Geneseo, IL- Historic Home Remodeled and Updated With Nods to History.

When you remodel a home you are writing a part of its history. Every renovation, small or large, becomes an entry into the timeline of that property. Many times our client’s personal style choices drive the selections and design decisions entirely. In a historic home the home itself also influences decisions. When our expert kitchen remodeling team takes on a project in a Historical property, we are so honored to become a part of that history.Historic home deserve expert design and craftsmanship. This historic home in Geneseo, IL has seen many changes to the property over time including kitchen renovations. The most recent remodel we just completed at the home allowed the owners to update the layout, function, and working elements of the kitchen without losing the historic character that the space deserves. Allow us to show you around this beautiful new space…Kitchen remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores in a Historic Geneseo, IL home. True of many older homes, there are doorways and unique wall spaces to consider when laying out the new design. The completed new layout now includes a back wall with the cooking center, refrigerator wall with pantry area, single-level island with sink, and a new hutch area. The contrast from before to after below showcases that a shift in material selection alone can make any space seem brighter and larger.

Before and after from a Historic homes remodel. Kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

The new kitchen seems much larger than the original but no walls were removed. In fact we ADDED many cabinets to this kitchen. Including a new lighting plan and selecting brighter finishes help to make the space seem spacious and timeless. As you can see in the image below, the cabinetry now also extends all the way to the ceiling for a more customized and built-in look.

A flat-panel white kitchen cabinet remains the most classic of choices for all tastes and styles. Here in a historic property it looks right at home. This kitchen includes cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the Prairie Door and Shaker edge profile. The main kitchen cabinets are in the painted “White” finish by Koch. Because of other molding details in the home, a traditional crown molding profile was used where the cabinets meet the ceiling.

A custom wood hood is installed above the range and the addition of a mantle area/shelf allows for decor to be added.Just beyond the main cooking center wall is an area of the kitchen that has been transformed completely. So long alcove with open shelves…. and hello gorgeous new built-in hutch! This little corner of the kitchen may be our favorite part of the new design. A combination of glass doors and open shelves, all illuminated by our Diode LED lighting system.
Before and after from a Historic homes remodel. New hutch area installed as part of kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

This Diode system has been installed throughout the kitchen as undercabinet lighting. The same low-profile, low-voltage lighting is also installed in the glass-door and open shelf cabinets! We realize we sound like a broken record in every feature when we talk about this lighting but trust us it is a key player in why projects like these look so great! Including this lighting is such an important part of showcasing the investments you have made into your home.

Once installed, the lighting becomes the perfect task or ambient light. It uses very little energy and the look is great day or night. For instance, these images were taken during the day and the lighting STILL makes a big difference even with daylight coming in the windows. Another design detail that gives a historic look are the “clerestory” glass cabinet doors. The cabinets surrounding the hood have the top section cut for glass and become a great space for display without distracting from the hood itself.

Of course classic white subway tile is always a great material for any historic home. Another nod to the history of the home is the use of moldings and decorative detail. This kitchen is a very bright and clean look. The look can be achieved and still include details like supports or corbels. Not all of these details are heavy carved or scrolled wooden elements. In this case, a subtle style of mantle bracket was selected that complements the cabinet doorstyle.

A large single-level island is in the center of the kitchen and is now home to the kitchen sink and dishwasher. There is a curved overhang area for seating on the back side. Modern upgrades and updates should always be considered when remodeling. Ask yourself what suits your lifestyle and could make your enjoyment of the space even better? An upgrade as simple as this garbage disposal button may be something your become thankful for daily.

The low-profile of the button helps to keep it from being noticed unless you are really a user at the sink. The apron farmsink has found its way to be included in many styles of kitchen spaces within the past few years. Where it began it’s demand and influence is from projects just like this one. An old-world look inspired by large cast-iron farmsinks. We love the look of this Kohler Whitehaven sink.

The Vicksburg Door with Shaker edge is installed in a Rustic Hickory wood and “Driftwood” finish. This soft gray stain looks great and allows the Hickory grain to be highlighted. The lighting above the kitchen island also helps to keep the kitchen feeling open and bright. Two pendants hang above the island in a polished nickel finish.

