This week’s featured project is located at a new home built in Andalusia, IL by Hazelwood Homes. Kitchen design in the Midwest is trending toward open, airy, and inviting spaces. This layout and selection of materials is a perfect way to showcase a Transitional style with some farmhouse details.
A U-shape layout with a large single-level island. The walls are open and airy with just windows, a wood hood, and floating shelves. The other wall is home to the taller elements. A double-oven cabinet, refrigerator, and pantry area complete the U-shape. But that’s not just a pantry cabinet…
…it’s a walk-through pantry front! This design gives the solid look of a cabinet custom fit to the wall in the kitchen. When the doors open, it reveal a walk-in pantry area that turns back behind the refrigerator space. So when seeing this beautiful open and airy look, don’t worry about the lack of wall cabinet storage. The huge pantry area provides so much shelf space!
What a stunning look! The customer arranged to have rustic wood surround the back of the kitchen island and the floating shelves in the same wood look perfect! We love the pairing of a smooth, solid finish painted cabinet with rustic details. The knotty wood adds character and texture to the space.
There is so much to be said about being able to design a single-level kitchen island without a sink or cooktop in it. Just think of how many times in the last few Holiday weeks that you wished you had a large surface for working on. Cookie decorating, gift-wrapping, and serving food would all be amazing on this large island surface. There is even an overhang for counter-height seating.
Engineered Quartz in the “Carrara Grigio” color gives the look of a marble with the maintenance-free appeal. A classic and durable choice. The floating shelves and clear glass island pendants help keep the kitchen walls feeling open and airy. Another player in this is the custom wood hood above the cooktop.
We can create wood hoods to pair with any kitchen style. From simple and clean-lined looks like this, to ornate and decorative options. We have them all! Plus you can fit the interior of these hood with blower inserts of many types. You can customize your power and exhaust options all concealed within and the look is great!
The cabinets in this kitchen are a great new neutral option from our Koch line of cabinetry. The “Taupe” painted finish has been applied to a paint-grade maple in the Seneca door. The flooring this this kitchen is from our LW Mountain line. It is an Acacia handscraped engineered wood in a “Natural” finish. Ready to get started on your own dream kitchen like this? We had hoped that by the time we shared this “White Drift” painted kitchen that we would have a Winter Wonderland outside our windows to help make it even more charming. No snow yet in Bettendorf Iowa but it doesn’t stop the style in this kitchen from “piling” up! We were thrilled to provide design and materials for this QCBR Parade of Homes entry from Edgebrooke Homes. The kitchen is absolutely gorgeous.
A kitchen can still be bright and light without being solid white! Koch Cabinetry has a new painted finish available named “White Drift” that can be applied to many woods. No matter if that name makes you think of sand dunes or snow, it’s the perfect way to describe the layers of color and character it brings to a design.
Shown here on a Rustic Beech wood and Easton door, the choice of wood species also includes rustic knots and character on the doors and drawers. Lighting trends in kitchen design are moving away from groups of three small pendants and instead replacing that concept with two larger scale fixtures. This provides a big impact of style and scale to a space. The two “Labette” lantern-shaped lights from our SeaGull line are actually considered foyer lights. Here above the kitchen island, the size and style looks perfect!
A large single-level island is located at the center of the design. Here you find the kitchen sink undermounted to quartz counters. A single drill faucet with pullout spray arm keeps the counter from needing multiple holes drilled into it. The only other thing atop the island is a garbage disposal button (shown on right of faucet).
Cambria Quartz in the “Berwyn” design is the perfect pairing with the wood finish. Not every kitchen requires a high contrast of material selections. Here the subtle tone-on-tone approach keeps the space feeling open and bright. The refrigerator wall of the kitchen design is balanced in scale by a tall pantry cabinet on the left side.
But that’s not just a pantry cabinet, it’s a hidden walk-in pantry. Tall pantry fronts can be ordered to match your kitchen cabinets and can turn any available space into hidden storage potential. In new homes it can be easier to plan on having the pantry space available but don’t forget about remodel projects too! Consider current closets or desk areas that may make great pantry areas. Your designer at Village Home Stores can help.
We love any opportunity to include pantry fronts like this in designs. We do show an example of this concept in our Geneseo showroom so stop by to see it! Press play below to see this pantry front cabinet section in Betendorf, IA in action:
That same wall with the pantry and refrigerator also includes a stylish microwave drawer. This kitchen has been fit with an appliance package from our Viking Range line. The microwave shown is a 24″ wide undercounter model that gives a sleek built-in look next to the 36″ wide counter-depth Viking refrigerator. One of the many reasons we love carrying the Viking line is that it is a professional-level appliances product that you can build an ENTIRE kitchen appliance package with including the refrigerator. This is a huge advantage instead of the mix-and-match approach many other high-end brands require.
