Quad Cities Kitchen With Black and White Cabinets

Welcome to this stunning new home in Bettendorf Iowa, Quad Cities with kitchen and bath designs by Village Home Stores for Aspen Homes. Every corner of this new home is an example of a chic and sophisticated take on the clean, Scandinavian-inspired finish trends of combining white, matte black, and light woods. Join us on a short photo tour of the kitchen and bathroom spaces in this incredible new home beginning in the kitchen. Koch Cabinetry in the Savannah doorstyle is painted with a “Black” finish on the kitchen island and “White” for the perimeter. Whirlpool appliances and quartz counters are also featured. Let’s have a look around.

Matte black cabinets are continuing to “climb the charts” so to speak in our industry. We have installed full kitchens, kitchenettes, and countless bath vanities, home bars, and kitchen islands in this neutral finish. Here it is used in a traditional two-tone application as an accent color on the island. Another great look is to install black base cabinets and white uppers. See an example of that here in a past feature. Bright, white glossy Hanstone quartz counters in the “Strato” design are installed on the perimeter and kitchen island. And of course any dream kitchen isn’t complete without a great pantry. Check out that hidden walk-in pantry on the fridge wall!

It’s OK to admit your jealous because we are too! We can order one of these tall cabinet fronts to match your kitchen from Village Home Stores. Even just a small niche of space can be transformed into creative storage solutions inside. With the recent year we have all had, many can agree that we are shopping more and more in bulk. So a pantry like this is a wonderful asset to any busy household. Ask your kitchen designer at Village Home Stores how we can create a design for your new or existing home to include this feature.

The hardware for this kitchen is from our Jeffrey Alexander line in a matte black finish. Notice how on the closed pantry doors (above) a larger scale handle is installed. This is a functional and stylish design choice. While these tall doors are sturdy, they would open very flimsy if a small knob were installed to operate them. Matte black metal was also repeated in the two large pendant fixtures that hang above the kitchen island. These stone seeded glass pendants are 12″ wide and 21 1/2″ high in size from our Capital Lighting line. We have this pendant light on display in our showroom currently if you would like to see it in person. The glass texture is a detail that photos just can’t showcase as well as in person.

Another metal finish is introduced with the appliance suite in this kitchen. Whirlpool’s Stainless Steel is a fantastic fit for this complete vision. A front-control freestanding gas range with chimney-style hood above is the focal point of the back wall of the design. On the other wall you will find a french door refrigerator and Sharp microwave drawer. There is something so classic about a white wall of cabinetry with white on white subway tile and a great cooking pair like this.

This Whirlpool range boasts a massive 5.8 cu.ft. of capacity inside the oven and a 5-burner gas cooktop above including an oval central burner. It also includes a customer-favorite: Frozen Bake™ Technology. This takes the True Convection Cooking components in the oven and puts them to work to allow you to place fully frozen items into a cold oven and get amazing results without a preheat. This cooktop is also a dream to clean. The full-width cast iron grates have EZ-2-Lift™ hinges at the back. Just hinge them open, wipe the surface clean and hinge down!

In the kitchen island there is an apron front farm sink flanked by a pullout waste basket cabinet of the left, and a Stainless dishwasher on the right. This Whirlpool dishwasher has a 1 hour wash option and a Sensor cycle that picks the right cycle just for you. Finished items come out “cabinet-dry” dishes thanks to Fan Dry that uses a fan to pull in fresh, dry air. No more drying clean dishes before putting them away!

Of course a large part of a successfully competed great room design is a lighting plan that is well thought out for function and style. We love the linear caged light that hangs above the dining table just off the kitchen. This is the Quorum Olympus 8-light chandelier and it is shown here in the “Noir” finish. Also, can we get an amen for a dining table with a bench seat!? We love this look and Aspen Homes always does such a great job of staging their spec homes!

The bathrooms in this home are just as dreamy and lux as the kitchen! Check out this double vanity principal bathroom below. Plenty of drawer space for storage and counter between sinks. Outlets are installed on the interior of the two linen cabinets for grooming appliances. Bright white Koch cabinets are made even brighter with polished chrome metal details in this bathroom.