These Kichler lights are perfect. The finish of the lights allow light to bounce off of them and the open frame style of the lights allow your eye to look right through them. Polished chrome and nickel finishes blend very well with Stainless elements. Using a brushed light fixture may have suggested a more modern style for the space. Stainless Steel appliances in a white painted kitchen. Sharp microwave drawer and KitchenAid pro gas range. | VillageHomeStores.com

Of course many upgrades were brought in by replacing the appliances with a brand new KitchenAid suite with Sharp microwave drawer. The 36″ wide dual-fuel commercial style range is stunning in appearance and top-notch in features. KitchenAid does a fantastic job of bringing professional-level features and benefits to you at a fraction of the price of other 36″ wide range options. Dual fuel gives you the precise control of a as cooktop with the consistent temperature control of an electric oven below.  Stainless Steel appliances in a white painted kitchen. Microwave drawers can really be the unsung heroes in spaces like this. Could you imagine this same wall of cabinetry with a microwave hood? Even a countertop microwave would distract from the finished look. Microwave drawers give a clean look and a functional upgrade. This 24″ wide flat-panel model blends really well with any Stainless Appliance suite. We managed this remodel from start to finish. Moline, IL- White Painted Kitchen With Red Accents

This kitchen in Moline, IL is classic in the permanent elements and fun and playful in the accents! We love how this customer has accented this finished space with red! Let’s take a look around the newly remodeled space!

White painted cabinetry from our Koch Classic line is arranged in an L-shape layout with a built-in look for the refrigerator across from it. The flat-panel “Prairie” door style is a classic and Transitional choice.  The drawers are a smooth, slab style perfect for the bin-pull hardware. A modern twist on a classic concept is the use of a Stainless Steel farmhouse sink. This single-well model is a sleek looking detail.

The new wall cabinets stretch all the way to the ceiling with a stacked crown molding application. Stacking a crown molding atop a riser or valance allows a very forgiving application for your trim carpenter if the home is older and may have a varied ceiling height. The range wall of cabinetry includes a corner susan cabinet and two angled cabinets to cap off the end. A wide window above the sink provides a lot of great light and plenty of space for two pendant lights.

There are glass door cabinet included in the new kitchen. A white painted finished interior and clear glass inserts provide a great space for displaying items and help to give the kitchen even more of an open look. Don;t forget that our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system can be installed inside of a cabinet too.  Lighting your glass-door cabinets help showcase you displayed items and the overall kitchen perfectly.
Cabinet with glass doors in Moline, IL kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comThis Diode lighting is our best recommendation for any kitchen that has invested in a tiled backsplash. Why tile a surface if you can;t show it off? We love the glass subway tile here with a red accent strip. The main 3″ x 6″ subway tile is by Jeffrey Court in the “Haze” color. The red 1″ x 3″ accent tile is from the “Crystile” series by Glazzio in the “Ruby Red” color.

Cordova, IL- Rustic Transitional Kitchen Remodel

This Cordova, IL kitchen is a sophisticated approach to the Rustic Transitional style. Rustic Beech cabinetry from our Koch line includes knots and other rustic features and a rich “Chestnut” stain dresses up the space. Solid gray quartz countertops and Stainless Steel appliances complete the look…. and that look is breathtakingly gorgeous! hidden_drawer_cabinet (1)

The “Vicksburg” doorstyle selected is a full-overlay style. This means that the doors and drawer fronts span as far across the cabinet face frames as possible leaving little gap between each cabinet. A great example of this seamless full-overlay style is the pantry area that surrounds the new double drawer refrigerator.

Staggered heights and depths were used to add interest to the large L-shaped layout of wall cabinetry. There are many excellent cabinet storage solutions in this kitchen design. The image below showcases the “X” shaped wine cubbies included. Wine storage and display in the perfect location at the end of the kitchen. The cubbies cap off the wall cabinetry and when entertaining, this leg of the design is perfect to set up as the beverage center.

Many of the specialty storage cabinets are hidden from first glance. You don’t need a pull-out cabinet or borrow space in your pantry cabinet for spices, spice racks can be added to your wall cabinetry. Click the thumbnail below to watch this wall cabinet open up to reveal spice racks installed on the interior of each door.