On the other wall of the kitchen is the cooking center of the design. Two large pots and pans drawer bases flank a 36″ wide 6-burner gas range also from Viking Range. Above the range is a decorative wood hood fit with a Broan built-in PowerPack hood insert (see below for view in).
The 36″ gas range selected for this kitchen is full of exceptional features. Some of our favorites include six sealed burners above and a GourmetGlo™ infared broiler within. This unit is even available in many unique colors for a fun impact in your design! We are also so proud to mention that Viking is another one of our Appliance lines that is manufactured in the United States.
The Quad Cities Region continues to be a wonderful area to build a new home. We are so proud to partner with so many of the talented builders in our area. Don’t forget that New Construction customers are all eligible to our lighting bundle program. As you purchase from multiple departments of our store, you can earn FREE lighting for your home. Learn more about this bundle program in this previous article we posted describing the program. We provided most of the materials throughout this parade home for Edgebrooke Homes. Including the doors and hinges for this built-in area just around the corner from the kitchen.

This Bettendorf, Iowa kitchen has been completely transformed from a medium oak cabinet with laminate tops…
…to a rich look of dark gray stained cherry with sparkling tile and counters! A brand new kitchen layout has been planned to now fit a long, unique island. DuraSupreme’s flat-panel “Highland” door is in a cherry wood and the rich “Peppercorn” stain allows the woodgrain to peek through. The new cabinets stretch all the way to the ceiling with a subtle crown molding. A beveled undercabinet molding completes the look beneath the wall cabinets.
Before we tour it, we should mention that this kitchen remodel in Bettendorf was finished using the Complete Project Management Program at Village Home Stores. This means that a team of experts worked together from designing, through the estimating phase and on into the scheduling and project management process. Our proven process is a system we will walk you through beginning from your very first phonecall or showroom visit.
After the design phase is complete, all parties involved including the subcontractors we are hiring for your project will meet at your home before any work begins to clear up any questions they have. If you have questions about this process we have answers! Do call us anytime to chat about what our Project Management Program would mean for your own home projects. (309) 944-1344. Let’s take a tour of this week’s featured project beginning with some of the beautiful new materials selected for the kitchen.
A striking compliment to the Peppercorn stain on the cabinetry, is a suite of appliances in KitchenAid®’s new Black Stainless Steel finish. The first in the industry to introduce this true stainless finish. The new kitchen plan removes the original peninsula and now extends the cabinetry all the way down the wall to make space for a tall cabinet fit with a combination wall oven and microwave.
Convection features in the oven AND microwave allow this model to function as a double oven when needed. Wall ovens are fantastic for allowing you a view into the oven without bending over. When items need attention, use the SatinGlide™ Roll-Out Extension Rack for easy access. Across the kitchen is a section of tall pantry cabinets surrounding a 5- door Black Stainless Steel refrigerator.
This French Door model includes a 3-tier freezer drawer plus two refrigerated drawers. This is a full-depth model refrigerator. Read more about the differences between full/standard depth and counter depth refrigerator in this recent blog post. With the original peninsula design out, there is now room for a kitchen island. Our designer at Village Home Stores created an island design with plenty of storage and even seating in this kitchen.
A rectangle island top is extended into a rounded seating area supported by a cabinetry post beneath. The post supports the counter and allows 4-5 barstools to pull up for a comfortable casual dining space. Cambria® Quartz in the “Galloway” design ads sparkle and drama to the kitchen design. The warm grays and soft whites in this quartz allow it to be a great choice for many kitchen and bath projects.
The island support post serves double-duty as a hidden storage area. Why build an empty box of panels and trim if it can be functional too?! Speaking of creative storage, this kitchen is packed with it! When you open up your Tupperware cabinet at home are you fearful of an avalanche of lids every time? Then you need this Rev-A-Shelf® insert in your life!
This insert pulls out to access slotted spaces perfect for sorting lids and containers. Press play below to see this incredible storage solution sure to make the very top of every client’s kitchen wish list.
Another great hidden storage solution is located to the right of the gas cooktop area in the kitchen. This pullout utensil cabinet keeps any busy kitchen organized and has everything within reach! It can even remain open with the user is working at the cooktop station.
Each of the metal inserts can be removed for loading, unloading, and cleaning. A special knife storage area is included. This universal knife storage area has movable flex rods that adjust to hold whatever size knives slide into it.
Press play below to see this unique storage cabinet open up to reveal many organized zones and a knife block.