A lighting trend we love is installing your bath lighting directly through a custom wall mirror. This always elevates the look of any fixture but showing it off almost in a 360 view. Check out the image below to see this trend in action. Three “Manhattan” wall sconces from our Capital line are installed in this bathroom. One at the center between the sinks and the other two spaced near the linen cabinets.

Using the mate black trend in a bathroom can also be done while keeping a space feeling open and bright. Mate black accents can help to make graphic statements in your overall design. We love this bathroom in the home that includes two black framed mirrors with lighting, plumbing, and cabinet hardware all in a matte black. Just like the kitchen island lights, these “Colton” Capital fixtures combine a black metal finish with a textured glass.

The same Savannah door from the kitchen is used in this bathroom but a subtle gray paint named “Dusk” is applied. The hardware and lighting accents aren’t the only thing with a softer, matter finish applied. We also can order our cultured vanity tops in a matte finish. The Onyx Collection is a line that offers tops and shower systems. They have tons of modern bowl shapes, and so many colors to choose from. This is not the shell-bowl pink marbled top from your great grandma’s house folks…. but believe it or not its the same product and concept. Matte white is always a classic look. Your designer at Village may ask if you are in need of any end splashes for your top. Below is an example of a (right) end splash. On tops with sinks near a wall or cabinet, these protect that surface from water splashing up.

Gray Stained Hickory Home Bar With Matte Black Counters

The gorgeous kitchen we shared in our last blog post wasn’t the only area that we worked on in this Betendorf Iowa home. Village Home Stores provided design and materials for this home from our Cabinetry, Countertops, Appliances, Flooring, Wall Tile, Lighting, and Hardware departments. So let us take a trip from that open concept upstairs, and wander down to the lower level of this home to see the bar area. On our way downstairs, take a look at the stairwell flooring selections we installed.

The “Saddle” engineered oak flooring from the upstairs great room is repeated on the stairwell landing. This breaks up the carpeting and adds such a rich look to the space. Our best-selling DreamWeaver Metropolitan Series carpeting has been installed in the bedrooms, closets, and lower level of this home. The “Iron Frost” color is the perfect neutral. It blends beige and gray colors to create a soft, comfortable floor surface. This DreamWeaver carpet is a solution dyed carpet. That means it won’t fade, show wear, stain, or show bleach stains from spot cleaning. The color of this carpeting is the same throughout the entire fiber of the carpet, not just the outside surface. Learn more about this PureColor® Technology here on the DreamWeaver website. But for now… let’s head to the bar!

Wow! What a handsome wet bar in such a small footprint! Proof that just a few cabinets and a great bar design can upgrade the look and function of any entertaining space. This back bar with sink and front bar-height counter is a perfect layout. Wall cabinets with a single lower drawer bookend each side and extend all the way down to the counters. A glass mosaic tile accents the the back wall and is capped off at the top with a crown molding.

This tiled wall can be used in a number of ways. Shelving can be added, wall art, a clock, a wall-mount TV, or just as we have it shown. Designing a home bar doesn’t mean you have to install an entire second kitchen in your home. Many customers include a sink and just a few appliances in their design. In this home we installed a single glass-front beverage cooler and microwave drawer with a bar sink and plenty of cabinet storage.

The “Stone” stain from our Koch Cabinetry line has quickly become a bestseller this year. We have installed this finish as whole kitchen projects as well as accent islands and many bathroom vanities. Here in this wet bar we applied this warm gray stain to Koch’s Prairie door in a Hickory wood. Amerock handles in a “Gunmetal” finish look amazing against the stained wood. This home is located in Bettendorf, Iowa but we must mention that the name of this handle from Amerock is “Davenport” how fun is that!?

Golden Lighting mini pendant lights with chain in Pewter finish hang in a Betendorf Quad Cities home bar.

The other metal finishes in this bar compliment this Gunmetal finish with the Stainless appliances and Pewter lighting fixtures from Golden Lighting. Three mini pendants hang above the bar height seating area. These mini-pendants are stylish and notice they are on a chain! Have a tricky light location in your current home? Don’t forget you can “swag” anything on a chain or cord! Snap a photo of your space and ask a Village Home Stores lighting expert about your options.

