Take a look and see what we mean:

Nothing about this finished space waves a flag with a year or a single trend on it. There is nothing more universally classic than a clean, white painted kitchen. With tastes and trends varying all across the country a white painted kitchen remains something we can all agree on. This Geneseo, IL family takes the look to the next level by selecting added details you will love.
White inset doors and subway tile for a classic modern farmhouse look. Expert design and material selection for your new home. | VillageHomeStores.com

Painted white cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line in the “Arcadia” door and inset construction is paired with a classic white 3″ x 6″ subway tile backsplash. The tile is from our Rittenhouse line and the “Arctic White” color is in a soft matte finish. The hardwood flooring in this great room space is gorgeous. Casa Bella’s “Baroque Oak” series in the “Marche” finish has such a depth of colors and the look is beautiful. Two countertop materials have been included in this kitchen design. The main perimeter of the kitchen has Cambria Quartz counters in the Torquay design. The polished quartz tops are a great contrast to the matte finish wall tiles. A Stainless Steel appliance suite from our KitchenAid® line looks right at home in the space. This 36″ KitchenAid® Dual Fuel 6-burner range is a hard-working investment for this kitchen.

With 5.1 cu. ft. total capacity and EasyConvect™ Conversion features, this range is commercial in style but easy to use. The immediate control of a gas cooktop and the consistent and efficient use of convection cooking. This range is enviable to any serious home chef but not intimidating to frozen pizza connoisseurs. Two pendants from the Feiss “Harrow” series hang above the large kitchen island. The Oil Rubbed Bronze finish is a great compliment to the dark granite top below and seeded glass gives a New Traditional look to a classic style.

The main focal point of this kitchen is the island itself. In a close second for your attention is the range and hood wall of cabinetry. A wood hood has been ordered from Dura Supreme to match the surrounding cabinetry. A beautiful mantle shelf has been applied for a classic detail and location for seasonal decor, leaning artwork, or left clear as shown.

A bold eye-catching contrast to the white kitchen is found in the large island counter. A “Black Pearl” granite top is large in size and includes an undermounted farm sink. This dark top is a bold statement but take note of another material selection detail in the granite’s finish… it isn’t polished! In place of a dark, high-gloss polished granite top the “brushed” finish has been selected. This allows the natural stone to give the look of a soapstone or slate style and texture. The installed look is softer and less formal in appearance. A slight arc has been included on the overhang of the island. This end is now ready to accommodate counter-height stools for seating in the new kitchen.

A detail that may go unnoticed at first glance is the style of cabinetry in this kitchen. The doors themselves are a very transitional flat-panel construction.  The detail we are speaking of is how they are not resting atop of the cabinet face frame. Instead these cabinets have been ordered in an “inset” construction. This look has been around as long as cabinet furniture-making has been. Many old homes include built-in cabinets with this same inset door concept. The next time you are near an antique piece of furniture there is a very high chance that you will find the doors are also inset. The cabinet and door all sits flush with the frame of the cabinet and this design choice takes a basic white kitchen and transforms it into an instant classic! Inset cabinetry can be ordered with a hidden hinge (like shown here) or an exposed barrel hinge. Click here to see a past kitchen feature on the blog that showcases the exposed hinge look on an inset door.

Did you know that according to a recent Houzz survey on 2017 trends in the industry we spend nearly 3 hours a day on average in our kitchens? Yes we are socializing and entertaining but we are also many times reading, working from home, or even just watching TV. In a kitchen this stunning it would be a shame to clutter up the countertops with a TV. That is why a space was designated for a small television right above the refrigerator. With this kitchen already including inset doors, adding pocket door hardware that allows the doors to roll into the cabinet box makes the screen visible from anywhere in the kitchen without a door to block the view.

This kitchen features Koch cabinetry in the “Seneca” doorstyle in Beech wood with a rich “Mocha” stain applied. A angled peninsula area includes a dual-height design and a wood paneled back to match the kitchen. The range wall in this kitchen grabs your attention right away. Staggered heights and depths of the wall cabinetry add interest to the design. Keep your staggered cabinets symmetrical in location when possible. This wall cabinet layout showcases a great use of “rhythm” in design with the staggered look. Up-down-up-down-up, all in balanced widths.

Staggering the corner cabinets as well as the center microwave area is a great look. Microwave Hoods sometimes get a bad reputation for style but this design totally redeems the look! If you are going to frame in and showcase a microwave, this model is the right one to choose. It is stylish and full of features. Have a tight space you are trying to fit a microhood into? This might be the perfect model for your design. This Maytag unit is designed to open even if your microwave is adjacent to a returning wall.  Take a look at the image below to illustrate what we mean:
microwave_doors_against_wallA 90° Hinge allows for flexible microwave hood combination installation next to a wall if needed. In this case, the fluted columns and light-rail molding surrounding the microwave don’t get hit by the swinging door. The wall cabinet in the corner of the kitchen is also staggered and balances the final wall cabinet before the peninsula starts. Taller and deeper with an added open shelf area for displaying items, this angled cabinet area caps off the wall cabinet design stylishly.

The rich, Mocha stained cabinetry is paired with natural stone counters that are a granite named “Ganache”. A natural beauty, this stone blends chocolaty browns and creamy whites and honestly, makes us want a bowl of ice cream right now just writing about it. Also reaching for new heights in this Coal Valley kitchen, the set-on granite backplash is much taller than a standard application.

ganache_granite

A standard set-on splash in a kitchen setting is typically somewhere between 4-5″ in height.  The end result makes a big visual impact and helps keep the taller height wall cabinets seem in scale with the project. Shown below, this taller backsplash height blends seamlessly with the space between the sink counter and the bar-height counter on the angled peninsula.