Of course the best way to optimized the corner of your kitchen is to include a lazy susan cabinet. This kitchen has an all wood susan cabinet in an angled front layout. Replacing the L-shaped susan cabinet with space for a full radius of shelf to turn within.  This is an alternative to the traditional susan shelves that form a “Pac Man” shaped shelf. The same angled front door is repeated in the wall cabinetry above.

You also gain added counter space in the corner when using the angled front style of corner cabinet. Ans speaking of counter space, there is plenty with the new dual-height island design. The built-in cooking center is on the interior side facing the kitchen sink. Tall cabinets form the bar-height side of the island. A overhang on the tops stretches in toward the great room and provide seating for 4 guests.

Instead of simply adding a panel that looks like finished cabinet doors, why not make them real doors? At 12″ deep, these full-height door cabinets give a polished look to the back of the island plus add a lot of storage. Extra dishes, bulk items, small appliances, even board games and remotes can all be stored here out of sight but right within reach.

Storage is great but many will also appreciate the construction of these Koch Cabinets. This Cordova, IL kitchen has been ordered from Koch’s Imperial Series of construction. This plywood construction series includes upgraded materials as well as upgraded assembly processes that add to the integrity and longevity of your investment. Koch Imperial Series Cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.comAll of these upgrades plus option to upgrade your drawer box construction and guides as well as your door hinges to a soft-close option. The 1/2″ plywood sides may also be ordered with applied 1/4″ veneered skins for finished ends. Talk with your designer at Village Home Stores about the cabinet construction upgrades that are available for you and your project. This customer upgraded to full-extension, soft-close drawer guides and soft-close hinges on the doors. A clean built-in look was achieved in the island by including a wall oven with cooktop installed above in place of a slide-in or freestanding unit. This can be done with a gas, electric or induction cooktop. The appliance package selected for this remodel is from the Whirlpool line available at Village Home Stores.

Surrounding the built-in oven are two tray divider cabinets. To the left of the new oven and tray divider cabinets is a large stack of drawers. This unit looks like a two drawer cabinet but behind the top drawer is a hidden third drawer perfect for utensils, lids, or potholders. Click the thumbnail below to see this hidden third drawer cabinet.

Houzz is a fantastic way to organize your project inspiration and even communicate with your designer at Village Home Stores. If you are building or remodeling anytime soon you will want to download this app to your tablet and phone. The adjacent front sitting room area of the home was also given a whole new look. Two sections of wall surrounding the fireplace now have built-in cabinetry that matches the style and finish of the kitchen. Wood countertops in the same “Chestnut” stain help give the units a custom look but set them apart from the kitchen while keeping everything coordinated.  Another detail is the addition of textured water glass inserts inside of the cabinet doors. The freedom to display items within without the exposed shelves to gather dust.

This home has been updated and is almost unrecognizable from where it began. Step in from the front door and the new open kitchen and living spaces looks like a brand new home worthy of a magazine cover feature! Kewanee, IL Remodel: Timeless, Transitional, and Right at Home

This home in rural Kewanee, IL was ready for an update. Modern needs in the space-planning of the design paired with a classic look to match the history and style of the farmhouse. Proof that you can update without “time-stamping” your project, take a look at this beautiful new timeless finished space:
Kitchen remodeled in Kewanee, IL by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

White painted Birch cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the flat-panel “Prairie” doorstyle is the perfect selection to achieve a timeless and transitional look that can be styled a number of ways over the years. Selecting classic choices like this as the more permanent elements to your design gives your finished space a longer life and allows you so many more options over time. The painted white flat-panel door remains to be one of the top-selling cabinet choices throughout ALL regions of the U.S. because it looks right at home in so many spaces. This same cabinet could be in a metropolitan loft yet looks just as perfect in this countryside setting.