Across the room is a game table area. We installed a larger pendant light from this same Golden Lighting series there. The same lines and style of the mini-pendants in a larger scale. The lighting selected in this home all looks so great as you walk throughout the house. Selecting lighting for your home can be a fun process and the right lights can add so much personality to a finished space.

You don’t have to have every single light fixture in a home match each other. In fact the best lighting plans we work on include lights from varied brands and use varied finishes. Press play below to see a few of the fixtures we installed all under the same roof of this home:

Many of the metal finishes in the rest of the home are a matte black or dark bronze finish. We love the graphic look of a black fixture against a neutral background like a white kitchen or a foyer ceiling. Black is a great accent color to consider. Upstairs in this home we included a painted black island in the kitchen. In the lower level bar we used a black granite countertop.

This is a natural stone top called “Black Pearl” and that soft, leathery look you see in these images comes from the “Brushed” finish applied to the granite. Instead of a high-gloss polished stone, these slabs are roughed up with an entirely different set of tools to give the stone a touchable texture without the dark, high-gloss black granite look. Black Pearl Brushed granite is a great surface to consider if you are looking to accent your design with some matte black finishes and want a durable surface.

The front of the bar design is constructed with two base cabinets set at a bar height. A half-wall was built and and paneling surrounds the finished peninsula. An outlet is located on the end of this bar for crockpots, charging devices, or a blender. A furniture style baseboard molding completes the look where the toespace meets the tiled floors.

Of course a home bar needs cold beverages! And this 24″ undercounter Danby cooler has a glass-front and a 5.3 cu. ft. capacity. It holds up to 112 beverage cans and 11 bottles of wine! Shop our appliances online, anytime at villagehomestores.com. This bar area will be perfect for entertaining groups of any size. It is located on one end of the lower level family room space. Sliding doors to the backyard makes this bar just steps from outdoor gatherings as well.

Our cabinetry is not just for kitchens, bars and bathrooms. We designed matching Hickory “Stone” built-in cabinetry for the lower level fireplace wall. This wall turned out so great! Let’s revisit this carpeting selection (shown below) one more time as we notice the blend of warm neutrals looks perfect with the stone selected for the fireplace. The “Stone” stain is the perfect compliment as it offers a great contrast and blends in with so many of the on-trend grays available in home furnishings and accessories now.

While the layout of a “built-in” cabinet hasn’t changed much over time, how we style one has. Some homes still pack shelves full of layers of books or movies and others keep it minimal or seasonal with decor. Typically a built in area includes doored base cabinets with open shelving above. A modern take on this can be seen when floating shelves are installed with no side or back. Here we installed full-height door bases and bookshelf cabinets trimmed off with crown molding. The Hickory crown molding travels across the fireplace section and connects to the opposite shelf side.

East Moline, IL- Wall Removed to Create Multiple Dining Options

We were so thrilled to begin this kitchen remodel in East Moline while we were filming a season of our TV show. It allowed us the opportunity to go beyond just showing you some before photos and then tour the finished space. Instead we were able to really show you the entire process! Here is the finished space including Birch cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Vicksburg” doorstyle. Vicksburg is a full-overlay door with a solid-wood center panel.
Remodeled kitchen with wall removed. | VillageHomeStores.com

The original kitchen (shown below) included dark stained cabinetry in a U-shape layout with a peninsula area of base cabinets and wall cabinetry suspended above. This created a very crowded feel to the kitchen when in it working or entering it from the front door. Laminate countertops with a drop-in sink and white appliances were all a part of the old kitchen that was ready for an update.
kitchen-before-east-moline

Now the new kitchen is open and incredibly stylish! The back wall of the kitchen has been removed and in its place is a bar-height knee wall with an overhang for seating. These 4 barstools are just the beginning of the many dining options this entire open concept now has. Outside of the new kitchen are two front rooms, each ready to be considered a formal Dining Room space. Why designate one room as a dining room when the crowd you entertain changes over time? Now that this couple has children and grandchildren coming for meals, they can fill the entire space with tables and seating if needed!

Want a better idea of what a jobsite looks like between the before photos and all the beautiful after photos we share here on the blog? Press play below to watch the episode of the Village Home Show including the entire remodel story from this East Moline, IL kitchen. Tour this kitchen with the before and after story plus everything in between.

