Moline Quad Cities Kitchen Remodel With Wall Removed

This week’s featured project takes us to a home in Moline, IL that was in need of an update to brighten and open up the existing kitchen. We removed soffits, a portion of a wall, dark oak cabinetry, plus dated counters and appliances to create an airy and bright new space. We think you will love the new kitchen design. Take a look at what was selected:

We had recently remodeled a nearby bathroom for this customer that is just around the corner. This Arabescato Carrara Marble subway tile is a material choice that carries over from that bath remodel project into the kitchen. We love the way the natural stone brings a unique mix of grays and even a subtle blue tint to the kitchen space. This blend of bright whites and subtle grays are what allows the light to bounce around this bright kitchen.

With soffits removed, the new cabinetry can stretch all the way to the ceiling in a flat-panel door named “Prairie” by our Koch Classic Cabinetry line. The cabinets have been finished with a White paint. The U-shaped kitchen layout has only had one appliance location change, moving the dishwasher closer to the sink. You can see the original location for the dishwasher was clear across the room (see below).

Not only were we able to move the dishwasher to a more useful location, we were even able to squeeze a lazy susan cabinet in the corner instead of the original “blind corner” cabinet. We just love how bright and clean this new kitchen looks with the materials selected. Flat panel white kitchen cabinetry may sound like a basic choice, but it is truly the best transitional platform you can give yourself for a kitchen or bathroom space. White cabinetry can be styled so many ways and to suit so many tastes. In this home, the white cabinets have an almost art gallery effect on the curated framed artwork and decor items allowing them to pop.

This KitchenAid dishwasher is just part of an entire package of Stainless Steel appliances that are truly built for those who love the cooking process. Recognize this gas range? That may be because it was also the gas range model from our last kitchen featured here on the blog. This 30″ wide front-control gas range includes convection features and 5 burners on top.

We love the new design of KitchenAid’s front-control ranges because they give you the look of a custom, slide-in range but they fit into a standard 30″ wide opening. Yes! That means if you have a standard gas range right now, this KSGG700ESS will slide right into that opening and give you a clean and professional look. But did you notice that microwave hood was a little shorter than normal?

The new low-profile microwave hood launched by KitchenAid is a game-changer! Do you currently have a range hood installed beneath a cabinet and wish you could install a microwave hood there? This is the model for you! Now without modifying the height of that top cabinet, this 10.3″ tall model can be installed allowing you 500 CFMs of ventilation plus a microwave cavity that still fits a full dinner plate and definitely that fully-popped bag of popcorn. What does 500 CFMs look like in power? Take a peek at this example on the right compared to a standard microwave hood:

For those who love the cooking process and tend to make some smoke while working in the kitchen, this is the microwave hood you need! These microwave hoods are a welcome addition to an existing kitchen just in need of a new functional look, but also looks right at home in this new design. This Moline, IL kitchen was remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. What does that mean? That means that the client teamed up with us and our Complete Project Management team to organize every step of the process with them. All kitchen designs with us begin with the same initial consult meeting in-store. From there, our project management clients are given a whole different checklist of events than our DIY clients.

One of the key moments in this Project Management remodel process is the contractor meeting during the estimating process. We arrange a meeting in your home with all of the crews who will be bidding the work. We then discuss what needs to be estimated for the project and from there we can not only present you with a more accurate total project number, we can also spell out all of your work included in an inclusion sheet. In this Quad Cities home we removed a section of a wall dividing the kitchen and dining room spaces (see before and after below).

With that work to be done (plus electrical, tile, carpentry, and plumbing work) we had a full schedule of events to get us to the finish line. That meant we needed to schedule multiple crews for the best use of time and in the right order to get this kitchen done by the Holidays. We did! We know your time is valuable and nobody enjoys living in a home during the remodel process so we try and keep to using reliable and efficient crews who are used to working together and can keep us all on track. If all that sounds overwhelming, don’t worry! Village Home Stores will do all of that schedule work for you.

We also transformed another wall in the kitchen design. We removed a fireplace from the end of the original kitchen and gave that wall a whole new function. Now there is a gorgeous wine sideboard cabinet centered on the space and we have added pantry fronts to match the kitchen cabinet doors.