Have you ever seen a beautiful new tile backsplash that immediately looks crowded and busy because of all the outlets and switches that interrupt it? Introducing the adorne® undercabinet system by legrand®. Plenty of power, light, and innovative options that are hidden out of sight underneath your wall cabinetry.
This collection can be completely customized for your lifestyle and your layout. Wish you had an outlet in a different location? No problem! This system is modular so you can move outlets and even add accessories like tablet cradles and bluetooth speakers. Like this look? Check out this other recent kitchen remodel we completed that also includes the adorn® system.
The tracks are installed at the seam where your kitchen wall meets the back of your wall cabinetry. This keeps it nearly hidden from plain sight when viewed within the kitchen. With many options and accessories available, the best way to get all of your questions answered about this product is to visit our award-winning showroom at 105 S State Street in Geneseo, IL and see it installed!
With the new kitchen installed came the opportunity to also put in a matching custom bench seat. A custom cushion could be made for the bench seat but this customer loves the look of the woodgrain so much they have left it uncovered. On the subject of woodgrain, note the gorgeous new flooring in this kitchen. It is actually not hardwood but instead a Luxury Vinyl Plank from our Adura line. The series is named “Ashford Walnut” and the color is “Foxwood”.
A long hinge allows for the storage access door to be opened and left open without slamming shut. Think of all of the small and unusual spaces in your own home that could be potential storage areas. Don’t hesitate to ask about your options with Village Home Stores to help make the most of these spaces.
Another small space that received a storage upgrade was the corner of the kitchen shown below. Added storage and a small landing space for setting down items. This angled base cabinet can be used in a number of ways in a kitchen design. Here it stands alone as a wonderful storage niche.

We have the opportunity to design so many unique kitchen spaces throughout the Quad Cities Region. Each and every design is unique from the next and the materials selected are just as unique and each client and home. It seems like we have shared a LOT of painted white kitchens lately on the blog but rest assured that isn’t all that we do! This Geneseo, IL kitchen from Hazelwood Homes is a wonderful example:
There is truly nothing more inviting than a warm and cozy woodgrain kitchen. Rich, wood cabinetry is paired with warm lighting and materials throughout. The look is tailored and high-end but the design and setting is so inviting. Koch Classic Cabinetry in the Westbrook doorstyle and Birch“Mocha” stain has been accented with “Black” highlights. The cabinets stretch all the way to the ceiling and the height of the wall cabinets allow for a double panel door design (see below).
Beautiful and classic subway tile is installed as the kitchen backsplash throughout and even extends to surround the kitchen window and above. One of our unique Transitions blindsis installed in the window. An arched valance detail above the kitchen sink is repeated in the custom wood hood above the cooktop.
A matching wood hood can be ordered to be placed within your kitchen design from Village Home Stores. The same raised center panels from the doors are used as a detail in hood and sink valances. A hood blower/insert can be concealed within these wood hood cabinets. These inserts can be ordered in a number of configurations and powers. That way you can customize the look AND function of your ventilation to fit your needs.
A 36″ wide 5-burner gas cooktop from KitchenAid® offers a versitile cooktop layout including a range from a high heat of 20K BTUs to a simmer of just 6k BTUs. Full width cast iron grates make it easy to slide from burner to burner. The CookShield finish helps to protect the cooktop from high-temperature cooking stains.
But what about small appliances? How does this kitchen not seem so cluttered? The coffeepot and toaster are hidden behind the door of a corner appliance garage cabinet. This new style of hinged door appliance garage is a welcome update from the accordion door styles of the past. Another wonderful storage solution hidden from sight is this hidden walk-in pantry:
We can order walk-through pantry door fronts to match your kitchen as well! These double doors open to reveal a huge walk-in pantry behind the wall oven area. Press play below to see the tall door open to reveal the pantry entrance.
A double wall oven by KitchenAid® is paired with an over-the-counter microwave model from Sharp®. Over-the-counter microwaves allow for you to keep a decorative hood element to your design but eliminate the need to set a microwave oven on the countertop. This model from Sharp blends well with our other appliance brands for a seamless package look.
The innovative new 5-door refrigerator models by KitchenAid® are stylish and packed with amazing features. The KitchenAid® brand was the first in the industry to introduce a 5-door model. The two small drawers in the center of the unit are refrigeration. The left drawer includes 5 preset temperatures: meat/fish, drinks, greens/herbs, deli/cheese, and even a thaw/marinate setting. The right drawer is ideal for produce storage with a built-in produce preserving feature.
