2018 Q.C.B.R. Home Show Recap

Well we have officially finished unpacking everything and almost have our showroom back together again after another fun and successful Q.C.B.R. Home Show at the Rock Island Q.C.C.A. Expo Center. From Thursday evening through late Sunday afternoon, we greeted hundreds of guests in our booth space.

In years past we have installed entire kitchen displays the week leading up to the big show. This year we chose to install a large, eye-catching kitchen island and allow plenty of space to meet and greet visitors to chat about their own projects. The island this year made a BIG impact! We took a few risks and your response was so great. Blue cabinetry, wood details, golden accents, and purple?! Painted blue cabinetry with Acacia wood detail and Cambria Annicca quartz in the 2018 QCBR Home Show booth by Village Home Stores. | Village Home Stores

At the very center of our booth was a giant island constructed of cabinetry and panels in our new Charcoal Blue painted finish. The island was accented with sections of Acacia hardwood. We have already installed many projects throughout the Quad Cities region in this new blue cabinet color and the look is great. We also wanted an opportunity to showcase the “X” style of glass door mullions that is available. Painted blue cabinetry with doors cut for glass but instead backed with Acacia wood planks. | Village Home Stores

Mirror and glass just didn’t stand out enough against the “X” detail so we thought a bit out of the box. The same Acacia wood from our back paneling was used as an “insert” attached to the inside of the doors. This contrast in color and pattern made for a bold but amazing look that could be seen from all the way down the Home Show aisle. An open bookshelf cabinet is found on the opposite side and more Acacia hardwood is installed in combination with the Charcoal Blue paneling and trim.

With an island that large, we need a great looking countertop. We wanted the impact to be striking but not completely over the top. We selected a new quartz design by Cambria® curious to see what your response would be. This marbled look includes details of gold and purple iridescent stone.

Wait, what? Did we say purple?! YOU BET WE DID! This stunning new Anniccadesign from Cambria® Quartz is part of their Marble Collection™ and when viewed from afar, the striking veining of shimmering flecks is beautiful. Take a closer look and the top reveals flecks of gold and a regal purple. It was pretty fun to watch our guests say how much they loved the top and then notice the purple seconds later. Get ready to see more purple as Ultra Violet has been named Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2018. Cambria Annicca quartz in the 2018 QCBR Home Show booth by Village Home Stores. | Village Home Stores

Another popular product in the booth was something we have never brought to showcase at the show, our custom window blinds and shades. This year we brought an example of our Transitions Shades for our visitors to try out and see. Press play below to see these unique blinds in action (and see Seth peek around the corner to say hello).

We have examples of this style of shade in our showroom in downtown Geneseo, IL. The look is truly unique. Of course we brought with us this year some examples of the many options for lighting available at Village Home Stores. It is already impossible to showcase all of the hundreds of thousands of fixtures in our showroom, so to select just a handful to bring for our booth is always challenging. We think our lighting team picked the perfect fixtures this year because our guests loved them!Lighting in the 2018 Quad Cities Home Show booth by Village Home Stores. | Village Home Stores

The largest and most noticeable was the geometric cluster fixture (shown center above) from our Hinkley line. This display of lighting was our more Modern grouping. It showcased the trend of gold and also mixed materials. On the opposite side of the booth we went with a more Farmhouse Rustic grouping of fixtures. The award for most reached at and touched light fixture certainly would go to this chained light (shown center below) by Sea Gull. Lighting in the 2018 QCBR Home Show booth by Village Home Stores. | Village Home Stores

This year there were just as many bath remodel customers we spoke to as kitchen customers. The last few years have been trending this direction for our remodel business. This year we brought a bath vanity display and our Kohler®  Choreographshower system to showcase. This collection of shower walls and adjustable accessory options is fantastic. Stylish options for an easy-to-clean shower look plus the ability to customize the space even after it is installed. Ask a member of our design team with any questions about this great system. Our booth was busy this year and we hope f you were at the show that you were able to get your questions answered. If not you can always reach out  It was so great to meet potential new clients and of course we love it when past clients stop by to say hello too! Your response and feedback for our TV Show has also been such an encouragement. We hope to get four new episodes of the show coming your way in 2018.