Each of those tall doors open to deep, shelved storage and a broom/cleaning closet area. We love how this end of the kitchen has now become a part of the kitchen design itself. We included a glass door cabinet at the center of the space and two wine cubby base cabinets for storage and decoration.

Wood countertops can also be ordered from Village Home Stores. This one came from the same shop that built our cabinetry. By using a wood top on a sideboard element like this, your result is a more built-in and furniture look for the section of cabinetry. Have a nearby dining room or home office that could use some cabinetry design? Don’t hesitate to contact Village. We can save you a lot of time shopping for the right piece of furniture and instead build you the perfect one!

On the subject of countertop surfaces, allow is to introduce you to this marble-look engineered quartz surface by Cambria Quartz. This is the Brittanicca design in a standard eased edge. The large-format marble pattern gives you the look and character of a marble surface with the no-hassle and worry-free piece of mind quartz surfaces offer.

A perfect compliment to the marble look Brittanicca quartz counters, the true marble tile selected for the kitchen backsplash is stunning. Arabescato Carrara has subtle variations from tile to tile and it is just enough to bring natural stone character to the space. We also installed our Radiant Collection series of switches and outlets throughout the remodeled kitchen design. White plates and fixtures were a great choice to seamlessly blend in with the overall look. Notice one of our favorite features of this series… no visible screws on the backplates!

Of course we added creative storage solutions anywhere we could for this customer in their cabinetry. Pull-out cabinets, tray dividers, sliding shelves and more. In remodel situations like these, you many times only have a handful of cabinets to work with in a design. You must make the most of that space and our experts are here to help you do that.

With the dividing wall partially removed, we were able to install a new peninsula area to add a lot of cabinet storage and a stunning arched countertop surface with an overhang for casual seating. Moline Remodel: The 9 Cabinet Kitchen Update

Kitchen remodeling Quad Cities. | VillageHomeStores.comThis kitchen remodel in Moline, IL may be small but it is very mighty! A great example of how Village Home Stores can get you your dream kitchen no matter what the size of the space is. Pairing great products with a high-functioning design makes this kitchen a HUGE upgrade in a small space. There is an area in Moline, IL that is full of galley kitchens just like this one (HINT: the neighborhood rhymes with “Clodette”). Space is limited in these homes and Village Home Stores has made the most of the space with this Before & After story.

To put it into perspective of the size of the galley kitchen, above is a photo of the new space with the dishwasher door adjacent. Just enough room to move around the open door if needed.

The main sink wall shown here showcases how gorgeous product selections can make an eye-catching first impression. Cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Prairie” Shaker-style door has been painted in the “Pearl” finish. A Black accent glaze has been applied and helps give a subtle tie into the Black appliances and sink used in the new kitchen. Take a look at a before photo of this same space:

Light Oak cabinetry and gray laminate countertops filled the original kitchen. There is a large window above the kitchen sink that allows lots of fantastic natural light into the kitchen throughout the day. The finishes in this kitchen are beautiful but these homeowners get most excited when they get to use the new space. Below is a birdseye view of the new design from Village Home Stores:

Kitchen remodeling Quad Cities. | VillageHomeStores.com

It is difficult to show this kitchen layout in a single photograph, so seeing this birdseye view should help give an idea of how the two walls of cabinetry are arranged. The refrigerator and range each stayed in the original locations. It is so important to have a functional design when you are working in a small space. This means all doors and drawers need to fully operate. The range and dishwasher are staggered in location so that if both doors need to be accessed they are available.
Whirlpool 18" dishwasher built in. | VillageHomeStores.com

In the original kitchen, a portable dishwasher was located between the refrigerator and range. This gave a small landing space for loading and unloading the refrigerator as well as a prep and landing space for the user at the range. With the redesign of the kitchen came the opportunity to include a built-in dishwasher.
before_dw

A compact built-in dishwasher from Whirlpool® that measures 18″ wide (compared to a 24″ wide standard dishwasher model) has been installed. This tall-tub model in a compact size is perfect for a remodel like this. If in the future a dishwasher is no longer desired, an 18″ cabinet can be replaced in the space. A pull-out trash cabinet or a single door and drawer unit would work well here.