This kitchen is a two-toned design that includes a contrasting finish on the batwing-shaped kitchen island. The same Koch Westbrook doorstyle from the kitchen perimeter is painted White with am “Umber” highlight on the door and drawer front details. Cambria Quartz in the “Berwyn” design completes the look in the stylish beveled edge profile.
The island ends and back has been fit with custom doors and furniture baseboard molding for finished look. An island light from our Artcraft line hangs above the center of the kitchen island. Of course no complete kitchen can be showcased this well without our favorite secret weapon… our Diode LED undercabinet lighting. This space wouldn’t look as warm and inviting without it.

The kitchen in any home can be the busiest room in the house. That is why we think it is so important to make it a space that suggests comfort as well as function. This Geneseo, IL kitchen invites you right in even by just viewing the photos. A warm and inviting selection of woods and other materials we know you will love.
Koch Classic cabinetry in the “Seneca” doorstyle and Birch “Briarwood” stain is a rich, medium toned wood that warms up the overall look. A black accent glaze has been applied to the cabinets to help enhance the edges of the doors and drawers as well as the details on moldings and finished ends. That black accent color is repeated in the dining table and chairs.
A tall section of cabinetry surrounds the refrigerator in this kitchen design. A wide pantry cabinet opens to reveal adjustable rollout shelving inside. At 24″ deep, this cabinet can store a lot of dry goods directly next to the freshfood storage in the refrigerator.
A small landing space of countertop allows a space for loading and unloading pantry items and a wonderful location apart from the food prep areas for daily mail and charging devices. Applied doors on the exposed ends of cabinetry give a polished off and complete look to the kitchen design.
On the opposite side of the refrigerator is another tall cabinet. This helps to “cap” off the refrigerator and give a more built-in and customized look overall. Because of the high-traffic location right by the back doorway, an angled tall cabinet was used. This keeps the cabinet from projecting too far into the kitchen but still allows for a lot of storage within.
Across from the refrigerator is the sink area of the kitchen. A double-well farm sink is the center of all attention beneath the kitchen window. A single-lever control kitchen faucet with pullout sprayer is installed for the sink and a reverse osmosis water system to the right of that. This farmsink is unique in that it includes a popular low-divider feature we have been seeing a lot of in composite undermounted sink options over the past few years. A lowered center divider allows for the sink to be filled when needed to a 1/3-1/2 fill. By having a lowered center divider, this keeps the sink overall area available for washing large items without making a watery mess on the nearby countertops.
This farmhouse sink is undermounted to a gorgeous quartz top from Cambria® Quartz. The “Harlech” design is a beautiful blend of neutral earth-tones with a sparkling gray veining throughout. This gives the look of a natural stone with all of the benefits of quartz. The tops truly dazzle and are showcased by our Diode LED low-voltage lighting installed underneath the wall cabinetry.
This system of lighting is a definite must-have item when building or remodeling. There is no better way to showcase your new space than to add this system. It washes your countertop and backsplash area with consistent light that can even be dimmed for an ambient look. Yes it helps your kitchen look amazing but it is extremely functional as well! Task lighting is a key element in any functional kitchen design.
This space is warm and inviting. The quartz tops in this kitchen truly add a unique look and a natural element to the space. We can’t say enough about how happy our customers are that choose to invest in Cambria®. The selections of designs are truly top-notch and best of all, it is maintenance free once installed! This quartz product is manufactured in the US and represents both classic and on-trend options. Find out more about Cambria® in this recent blog post.
The adorne series of switches and outlets from our legrand line is a stylish choice for the new kitchen. Bright white basic outlets would stand out against the new tile. Instead, these unique switches add function and style to the space. The color of the plates is named “Ashton Tan”. A 1’x2″ tile named “Crema Cappuccino” from Epic Stone has been installed throughout the new kitchen space. It is a wonderful compliment to the lighter colors found in the quartz design. Slight variations from tile to tile don’t compete with the business of the Harlech design.
Not every kitchen can accommodate an island in the given space. Sometimes including a peninsula is still the best layout choice to offer added base cabinet storage and counter surface. The back and exposed end of a kitchen peninsula still needs to be finished. This kitchen has been ordered with a back panel custom fit for the length of the peninsula back. The panel mimics the raised center panel design of the kitchen cabinet doors. The “end” of the peninsula is a 12″ deep cabinet with double doors for added storage.
The side of that “end” cabinet has been treated with an applied door to look like a cabinet when viewing from the interior of the kitchen layout. A stainless steel dishwasher from KitchenAid® is quiet at just 43 decibels. It includes an express wash option and adjustable upper and lower rack layouts. Love this kitchen? We are so blessed to be able to become a part of the building process for our customers. Anything we can do to make that process more easy and of course exciting is such a great part of our work. This new home built in Coal Valley, IL by Hazelwood Homes is one of our favorite recently completely projects. This busy family wanted a stylish space but one that can be enjoyed and lived in as well.