What a difference a fresh new layout can make for the entire main level of this home! As youi saw in the episode, we installed new wood floors throughout. Depending on the flooring material and the project itself, your floors may need an extra layer of protection during the remodel process. In the case of this East Moline home a heavy-duty temporary floor protection is used named Ram Board. The Paramount Acacia hardwood flooring is installed and almost immediately after installation the durable floor protecting paper goes over it. kitchen-during-east-moline

The next few weeks of this kitchen floor’s installed lifespan will be it’s most challenged. That is why we take no risks of a scratch or a dent as crews work atop the new floors. We even left this Ram Board in place while filming the kitchen for the show. Once everything is finished and the appliances have been delivered and installed, the Ram Board is removed to reveal your new flooring. Acacia wood flooring from the Quad Cities flooring experts at Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

This Acacia is from the Bucks Country series in the “Teak” finish. The flooring finish is a great compliment to the kitchen cabinetry. The darkest areas of the flooring color are a great match to the Birch “Brandy” stain on the cabinets. Our favorite corner of the new kitchen is this lighted glass-door cabinet with wine storage. Remodeled East Moline, IL kitchen including a wine display cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.com

Glass shelves allow the LED lighting to wash the interior of the cabinet with light. A decorative winerack below can house plenty of bottles. Grecian white interlocking marble mosaic tile reflects on the new polished “Black Pearl” granite counters.
east-moline-tileThere are many who think selecting a dark granite top for their project might make a room seem very small when paired with dark cabinetry. In this East Moline, IL kitchen, the finished combination if gorgeous! Rich, polished stone and a Birch wood with a rich Cherry look. The finishes in this now opened space are perfection. East Moline kitchen remodeled by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.comWith the wall removed and the kitchen opened up into the nearby Dining Room area, the space has plenty of light within it. Opposite the peninsula wall is a large window (show in image above) This natural light teams up with our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system and plenty of new can lights for a bright space day and night. There is plenty of storage in the new kitchen including a tall pantry cabinet next to the refrigerator.Pantry cabinet near refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com

A brand new suite of Whirlpool® appliances in Stainless Steel have been installed in the newly remodeled kitchen. The standard-depth refrigerator includes a full-width temperature controlled wide pantry area behind the french doors. A new freestanding electric range boasts 6.4 cu. ft. of capacity and Convection features.

Moline, IL- The Best Remodels Are The Ones You Never Knew Happened

The best remodels are the ones you never knew happened? What on Earth do we mean by this?!? Simply that a kitchen (or any well-designed space) should look naturally “at home” in your home. The fact that it has been remodeled recently shouldn’t necessarily be a dead giveaway.  If that is apparent, you run the risk of it looking “dated” within 5 years or so. This is especially true for historic homes. Making classic choices in materials and application that enhance and compliment your home are always the right choices. A great example of this is a kitchen remodel we recently completed in Moline, IL. This new kitchen looks perfectly at home in the space yet updated with modern touches at the same time. We will confidently be able to say the same thing years down the road. Remodeled Moline, IL kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

A cabinet design using our Koch Classic line is installed in the “Prairie” doorstyle in a painted “White” finish. A single slab-style drawer front has been selected for the drawers. Floating shelves in an Oak wood stained in a “Mocha” finish accent the sink wall.  Neutral gray tone-on tone Engineered Quartz counters break up the space and a dark hardwood floor adds drama to the completed look. farmhouse kitchen ideas | VillageHomeStores.com

