Bettendorf Iowa Craftsman Quartersawn Oak Kitchen Remodel

We love any chance to showcase the work that we have completed here on the blog. Many times it may seem like a lot of our projects have a similar look to each other as you scroll through our portfolio of featured kitchens. Naturally, as styles and trends appear, our projects begin to have similar themes and tones. So anytime we get something different to tour… we jump at the opportunity.  How about a break from painted white kitchens for an Oak one? Quartersawn Oak cabinetry by Dura Supreme paired with a natural Acacia floor, natural stone tile, and engineered quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

Any fan of the Arts & Crafts style or any lover of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work can appreciate the gorgeous clean lines, smooth woodgrains, and natural elements that truly bring the outdoors in. This kitchen has come a long way. The original space had white cabinets, beige laminate counters, and ceramic tile flooring. Take a look at this before photo:

And now look at this warm and inviting Craftsman kitchen. Craftsman style is all about clean lines, attention to function, and heirloom-quality material choices. This style also reflects a love of the natural, creating a connection between a space and its surroundings. Bringing the outdoors in with natural materials in this kitchen is a celebration of that important Craftsman style element. But what could be “different” about an Oak kitchen? Well for starters… this isn’t a standard Oak kitchen.

Many furniture pieces and built-in units in this Craftsman school of style include an Oak wood rich in smooth, patterned grain. However, the woodgrain patterns on these cabinets are a different variety than most expect from Oak. This is because instead of a standard cut Oak, select “quartersawn” Oak materials are used to build the visible elements. Notice the bottom rail of the door in the photo below:

That unique marbled woodgrain detail is a result of a quartersawn method of collecting raw materials. How this is achieved will be better explain in an upcoming episode of the Village Home Show that also includes a full video tour of this kitchen. The quartersawn Oak cabinetry is from our Dura Supreme line. The door is named “Hudson” and the wood has been stained with a “Butternut” stain.

The top section of some of the wall cabinet doors have been prepared for glass with a mullion design. A frosted glass has been inserted for a great look that also conceals what is within it. This kitchen design creates a large U-shape and even wraps around one of the end corners to create a small wine bar area. An X-shaped wine cubbie cabinet is an updated approach to wine storage and this added section of countertop will be great for serving when entertaining.

Of course this finished kitchen would be nowhere near as warm and inviting without our Diode LED undercabinet lighting installed. It is amazing how even during the daytime this lighting can take a kitchen to a whole new level! In this kitchen we were sure to wrap the lighting all the way around the corner into this serving area.

A great way to “bring the outdoors in” but still keep a design feeling contained and clean is with your material choices. This kitchen includes a backsplash of pencil-thin Pietra Opus Canyon Quartz tiles. These tiles add a texture and assortment of colors that add earthtones to the space. Bettendorf Iowa Quartersawn Oak kitchen with cabinetry by Dura Supreme paired with Pietra Opus Canyon Quartz tile. Above the cooktop area is a section of accent tile. This tile is from the Crossroads Crushed Mood Glass series in the “Karma” colorway. These 1″ x 2″ tiles pull from the same earthtones of grays and greens and add another texture and pattern to the wall. Below the cooktop are two large pots and pans drawers. These large high-capacity drawers come with drawer guides that are ready and willing to hold heavy loads. As a way to create a custom-fit Craftsman look, the Designer from Village included footed areas in some of the toespaces. Take a look at the two “feet” right beneath this cooktop area. A great look. Quartersawn Oak cabinetry by Dura Supreme with a gas 5-burner cooktop. | VillageHomeStores.com

Including a wood hood design in this kitchen also helps keep the space feeling warm and customized. Instead of a large and cold steel hood, a wood hood has been ordered and installed to match the kitchen. A 390 CFM Broan hood insert is concealed within the hood for ventilation when needed.

At the very center of the new kitchen is a single-level island full of more great drawer storage and an overhang for counter-height seating. The Engineered Quartz in this kitchen design is part of a grouping of promotional-priced Quartz colors. This is named “Solare” and becomes a perfect neutral no-maintenance counter surface for the kitchen. Solare is not a completely solid color. There are some subtle tone-on-tone patterns in the slabs for added dimension. Be sure to ask your Kitchen and Bath Designer at Village Home Stores about our promotional priced stone options. The look you dream of may fit within your budget after all! Quartersawn Oak cabinetry by Dura Supreme paired with a natural Acacia floor, natural stone tile, and engineered quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

But did you notice the flooring yet? Modeled here by full-time cutie and part-time flooring model “Gracie”, these LWM Natural Acacia hardwood floors set an incredible stage for this entire new Great Room space! Wood cabinets with wood floors? YOU BET!

Here the Oak cabinets are consistent in color and the Acacia wood showcases many wood colors and patterns while keeping and overall look in a Medium woodtone just like the cabinets. Did you know that Village Home Stores also can order and install interior doors for your projects? The refrigerator wall in this kitchen design includes an entrance to a home office. We designed a cabinet layout that wrapped and surrounded this entrance and created a doorway space custom fit for the office entry.

To the left of the doorway is a built-in wall oven with a microwave above. This microwave unit is a very Affordable way to get a built in look in many applications. It is just a universal countertop microwave with a trim kit ordered to frame it into the cabinet space. The same application also works well in a base cabinet of an island. To the right of the doorway is a 36″ wide Whirlpool refrigerator. This model is counter-depth refrigerator. That allows it to sit back as close to the surrounding cabinetry and panels as possible leaving more walkway space between the island top and the refrigerator doors. Be sure to discuss refrigerator depth with your Kitchen Designer and Appliance Salesperson at Village Home Stores to help find the right fit for your space and your budget.

We showcase many kitchen spaces here on the blog… but what about all of the other important rooms in your home? We recently shared a tour of the kitchen in this home in a previous blog post. See that tour here at this link. Let’s also take a tour of the bathrooms in this same home built by Hazelwood Homes in Geneseo, IL. The master bathroom is a spacious and bright space including a beautiful blend of tile. A tub surround area has been tiled to house a drop-in soaking tub and entry to a walk-in shower is just beyond it. Tiled tub surround in a home built by Hazelwood Homes. | VillageHomeStores.com

12″ x 24″ sized tiles cover most of the wall and floor surfaces. This tile size is an updated take on the 12″ x 12″ tiles of the past. In a solid color, this tile size may seem modern. Here in this space, the marbled pattern look is classic. A Cararra Marble mosaic tile has been used as an accent around the tub area and in the shower.

A large, customized tiled shower is high atop many bathroom project wishlists of our customers. This shower is bright, spacious and beautiful. Because of the location of the shower entry and plumbing fixtures, a door is not needed for the space.

The view into the shower is just as stunning as the view from the shower. A peaceful, bright space that is flooded with natural light and classic beauty. Not including a shower door can be a nice feature. What if the entry to the shower itself is one of the most important features you are after?

Custom tiled showers offer the opportunity to layout and install showers with “zero-depth entry” for the user. This means that users of any age with a handicap can enter the shower space smoothly without a step up or down at the threshold.

This main bathroom includes a shower design with a hand-held shower head and a zero-depth entry to the space. Many times this style of entrance can be included in a custom shower design in the early planning phases. For our customer with a handicap or plans to age-at-home, this is a wonderful feature to include that can be discusses with your tile salesperson at Village Home Stores.

Our expert staff can help you with design and material selection for your remodel. Better yet, use our complete Project Management Program and let us handle it all for you from start to finish. This Davenport, Iowa bathroom did just that. We helped take it from a dated bubblegum pink to a bright, clean new look and layout.

White the exit of all of those pink fixtures was a large part of the transformation, so was creating a new complete design for the bathroom. In this case, a tub/shower combination needed to be replaced with a new tiled shower space. With that change came the opportunity to update the bath vanity, lighting, and flooring surfaces. A Davenport, IA bathroom designed and remodeled completely from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Out with the pink bathroom fixtures and in with a bright, clean new palette of finishes. A tile named “Melena” in a 13″ x 13″ size is installed as the bathroom floor and a custom tiled shower uses that same tile in a 2″ x 2″ size for the floor, corner bench, and custom niche shelf. 3″ x 6″ matte finish subway tile gives a classic look and a medium gray grout is right on trend.
finishes

If getting started or discovering your own personal tastes and color inspiration sounds overwhelming, we can help with that. Just one quick visit to this board on our Pinterest page will help you see material selection mood boards and click through to the projects we have featured with that color palette. In this space, a new bathroom vanity has been installed from our Koch Classic line. The classic shaker-style door is named “Savannah” and maple wood has been painted with Koch’s “White” painted finish.

A cultured marble vanity top from our Onyx Collection line is installed from wall-to-wall. The color used here is named “Dove”. The Onyx Collection is a Midwest-made product and can be custom ordered to any size and shape. With many color and finish options available, this line has taken the traditional marbled look of vanity tops and introduced a flecked faux granite/quartz approach to their designs. Select from dozens of unique integrated bowl shapes or add an undermounted bowl (shown below) for a true stone-top look.

The “Cassidy” series by Delta Faucets is installed on the vanity and in the custom tiled shower. The shower includes a removable hand-held showerhead feature. A large percentage of the bath remodels we complete at Village Home Stores involve removing a large tub and replacing that space with a larger shower area. The easiest and most effective way to use your space is to do this by creating a custom tiled area for the shower. Unusual wall locations, ceiling angles, and previously unused areas can all become a part of a custom shower. It is very important to note that many times the motivation of our customers to add this shower space is to have the option to age-at-home.A Davenport, IA bathroom designed and remodeled completely from start to finish by Village Home Stores including a custom tiled shower. | VillageHomeStores.com

Remodeling with the goal to age-at-home is becoming a motivator to many of our clients.  One of the most important areas to address to make this possible is making the home’s bathroom space accessible. Adding easily accessible areas and including features like grab bars allow our customers the ability to do just that! These grab bars from Delta look right at home in the new bathroom. The Delta Decor Assist TP Holder includes a grab bar within the TP holder design!

Showroom Updates 2017: New Flooring Showroom

Just a few short years ago we expanded our showroom to accommodate the return of a floor covering department to Village Home Stores. We have already outgrown that space and saw a need to do some re-arranging with our products as a part of our 2017 showroom updates. We now have a much larger space to accommodate all of the samples and product displays needed. Many of our customers are still learning that we offer a full floorcovering and tile department. From hardwoods to backsplash tile, we have it all:

See some of them here on our award-winning Houzz page. As you may have read in a previous post, our lighting showroom has now been moved to the first level of our showroom. That freed up a lot of space upstairs to use four areas for the new flooring department. Press play below to tour our new showroom space now located upstairs at 105 S State in Downtown Geneseo, IL.

Port Byron, IL- Bath Remodel Plays With Size and Pattern

Have you fallen in love with one tile….but then struggled to complete the look? Maybe that one tile is all you need! You don’t have to include a flashy mosaic accent, or mix multiple textures together to get a complete look. This Port Byron bath remodel is a wonderful example of how you can use the same tile but play with size and installation for a great look. Paramount’s “Urban Stone” series is used throughout the bathroom. Instead of covering the entire bath with the exact same tile, variations of sizes of tile are used but all in the “Cognac” color. The flooring, tub deck, threshold, shower base and walls are all tiled but with sizes varying from 1″ x 2″ to 12″ x 24″. Let our tile experts help you find the perfect material and install concept for your space. tile

When entering the new bathroom, you are greeted by a beautiful new bath vanity. This Furniture style sinktable is from our Bertch Bath line and is made not that far away from us in Waterloo, Iowa. The “Interlude” sinktable can be ordered in a variety of sizes, wood species, and finishes. A 30″ wide sinktable is installed here in a Hickory wood with “Brindle” stain applied. We love how this Brindle stain highlights the Hickory wood grain on the cabinet. An open shelf below can be left empty or used for linens or baskets of toiletries.

Bertch Bath wave bowl style. | VillageHomeStores.comBertch Bath also fabricates cultured marble vanity tops. This bathroom includes one from their faux granite series. The color is called “Concrete” and has been ordered in the Gloss finish. An integrated vanity sink is included in the mold used to form this top. The “Wave” bowl style is an updated new bowl option that looks stylish and sophisticated in this space.

Another updated detail is the use of a large-format tile in a newer size and shape. 12″ x 24″ sized tiles truly are pacing themselves to become “the new” 12″ x 12″ tile. Installed as the floor tile and horizontally for the wall of the new shower, the look is great! This Port Byron bathroom began as a large space, but was not using that space as smart as it could have been. There was a separate tub and shower area in the original bathroom, but that left a lot of open space in the center of the room. That suggested that there was plenty of space for something to be larger in the new design. Now the custom tiled shower is nearly three times the size of the original:
Custom tiled walk in shower. | VillageHomeStores.com

Did you notice that with the new layout a shower door isn’t needed? Step over the tiled threshold into the shower and the showerhead and controls all splash and spray into the back of the space. To help light pour into the shower, fixed panels of glass have been installed on the wall dividing the tub and shower and also the new wall on entry into the bathroom. These help create a “clerestory” window effect and brighten the space naturally while adding a custom look. glass_areasTiled shower niche. | VillageHomeStores.comDon’t forget to discuss with your designer at Village Home Stores where you will be keeping things in the new shower. Chances are your designer, tile salesperson, and even tile installer will suggest a tiled shelf or wall niche. It would be a shame to have a gorgeous new tiled shower customized to fit in your space and not include an option like this to customize your use of the space. Who wants to have to keep soaps and shampoos on the floor of the shower?! Be sure to check out this ideabook on our Houzz page showcasing other tiled showers. This ideabook includes shower niches, tiled shelves, and custom tiled benches we have posted from our past projects.

The tub area is no longer dark and crowded. Instead, a tiled tub deck seems to just be an extension of the custom shower. The same small-scale tile used as the shower floor is repeated as an accent surrounding the tub surround. Even with all of this medium-dark tile throughout, the bathroom layout keeps the space bright and feeling open.