An “open concept” layout is certainly the direction most new home plans are going. This home includes a great room that opens up into a dining space and then the kitchen. Now casual family moments and even more formal meals can all be shared within this family-friendly space. Having the kitchen within reach of the play areas and main social spaces of a home can be so helpful for families with younger children. Even though we are calling this kitchen “family friendly” we still believe it still could grace the cover of a glossy magazine don’t you?
Flat-panel, “Ridgegate” cabinets in a “White” paint are a classic choice from our Koch line. Modern Farmhouse details like Hickory hand-scraped wood floors and a farm sink help to nudge this Transitional style kitchen into the Farmhouse Transitional style category. Wall cabinets stretch just shy of the ceilings leaving enough room for a stacked crown molding detail. So much storage throughout plus a glass-door corner pantry area (shown below with someone sneaking a snack).
“Fossil Grey” quartz counters mimic an almost cement slab look on the perimeter of the kitchen and Cambria® Quartz “Brittanicca” graces the center of the kitchen on the island. This beautiful look of natural stone suggests marble with the no-maintenance appeal of Cambria®! This non-porous, durable product is a fantastic choice for counters in this busy family hub!
With the wall cabinets so tall, a stacked look to the doors was desired to avoid long, exaggerated doors to open and close. Many kitchens with this look include floating shelves. The look can be great, but difficult to keep clean. You also become limited to weight the floating shelves may hold. Consider glass-front cabinets as an option to still give an open look. One section of this kitchen design has been arranged as a built-in hutch area (see above).
The main kitchen perimeter includes just glass inserts in the top section for a “clerestory” effect. This hutch area section includes glass door inserts entirely. The finished look is clean and stylish. We love how the dishes and glassware are able to be displayed but kept from dust. The kitchen backsplash adds to the white-on-white space a new texture and design detail. An “Arabesque” shape tile in a glossy “Coronado” color helps add curvy intertwining lines to soften the look of the kitchen. Of course we can never mention a stunning backsplash without also reminding you it is being washed with light by our Diode undercabinet lighting system. There is no better way to showcase your new kitchen investments than with this low-voltage lighting.
The refrigerator for this kitchen is located right at the entrance from the Dining area. A KitchenAid® 20 cu. ft. counter-depth model has a deep cabinet above and a refrigerator end panel on the right side of the unit for a built in look. A “family-friendly” kitchen without water in the door?!? Well, this French Door unit may be shallower to allow maximum walkway throughout the kitchen…but it does still have water and ice!
The filtered water is just inside of the door and an icemaker is located down in the freezer drawer. Including the icemaker and ice storage down below frees up more space in the fresh food storage area that can become quickly crowded in a counter-depth model. Cooking and baking just got a lot more stylish and easier for this family as well!
A 48″ wide commercial-style KitchenAid® gas range is the focal point of the entire kitchen. With two ovens and 6 burners this duel fuel range can prepare a meal for the smallest or largest of crowds! The ovens include Convection baking, roasting, and broiling settings plus the KitchenAid® EasyConvect™ takes the intimidation and guesswork out of convection.
An easy-to-clean electric chrome griddle is also a part of this 48″ wide unit. What an all-star appliance choice! Village Home Stores isn’t just Cabinetry and Counters. We also offer Appliance Sales and Service, Lighting, Flooring, and Blinds and Shades. Did you know that when you are building a home you can purchase the products you need from all departments of our store and end up receiving credit for free lighting because of it!? We offer a Local Low Price Guarantee plus a Lighting Bundle Program that can save you a significant amount of money!
We love the lighting that was selected throughout this entire home. The kitchen lighting is so perfectly paired with the style of the space. It keeps the space feeling light and bright and doesn’t distract from the other focal areas of the kitchen. Above the farmhouse style kitchen sink is a white and chrome pendant light by Golden Lighting.
Working with an expert lighting staff when building makes the designing and selection process easier on you. Don’t spend months and months driving all around the area to handfuls of specialty shops. Come to the experts at Village Home Stores. Above the kitchen island hang two “Tabby” glass mini pendants from our Feiss line.
We love how the clear glass keeps the space feeling bright and open. The kitchen island includes a microwave drawer from Sharp®. This microwave option is wonderful for busy families. Easy to reach and plenty of counter space above it, microwave drawers can be a wonderful option for your kitchen design. The microwave controls for this unit can be found on the tilt-out panel on the top frame of the unit. This sleek new design allows for the Sharp® unit to pair well with many appliance styles and brands.

