Rural Kewanee Kitchen Gets a Refined Rustic New Look

Because of our location and a service radius that spreads over Illinois and Iowa farm country, we do a lot of work for farmers. They are such great customers who appreciate our store’s value of quality work and craftsmanship.  Plus we really really really respect the work that they do. So when a Midwest farmer chooses us to work for them, that is the ultimate compliment to our crews. In this case, the customer asked us to manage a kitchen remodel for them from start to finish… during harvest season! For those are close to any farming households you know that harvest is the busiest, most stress-filled, and demanding seasons of the year. So we felt such an added level of trust from this customer that they were allowing us to get to work for them while they were working so hard on their end. The result? This warm and inviting new space to come home to:

Rustic Beech wood cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Briarwood” stain and applied Black accent glaze looks right at home. The raised-panel Seneca door offers great edge details for that accent glaze to adhere to. Added crown molding, a valance area above the sink, and decorative baseboard trim provided even more edges to be accented. A beautiful tiled backsplash, staggered height and depth cabinets, and a farmsink completes the refined rustic look of the new kitchen.

A kitchen peninsula divides the kitchen from the dining area in the new open concept design. When space allows it, a peninsula can work so well with two heights. This design offers a standard base-height cabinet section on the interior (user) side of the peninsula, and raised bar-height top on the outside. The bar top includes an overhang for casual barstool seating. A barn door look on the back of the peninsula has been applied to compliment the kitchen and the entire great room space.

A Rustic Beech panel and applied trim in an “X” design breaks up the back panel space and adds such great character! Speaking of character, nothing adds rustic charm like a wooden beam. Once the original kitchen was torn out and the entrance widened, it was confirmed that a header would need to be placed above the peninsula area to help support the weight. We wrapped this header with paneling and trim to create the illusion of a large wooden beam. The finished result is perfect for the space!

Two pendant lights from Kichler hang on the inside of the beam. The pendants blend a matte black and brushed gold finish for the design. Cabinet handle hardware for this kitchen is from the Bremen series by Jeffery Alexander.  Cabinet hardware can be an important selection for the daily use of your kitchen. Be sure you select designs that looks great but also function well for you. Test out the handles to make sure your hand can comfortably fit to operate them.

On the interior of the Peninsula is a long work surface with plenty of outlets and storage solutions in the cabinetry. We installed a pullout trash cabinet on the end of the peninsula. This keeps the trash located centrally for users inside and outside of the kitchen. Near the inside corner is a specialty cabinet many will envy: a Tupperware organizer! This pullout unit includes a lower section for the containers and a top slotted section for lids. No more opening a cabinet door and bracing yourself for an avalanche!

Another fantastic storage upgrade is located near the cooking center of the new kitchen. A pullout cabinet opens to reveal utensil bins and knife storage. There is even a lower shelf that can also be used for large utensils or kitchen gadgets. This is just one of many storage options available in a pullout cabinet. Even small cabinet spaces can pack great storage solutions! Ask your designer at Village Home Stores about your options.

Of course an appliance garage is one of the original cabinet storage solutions ever added to kitchen cabinet lines. This kitchen includes a garage in an upgraded new style. Instead of an accordion or louvered door, this corner appliance garage has a matching cabinet door. Top-lift hardware is installed to let the door open out and up for a more spacious look and feel.

We made sure the new kitchen had plenty of outlets throughout. These stylish square outlets are from the adorne series by legrand. So many options for switches and outlets plus so many colors for plates to select from. We also love that the plates snap in place (no visible screws) for a smooth, clean look.

The countertops in this kitchen are a natural stone named “White Sand”. There is so much character in the slabs and the granite looks perfect in this completed design. That same legrand outlet company makes an undercabinet lighting system that is versatile and stylish. This system allows you customize locations for lighting, added outlets, speakers, devices, and more. One of the added benefits for this undercabinet system is it frees up the entire backsplash area for a tile design. No outlets to disrupt the layout of tile.

We also installed this system across the room on the refrigerator wall. A dropzone/landing space for the kitchen is home to the phone dock and where mail and piles are welcome to collect. A bluetooth speaker and phone charging station is in place here. On this wall we gave a counter-depth refrigerator a real built-in look with a panel on the left side and a tall pantry cabinet on the right. This section of cabinetry stretches all the way to the ceiling with a crown riser and stacked molding.