We were honored a few weeks ago by being named the Q.C.B.R. Business of the Year for 2017. We value the opinions our customers have for our staff and our store very highly. To also be recognized among peers and colleagues is truly and honor.

Hazelwood Homes- Kitchen With Rich Birch Wood and Shimmering Cambria Quartz

We have the opportunity to design so many unique kitchen spaces throughout the Quad Cities Region. Each and every design is unique from the next and the materials selected are just as unique and each client and home. It seems like we have shared a LOT of painted white kitchens lately on the blog but rest assured that isn’t all that we do! This Geneseo, IL kitchen from Hazelwood Homes is a wonderful example:

There is truly nothing more inviting than a warm and cozy woodgrain kitchen. Rich, wood cabinetry is paired with warm lighting and materials throughout. The look is tailored and high-end but the design and setting is so inviting. Koch Classic Cabinetry in the Westbrook doorstyle and Birch “Mocha” stain has been accented with “Black” highlights. The cabinets stretch all the way to the ceiling and the height of the wall cabinets allow for a double panel door design (see below).

Beautiful and classic subway tile is installed as the kitchen backsplash throughout and even extends to surround the kitchen window and above. One of our unique Transitions blinds is installed in the window. An arched valance detail above the kitchen sink is repeated in the custom wood hood above the cooktop.

A matching wood hood can be ordered to be placed within your kitchen design from Village Home Stores. The same raised center panels from the doors are used as a detail in hood and sink valances. A hood blower/insert can be concealed within these wood hood cabinets. These inserts can be ordered in a number of configurations and powers. That way you can customize the look AND function of your ventilation to fit your needs.

A 36″ wide 5-burner gas cooktop from KitchenAid® offers a versitile cooktop layout including a range from a high heat of 20K BTUs to a simmer of just 6k BTUs. Full width cast iron grates make it easy to slide from burner to burner. The CookShield finish helps to protect the cooktop from high-temperature cooking stains.

But what about small appliances? How does this kitchen not seem so cluttered? The coffeepot and toaster are hidden behind the door of a corner appliance garage cabinet. This new style of hinged door appliance garage is a welcome update from the accordion door styles of the past. Another wonderful storage solution hidden from sight is this hidden walk-in pantry:

We can order walk-through pantry door fronts to match your kitchen as well! These double doors open to reveal a huge walk-in pantry behind the wall oven area. Press play below to see the tall door open to reveal the pantry entrance.

A double wall oven by KitchenAid® is paired with an over-the-counter microwave model from Sharp®. Over-the-counter microwaves allow for you to keep a decorative hood element to your design but eliminate the need to set a microwave oven on the countertop. This model from Sharp blends well with our other appliance brands for a seamless package look.

The innovative new 5-door refrigerator models by KitchenAid® are stylish and packed with amazing features. The KitchenAid® brand was the first in the industry to introduce a 5-door model. The two small drawers in the center of the unit are refrigeration. The left drawer includes 5 preset temperatures: meat/fish, drinks, greens/herbs, deli/cheese, and even a thaw/marinate setting. The right drawer is ideal for produce storage with a built-in produce preserving featureKitchenAid 5 door french door refrigerator in Stainless Steel. | VillageHomeStores.com

This kitchen is a two-toned design that includes a contrasting finish on the batwing-shaped kitchen island. The same Koch Westbrook doorstyle from the kitchen perimeter is painted White with am “Umber” highlight on the door and drawer front details. Cambria Quartz in the “Berwyn” design completes the look in the stylish beveled edge profile.

The island ends and back has been fit with custom doors and furniture baseboard molding for finished look. An island light from our Artcraft line hangs above the center of the kitchen island. Of course no complete kitchen can be showcased this well without our favorite secret weapon… our Diode LED undercabinet lighting. This space wouldn’t look as warm and inviting without it.