“Build your dream home with your now budget” that’s the phrase that greets you on the new Aspen Homes LLC Website. With the Aspen team and your new home team here at Village Home Stores that is absolutely possible! Take a look around this Bettendorf, IA kitchen that was part of the QCBR Spring Parade of Homes this year. Painted white cabinets on the perimeter and a stained gray kitchen island to anchor the space. This L-shaped kitchen design sits in a great room layout that or open, bright and stylish. The “Legacy” door from our Koch Classic line in their painted “White” finish paired with a Cherry wood stained “Stone” in the same door. “Calcutta Gold” Engineered Quartz tops and a Whirlpool® Stainless Steel appliance suite complete the look.
The new look of the Whirlpool® slide-in ranges is amazing! Now referred to as “front-control” ranges, these gas and electric units have no back control panel raising up to cover the backsplash area. This new design allows the full-access of sight for a backsplash and can be installed in any traditional 30″ wide range opening. The hood wall absolutely becomes the focal point of the kitchen design. Symmetrical in layout and complimented with the island and lighting placement just in front of it. The pendants selected for this kitchen offer style and function but also don’t block the view of that focal wall.
Two lantern-style lights from our Kichler line hang above the kitchen island. Our New Construction lighting expert works closely with you, the Aspen team, and your kitchen designer here at Village Home Stores to determine the best style, scale, and placement for your kitchen island lighting.
The lantern shape is a traditional choice for a foyer light in a home. Using it here helps bridge the gap between Transitional and New-Traditional. We love the look! A wall of cabinetry near the home office includes the Whirlpool® counter-depth french door Refrigerator and a Sharp® microwave drawer. The counter-depth feature on this refrigerator helps to keep the traffic from the back entry of the home clear and open in the design.
A white farmsink is a perfect contrast to stand out in the single-level kitchen island. Drawer storage, a dishwasher, and a pull-out wastebasket are all included in the island design. A black accent glaze has been added to the Cherry “Stone” stain to help highlight the door details on the island.
The sides and back of the island has been treated with a smooth panel in the same Cherry “Stone” stain. Trim has been added to divide up the space into three sections. We have seen a larger trend of single-level islands like these to include barstools that are backless. While this style may not be comfortable for all, the look is more open and less crowded.
Open Concepts in the way of a Great Room design are truly the desired layout for new homes in the Quad Cities area. For busy families, young professionals who like to entertain, or retirees looking to downsize, everyone is wanting a more open living space. With beautiful views of the Midwest countryside out these windows, who wouldn’t want to see that from every room possible.
Great Rooms can be very versatile spaces. As you can see, there is plenty of space for seating in the great room. 4 barstools fit comfortably at the island and a dining table is nearby for a more formal option. Adjacent to the kitchen is a dining area. A 6-light fixture named “Pearson” from our Capital line has a sleek modern profile with a nod to a traditional style fixture.

Many of the homes in the Quad Cities region include a layout commonly referred to as a “Galley Kitchen”. This just means that two parallel sections of cabinets and counters make up the kitchen design. When space is limited, a Galley kitchen layout may be the best solution.
Soffits were removed from the original space and a section of the original wall was removed to create a more open design into the adjacent living room area. Our team including a cabinet designer, electricians, plumbers, carpenters and our project managers worked with these Bettendorf customers to create a more functional kitchen layout while updating the look of the space. New Luxury Vinyl Plank floors from Mannington have been installed in the “Seaport” series and “Surf” color.
In a Galley kitchen layout, it is best to consider maximizing the aisle space between the counters and offering the best storage solutions for the kitchen. Keeping the center aisle space as open as possible helps allow a user to be at an appliance or the kitchen sink and still allow someone to pass behind them. Many times our customers request a large stack of drawers for pots and pans storage in place of a set of doors with slide-out shelves behind them.
This makes access to items easier when you are working in the kitchen. The drawer guides for this type of storage are undermounted and installed to accommodate the weight of pots and pans. This kitchen includes a half-wall that has a bar-height countertop that overhangs into the living room. Perfect for adding stools for dining and even leaning against when entertaining. The quartz in this kitchen is from Caesarstone in the “Symphony Grey” design and standard eased edge profile.
The refrigerator used to be located down near the doorway into the kitchen. This made the room seem crowded right upon entering it. A new counter-depth refrigerator is located now closer to the “end” of the kitchen. A “counter-depth” refrigerator just means that the entire unit is shallower than a standard one. A standard refrigerator can extend many inches into the kitchen walkway, this unit sits back with the cabinetry allowing maximum traffic flow. In a Galley layout, that space is valuable! This French Door unit from Whirlpool® is 20 cu. ft. and even includes an external ice/water dispenser.