Pay attention to the handles on the tall pantry cabinet above. Notice that they are the same style as the kitchen but a larger scale. This choice helps to better pair the door size with an appropriate handle and also to give a more solid open and close to the doors as they operate. What kind of details and cabinet upgrades would you pick for your own dream kitchen? Many of these cabinet inserts and add-ons are far more affordable than you would expect! The Holiday season gets the Village Home Stores team so excited. We are able to look back at all of the new spaces we have helped complete this year that will be enjoyed for their first Holiday this year. It brought us so much joy to visit this Kewanee home for a final walk-through and see it all decked out for the Christmas Season. Can we also just take a moment to enjoy how great this barn door looks in the dining room? The homeowner installed and stained the door to match the new kitchen themselves!

Moline, IL Kitchen Remodel Finds Room For Style and a Small Island

This Moline, IL home was ready for a new kitchen look and layout. There were no major changes as far as moving appliances or even removing soffits. Rich new finishes were selected, storage was added, and room for a small kitchen island was found. Koch cabinetry in the flat-panel Savannah door and Birch wood stained Chestnut is a perfect compliment to the existing woodwork in the home.  Moline Illinois kitchen with Nevasca Mist granite, Koch Cabinetry, luxury vinyl floors, and mosaic tile. Remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

The main wall of cabinetry is found on the sink wall of the kitchen. A range is centered on a nearby wall with landing space on each side.  With plenty of walkway space surrounding it, a kitchen island is an important part of the new design! Prepping for a meal and coming home with a load of groceries just got a lot easier for this household. This two-cabinet island is a very functional part of the new layout. Perfectly located for prep, back door entry, and even space for seating! The added storage and work surface this island brings to the new kitchen is so important. The island top is also the best place to see the stunning granite selected for the kitchen. Moline Illinois kitchen with Nevasca Mist granite and Koch Cabinetry remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

One of the exciting parts of choosing granite for your remodel project in the Quad Cities is that we have a local source for you to select your material from! This can be a very interesting way to make a personal connection with your design. Epic Stone is located in Davenport, Iowa and there you can walk the aisles of slabs and help decide what you are drawn to. Your designer at Village can then partner with our fabricators to make sure the stone you hand-select makes the journey from Epic, to the fabrication shop, and then finally into your home. Learn more about Epic Stone here in a past blog post. This Moline, IL customer selected a stone named “Nevasca Mist” and it is a beautiful blend of warm grays and beiges.

So much great storage and functionality added to the kitchen with this small island. We also love the flooring selected for the new space. These may appear to be 12″ x 24″ ceramic tiles but no grout lines! That is because they are actually luxury vinyl tiles. Our Tarkett Premiere line can be installed with or without grout. This kitchen showcases a neutral color named “Onyx Travertine Silver” and the look is great. Moline Illinois kitchen with Koch cabinetry in Birch wood and Chestnut finish remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.comThe appliances were updated recently in this kitchen but we did make an adjustment to the microwave hood area of the layout. A smooth panel was installed above the microwave area to match the look of the drawerboxes in the kitchen. We added to the soffit depth on this side of the kitchen to allow the small crown molding to be installed and now the wall cabinet section has a full, customized surround look.

Across the kitchen was an area put to better use in the new design. The new kitchen island now can be a landing zone for back door entry. Instead of a base and wall cabinet combination, a tall pantry cabinet now offers so much storage space and a customized look to the stand-alone section of the kitchen. Moline Illinois kitchen tall pantry cabinet in a Birch wood and Chestnut finish remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

If you peek at the before and after image below, you will notice there wasn’t exactly a lot of backsplash space in the “before” kitchen. Tall wall cabinets were installed beneath existing soffits leaving only half of the expected space you would want for that area. If you look at the “after” side of the image, you will see a more comfortable suggested space of 18″.