beforeThe original kitchen was in this same area of the back of the home. For storage however, only a single wall of cabinetry surrounding the sink was installed. This left an empty wall for the range to rest on and a refrigerator to float on another. Not ideal for a busy family. Also take into consideration ther is no dishwasher in the original layout. put a drying rack on that countertop and now there is even less space available. The new layout converts this single-wall design into an L-shape and adds storage in every inch possible. Added storage and plenty of added counter space that is so important surrounding the cooking center of the new kitchen. With the range wall now included in the cabinetry layout, the sink wall can have a more open look. Instead of a solid block of built-in cabinetry, there are glass-front cabinets and contrasting floating shelves.  The same dark wood finish from the floors is repeated in the oak floating shelves installed to the left of the sink. These floating shelves add a modern detail to the New-Traditional styled space. Painted white kitchen ideas. | VillageHomeStores.comFloating shelves in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.comThese floating shelves are balanced by the classic glass-front cabinet doors on the opposite side of the sink. The best result from this new cabinet design on the sink wall is how open and uncrowded the user at the sink now feels. Natural light pours in from the window above the sink as well as the others on the back wall of the home. An always classic choice in a kitchen design like this is the use of an apron-front or “farmhouse” sink. This single decision can make such a huge impact of the finished look of the kitchen. This 26″ wide single-well apron sink has been under-mounted to Engineered Quartz counters in the “Fossil Gray” color. A standard “Eased” edge is another classic choice for the project.  A heavy and ornate “Ogee” edge would seem out of place here.

farm_sinkAnother classic choice is the application of an apron sink. It is almost impossible to imagine this kitchen without an apron-front sink. Of course the most effortlessly classic pairing with an apron-front sink is subway tile. This kitchen takes that concept and steps it up a bit with an incredible material detail: an elongated size. Long Subway Tile backsplash in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

While a classic subway tile may measure 3″ x 6″, these elongated tiles from our American Olean line are 2″ x 8″. The series is named “Urban Canvas” and the color is “Ice White”. This exaggerates the classic look of subway tile and makes a huge impact with the detail. The use of simple and clean lines in the details of your overall design can help spotlight other key areas.  A subtle gray quartz top doesn’t distract from the overall look. By selecting a complimenting gray grout to the quartz counters it helps to showcases the tile shape. dishwasher_with_third_rack

The kitchen appliances selected for this Moline home bring modern conveniences and a high-end look to the space. KitchenAid’s new look gets you professional-level results and appearance.  The new kitchen layout now includes a space for this Stainless Steel dishwasher. A third rack on the interior of this dishwasher makes it easy to clean hard-to-place items such as spatulas, serving utensils and measuring cups, freeing up space in the lower two racks. Speaking of space, the range in this kitchen has a lot of it and it is just a 30″ range! This 30″ Gas convection Slide-In Range  has a great look and a lot of fantastic features including a baking drawer.
Warming drawer | VillageHomeStores.com

Yes you read that correctly. This isn’t just a warming drawer, it is a baking drawer! This range comes armed with the easy to use drawer that allows you to keep warm, slow cook or bake at a different temperature from the oven plus the ability to keep dishes warm. The ability to bake at two temperatures and a total oven capacity of 6.5 cu. ft. This range is ready for your largest of dinner parties. kitchen_painted_white

cooktopThis gas unit from KitchenAid measures 30″ in width and fits any current opening that a freestanding range may leave. The cooktop on the unit boasts a 5-burner layout. 5 burners with a wide range of cooking power from 5,000 to 19,000 BTU’s. Everything from a rolling boil to a delicate simmer is covered. The continuous grates make it easy to slide from burner to burner if needed.

Port Byron, IL Remodel: An Upscale and Pet-Friendly Before & After

This Port Byron, IL couple wanted their remodeled kitchen to have an upscale look but still seem approachable and warm. We think their design and materials from Village Home Stores have achieved this look perfectly! Rich dark cabinets in a Beech wood have been stained in a “Mocha” finish from our Koch Classic line. “Yukon” Quartz countertops are a contrast in color and sheen.
Kitchen remodel in Port Byron, IL | VillageHomeStores.com

Such a transformation has taken place! The original kitchen (see before photo below) included soffits at the ceiling and basic slab-style cabinetry. There was plenty of space in the center of the kitchen to accommodate a temporary island/table area. An L-shaped section of cabinetry on one side of the kitchen and a row of cabinets beneath the window on the other side.
before

The new design took all usable space and kitchen a new design solution has been installed including a peninsula. This peninsula helps divide the kitchen from the living area and it also adds an overhang area for counter-height seating. There is a pub-height table right outside of the new kitchen for more seating when needed. The remodeled open concept now seems more like one large and cohesive look from kitchen into the dining/living space.
kitchen_seating