Including a sit-down desk in a kitchen layout has become a thing of the past. No body wants to miss out on space for storage where a desk seating area may have been. Instead, many who work in the kitchen choose to do so at an island or a bar-height top like the one in this layout. But what about the piles? Every kitchen countertop no matter how large the family ends up with the piles! This kitchen design includes a mail organizer cabinet. A mail organizer is a modification that can be made to a wall cabinet to give a place to sort and store mail, keys, calendars, tablets, coupons, etc. Many times we are even installing an outlet in these cabinets to create a charging station.
Speaking of power, all of the new switches and outlets in the kitchen have been replaced with the Adorne series by legrand. This stylish system is available in a variety of custom options and finishes. Stop in our store today to learn more and see this system in person! The tiled backsplash in this kitchen is a wonderful example of finding a tile that ties all the other finishes together perfectly. The tile is from our Jeffrey Court line in the “Pietra Opus” series and “Winward Plains” color.
Cabinetry for this kitchen design is from our Koch Classic line in the “Savannah” door. A hickory wood has been stained in the warm gray “Stone” finish. The cabinet finish is truly stunning in person! Hickory is the perfect wood to showcase this “Stone” stain. The natural hickory woodgrain is highlighted by the stain and in this home filled with oak trim, it is a perfect compliment. The variation of the wood from panel to panel and even the rails and stiles of the doors is noticeable and beautiful.
The hardware for this kitchen is another bullseye selection! The “Merrick” series from Jeffrey Alexander is sleek and stylish. It compliments the handle styles of the Whirlpool® appliances but in a new finish. The burnished pewter finish has a hint of stainless but blends into the wood finish perfectly. Helping you create a complete design all the way down to that hardware selection, that is our goal at Village Home Stores. Village can provide you with an expert design and quality materials for your project. If needed, we can also take the project over completely for you. This Spring we have the great pleasure to have our designs and products included in a number of homes in the Quad Cities Builders & Remodelers Association Spring Parade of Homes. We share a lot of remodel stories here on the blog but we also put our designs and product into new construction homes. We wanted to share some tours of these homes to give you a look at what “New Construction” looks like in the Quad Cities region. This home built by Heartland Builders is in Bettendorf, Iowa. Heartland worked with us and purchased all cabinetry, counters, appliances, and lighting for this home from our store. Let’s begin a tour with the stunning kitchen.
A clean and classic look! White painted cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the “Ridgegate” doorstyle is paired with elongated subway tile, quartz countertops, and a KitchenAid® appliance package. A U-shaped layout with a centered island creates an open and functional space for multiple users and can accommodate many guests within the great room. The focal wall in the design is the back wall that is home to a 48″ chimney-style hood and a 48″ wide, dual fuel 6-burner range with griddle by KitchenAid® .
This commercial-style range offers features that any home chef can love along with easy-to-use basics. Convection features may sound intimidating to navigate but this model includes EasyConvect™ Conversion to help you adjust times and temperatures. 6-burners on the cooktop plus a chrome griddle that is easy to clean. Oven capacity is one of the best parts of including a commercial style range in your design.

The combined left and right ovens add up to 6.3 cu. ft. of space! With convection features you can use all of those racks at once if needed and still get consistent results! One “leg” of the U-shape includes a center glass-door cabinet and a long countertop space. This gives a built-in hutch look, and offers a great location to be used as a sideboard to serve food from or set up a beverage station.
The other “leg” of the kitchen is where the tall built-in section of appliances are. A tall, 24″ deep cabinet offers lots of storage and a center section is fit with a convection microwave oven. A stainless steel trim kit frames in this microwave for a built-in look. KitchenAid®’s built-in 42″ wide French Door refrigerator.
The built-in unit installs back with the cabinetry face frame surrounding it. This offers a much more customized a sleek look compared to a standard-depth model that would project into the space by a handful of added inches.
A center kitchen island includes lots of added storage and a pull-out wastebasket cabinets. Having your wastebaskets centrally-located and right on a corner make it so much easy for guests to find them or get direction to them. A dishwasher is also found in the island alongside a Stainless Steel farmhouse sink.
Quartz countertops in Cambria’s “Bellingham” design are a stunning selection. The blend of neutral colors and gray veining add to the classic look of this kitchen. Once installed, Cambria is maintenance free and a wonderful choice for this entire kitchen. A single handle kitchen faucet has been installed and a garbage disposal button is located right above the sink in the countertop. Above this kitchen island hang two pendants by ELK lighting. These clear glass lights help keep the space seem airy and open. Our lighting experts will work with you and your kitchen designer to select the perfect look, size, and scale of lighting to hang above your kitchen island.