It truly lets the tile choice in the new kitchen to be showcased. The tile and granite selections together are just perfect! The mosaic tile seems to have been made just for this pairing! Glazzio’s Closseum Series in the Caesar Beige color looks incredible! The granite and tile are splendidly showcased by our bestselling Diode LED lighting system.Moline kitchen with Nevasca Mist granite and Glazzio Colosseum series tile. Kitchen remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

This Diode LED lighting system is such a wise investment and every customer that has it installed is so happy with it. It is low-voltage, and low-profile leaving you with so many options for installation. Of course undercabinet lighting is our most popular use. Because of their low power use, these lights are perfect if you like to keep a night-light on on the evening or like to have lights on waiting for you when you arrive home. The Diode lights can also be dimmable shown below on one of our legrand radiant collection paddle switch sets:Moline Illinois kitchen with legrand Radiant paddle switches and outlets. Old homes are just so much fun to remodel because you honestly never know what unique feature you will stumble upon! In this Moline home there was a laundry chute located on the left wall of the kitchen sink area.  While the homeowner wasn’t planning on using it for laundry, he did find a fun use. Voila! a recycling chute! He keeps a plastic bin down below to collect cans and sends them down when he is finished. We think Alice in Wonderland would find it a “curiously” custom solution and definitely a conversation starter. Moline Illinois kitchen with small custom door, Koch cabinetry in Birch wood and Chestnut finish remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | villagehomestores.com

Kitchen Reaching New Heights in Coal Valley, IL

We don’t just help create beautiful remodeled spaces at Village Home Stores. We can also provide you with expert design and material selection for your new home. This new home built by Hazelwood Homes includes a stunning new kitchen from Village Home Stores. Granite countertops, dark cabinetry, and Stainless Steel appliances are all showcased in this beautiful new Coal Valley, IL home.
Kitchen with Ganache granite counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

This kitchen features Koch cabinetry in the “Seneca” doorstyle in Beech wood with a rich “Mocha” stain applied. A angled peninsula area includes a dual-height design and a wood paneled back to match the kitchen. The range wall in this kitchen grabs your attention right away. Staggered heights and depths of the wall cabinetry add interest to the design. Keep your staggered cabinets symmetrical in location when possible. This wall cabinet layout showcases a great use of “rhythm” in design with the staggered look. Up-down-up-down-up, all in balanced widths.
Maytag range and microwave hood. | VillageHomeStores.com

Staggering the corner cabinets as well as the center microwave area is a great look. Microwave Hoods sometimes get a bad reputation for style but this design totally redeems the look! If you are going to frame in and showcase a microwave, this model is the right one to choose. It is stylish and full of features. Have a tight space you are trying to fit a microhood into? This might be the perfect model for your design. This Maytag unit is designed to open even if your microwave is adjacent to a returning wall.  Take a look at the image below to illustrate what we mean:
microwave_doors_against_wallA 90° Hinge allows for flexible microwave hood combination installation next to a wall if needed. In this case, the fluted columns and light-rail molding surrounding the microwave don’t get hit by the swinging door. The wall cabinet in the corner of the kitchen is also staggered and balances the final wall cabinet before the peninsula starts. Taller and deeper with an added open shelf area for displaying items, this angled cabinet area caps off the wall cabinet design stylishly.
staggered_height_cabinet

The rich, Mocha stained cabinetry is paired with natural stone counters that are a granite named “Ganache”. A natural beauty, this stone blends chocolaty browns and creamy whites and honestly, makes us want a bowl of ice cream right now just writing about it. Also reaching for new heights in this Coal Valley kitchen, the set-on granite backplash is much taller than a standard application.

ganache_granite

A standard set-on splash in a kitchen setting is typically somewhere between 4-5″ in height.  The end result makes a big visual impact and helps keep the taller height wall cabinets seem in scale with the project. Shown below, this taller backsplash height blends seamlessly with the space between the sink counter and the bar-height counter on the angled peninsula.
interior

There is also a great wall of cabinet storage surrounding the refrigerator in this kitchen design. Press play below to see the tall pantry cabinet come to life and reveal five slide-out shelves inside. Between the new pantry and the refrigerator area is a wide landing space of countertop for loading and unloading items in the fresh food and pantry storage zone of the design.

Geneseo, IL- 5 Design Upgrades For Your Kitchen

This beautiful Geneseo, IL remodel has a lot to offer in terms of style and impact. As we take a look around we want to share with you 5 great design upgrades included in this tour that helped take this finished space to the next level. Perhaps one of these details might be right for your own kitchen remodel project.
Kitchen before and after. | VillageHomeStores.com

White painted cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line is paired with “Silver Cloud” granite tops. The cabinetry is from Dura Supreme’s  Bria series of construction. This is a full-access or a “frameless” series of cabinetry. The painted white cabinetry is such a bright and updated change from the original Oak kitchen. The ceramic tile from the original kitchen was able to stay in place because the new kitchen design worked with it.