Hazelwood Homes- An Inset Instant Classic in Geneseo, IL

How can something so new already be an instant classic? Even though this Geneseo, IL home built recently by Hazelwood Homes is brand new, the look is classic. How do you achieve classic status right away? By selecting details and materials that all lend themselves to a polished, classic look without a date or trend attached to it. Take a look and see what we mean:
Kitchen in a home built by Hazelwood Homes including Dura Supreme inset cabinets and Cambria counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

Nothing about this finished space waves a flag with a year or a single trend on it. There is nothing more universally classic than a clean, white painted kitchen. With tastes and trends varying all across the country a white painted kitchen remains something we can all agree on. This Geneseo, IL family takes the look to the next level by selecting added details you will love.
White inset doors and subway tile for a classic modern farmhouse look. Expert design and material selection for your new home. | VillageHomeStores.com

Painted white cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line in the “Arcadia” door and inset construction is paired with a classic white 3″ x 6″ subway tile backsplash. The tile is from our Rittenhouse line and the “Arctic White” color is in a soft matte finish. The hardwood flooring in this great room space is gorgeous. Casa Bella’s “Baroque Oak” series in the “Marche” finish has such a depth of colors and the look is beautiful. Two countertop materials have been included in this kitchen design. The main perimeter of the kitchen has Cambria Quartz counters in the Torquay design. The polished quartz tops are a great contrast to the matte finish wall tiles. A Stainless Steel appliance suite from our KitchenAid® line looks right at home in the space. This 36″ KitchenAid® Dual Fuel 6-burner range is a hard-working investment for this kitchen.

With 5.1 cu. ft. total capacity and EasyConvect™ Conversion features, this range is commercial in style but easy to use. The immediate control of a gas cooktop and the consistent and efficient use of convection cooking. This range is enviable to any serious home chef but not intimidating to frozen pizza connoisseurs. Two pendants from the Feiss “Harrow” series hang above the large kitchen island. The Oil Rubbed Bronze finish is a great compliment to the dark granite top below and seeded glass gives a New Traditional look to a classic style.
Large kitchen island with brushed granite counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

The main focal point of this kitchen is the island itself. In a close second for your attention is the range and hood wall of cabinetry. A wood hood has been ordered from Dura Supreme to match the surrounding cabinetry. A beautiful mantle shelf has been applied for a classic detail and location for seasonal decor, leaning artwork, or left clear as shown.

A bold eye-catching contrast to the white kitchen is found in the large island counter. A “Black Pearl” granite top is large in size and includes an undermounted farm sink. This dark top is a bold statement but take note of another material selection detail in the granite’s finish… it isn’t polished! In place of a dark, high-gloss polished granite top the “brushed” finish has been selected. This allows the natural stone to give the look of a soapstone or slate style and texture. The installed look is softer and less formal in appearance. A slight arc has been included on the overhang of the island. This end is now ready to accommodate counter-height stools for seating in the new kitchen.

A detail that may go unnoticed at first glance is the style of cabinetry in this kitchen. The doors themselves are a very transitional flat-panel construction.  The detail we are speaking of is how they are not resting atop of the cabinet face frame. Instead these cabinets have been ordered in an “inset” construction. This look has been around as long as cabinet furniture-making has been. Many old homes include built-in cabinets with this same inset door concept. The next time you are near an antique piece of furniture there is a very high chance that you will find the doors are also inset. The cabinet and door all sits flush with the frame of the cabinet and this design choice takes a basic white kitchen and transforms it into an instant classic! Inset cabinetry can be ordered with a hidden hinge (like shown here) or an exposed barrel hinge. Click here to see a past kitchen feature on the blog that showcases the exposed hinge look on an inset door.

Did you know that according to a recent Houzz survey on 2017 trends in the industry we spend nearly 3 hours a day on average in our kitchens? Yes we are socializing and entertaining but we are also many times reading, working from home, or even just watching TV. In a kitchen this stunning it would be a shame to clutter up the countertops with a TV. That is why a space was designated for a small television right above the refrigerator. With this kitchen already including inset doors, adding pocket door hardware that allows the doors to roll into the cabinet box makes the screen visible from anywhere in the kitchen without a door to block the view.

Geneseo, IL- 5 Design Upgrades For Your Kitchen

This beautiful Geneseo, IL remodel has a lot to offer in terms of style and impact. As we take a look around we want to share with you 5 great design upgrades included in this tour that helped take this finished space to the next level. Perhaps one of these details might be right for your own kitchen remodel project.
Kitchen before and after. | VillageHomeStores.com

White painted cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line is paired with “Silver Cloud” granite tops. The cabinetry is from Dura Supreme’s  Bria series of construction. This is a full-access or a “frameless” series of cabinetry. The painted white cabinetry is such a bright and updated change from the original Oak kitchen. The ceramic tile from the original kitchen was able to stay in place because the new kitchen design worked with it.

