Aspen Homes- Tastefully On Trend Meets Timeless

Many times customers are hesitant to embrace something labeled as a “trend” because they fear the look will be dated so quickly. The truth is in our industry…trends aren’t just a flash in the pan. Ever. For design choices like Gray Stains or Black Accents, these “trends” are long-term. Once you begin to see certain trends appear on magazine covers and in spaces on your favorite TV shows, the industry has committed to the concept. This latest project we completed with Aspen Homes LLC is so gorgeous we barely know where to begin the tour!  As we show you around the space we will pay attention to key trends at work in the kitchen:

Black Details And Accents In The Kitchen:

Kitchen with black window accent. Design and materials from Village Home Stores for Aspen Homes. | VillageHomeStores.com

We love the black trim detail added to this Bettendorf, IA home. A farmhouse sink sits beneath three windows on one wall of the kitchen design. These three black windows add style and visual rhythm to the space. The two “Wadsworth” pendants that hang above the kitchen island are from our Hudson Valley line. Selecting the perfect lighting for your overall look is so important. The kitchen island pendants in this home are the perfect example of what we mean.

“Both the sconces and the island pendants get a lot of attention. I’m glad I took a risk with those pendants because they seem to tie it all together and ground a space filled with so much white.” -homeowner

That quote from the homeowner says it all! They truly do complete the entire design. The black accent, the shape, the brass, the circle element (see the barn door below), it is all perfection! A pendant like that in a catalog or our showroom may seem like a bold statement but our lighting team works hard with our clients to select fixtures perfect for their space. A statement may seem a bit out of your comfort level at the time but the impact will be great!

Introduce Gold Accents:

Between the windows hang “Margeaux” wall sconces from our Hinkley line. The “Vintage Brass” finish on the sconces is repeated in the kitchen cabinet hardware and accents on the island pendant lights. You do not have to go “all in” on this Gold Accent trend. Just introducing a few locations for it is great! New Traditional style is all about balancing old looks with new materials. In some cases New Traditional blends old finishes with new shapes and styles. Mixing metal finishes can look great when executed correctly and our team is here to help you find the perfect balance.

Soften The Look With Matte Finishes:

A great way to make a space more welcoming and less “cold” is to use softer, more matte finishes. Even a cold, hard material like granite can seem more approachable. In this case, a Granite named “Black Pearl” has been installed as the perimeter countertop material. Instead of a high-polished and reflective finish, the “Brushed” finish is used. The result: and Old World look almost like that of a soapstone countertop. The island countertop is from our Cambria Quartz line in their “Summerhill” design. Summerhill blends all of the surrounding colors together perfectly and offers up a natural stone veining look that adds character to the island.

Want a cabinet style and finish that is truly timeless? If you look at some of your own favorite kitchen spaces saved to your Pinterest or Houzz accounts is the common denominator perhaps a white painted cabinet? A flat-panel doorstyle in a white paint is as timeless of a cabinet commitment you can make. This kitchen has been installed in the “Savannah” door from our Koch Classic line. Chances are if you are drawn to the look of a white painted cabinet, you are also looking at Subway tile. This kitchen takes that classic subway tile and installs it all the way to the ceiling:

“It’s funny how many people love that the subway tile is taken to the ceiling. It was a simple addition that makes it all feel more special.” -homeowner

White painted flat-panel cabinetry and subway tile. We are giving you the definite green light for that winning combination! Again, these are classic and timeless selections you can make for your overall permanent investment. If 15 years from now you wanted to give this kitchen a new look, the entire kitchen may not need to come out to get that “new” update.

Showcase Your Workspace:

If you are going to invest in a great space to prepare meals, why not shine the spotlight on your busiest area? Cooking zones are where all the activity happens so why not make them the focal point of the space? Kitchens are no longer hidden in the back corner of a home. They have become the very center of all activity throughout your day. In this kitchen a unique hood design makes a statement of its own on the range wall. This custom wood hood aligns with the angle of the kitchen ceiling. A custom hood insert and 1200 CFM blower are fit on the interior of the hood. A clean hood design with a contrasting band of wood at the base completes the look. Below that hood is an envy-worthy 48″ wide range:

This KitchenAid® Dual Fuel, commercial-style range has 6 gas burners and a chrome electric griddle. The griddle provides exceptional cooking performance and features an easy-to-clean surface. Why Dual Fuel? This range combines the precise control of a gas cooking surface with an electric oven. In the culinary world even the most demanding of cooks can agree that dual fuel is the “best of both worlds” situation for a range. Immediate control for the cooktop and consistent baking, roasting, and broiling in the oven.