At first glance you may have thought  the countertops in this new kitchen were a natural stone. While they look a lot like a granite, these are actually Formica® laminate tops. The 180fx® series of laminates can really bring an upscale look to any project. The “Lapidus Brown” design selected for this home is a wonderful and versatile choice. With many neutral colors included in the pattern, you can pair it with painted finishes as well as many wood finishes. Be sure to also check out this featured kitchen that included a Marble look laminate.
drop_in_sink

A great way to give the look of a granite countertop is to select an edge profile that won’t show a seam in the laminate. The “Futura” edge style selected for this project wraps the laminate color over and under the front edge of the material. This gives the look of a smooth, polished stone edge. An Elkay “E-Granite” sink in a black finish has been dropped into the new laminate tops. These sinks are extremely durable and give a great look to any project.
sink_in_laminate

Another way to give a granite “fake-out” look to your laminate tops is in the backsplash area. Laminate countertops can be ordered with what is called a “post-form” backsplash built into the top. This gives you a 4″-5″ coved area of laminate where the top meets the wall. By ordering the tops without a backsplash, the tile can be installed directly down to the top. This is a look more commonly seen with a “slab” of granite installed in a kitchen.

An angled end cabinet is installed to face the user at the sink. This gives a space for display and helps keep smaller items off the countertops. With the end cabinet “clipped” or angled, this makes the wall cabinets not “crowd” into the window. Bringing the wall cabinetry all the way up to the ceiling helps these homeowners gain an added storage all around the kitchen. Leaving enough space for a standard-sized crown molding also helps give this kitchen a polished look. Our Koch Classic line offers wall cabinetry in heights between standard sizes to make this look possible. No more narrow, un-reachable (and impossible to dust) area between the cabinets and ceiling!

Nothing shows off a space better than our Diode LED lighting system. The new countertops and glass 3″ x 6″ subway tiles by Interceramic are fully showcased in the new kitchen. Day or night, this lighting system is perfect. Task lighting when needed or dimmed for a nightlight, this LED system is always one of the first things mentioned when we ask a customer to list their favorite part of the new space.

kitchendrawersWith just 9 cabinets to work with, you need to truly get the most functional design possible. Narrow kitchens like this don’t need the added obstacle of having to open doors first, then slide out shelves. Drawer storage can add function to just about any space. Think of a desk you may see in a workspace. Most of the accessible cabinet storage within that desk is found in a drawer. With limited space, you don’t need doors swinging into it. Keep in mind that a small stack of drawers like the one shown to the left here, is typicaly found in a kitchen design no matter what the size is. Have you considered though, a stack of drawers as a large base cabinet?

In the case of this kitchen it isn’t just a large base cabinet…. it is THE ONLY large base cabinet. Why choose drawers then? Let us show you! Take a look at everything that fits within this 39″ cabinet!!!kitchen_moline

Pots and pans storage, small appliances plus a split top section with two top drawers. A drawer for silverware and one for other items. This frees up the smaller stack of drawers opposite it for linens, cooking utensils and pantry item.pantry

Speaking of pantry items, would you believe that in this small kitchen there was space for a tall pantry cabinet? By moving the dishwasher over to the sink wall, there was now some added space next to the refrigerator in the new design. You would be surprised at how much you can fit into a 15″ wide pantry cabinet like this. The slide-out shelves to this tall unit are adjustable to make the cabinet very versatile. The pantry cabinet also acts as a way to give the refrigerator a more built-in look. A 24″ deep wall cabinet above the refrigerator offers even more storage space for small appliances and extra items. wall_cabinets

Whirlpool appliances Quad Cities. | VillageHomeStores.comA 30″ wide gas range from our Whirlpool line is also found on this wall. This range is a standard width and size, but just like this kitchen it packs a large punch when it comes to features. The capacity of the oven measures 5.1 cu. ft. This provides plenty of room to help you manage all of your large cooking tasks. The continuous cast-iron grates cover nearly the whole cooktop surface, giving you the flexibility to easily slide heavy pots and pans to optimal cooking locations. The grates are dishwasher-safe, and their satin finish resists wear and tear. Varied burners below those grates including one 5,000-BTU AccuSimmer® burner. This gives you precise temperature control perfect for melting chocolate or simmering sauces.

tile_installers_molineHaving the gas range tight against this corner in this small layout made it necessary to protect the wall surface next to it.  The glass subway tile was extended out from the backsplash to reach to the very front of the cooktop surface. Now any splatters or spills can be wiped clean from the tile or sealed grout.beforeandafter

Moline Remodel- Great Galley!