#1: A Full-Height Backsplash

The first design detail that truly makes a big impact in this kitchen is the installation of a full-height backsplash instead of a tiled space. With a character stone like this “Silver Cloud” granite, a full-height splash gives the opportunity to really showcase the natural veining in the slab. Shifting the beautiful pattern up to a visible, vertical plane also gives a really high-end look.
mirrored_cabinet

#2: Mirrored Cabinets

The second design detail that you can include in your space is the use of mirror in place of textured glass in the upper cabinetry. This may even be an upgrade you can make in your existing cabinetry. At first glance, you may have thought these cabinets had glass in them. Take a closer look and you see reflections of the scenic views outside of the new kitchen. Including mirror in kitchens and bathrooms was an up-and-coming trend in 2015 and has been predicted to be a big trend in 2016 and beyond. The look is great but think about how clever this concept is. Nothing is visible behind the mirror! That frees up “display” type cabinets to be used for any and all categories of storage. China hutches, Master Bath linen cabinets, the list goes on of great locations that can benefit by including mirror inserts.

#3: Designate a Drop Zone

The original kitchen footprint has been extended slightly into the casual dining area. A double wall oven from KitchenAid® has been installed for ease of use on the customer’s back. Now loading and unloading items is easy and the tall cabinet includes storage above and below the wall ovens. The double ovens are also perfect for preparing large meals during Holidays and special events. The end of this tall section of cabinetry is capped off with a tall angled end cabinet pantry. With shelving and outlets within this cabinet it is now the perfect space for a drop zone cabinet. Hidden out of sight is a charging station, calendars, mail and all kinds of items that would normally clutter up a countertop.
granite_splash

#4: Upgrade A Busy Appliance

If you don’t drink coffee, why buy a french press? If you don’t bake or use your oven often, maybe pass on convection features. Our point is that you should choose areas of your kitchen to upgrade that you can continue to thank yourself for over and over. A great example is upgrading your cooktop to induction if you cook often and want the best results. This may look like a standard electric cooktop but it is actually an Induction cooktop from KitchenAid®. Induction works using electromagnetic technology. It heats the cooking vessel instead of the surface. This allows you the immediate temperature control of a gas cooktop but in a smooth electric look. The Performance Boost feature allows you to exceed the maximum heat-level setting for up to 10 minutes, perfect for rapid boiling.
induction

#5 Upgrade Access

The Dura Supreme’s Bria series a frameless construction is inspired by European Cabinetry. This allows you full access to the cabinet box. No matter what cabinet line or construction your design includes, you always have the option to place drawered cabinets where doors and slideouts can also be located. Even though the footprint of this island remained the same that upgrade was made with the new island cabinetry.before after island

Now it is easy to access pots and pans and all kinds of added items within the drawers. Cabinet hardware was carefully selected to match the scale of the drawers the handles were placed on. The back of the kitchen island was also upgraded from smooth panels to custom wainscot panels. This upgrade makes a world of a difference in the finished look especially in a great room setting where the island back is highly visible.
island_back

This new space is now bright, stylish, and makes a big impact because of the upgrades included. The full-height granite backsplash is breathtaking and including mirrors in the upper cabinets is a gorgeous look. Extending the cabinetry to include wall ovens and a pantry/drop zone allowed an easier oven experience and the new cooking zone has an incredible Induction cooktop. Specialty cabinet inserts were also included and an appliance garage in the kitchen corner keeps the counter from small appliance clutter. There is so much to love about this space.

We included a full video tour of this finished space in a recent episode of the Village Home Show. In that tour, we give a detailed look at induction features and benefits. Press play below to watch it.