Warm Gray Stains:

Gray stains aren’t just still “in style”, they are growing and growing in popularity! Each of our cabinet lines have invested in continuing to add gray stains to their finish options. Grays have started to trend toward the warmer look. Warm grays blend well with other wood finishes and paints.

In this kitchen a tall pantry cabinet with drawers is finished in a contrasting gray stain named “Stone”. The same Savannah Doorstyle used in the main kitchen is a Cherry wood on the pantry cabinet. Cherry offers a warm and rich woodgrain for the “Stone” stain. We love the use of a contrasting cabinet finish in an unexpected application. We have come to expect the kitchen island, or perhaps a hood to have a contrast finish. Here the location gives the tall cabinet almost the look of a freestanding furniture piece.

This layout also provides the illusion of two kitchen islands. A peninsula runs parallel to the kitchen island. Aspen Homes- Fall Parade of Homes Upscale Modern Farmhouse Style

We love that twice a year we get to attend the Q.C.B.R. Parade of homes. Every Spring and Fall you have the chance to tour beautiful new homes built right here in the Quad Cities. Having our products in these homes is an honor. We wanted to share with you the beautiful “Ridgewood” home from the 2016 Fall Parade built by Aspen Homes, LLC in Bettendorf, IA.

The perimeter cabinetry for the main kitchen area is the “Prairie” door in a Hickory wood. Koch Classic’s gorgeous “Stone” stain has been applied and the natural variation of the Hickory woodtones is enhanced. This completed design is an amazing example of “warm gray” at its best. Not only are the grays themselves warm tones, the use of stain instead of a paint allows the woodgrain to come through. Woodgrains have a way of giving a natural warmth to a space and this kitchen is no exception. It is warm, inviting, and upscale.

For a unique two-toned island application the “Stone” stain is repeated on each end. An “X” end cap has been assembled and applied for a dramatic look. The stain is a perfect subtle contrast to the “Taupe” paint of the kitchen island. This island design is truly unique and eye-catching. An overhang on the back of the island includes plenty of space for counter-height bar stool seating.

Modern farmhouse kitchen ideas. | VillageHomeStores.comBlending a variety of natural textures and materials helps to suggest the farmhouse style. Adding upscale details like polished stone counters, gold metals, and the use of clean lines and edges take that style to a more refined and classic level.  The “Calcutta Gold” Quartz countertops give the look of a natural marble material, but once installed have all the qualities of an Engineered Quartz: no maintenance at all! We absolutely love the great room light selected from Uttermost that includes gold finishes and leather bands. Great designs are well balanced and thought out. The team at Aspen Homes works closely with our designers here in the showroom to select the perfect palette for every area of your space.  When you have a Great Room setting, every detail selected matters. Selecting a smaller version of this leather Great Room light would have looked amazing above the Dining Room table. Instead, two unique lights were installed and make a statement that helped make this QCBR Parade Home stand out in a very memorable way! Modern farmhouse lighting. | VillageHomeStores.com

Two four-light mini chandeliers by Kichler are a blend of antiqued brass finish, Edison-style bulbs, and  playful exposed cords. With such a bold statement in the Dining Room, a more subtle selection was made above the kitchen island. foyerTwo seeded glass orb pendants from Kichler are the perfect choice above the island. Just around the corner from the Kitchen and Dining spaces is the front Foyer entry to the home.  This same orb shape is repeated but in a caged look including exposed Edison-style bulbs.  We are focusing on the lighting in this project feature because it is truly an important “layer” to your finishes spaces. Many times when building a new home, selecting the lighting can become an overwhelming task after so many other decisions have been made. That is why we have expert lighting designers to help guide you to help see the “big picture”. The bathrooms in this home also include some gorgeous lighting selections. In the Master Bathroom, the lighting becomes the main focal point of the space. Three-light vanity lights provide task lighting above each sink. The main showstopper is the classic and stylish three-light chandelier in the center of the Bath.