There is also a great wall of cabinet storage surrounding the refrigerator in this kitchen design. Press play below to see the tall pantry cabinet come to life and reveal five slide-out shelves inside. Between the new pantry and the refrigerator area is a wide landing space of countertop for loading and unloading items in the fresh food and pantry storage zone of the design.

tiled_bathroomThe variety of tones and textures in the tiled shower make for an interesting look and the Oil-Rubbed Bronze shower entry is a bold contrast to the bright tile work within. The plumbing fixtures for this Master Bath are also in the ORB finish. This high contrast helps to create a dramatic look in the space. In place of the expected 12″ x 12″ wall tile, a 10″ x 14″ wall tile is used. This modern size of a traditional style adds interest and a current look to the beige space. an accent tile with a warm glass tile and basket weave pattern is banded around the tiled shower space.

A corner bench has been installed in the tiled shower as well as a tiled in niche area for shower toiletries. Discuss these options with your designer and tile salesperson in the early stages of your selections. That way you have plenty of time to decide on location and accent tile designs.corner_bench

Hazelwood Homes Teaches a New Home Old Tricks

This home built by Hazelwood Homes is located in Geneseo, IL and though it’s brand new, it is an instant classic! By selecting the right materials and design elements these homeowners and the team at Village Home Stores worked alongside Hazelwood to create a timeless look with plenty of modern conveniencesnew_construction_quad_cities

Inset Cabinetry:

Using inset cabinetry in place of a traditional overlay of cabinet doors may seem like a small detail but it really is what takes this kitchen to the next level. While there is an upcharge to this construction of cabinet, it can be the key element to creating this entire look. Many of the white painted kitchens you see on the covers of the magazines that greet you at the grocery checkout are inset styles.inset_doors_quad_cities

Material Choices:

The right materials can make or break a kitchen design. Another portion of the investment made by these homeowners is the use of soapstone for the countertops. Many materials were discussed and considered but in the end the best way to get the soapstone look desired was to install true soapstone in the kitchen.

kitchen ideasThe perimeter cabinets in this kitchen are from our custom Crestwood Cabinetry line in the “Alexandria” inset door style with exposed wrought iron hinges. They are a Maple wood painted with a color called “Icing” white. The countertops were natural soapstone as we mentioned above and the appliances were a package of stainless steel models from KitchenAid. The large center island is installed in a Rustic Cherry wood finished with the “Bistro” stain.

A Farm Sink:
new_construction_geneseo

An apron front sink or “farm sink” has been undermounted to the new soapstone counters and matches the classic style. Modern conveniences like a touch-controlled faucet and stainless dishwasher surrounding this sink don’t look out of place but instead they are integrated into the entire design and look right at home.

Conceal the Pantry Space:cabinets_quad_cities

A walk-in pantry front has been installed just down from the kitchen sink en route to the bench area we have previously blogged about. In many remodel designs with similar materials we have a huge design challenge with the limited space in the existing home to work with. With this kitchen being designed within a new home we had the luxury of needed space to allow access to this large pantry area.  With a larger footprint for the kitchen design there was also plenty of space to allow for multiple users to prep and cook in. Two ovens and a microwave have all been included in the design and the large island itself can become a large workspace accessed from many sides.

Stack the Molding:layered crown

In classic inset kitchens you typically will see a handful of elements included in the design to help create this timeless look. Bringing the cabinets all the way up to the ceiling of the room adds storage but it is very important to the look as well. In  this case, the cabinet height was pulled down by about 6″ allowing space for a stacked crown molding to be applied.

cabinets_to_ceilingThis home is so beautiful and we are delighted that the owners invited us in to show it to you. Sometimes a single image in a magazine or a “pin” you see online can really strike a chord with your own personal style. Mudroom Managed: Hazelwood Homes

Hzaelwood Homes IncWe will be sharing the kitchen from this Hazelwood Homes Inc. home built in Geneseo, IL next week. We wanted to start by featuring one of the more unique spaces in this home. The back door bench area that serves as a drop zone at this home is so great that we had to feature it first.

drop zone areamudroom lockerAny busy household can appreciate this drop zone near the garage entry of this home. “A place for everything and everything in its place” comes to mind right away. With a single base cabinet, a full row of wall cabinet storage including mail slots and a long row of coat hooks outfit this area for maximum storage.

This area is located in the hallway just off the kitchen and also allows access to the powder room nearby. The reclaimed wood bench allows a location for shoes to tuck away and mounting double hooks instead of a single style allows each family member to hang a jacket and accessories in the same area.

kitchen_renderingKoch cabinetry Oyster FinishThe door style selected for this space was a beaded style from our Koch Classic line. The beaded style of door is a perfect compliment to the inset painted cabinets in the kitchen (within eyesight of this area). The Birch cabinets have been painted with the “Oyster” finish which is a light almost “dove” grey color that will be more forgiving over time for soil and messes than a bright white would. A single piece of matching Soapstone was used as the countertop in this drop zone to carry over the same style from the kitchen as well.

Do you have an area that gets cluttered up with backpacks, shoes, and all kinds of piles? Chances are there is a smarter way to use that space! The design team at Village Home Stores can help you figure out the best way to use your space and make the entire are much more appealing to see as well.