The dark cabinets and quartz counters look sophisticated and beautiful but the flooring and backsplash once again almost steal the whole show! The customer pointed out when we arrived to photograph the finished space that new visitors are always first to mention the flooring. Good thing their dog “Buoy” seems to have a bright future in modeling because he can’t wait to show you his new floors.
AduraScratchResist

Mannington Adura Plank flooring with Scratch Resist technology. | VillageHomeStores.comJust look at this guy. Buoy is a very good dog but he does have paws and claws. No worries though because his owners selected Mannington’s Adura Plank flooring with Scratch Resist Technology. This patented performance coating with Aluminum Oxide helps keep floors looking newer longer by providing exceptional resistance to everyday household scratches.  Watch a video on Scratch Resist here to see how this product is so durable it wears off the ridges of a quarter before any damage is made to the floor the quarter is rubbed onto. No worries Buoy, this Oak “Rawhide” colored floor is as pet-friendly as you can find! Adura Plank flooring is a Luxury Vinyl Tile. We call this material “LVT” for short and while you may have seen us feature more ceramic look LVT here on the blog, the wood look planks are just as awesome!

With the new cabinet layout came added storage solutions for the space. A tall pantry caps off the window wall of the kitchen. This cabinet has been fit with five slide-out shelves so there is plenty of space in this 24″ deep unit for dry goods and even small appliances. This tall piece really helps anchor the look of this section in the kitchen.

This wall of the kitchen includes a window and a nice stretch of countertop surface. With the new addition of the peninsula, the counter space has doubled. This corner has now become a fantastic place for many tasks. meal prep, serving, and even a dining space with the counter-height seating. Even though there can’t be wall cabinets above this added peninsula, the base cabinets make up in great storage space. A stack of two deep drawers can house pots and pans. A 5-piece drawer front option has been selected for this project. Instead of a smooth, “slab” style these 5-piece option looks more similar to the doors of the cabinetry.

Many times selecting this 5-piece drawer-front option is no added cost to your cabinet purchase. Be sure to discuss which drawer front style is best for your project with your designer from Village Home Stores.  There are of course other specialty cabinets included in the new kitchen. A pull-out trash cabinet, tray divider cabinet, and even a wood divided silverware drawer (see below). Making the most of your cabinet space is how you end up with a great design that you can fall in love with every time you use it.

The doorstyle selected for this Port Byron kitchen is named “Aspen” by our Koch Classic line. A flat-panel is the most common door choice when you are looking to end up with a more “Transitional” finished kitchen. It is important to point out though that flat-panel doors can come in a variety of styles and even construction.  If you scroll back up to look at the open pantry door you will see the inside of that open door looks like a raised panel of wood. That is because the center of the “Aspen” doors are solid wood center panels. This makes for a more sturdy construction and gives a more rich and realistic woodgrain than a veneered look.

The rails and stiles that create the frame around this center panel are also varied in size on the doors. Transitional meets Contemporary, the narrow sides with thicker top and bottom portions of this door give a unique style and look to the cabinet. The look it finished off with a standard crown molding. The soffits have been removed and the new layout has cabinetry stretching all the way to the ceilings. The depths of some of these wall cabinets has been varied to add extra design interest.

If the cabinetry or flooring didn’t steal your attention, the mosaic tile backsplash certainly will! Pietra Art mosaic tile from the “Woodland Park” series has been installed throughout. This mosaic tile perfectly blends the colors from the cabinetry, countertop, and flooring all into one multi-colored mosaic.

The kitchen tile backsplash is illuminated and showcased by our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system. The high contrast from the dark cabinetry to the lighted tile and counters make this tiled surface even more dramatic. We love that there are even Stainless Steel lines in the mosaic to help tie in the appliances with the complete look.

This kitchen remodel is the type of space that we think anyone can take something away from touring. The blend of materials and colors all showcase just some of the many options available when working on your own kitchen. Transitional style kitchens give clean and timeless looks without heavy or ornate design elements. This look reads high-end and effortless. We can say though that getting this effortless look did take work. Our thanks to Durian Builders for the work they did in this home. “Buoy” and his family love their new kitchen from Village Home Stores.