The Polished Nickel finish sparkles and shines. Frameless mirrors by Uttermost hang above each sink station. The faceted look of the mirror edges bounce light allover the Master Bathroom. Vanity cabinets from our Koch Classic line are in the “Prairie” doorstyle and painted in the “Fog” finish.  With so much shine and sparkle in the space, a subtle matte finish was applied to the Onyx Collection cultured marble vanity tops. The shared Bath (shown below) also keeps the same warm grays in the mix but brings the Kitchen cabinetry finish into the space. The “Stone” stain on the Hickory wood enhances the woodgrain and adds dimension to the color. Just look at one of the cabinet doors and you will see the beautiful variation of wood tones that are shown.

Gray stained cabinet bathroom ideas. | VillageHomeStores.comThe same matte finish Onyx Collection top in solid “White” is installed in the Bathroom. Again a mirror was selected void of any metal or wood frame. The “Graziano” oval mirrors also by Uttermost are a gorgeous choice. A long double-bowl vanity and a tall linen cabinet provide a lot of storage. These beautiful bath retreats are proof that warm grays have certainly replaced basic beiges in materials selected for new home construction! Cordova, IL- Rustic Transitional Kitchen Remodel

This Cordova, IL kitchen is a sophisticated approach to the Rustic Transitional style. Rustic Beech cabinetry from our Koch line includes knots and other rustic features and a rich “Chestnut” stain dresses up the space. Solid gray quartz countertops and Stainless Steel appliances complete the look…. and that look is breathtakingly gorgeous! hidden_drawer_cabinet (1)

The “Vicksburg” doorstyle selected is a full-overlay style. This means that the doors and drawer fronts span as far across the cabinet face frames as possible leaving little gap between each cabinet. A great example of this seamless full-overlay style is the pantry area that surrounds the new double drawer refrigerator.

Staggered heights and depths were used to add interest to the large L-shaped layout of wall cabinetry. There are many excellent cabinet storage solutions in this kitchen design. The image below showcases the “X” shaped wine cubbies included. Wine storage and display in the perfect location at the end of the kitchen. The cubbies cap off the wall cabinetry and when entertaining, this leg of the design is perfect to set up as the beverage center.

Many of the specialty storage cabinets are hidden from first glance. You don’t need a pull-out cabinet or borrow space in your pantry cabinet for spices, spice racks can be added to your wall cabinetry. Click the thumbnail below to watch this wall cabinet open up to reveal spice racks installed on the interior of each door.

Of course the best way to optimized the corner of your kitchen is to include a lazy susan cabinet. This kitchen has an all wood susan cabinet in an angled front layout. Replacing the L-shaped susan cabinet with space for a full radius of shelf to turn within.  This is an alternative to the traditional susan shelves that form a “Pac Man” shaped shelf. The same angled front door is repeated in the wall cabinetry above.

You also gain added counter space in the corner when using the angled front style of corner cabinet. Ans speaking of counter space, there is plenty with the new dual-height island design. The built-in cooking center is on the interior side facing the kitchen sink. Tall cabinets form the bar-height side of the island. A overhang on the tops stretches in toward the great room and provide seating for 4 guests.

Instead of simply adding a panel that looks like finished cabinet doors, why not make them real doors? At 12″ deep, these full-height door cabinets give a polished look to the back of the island plus add a lot of storage. Extra dishes, bulk items, small appliances, even board games and remotes can all be stored here out of sight but right within reach.
Storage on back of kitchen island. | VillageHomeStores.com

Storage is great but many will also appreciate the construction of these Koch Cabinets. This Cordova, IL kitchen has been ordered from Koch’s Imperial Series of construction. This plywood construction series includes upgraded materials as well as upgraded assembly processes that add to the integrity and longevity of your investment. Koch Imperial Series Cabinetry. | VillageHomeStores.comAll of these upgrades plus option to upgrade your drawer box construction and guides as well as your door hinges to a soft-close option. The 1/2″ plywood sides may also be ordered with applied 1/4″ veneered skins for finished ends. Talk with your designer at Village Home Stores about the cabinet construction upgrades that are available for you and your project. This customer upgraded to full-extension, soft-close drawer guides and soft-close hinges on the doors. A clean built-in look was achieved in the island by including a wall oven with cooktop installed above in place of a slide-in or freestanding unit. This can be done with a gas, electric or induction cooktop. The appliance package selected for this remodel is from the Whirlpool line available at Village Home Stores.