#1: A Full-Height Backsplash

The first design detail that truly makes a big impact in this kitchen is the installation of a full-height backsplash instead of a tiled space. With a character stone like this “Silver Cloud” granite, a full-height splash gives the opportunity to really showcase the natural veining in the slab. Shifting the beautiful pattern up to a visible, vertical plane also gives a really high-end look.

#2: Mirrored Cabinets

The second design detail that you can include in your space is the use of mirror in place of textured glass in the upper cabinetry. This may even be an upgrade you can make in your existing cabinetry. At first glance, you may have thought these cabinets had glass in them. Take a closer look and you see reflections of the scenic views outside of the new kitchen. Including mirror in kitchens and bathrooms was an up-and-coming trend in 2015 and has been predicted to be a big trend in 2016 and beyond. The look is great but think about how clever this concept is. Nothing is visible behind the mirror! That frees up “display” type cabinets to be used for any and all categories of storage. China hutches, Master Bath linen cabinets, the list goes on of great locations that can benefit by including mirror inserts.

#3: Designate a Drop Zone

The original kitchen footprint has been extended slightly into the casual dining area. A double wall oven from KitchenAid® has been installed for ease of use on the customer’s back. Now loading and unloading items is easy and the tall cabinet includes storage above and below the wall ovens. The double ovens are also perfect for preparing large meals during Holidays and special events. The end of this tall section of cabinetry is capped off with a tall angled end cabinet pantry. With shelving and outlets within this cabinet it is now the perfect space for a drop zone cabinet. Hidden out of sight is a charging station, calendars, mail and all kinds of items that would normally clutter up a countertop.

#4: Upgrade A Busy Appliance

If you don’t drink coffee, why buy a french press? If you don’t bake or use your oven often, maybe pass on convection features. Our point is that you should choose areas of your kitchen to upgrade that you can continue to thank yourself for over and over. A great example is upgrading your cooktop to induction if you cook often and want the best results. This may look like a standard electric cooktop but it is actually an Induction cooktop from KitchenAid®. Induction works using electromagnetic technology. It heats the cooking vessel instead of the surface. This allows you the immediate temperature control of a gas cooktop but in a smooth electric look. The Performance Boost feature allows you to exceed the maximum heat-level setting for up to 10 minutes, perfect for rapid boiling.

#5 Upgrade Access

The Dura Supreme’s Bria series a frameless construction is inspired by European Cabinetry. This allows you full access to the cabinet box. No matter what cabinet line or construction your design includes, you always have the option to place drawered cabinets where doors and slideouts can also be located. Even though the footprint of this island remained the same that upgrade was made with the new island cabinetry.before after island

Now it is easy to access pots and pans and all kinds of added items within the drawers. Cabinet hardware was carefully selected to match the scale of the drawers the handles were placed on. The back of the kitchen island was also upgraded from smooth panels to custom wainscot panels. This upgrade makes a world of a difference in the finished look especially in a great room setting where the island back is highly visible.

This new space is now bright, stylish, and makes a big impact because of the upgrades included. The full-height granite backsplash is breathtaking and including mirrors in the upper cabinets is a gorgeous look. Extending the cabinetry to include wall ovens and a pantry/drop zone allowed an easier oven experience and the new cooking zone has an incredible Induction cooktop. Specialty cabinet inserts were also included and an appliance garage in the kitchen corner keeps the counter from small appliance clutter. There is so much to love about this space.

We included a full video tour of this finished space in a recent episode of the Village Home Show. In that tour, we give a detailed look at induction features and benefits. Press play below to watch it.