Most of the change that happened in the remodel process came with updating the room itself. The entrance from the garage into the kitchen and nearby hallway received new doors. A wall dividing the kitchen from the Living Room was removed and a header was built in the location of the original wall. A single wall removed from the equation and an entire flow and function has been given to the space. New painted white base trim was also installed to surround the layout. The kitchen cabinet layout has been carefully selected to make the most of the limited space available. A previously unused wall has been fit with this custom buffet/sideboard area:

What a beautiful statement area to help separate the kitchen from the dining space while keeping the same look and feel of the overall design. This sideboard area is shallow enough to not crowd the kitchen space. The cabinets below are deep enough to accommodate drawers and offer up a great countertop space for serving and entertaining. The center cabinet has been fit with textured glass and lit with our Diode LED lighting system (more on that later).  Staggered depths and heights of this section of wall cabinets also help give it a customized look. The kitchen has been opened up into the front Living Room and now the entire main level of this Kewanee home is open and bright. With no Formal Dining Room in the home, a small kitchen table was tucked in the corner in the original kitchen. With the dividing wall now removed, the table area seems far less crowded and access to the pantry is easier. Take a look at the before and after of the area where the wall was removed:
Before and After kitchen wall removal. | VillageHomeStores.com

As we mentioned earlier, a header had been planned to go in the same location of the wall being removed. During the remodel process the header was installed and prepared for the plasterer to come in as planned to finish off the look. The more the customer looked at that beam in place, the more she liked the look it gave and the dividing quality it gave from the kitchen to the Living Room. She started searching on Pinterest and found an idea to trim out the opening to suit the look of the home. After showing it to the carpenters from Durian Builders, a quick sketch was drawn up to mimic the design of the valance above the kitchen sink. We think the end result looks even better than the pin!
Pinterest Kitchen Ideas. | VillageHomeStores.com

Repeating design elements like this doorway detail and valance help give a finished space that expert touch. We think this is wonderful detail that helps make this remodeled kitchen look like it has been the kitchen that belonged in this home all along! The original space had soffits that dropped down from the ceiling and a track light system to light the kitchen. The new design has wall cabinets and crown molding that stretch up to the ceiling and can lighting has been placed along the perimeter with a ceiling fan in the center (see  image above). The main L-shape of new kitchen cabinets have been fit with storage solutions like a corner lazy susan, tray divider cabinet, and slide-out shelves near the range.
Koch cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.com

See the full album of over 40 photos from this project (including before photos) over here on our Houzz page. There is plenty of added storage space available in the walk-in pantry. This original pantry on the opposite corner of the kitchen has been fit with a custom walk-through pantry front ordered to match the Koch kitchen cabinets. The pantry area now looks like a part of the kitchen. Now because of the location of the pantry in the now open space, it can act as a pantry and broom closet.

Is hallway envy a thing? We sort of think it may be now. Would wouldn’t love We can’t possibly give you an honest tour of the new kitchen without admitting our own favorite part… the Hickory hardwood floors! With these areas combined into one gorgeous space, the home has been styled beautifully by the customer. This cohesive and styled look and open space showcases the hardwood so well.

The home honestly looks magazine ready and the flooring is the main stage this is all set upon. Hallmark Flooring’s “Hacienda Hickory Smoke” hardwood is now in place in the new kitchen, down the hallway, and through the Living Room. We even installed this same hardwood the the entrance from the garage into the home. The rich dark stain gives the perfect contrast to the white doors, trim, and kitchen cabinetry.

A more subtle detail in the finished kitchen is the use of a glass subway tile for the backsplash. The subway tile shape and pattern are a classic choice and the glass material adds a unique texture and tone to the finished look. Shown here iluminated by our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system, the subtle “Buff” color of these Jeffery Court 3″ x 6″ glass tiles stand out perfectly where a solid white tile might have gotten lost in the white kitchen.

Most of the kitchens we featured here on the blog have included this same Diode LED lighting system. We thought we would share with you that this same low-profile series of lighting can be used in so many different applications. In this kitchen we also installed it vertically on the interior of the center glass-door cabinet to light the shelves and glass (see image below). This lighting comes in a variety of styles and can be used indoors and outdoors. Click here to learn more about Diode LED lighting.

The backsplash covers the wall area from cabinet to countertop and what pulls all of the colors together is the Cambria Quartz countertop. The “New Quay” design by Cambria is a palette of soft whites and warm greys. This quartz selection is a neutral choice that will look great for years to come. Plus because Cambria Quartz is one of the most durable surfaces available for residential and foodservice areas, it WILL look great for years to come. Cambria remains to be considered as thought-leaders in the quartz industry and always launch new designs and patterns that are on target with trends.