Surrounding the built-in oven are two tray divider cabinets. To the left of the new oven and tray divider cabinets is a large stack of drawers. This unit looks like a two drawer cabinet but behind the top drawer is a hidden third drawer perfect for utensils, lids, or potholders. Click the thumbnail below to see this hidden third drawer cabinet.

Houzz is a fantastic way to organize your project inspiration and even communicate with your designer at Village Home Stores. If you are building or remodeling anytime soon you will want to download this app to your tablet and phone. The adjacent front sitting room area of the home was also given a whole new look. Two sections of wall surrounding the fireplace now have built-in cabinetry that matches the style and finish of the kitchen. Wood countertops in the same “Chestnut” stain help give the units a custom look but set them apart from the kitchen while keeping everything coordinated.  Another detail is the addition of textured water glass inserts inside of the cabinet doors. The freedom to display items within without the exposed shelves to gather dust.

This home has been updated and is almost unrecognizable from where it began. Step in from the front door and the new open kitchen and living spaces looks like a brand new home worthy of a magazine cover feature! Prophetstown, IL: Smokey & Stylish Hall Bathroom

Smokey gray finishes and unique material selections make this Hall Bathroom stylish and welcoming in a rural Prophetstown, IL home remodeled by Village Home Stores. Proof that a gorgeous Bath is not just reserved for Master Bathrooms, this space is magazine-cover worthy! We design and remodel so many bathrooms throughout the Quad Cities Region and without a doubt the most sought-after look for them is a custom tiled shower space like this Hall Bath features.

Custom Tiled Shower:
Custom tiled shower. | VillageHomeStores.com

This custom space has been fit with a selection of finishes in a warm gray palette. This is a neutral collection of materials that is updated and chic. A modern size and shaped wall tile is paired with a stylish mosaic accent deco line. The 12″ x 24″ wall tiles and 2″ x 2″ shower floor tiles are by Mannington from the Catalina Driftwood series. The 12″ wide deco line is a Glazzio mosaic from the Titanium Field: Glass and Slate Series. This mosaic includes colors from the entire finished Bath and helps tie the entire look together. These shower tile selections allow the Oil-Rubbed Bronze fixtures to stand out. When you are creating a custom tiled shower be sure to take plenty of time to select the best shower fixtures for you and your use.

Select Shower Fixtures:

Many custom showers include multiple shower sprays and other great features. A removable spray arm can be helpful when using the shower but consider that they are also very helpful when cleaning the shower. These removable spray arms can also adjust in height/location for easier use for shorter users or those who are aging in their home and seeking a “Universal” design for handicap accessibility.

Add a Custom Niche or Bench:

tiled shower shelf. | VillageHomeStores.com

We continue to stay busy with bathroom remodels all throughout the Quad Cities Region. Custom tiled showers at the most popular choice. Adding tiled bench seats and toiletry niches is always recommended. Custom tiled showers grant you the luxury of making the shower space exactly how you want it to look and function. Tiled niches can become an integrated and functional area like the one shown here, or even an accent area. Take a look at our ideabook here over on Houzz.com that features a full album of niches and benches from custom tiled showers we have installed. Consider tiling the back of your niche with the accent tile you have included in other areas of the bathroom. This can draw attention to this great custom feature plus help you find the niche easier when using the shower.

Glass Shower Door Entry:

Your team at Village Home Stores will arrange to have a custom glass door entry or fixed glass wall installed perfect for your project. Depending on the size and layout of your new shower, your entrance will vary. In the case of this Hall Bath, a threshold was needed and a fixed pane of glass was paired with a glass door for entry.threshold

This Bath also includes a vanity area that makes an incredible first impressions for guests. A furniture-style bath vanity from our Koch Classic line of cabinetry gives an open look with a shelf and legs below. A decorative framed mirror and vanity light above completes the look.Smoke finished caninet. | VillageHomeStores.com

Furniture style vanity. | VillageHomeStores.comThe “Savannah” door in the Hickory “Stone” stain gives a Rustic Transitional look the the space. Gray stains and paints continue to stay on trend with a forecast to remain so for many years to come. This choice gives a rich look without the super dark contemporary feel of a deep Espresso or Java-colored stain. The open shelf below can be used for decorative items or even baskets with added toiletries or towels.