Cordova, IL- Rustic Transitional Kitchen Remodel

This Cordova, IL kitchen is a sophisticated approach to the Rustic Transitional style. Rustic Beech cabinetry from our Koch line includes knots and other rustic features and a rich “Chestnut” stain dresses up the space. Solid gray quartz countertops and Stainless Steel appliances complete the look…. and that look is breathtakingly gorgeous! hidden_drawer_cabinet (1)

The “Vicksburg” doorstyle selected is a full-overlay style. This means that the doors and drawer fronts span as far across the cabinet face frames as possible leaving little gap between each cabinet. A great example of this seamless full-overlay style is the pantry area that surrounds the new double drawer refrigerator.

Staggered heights and depths were used to add interest to the large L-shaped layout of wall cabinetry. There are many excellent cabinet storage solutions in this kitchen design. The image below showcases the “X” shaped wine cubbies included. Wine storage and display in the perfect location at the end of the kitchen. The cubbies cap off the wall cabinetry and when entertaining, this leg of the design is perfect to set up as the beverage center.

Many of the specialty storage cabinets are hidden from first glance. You don’t need a pull-out cabinet or borrow space in your pantry cabinet for spices, spice racks can be added to your wall cabinetry. Click the thumbnail below to watch this wall cabinet open up to reveal spice racks installed on the interior of each door.

Of course the best way to optimized the corner of your kitchen is to include a lazy susan cabinet. This kitchen has an all wood susan cabinet in an angled front layout. Replacing the L-shaped susan cabinet with space for a full radius of shelf to turn within.  This is an alternative to the traditional susan shelves that form a “Pac Man” shaped shelf. The same angled front door is repeated in the wall cabinetry above.
Base lazy susan cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.com

You also gain added counter space in the corner when using the angled front style of corner cabinet. Ans speaking of counter space, there is plenty with the new dual-height island design. The built-in cooking center is on the interior side facing the kitchen sink. Tall cabinets form the bar-height side of the island. A overhang on the tops stretches in toward the great room and provide seating for 4 guests.
Two height island in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

Instead of simply adding a panel that looks like finished cabinet doors, why not make them real doors? At 12″ deep, these full-height door cabinets give a polished look to the back of the island plus add a lot of storage. Extra dishes, bulk items, small appliances, even board games and remotes can all be stored here out of sight but right within reach.
Storage on back of kitchen island. | VillageHomeStores.com

Storage is great but many will also appreciate the construction of these Koch Cabinets. This Cordova, IL kitchen has been ordered from Koch’s Imperial Series of construction. This plywood construction series includes upgraded materials as well as upgraded assembly processes that add to the integrity and longevity of your investment. Koch Imperial Series Cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.comAll of these upgrades plus option to upgrade your drawer box construction and guides as well as your door hinges to a soft-close option. The 1/2″ plywood sides may also be ordered with applied 1/4″ veneered skins for finished ends. Talk with your designer at Village Home Stores about the cabinet construction upgrades that are available for you and your project. This customer upgraded to full-extension, soft-close drawer guides and soft-close hinges on the doors. A clean built-in look was achieved in the island by including a wall oven with cooktop installed above in place of a slide-in or freestanding unit. This can be done with a gas, electric or induction cooktop. The appliance package selected for this remodel is from the Whirlpool line available at Village Home Stores.
Wall oven with cooktop above. | VillageHomeStores.com

Surrounding the built-in oven are two tray divider cabinets. To the left of the new oven and tray divider cabinets is a large stack of drawers. This unit looks like a two drawer cabinet but behind the top drawer is a hidden third drawer perfect for utensils, lids, or potholders. Click the thumbnail below to see this hidden third drawer cabinet.

Houzz is a fantastic way to organize your project inspiration and even communicate with your designer at Village Home Stores. If you are building or remodeling anytime soon you will want to download this app to your tablet and phone. The adjacent front sitting room area of the home was also given a whole new look. Two sections of wall surrounding the fireplace now have built-in cabinetry that matches the style and finish of the kitchen. Wood countertops in the same “Chestnut” stain help give the units a custom look but set them apart from the kitchen while keeping everything coordinated.  Another detail is the addition of textured water glass inserts inside of the cabinet doors. The freedom to display items within without the exposed shelves to gather dust.

This home has been updated and is almost unrecognizable from where it began. Step in from the front door and the new open kitchen and living spaces looks like a brand new home worthy of a magazine cover feature! Our thanks to this Cordova, IL family for their business and our hats off to the homeowner who completed his own installation of the kitchen design.
