Bath. A custom toilet-topper wall cabinet was designed to house toiletries and extra linens in the wide space above the stool.

crown_moldingLike many great things are, a gorgeous space gets that way because of the details. Just like the Adorne® collection gives the wall outlets and switches that added edge, details like crown molding can complete a look. The unique shape of this Master bath allows many locations for crown molding to draw attention to the room’s shape.

faucetOther details like the waterfalling faucet fixtures all help create one cohesive and complete look.