There are so many gorgeous lights selected throughout this home. Our new construction lighting expert will sit down with you and your contractor to help determine what lighting is needed and how you can make the most of your lighting budget. We love the light fixture (show below) that hangs in the formal Dining Room of this home. This 8-light pendant is by Kichler.

The same “Ridgegate” door from the kitchen has been painted in Koch’s “Taupe” paint. An “Ebony” accent glaze helps showcase the edges and details of the doors and drawers. Vanity cabinetry and a tall linen cabinet have been installed for a beautiful look with wall-to-wall mirror above the sink area. Sconces from our Kichler line are mounted directly through the mirror. Quartz counters in the “Mont Clair White” design are a beautiful blend of the cabinetry and tile colors in the bathroom. This entire home was furnished and staged by Calla located in Davenport, IA.
The lower level of this home includes a wet bar area also designed by Village. Koch’s “Vicksburg” door in a Rustic Beech wood and “Mocha” stain give a rich, warm look to the space.
A back sink wall of cabinetry including a side-by-side refrigerator faces a two-level bar counter. “Black Pearl” granite tops in the brushed finish give a leathered look to the bar area. See the full album of photos from this project over on our award-winning Houzz page here. There you will see the other lights, bathrooms, and more kitchen and bar images.

Village Home Stores is known for beautiful remodels but did you know that we also work with many area builders to provide expert design and material selection for their homes? This stunning kitchen in a Wood Builder Ltd. home is a fantastic example. Modern Farmhouse style in the new Spencer Hollow in Bettendorf, IA. Let’s take a look around this beautiful new space.
Painted cabinets from our Koch Express line are installed throughout the perimeter of the kitchen. The Windsor doorstyle in a birch wood has been painted with a soft, light-gray color named “Oyster” by Koch. The cabinetry includes soft-close drawers and classic, slab drawer fronts. A suite of Stainless Steel appliances from our Whirlpool® line complete the look with style and function. This 30″ wide front-control gas range is packed with great features including the innovative new Frozen Bake™ feature by Whirlpool®.
What does Frozen Bake™ mean? It means a meal is as simple as loading in select frozen items like pizza or a lasagna and beginning the baking process without preheating. Skip preheating alltogether and let this range modify cook times and temperatures for you. As a compliment to the soft painted “Oyster” finish on the perimeter, a stain has been applied to the kitchen island. The Lexington doorstyle from our Koch Classic line has been installed in a birch wood with the “Stone” stain applied.
This medium gray tone allows the natural wood grain of the cabinets come through but doesn’t conflict with the other wood tones in the space. The wood flooring and furnishing in the great room all pair well with the gray stain. The best ways to “dress up” an island design without adding legs or decorative details is to just be certain that the exposed ends look great. A smooth, flat panel or finished end look alright on an island but adding elements like applied doors (shown above) help to customize and elevate the design. Furniture baseboard completes the look.
The counters in this kitchen are from our Klondike quartz line. The neutral faux-marble look is named “Calacatta Gold” in the standard “Eased” edge. Many times when we have a two-toned cabinet layout, the island is a second color of counter material. Here using the same quartz throughout is a clean and classic look. The island top overhangs on two sides to offer seating for three guests.
A centrally-located kitchen island can be a wonderful location for a microwave drawer. Access to the microwave is available to any user without being in the way of any other prep or cooking. In this kitchen layout a user can be at the main cooktop/range area and someone else can still easily access the microwave or refrigerator. This microwave drawer model from our Sharp® line measures 24″ wide and has been installed in a cabinet including a storage drawer below. You can see in the background of the above image, that a sliding barn door is located in the kitchen. This door installed by Wood Builder Ltd. opens to access a pantry area. There is also a secondary pantry located in the kitchen design. It is a tall cabinet to the left of the refrigerator.
Next to the tall pantry is a 21 cu. ft. side-by-side refrigerator by Whirlpool®. This counter-depth model is installed back flush with the cabinets and gives a more customized look without much upcharge. It is important to mention also that 21 cu. ft. of storage is a wonderful number for a counter depth model. Freezer storage in a side-by-side refrigerator can already be a bit limited but this counter-depth model includes In-Door-Ice® Storage. This means that the icemaker and bin have been moved to the door to make more usable shelf space available. See the full album of images from this home here on our Houzz page. As we mentioned, this home was built by Wood Builder Ltd. in Spencer Hollow. It includes cabinetry, counters, and appliances from our store.
