The term “Rustic Transitional” is becoming more and more common all across the home interiors industry. This featured project in Cambridge, IL is a wonderful example of of Rustic Transitional materials and style. The story to be told however, is more traditional in nature.

Rustic modern kitchen remodeled by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.comThis home has a rich history with the current residents. Like many of the many homes in rural Henry County, this farmhouse has been in the family for many years. It was the home of the current resident’s grandfather. Years and years of traditions and memories have already taken place here.

beforeThe new kitchen had to be a way to update the space with respect to the past (and the family home) while adding modern elements for new memories to be made. The before photo shows that over time there had been updates and changes made to the kitchen to keep it usable and functional. This time the space was going to need an entirely fresh start.

duringThe original layout created a narrow, cramped space and limited the size and location or a refrigerator. Durian Construction began demo by removing soffits and two walls that chopped up the space. A new 1/2 wall was built to open up the kitchen into the front room and accommodate a new cabinet layout. The existing hardwood was patched with spare flooring to give a seamless look to the two areas without a transition in the floor needed.

Maytag french door refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.comThe new design allows for a more current standard-sized refrigerator to fit the lifestyle of this busy family.  This new suite of appliances by Maytag includes a 4-door refrigerator and a double oven freestanding gas range with microwave hood above.

Stainless Steel appliances bring an updated look to the kitchen but other materials and finishes selected lend a more rustic look. The large kitchen island has been installed in a distressed black painted finish. That finish paired with a single-level design helps the island look more like a large farmhouse table or furniture piece instead of a modern kitchen island.

The square raised-panel doors are a common “Transitional” choice but if you look closer the wood species selected gives the main kitchen a “rustic” touch.

Edison lamp pendant. | VillageHomeStores.comFor this Cambridge, IL kitchen remodel the “Brinley” series from our Kichler line was used. The visible “Edison” style filament in the bulb is such an interesting nod to the past. The suggestion of a bundle of canning jars with this lighting collection makes it a perfect choice for this new farmhouse kitchen already rich with memories and traditions. Our expert lighting staff can help you select the perfect lights for your project. For this project there was no need to find a light that complimented the island fixtures because a single “Brinley” pendant was available and already the perfect choice.

Rustic Selections Reveal Super Solutions (Lynn Center, IL)

This beautiful home in Lynn Center, IL came with spectacular views of Illinois countryside out of every window. The kitchen at first glance looks like a space right out of a magazine but open a few doors and drawers and this kitchen also reveals some amazing storage secrets!Rustic kitchen by Village Home Stores

This rustic finishes in this kitchen add a lot of texture and character to the space but keep the whole room warm and inviting. Full-overlay Rustic Beech cabinets in the “Briarwood finish sit in a great room that connects to the Dining and Living spaces. Full-extension soft-close drawer guides and soft-close hardware on the doors make this kitchen beautiful and functional.

Let’s start a tour of the space by revealing the secret kept behind those tall doors to the left of the refrigerator. A matching walk-through pantry front has been installed and behind them is a hidden pantry space anyone would love!

Hidden pantry in kitchenPlenty of open shelf space for dry goods, paper products and even cleaning supplies. A motion-sensor light has been installed so that the space lights up when the pantry door is opened.

Super Susan corner cabinetThe expected cabinet upgrades like a pull-out wastebasket and large pots and pans drawers are included in this space but there are a few other specialty cabinet worth mentioning. This corner cabinet has been upgraded to a “Super-Susan”. Replacing the center pole susan style with a fixed center shelf and a revolving tray atop it that allows for full use of the space and no opportunity for items to fall off and go missing in the back corner.

Another one of our favorite parts to this design can be found in the area above the refrigerator. Inset doors above can be slide into the cabinet to reveal an area for a flat-screen television.TV Above RefrigeratorBuilt-in oven below counterA built-in wall oven has been installed below the counter with a smooth electric cooktop above. By installing these two built-in appliances in place of a freestanding electric range, a truly custom look is the end result. The oven door sits back flush with the cabinet doors. Whirlpool has recently redesigned their oven doors to include a wider glass “panoramic” window. Did you know that opening the oven to check on items in place of just flipping on the light changes the temperature by around 25 degrees?

Nobody like a coffeepot taking up space on their counter. The Brew Express countertop coffee system installed into this kitchen adds another custom element to this space. This system (available at Village Home Stores) recesses some of the components of the coffeemaker into the wall and leaves just half of the unit exposed. We get excellent feedback on these systems and can arrange for them to be installed for you. Brew Express Built-in Coffeepot

Stemware holders installed below the wall cabinets keep glassware within reach for entertaining and also offer a unique way to display your items without taking up shelf space.

Decorative glass inserts have been added to the corner and ending wall cabinet doors adding an artistic craftsman touch and an area for items to be displayed within. The “Vintage” granite counters in this kitchen are perfect!  Great natural characteristics and just a little but of added sparkle and flair throughout.