Not every remodel we complete involved removing a wall to find space. Remodeled for an updated look with a few slight layout changes, this Moline kitchen now looks great and works even greater for the owners!kitchen_remodel_molinebefore_sink_wallGalley kitchens and even single-wall kitchens are extremely common and we remodel many in the area. When existing location of the kitchen restricts you with how much overall square footage you can use, you must get creative with the design of the new layout. Making the most of what space you have is what we love doing! Take a look at where we began with this galley remodel. A long wall of cabinets on the sink wall offered storage and even a small peninsula on the end allowed some seating and added counter space.

before_oven_wallThe opposite wall housed a wall oven and the refrigerator. An existing doorway to a stairwell blocked the very end of the cabinets from extending any further to match the sink wall. In the before photo you see here this wall of cabinetry ended at the refrigerator. A sun room at the rear of the kitchen and open to the front living room at the other end, the new design couldn’t stretch outside the room…but it can still grow. Here is a photo of the kitchen taken during the remodel process.

kitchen_remodelers_Moline_ILA new pocket door to the sun room has been roughed in and a header above has also been installed. Now that the door will not swing into the kitchen, that back corner of the wall can include two wall ovens.

DoubleOven_Molinecofee_stationDouble ovens by Maytag now can be installed right on the sun room end of the new design. A solution to the old kitchen issue of no landing space for the refrigerator is to include a counter area between the new wall ovens and the new refrigerator. This area is perfect for a coffee station. The new cabinet design no longer ends at the refrigerator. The galley kitchen now has grown to include the existing doorway and include it in the new kitchen.

Kitchen_door_frontA tall face frame and door has been ordered and installed to cover the old stairwell that has now become a built-in pantry. This new look balances the length of the sink wall across from it but doesn’t intrude into the kitchen at all. The pantry front takes up not more space than the original door and the end result actually makes the new kitchen seem larger.

spice_pullout_3inchesThe cooktop stayed in the same location but now has great storage surrounding it including this pull-out spice rack cabinet. 3″ is all you need to have spices within reach and off your wall cabinet shelves. See this cabinet in action over on our YouTube channel here.

moline_remodel_finishesThe finishes in this kitchen are a beautiful upgrade from what was taken out. Koch cabinetry in a Birch wood and “Chestnut” stain with black accent glaze are paired with “Impanema White” granite counters. With only the sink wall and the small area on the opposite wall to consider for backsplash, a tiled look is a wonderful choice. A white subway tile for the main “field” is accented by a strip of mosaic tile that stretches the length of the wall. Adding this line of accent to grab your eye also helps make the new kitchen seem larger than the original.

kitchen_installers_molineA small peninsula was part of the original design and the new kitchen also includes one as well. An angled base cabinet below helps allow even more legroom for two benches and a turned post has been installed to match the cabinetry and support the weight of the granite top.small_kitchen_peninsula

As with many remodel projects we do, the soffits from the original kitchen were taken out and taller cabinetry was installed in their place. Without stretching into the front living room or the back sun room we were able to still add storage space to the new design of this kitchen. For a kitchen this size to include a large french-door refrigerator, a double oven, separate cooktop and a dishwasher  plus more storage is a pretty great task.

Porcelain tileWe also want to mention another surface area of the new kitchen. The floors have been replaced with brand new hardwood in the kitchen. With just a single step down to the sun room and a glass-front pocket door in between, the sun room floor needed to feel like a real part of the new kitchen. Because of the back door traffic, hardwood was not ideal for the sun room but tile would be perfect. A porcelain tile with a look of wood in a very similar color was selected and installed and the choices were perfect. Selecting the right materials and the perfect application is what we help our customers do every day.