The same Glazzio mosaic tile used to accent the custom shower was installed as a 4″ tall backsplash above the vanity top. A Cambria Quartz top in the “Ramsey” design is durable and sleek. A beveled edge profile has been applied. Engineered Quartz is an excellent choice for a bathroom vanity top because it is maintenance free and can’t be harmed by any lotions, cleaners, or other products you might spill onto it in the Bath. Accent tile as backsplash. | VillageHomeStores.com

East Moline Remodel: Hickory Steals The Show!

headerAre you looking to make a warm wood selection that can help add a lot of character to your kitchen? Do you have Oak trim and doors throughout your interior but don’t want to go “Oak Overboard” with an entire kitchen to match?  Have you considered Hickory as a wood species? koch hickory sienna

This Hickory kitchen is in the Koch finish “Sienna” which is a light-medium finish option. The perfect compliment to Oak, Hickory is a wonderful option that can look right at home with other open-grained wood species. According to the American Hardwood Information Center, Hickory is ranked extremely high for hardness (harder than both White and Red Oak).  The rich woodgrain of this Hickory kitchen is what grabs your attention right away when you enter this remodeled East Moline, IL kitchen. Just look at the variation from panel to panel!kitchen remodel East Moline

This kitchen began much darker and more crowded. The original Maple cabinetry included a peninsula that divided the kitchen from the nearby dining area. Soffits were built above this original cabinetry to spread the gap between the ceiling and the cabinetry.kitchenbefore

base_angled_endFor an updated look, our designer at Village Home Stores first began with an update to the layout. Removing the soffits above and the peninsula area gives the kitchen (and those using it) a much more open feel. Angling the end of the wall and base cabinetry at the end of the sink wall makes for a nice smooth transition into the dining space. Many times you can add these angled cabinets as an extension to your kitchen and gain extra storage space.

Updating the cabinet layout also gave the opportunity to update the kitchen appliances and their configuration. New Stainless Steel appliances by Whirlpool were included from Village Home Stores. Not just the finish was updated, the cooking zone of the kitchen now has a whole new look. The original range was a “drop-in” model. dropin_range

The new range stayed in the same general area but was replaced with a freestanding Stainless Steel model and a microwave hood above. A microwave hood can be such a space-saving solution for kitchens. Replacing the range hood with a microwave hood frees up more countertop space for the new kitchen. kitchen remodel East MolineThe microwave wasn’t the only thing that found a new “home”, with the addition of a 24″ deep pantry cabinet and a deep cabinet above the refrigerator, all of the small appliances now have a place to be stored. Hickory can be ordered as you see here or using a “rustic” or “knotty” selection of materials. We have examples and samples of all of the many options you have in Hickory available from multiple cabinetry lines.formica labrador granite

The countertop selection for this project is also a great choice. Formica’s “Labrador Granite” color is a dark neutral that pairs well with many woods.  These dark countertops also help compliment the Oil-Rubbed Bronze hardware selection for the new kitchen. We didn’t just replace the cabinets, counters and appliances, we also updated a pantry doorway in the space.millwork

This update helps the opposite end of this kitchen to seem more included in the new kitchen design. As we mentioned earlier, Hickory marries perfectly with Oak. This closet door is a fantastic example of that. Shaker-paneled doors (in Oak) have been stained to match the new Hickory kitchen. New flooring was also installed throughout the kitchen and dining area to help the entire space have a new look. luxury vinyl tile by Tarkett

Luxury Vinyl Tile, or “LVT” from our Tarkett line was installed in a 12″ x 12″ size. LVT can be installed grouted or un-grouted. This customer choose the grouted look for their “Summit Slate-Gold” tile.  The kitchen and dining room windows were also replaced during the remodel. This is commonly one of the roadblocks for many homeowners when they start to try and manage their own remodel project. Collecting and coordinating estimates and schedules and having crews arrive in the right order can be stressful. tilt out tray for cabinets

There are always ways to make the most of your space. Be sure to ask your kitchen designer at Village Home Stores to include these options. A tilt-out tray below the sink is a great way to keep sponges and rags out of sight. What else would you prefer to keep out of sight? How about that pile or mail, bills, or other paper items? Including a desk or a drop-zone in your design can be a great way to handle that.hickory cabinets

We do still include desk areas in many kitchen designs. Adding a desk area can be a great way to gain storage and counterspace and help your entire kitchen seem larger. desk in kitchen