Partial Remodel- How To “Pull Off” Mixing Metals

Three wood finishes, two granite colors, AND four metal finishes? Yes that is correct! Take a look at how amazing everything looks together! Proof that with the right guidance and vision, you can pull off mixing materials like this. The perimeter oak cabinetry is actually original to the kitchen. A peninsula was removed and now a large painted island sits in the center of the kitchen.
A blend of finishes in a Prophetstown, IL kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A brand new appliance package was purchased from Village Home Stores including A counter-depth refrigerator and dishwasher in KitchenAid’s first-in-the-industry Black Stainless Steel. This uniquely tinted Stainless Steel is sophisticated, stylish, and striking in person. The true Stainless Steel finish wipes clean in seconds and the tinted color even helps reduce the appearance of fingerprints on the panels.

The new kitchen island top is a granite named “Desert Dream” and on perimeter of the kitchen “Astoria” granite has been installed. Both of these natural stones are in a “brushed” finish. Instead of the expected high-polished look granite normally has, the brushed finish gives a unique and warm texture while enhancing the look and feel of the stone. Two stones and two appliance finishes. The refrigerator and range wall is the best example of showcasing the two finishes side-by-side that work perfectly together in the finished look.
Mixing appliance finishes in the kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A Stainless Steel 30″ wide, front-control slide-in electric range is just inches from the Black Stainless refrigerator. The new distressed painted wood hood above the range and accent tile ties everything together, the look is perfect. A Stainless Steel microwave drawer in the new kitchen island is right across from a Black Stainless dishwasher. That is not all for metal finishes in the new space. Oil-Rubbed Bronze faucets have been paired with Hammered Copper undermount sinks.

The Hammered Copper is not only a great color to add to the mix, the texture is incredible. With views of the countryside out every window, this Hammered Copper adds a rustic touch to the space while the shape and setting keep it formal. The use of a deep farmhouse apron-front model sink is the right choice for this Rustic Traditional look and offers even more of that Hammered surface to show.

An updated look to an existing Oak kitchen. The finishes aren’t the only upgrades included. The appliances selected for this project represent some of the best features available in appliances today. The slide-in range includes convection and steam features in the oven and 5 elements including a warming zone. An internal water dispenser, versatile shelving, plus a three-tiered freezer drawer make this one of the most spacious counter-depth refrigerators you will ever use. This 24″ wide microwave drawer by Sharp has been redesigned to pair more seamlessly with all of our brands. With a tilt-out control panel, there are no handles to match up. Perfect for including in islands or even built-in to a custom bar area, this microwave is one of our top-selling models for both remodels and new homes. View our full catalog of appliances here on the website and contact anyone from our expert appliance sales team with any questions you have on these products.

Oak crown molding and refrigerator panels were ordered to adapt the existing kitchen to the new design. The new black-painted cabinetry is from our DuraSupreme line and showcases their Heritage paint series. A wood hood above the new range and a large kitchen island are each finished in the “B” color from this series. An “X” back panel design is paired with a beadboard end panel treatment. There is now space for four barstools plus plenty of space for a large dining table area right next to the island.

DuraSupreme’s Heritage paint finishes come in a wide range of color options. From a bright antique white to this black painted look there are so many possibilities. Heritage painted finishes all include distressed features like chipped corners, worn edges, and even “bird-pecking” which are perfect old-world characteristics for the furniture-look island and wood hood installed.

This new kitchen sits on the perfect platform to showcase the complete look. Beautiful new Hickory hardwood floors have been installed throughout the entire great room all the way to the front entrance of the home. This warm Hickory “Tackroom” finished hardwood is from the Chaparal Collection. “Annie” (see below) just loves laying in the sunlight on her new Hallmark floors.

Annie is now pretty much internet-famous thanks to this feature Hallmark Flooring wrote up on her (new floors). All of these finishes together in one space and does it work? ABSOLUTELY! Having a designer on hand to help you select and place your selections keeps your project vision on track and well executed. Your designer at Village Home Stores will have a firm grasp on the overall vision for the finished look and that is a valuable asset.

A new tile backsplash ties all of these selections together perfectly. Matte finish subway tile in a color called “Elemental Tan” plus a Glazzio accent tile from their “Corrugated Scapes” series in the “Ginger Clove” color. A bold band of accent tile spans the entire L-shape and a square field installed above the range completes the look.

This partial kitchen remodel was not all we completed at this home. New flooring was installed in many rooms and two bathrooms were completely made over. See the full album of over 70 photos from these projects here on our houzz page. We also are happy to announce that this kitchen and both bathrooms has been included in an episode of the Village Home Show. You can watch it entirely by pressing play in the video below:
