Showroom Updates 2017: New Lighting Showroom

As we mentioned in our previous post, Village Home Stores is growing. In 2017 we have invested in a larger and revised showroom to offer our customers the best customer experience possible for their project with us. Village Home Stores has become the expert destination for Kitchen & Bath design in our region. Now our new showroom space makes it even more fun and exciting to shop for Appliances, Cabinetry, Lighting, and Floorcovering all in one location. Lighting showroom Geneseo, IL | VillageHomeStores.comOur store is committed to being a family-owned and locally-owned business. Our customers have a great appreciation that they can pair our expert service with competitive prices to box stores. That means our customers get competitive prices but don’t sacrifice service before or after the sale. Exterior lighting displays in Village Home Stores showroom. | VillageHomeStores.com

This expansion was extensive! We will be posting a full album of photos from the process to our Facebook page over the next few days. We expanded into another storefront adjacent to our current two showroom locations. The first new space happened within our existing cabinetry entrance. That door is now the main door of our showroom. See the tour of that space here on a previous blog post. We have opened up the connecting walls into it and invested in a stylish and welcoming new lighting showroom space of over 1,200 sq. ft. before_and_after_showroom

What a transformation! With the opportunity to make the space one large design concept, we were able to select materials and products that compliment each other. Textures vary throughout from smooth marble-like quartz to rustic brick-look floor tile. Even our staff is still adjusting to coming around the corner to see this beautiful space. We have already hosted our first team meeting in the new showroom and it was nearly impossible to get over 30 of us to not be distracted by looking around. We were also thrilled that we finally have a space open enough in our store to fit all of our employees at once comfortably. Creative pendant lighting display wall in Village Home Stores showroom. | VillageHomeStores.com

We don’t just open an account with any lighting vendor. The products we sell must represent Village Home Stores as much as the brand name on the box. We view our showroom as a way to showcase the quality products that are available from our vendors. Curious about the Diode LED lighting we alwasy share on the blog and on our TV show? Come see it in person and ask questions. Didn’t think selecting the right light switches was important in a space? Notice our Adorne series installed throughout the new space to see for yourself just how important it can be.Adorne light switches and outlet systems available and on display in Geneseo, IL showroom. | VillageHomeStores.com

Our new lighting showroom was designed to make it easy to see a fixture and not have it get lost within a group of 30 other similar fixtures. Our vendors and product catalogs represent hundreds of thousands of available fixtures, It is more important to us that you don’t get overwhelmed when selecting. That is why our staff is there to help guide you through what is available for you specific needs. Creative wall-mount lighting display in Village Home Stores showroom. | VillageHomeStores.com

Viking appliances complete the kitchen. You don’t need to be working on a project to visit our showroom. You may see staff and customers meeting throughout our showroom when you visit. We often set up to meet outside of our private conference areas when discussing finishes or involving multiple departments on a project. We have included a few areas in this new showroom for our builders and customers to meet with our lighting staff comfortably. We would love for you to be able to see some of our staff at work so you can have a familiar face once you are ready to work with us. Davenport, IA- Warm Cherry Cabinets and Large Black Painted Island

This Davenport, IA kitchen has been completely remodeled to extend its footprint into a nearby dining room. There is now plenty of space for a long L-shaped layout with a large island. Warm Cherry cabinetry from our DuraSupreme line has been installed in the full-overlay  “Kendall” doorstyle and “Clove” finish. A “Black” painted island in the same raised-panel doorstyle offers a bold contrast to the kitchen cabinets and new LVT White Oak flooring.

With the removal of a wall that divided the original kitchen from the dining room taken out, there is now plenty of space for a large kitchen island. The new island measures over 8 feet in length and includes large drawer storage and doors that open to reveal slide-out shelves within. Press play below to watch this entire remodel story unfold on Season 2 Episode 6 of the Village Home Show.

This episode of our show helps to walk you through the entire remodel process from start to finish with us. We often share just the before and after parts of a remodel story… but that is not the whole story at all! This episode allows us to return to the jobsite while the real work is happening. With our show, we are able to give you access to more of the entire story that went behind the beautiful finished kitchen tours we share here on the blog. Take a look at the before and after images from this kitchen below highlighting how much more cabinet space is now available with the center wall removed.Davenport kitchen before and after remodel. | VillageHomeStores.com

Because it can now stretch into the original dining room area, this new kitchen design is nearly double what it once was. There is even an area remaining for a casual dining space with 4 chairs. Just because we have absorbed the original dining room as part of the new kitchen, doesn’t mean this home is left without one. An adjacent front room has now been claimed as the new formal dining room area. The before and after image below shows the view into the new kitchen from this new front room dining area. Dining room becomes part of kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

The window that now sits above the sink was far to low in the original dining room to accommodate a kitchen beneath it. A new window was installed at a taller height and now instead of looking up to a pass-through, the sink user gets a beautiful view! The cabinetry surrounding the new kitchen window has been finished with raised-panel ends for an added design detail. Can lighting is concealed behind a matching cherry valance and a cherry dustcover on the ceiling completes this look.

Beautiful Cambria® Quartz counters in the “Fairborne” design are installed in a standard “Eased” edge profile. A Tumbled Travertine tiled backsplash is a perfect match in tone adding a new texture against the smooth, polished quartz tops. A 50/50 well sink by Blanco in the “Biscotti” finish has been undermounted to the quartz.

The remodel process with Village Home Stores doesn’t begin on that first demo day. Your remodel starts with us in the store during the designing and material selection phases of your project. A wood hood look like the one shown above begins as a full-color rendered design you can see in your first presentation from our store. Renderings help you get a better vision for the finished space including the materials you have selected.

As you will see in the episode, there are plenty of specialty cabinets within this kitchen design. Dura Supreme offers a wide variety of pull-out options including knife blocks, spice racks, and this towel bar cabinet. Keep cleaning supplies accessible but separate from food with one of these unique specialty cabinets. This towel cabinet also works great in a bathroom or laundry room design.
pullout-towel-cabinet

Surrounding the refrigerator is a tall pantry cabinet that has been fit with adjustable slide-out shelving. There is a built-in pantry storage area on the end of the kitchen that is not shown in these images. That pantry can now be used for household items and food storage can be exclusively in this tall unit adjacent to the refrigerator.

The tall pantry is capped off with an open shelf cabinet that faces those entering from the garage-entry end of the kitchen. Applied doors have been attached to the end of this cabinet to sit flush with the pantry doors and customize the look. The shelves can be used to display seasonal decor, cookbooks, or decorative dishes. This design also works well on the end of an island as we have shown in this Moline kitchen tour.

Erie, IL- Kitchen Remodel Updated and Upgraded

This Erie, IL kitchen has been updated and upgraded. A similar footprint to the original kitchen, but using beautiful new materials and upgraded features throughout. Oak cabinetry and laminate tops have been removed and a new Cherry kitchen from our Koch Classic line has been installed. The Cherry “Prairie” doorstyle in a medium “Briarwood” finish compliments the existing Oak trim and doors in the space. The Cherry selection is an updated look and the rich wood grain of the wood is a major upgrade from the Oak.

All of the kitchen appliances remain in roughly the same locations. The original kitchen single-height peninsula has been replaced with a dual-height design and the kitchen sink has been shifted from the center of the peninsula to the corner. With the new layout, the largest transformation happened on the wall opposite the original kitchen L-shape layout:
Kitchen before and after photo. | VillageHomeStores.com

So much of that original wall was getting no storage use. The new design now includes that whole wall into the kitchen. That tall pantry cabinet space is now fit with two 12″ deep tall pantries, each 24″ wide with a single door. Installed side by side, this gives the finished look of a 48″ wide cabinet and leave a large part of that wall available for more cabinetry. Because of a casual dining area on that end of the kitchen, the new base cabinets transition back at an angle to meet the shallow pantries. This new design now provides a large countertop that cab be used to load and unload the pantry or refrigerator or set up as a coffee station or work surface. At this location, the space is very versatile.
Shallow pantry cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.com

A 12″ deep pantry can store quite a bit within, especially when it is four feet wide! Other specialty upgrades include the addition of a pull-out cutting board concealed above the top drawer of a base cabinet. A great feature in just the right location. When selecting specialty items like tray dividers, cutting boards, or spice cabinets, be sure they are located in the area you plan to reach for them.

On each side of the new Whirlpool range are base cabinets fit with sliding shelves. These cabinets are perfect for keeping pots and pans sorted. By keeping this look symmetrical on each side of the range, a comfortable landing space of counter is available for the user on both sides.
Sliding shelves in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

Moving the kitchen sink to the corner frees up the entire peninsula for a worksurface. A corner sink also adds interest to the layout. Our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system spotlights a beautiful new tiled backsplash along both walls of cabinetry. The main field tile is a 3 x 6″ polished Travertine. The decoline of accent tile is from our Glazzio line and is named “Tranquil”.
Cambria Quartz in Hampshire design. | VillageHomeStores.com

Cambria Hampshire. | VillageHomeStores.comThe short area of backsplash on the peninsula has been given a different treatment from the tiled walls. This jump from counter height to bar height (shown in profile on right) is only a few inches. Instead of creating a bright contrast of travertine tiles, a splash has been installed of the same Cambria Quartz material from the countertop. The “Hampshire” Cambria Quartz has been given the “Full Bullnose” edge profile.

The peninsula side facing toward the Great Room has been fit with a wainscot panel and trim for a customized look. A four-panel wainscot design and furniture base completes the look. On the end of the peninsula that meets the wall, a full-height door cabinet opens into the Great Room. This becomes a great place to store items that might normally pile up on end tables or countertops. The cabinet helps finish off the peninsula and provide a space to hide these items out of sight. Speaking of hiding things out of sight, notice with the dual-height peninsula design that you can’t see into the kitchen sink?

Custom wainscot panel. | VillageHomeStores.com

crown molding on cabinetNow that the soffits have been removed, there is room for the new cabinetry to reach higher and still have space for a more appropriate crown molding to be applied. Crown molding may not seem like a significant detail but it is this final “trimming out” phase that helps complete any finished kitchen. Including crown and undercabinet molding help polish off the look. On the back of the peninsula area a furniture baseboard molding was applied where the panel meets the new flooring. A polished and customized look. Don’t miss out on the opportunities in your own design to help your space look carefully planned out and customized specially for your home.

The new flooring in the kitchen is from our Tarkett line. It is a Luxury Vinyl Tile, or “LVT” floor and looks perfect in this new kitchen. LVT can be installed grouted with a special form of grout or groutless (shown in this home). Read more about LVT and how it is installed here on a past blog post. A rolled edge treatment on these tiles help this groutless look to be forgiving of subfloor imperfections and best of all, no grout to clean!

Port Byron, IL Remodel: An Upscale and Pet-Friendly Before & After

This Port Byron, IL couple wanted their remodeled kitchen to have an upscale look but still seem approachable and warm. We think their design and materials from Village Home Stores have achieved this look perfectly! Rich dark cabinets in a Beech wood have been stained in a “Mocha” finish from our Koch Classic line. “Yukon” Quartz countertops are a contrast in color and sheen.
Kitchen remodel in Port Byron, IL | VillageHomeStores.com

Such a transformation has taken place! The original kitchen (see before photo below) included soffits at the ceiling and basic slab-style cabinetry. There was plenty of space in the center of the kitchen to accommodate a temporary island/table area. An L-shaped section of cabinetry on one side of the kitchen and a row of cabinets beneath the window on the other side.
before

The new design took all usable space and kitchen a new design solution has been installed including a peninsula. This peninsula helps divide the kitchen from the living area and it also adds an overhang area for counter-height seating. There is a pub-height table right outside of the new kitchen for more seating when needed. The remodeled open concept now seems more like one large and cohesive look from kitchen into the dining/living space.
kitchen_seating

The dark cabinets and quartz counters look sophisticated and beautiful but the flooring and backsplash once again almost steal the whole show! The customer pointed out when we arrived to photograph the finished space that new visitors are always first to mention the flooring. Good thing their dog “Buoy” seems to have a bright future in modeling because he can’t wait to show you his new floors.
AduraScratchResist

Mannington Adura Plank flooring with Scratch Resist technology. | VillageHomeStores.comJust look at this guy. Buoy is a very good dog but he does have paws and claws. No worries though because his owners selected Mannington’s Adura Plank flooring with Scratch Resist Technology. This patented performance coating with Aluminum Oxide helps keep floors looking newer longer by providing exceptional resistance to everyday household scratches.  Watch a video on Scratch Resist here to see how this product is so durable it wears off the ridges of a quarter before any damage is made to the floor the quarter is rubbed onto. No worries Buoy, this Oak “Rawhide” colored floor is as pet-friendly as you can find! Adura Plank flooring is a Luxury Vinyl Tile. We call this material “LVT” for short and while you may have seen us feature more ceramic look LVT here on the blog, the wood look planks are just as awesome!

With the new cabinet layout came added storage solutions for the space. A tall pantry caps off the window wall of the kitchen. This cabinet has been fit with five slide-out shelves so there is plenty of space in this 24″ deep unit for dry goods and even small appliances. This tall piece really helps anchor the look of this section in the kitchen.
Tall pantry with shelves. | VillageHomeStores.com

This wall of the kitchen includes a window and a nice stretch of countertop surface. With the new addition of the peninsula, the counter space has doubled. This corner has now become a fantastic place for many tasks. meal prep, serving, and even a dining space with the counter-height seating. Even though there can’t be wall cabinets above this added peninsula, the base cabinets make up in great storage space. A stack of two deep drawers can house pots and pans. A 5-piece drawer front option has been selected for this project. Instead of a smooth, “slab” style these 5-piece option looks more similar to the doors of the cabinetry.
deep drawer

Many times selecting this 5-piece drawer-front option is no added cost to your cabinet purchase. Be sure to discuss which drawer front style is best for your project with your designer from Village Home Stores.  There are of course other specialty cabinets included in the new kitchen. A pull-out trash cabinet, tray divider cabinet, and even a wood divided silverware drawer (see below). Making the most of your cabinet space is how you end up with a great design that you can fall in love with every time you use it.

The doorstyle selected for this Port Byron kitchen is named “Aspen” by our Koch Classic line. A flat-panel is the most common door choice when you are looking to end up with a more “Transitional” finished kitchen. It is important to point out though that flat-panel doors can come in a variety of styles and even construction.  If you scroll back up to look at the open pantry door you will see the inside of that open door looks like a raised panel of wood. That is because the center of the “Aspen” doors are solid wood center panels. This makes for a more sturdy construction and gives a more rich and realistic woodgrain than a veneered look.
change_of_depth

The rails and stiles that create the frame around this center panel are also varied in size on the doors. Transitional meets Contemporary, the narrow sides with thicker top and bottom portions of this door give a unique style and look to the cabinet. The look it finished off with a standard crown molding. The soffits have been removed and the new layout has cabinetry stretching all the way to the ceilings. The depths of some of these wall cabinets has been varied to add extra design interest.

If the cabinetry or flooring didn’t steal your attention, the mosaic tile backsplash certainly will! Pietra Art mosaic tile from the “Woodland Park” series has been installed throughout. This mosaic tile perfectly blends the colors from the cabinetry, countertop, and flooring all into one multi-colored mosaic.
Linear mosaic tile. | VillageHomeStores.com

The kitchen tile backsplash is illuminated and showcased by our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system. The high contrast from the dark cabinetry to the lighted tile and counters make this tiled surface even more dramatic. We love that there are even Stainless Steel lines in the mosaic to help tie in the appliances with the complete look.

This kitchen remodel is the type of space that we think anyone can take something away from touring. The blend of materials and colors all showcase just some of the many options available when working on your own kitchen. Transitional style kitchens give clean and timeless looks without heavy or ornate design elements. This look reads high-end and effortless. We can say though that getting this effortless look did take work. Our thanks to Durian Builders for the work they did in this home. “Buoy” and his family love their new kitchen from Village Home Stores.

Kewanee, IL Remodel: Timeless, Transitional, and Right at Home

This home in rural Kewanee, IL was ready for an update. Modern needs in the space-planning of the design paired with a classic look to match the history and style of the farmhouse. Proof that you can update without “time-stamping” your project, take a look at this beautiful new timeless finished space:
Kitchen remodeled in Kewanee, IL by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

White painted Birch cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the flat-panel “Prairie” doorstyle is the perfect selection to achieve a timeless and transitional look that can be styled a number of ways over the years. Selecting classic choices like this as the more permanent elements to your design gives your finished space a longer life and allows you so many more options over time. The painted white flat-panel door remains to be one of the top-selling cabinet choices throughout ALL regions of the U.S. because it looks right at home in so many spaces. This same cabinet could be in a metropolitan loft yet looks just as perfect in this countryside setting.
Remodeled farmhouse kitchen in Kewanee, IL. | VillageHomeStores.com

Most of the change that happened in the remodel process came with updating the room itself. The entrance from the garage into the kitchen and nearby hallway received new doors. A wall dividing the kitchen from the Living Room was removed and a header was built in the location of the original wall. A single wall removed from the equation and an entire flow and function has been given to the space. New painted white base trim was also installed to surround the layout. The kitchen cabinet layout has been carefully selected to make the most of the limited space available. A previously unused wall has been fit with this custom buffet/sideboard area:
Buffet area in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

What a beautiful statement area to help separate the kitchen from the dining space while keeping the same look and feel of the overall design. This sideboard area is shallow enough to not crowd the kitchen space. The cabinets below are deep enough to accommodate drawers and offer up a great countertop space for serving and entertaining. The center cabinet has been fit with textured glass and lit with our Diode LED lighting system (more on that later).  Staggered depths and heights of this section of wall cabinets also help give it a customized look. The kitchen has been opened up into the front Living Room and now the entire main level of this Kewanee home is open and bright. With no Formal Dining Room in the home, a small kitchen table was tucked in the corner in the original kitchen. With the dividing wall now removed, the table area seems far less crowded and access to the pantry is easier. Take a look at the before and after of the area where the wall was removed:
Before and After kitchen wall removal. | VillageHomeStores.com

As we mentioned earlier, a header had been planned to go in the same location of the wall being removed. During the remodel process the header was installed and prepared for the plasterer to come in as planned to finish off the look. The more the customer looked at that beam in place, the more she liked the look it gave and the dividing quality it gave from the kitchen to the Living Room. She started searching on Pinterest and found an idea to trim out the opening to suit the look of the home. After showing it to the carpenters from Durian Builders, a quick sketch was drawn up to mimic the design of the valance above the kitchen sink. We think the end result looks even better than the pin!
Pinterest Kitchen Ideas. | VillageHomeStores.com

Repeating design elements like this doorway detail and valance help give a finished space that expert touch. We think this is wonderful detail that helps make this remodeled kitchen look like it has been the kitchen that belonged in this home all along! The original space had soffits that dropped down from the ceiling and a track light system to light the kitchen. The new design has wall cabinets and crown molding that stretch up to the ceiling and can lighting has been placed along the perimeter with a ceiling fan in the center (see  image above). The main L-shape of new kitchen cabinets have been fit with storage solutions like a corner lazy susan, tray divider cabinet, and slide-out shelves near the range.
Koch cabinets. | VillageHomeStores.com

See the full album of over 40 photos from this project (including before photos) over here on our Houzz page. There is plenty of added storage space available in the walk-in pantry. This original pantry on the opposite corner of the kitchen has been fit with a custom walk-through pantry front ordered to match the Koch kitchen cabinets. The pantry area now looks like a part of the kitchen. Now because of the location of the pantry in the now open space, it can act as a pantry and broom closet.
pantry door and flooring

Is hallway envy a thing? We sort of think it may be now. Would wouldn’t love We can’t possibly give you an honest tour of the new kitchen without admitting our own favorite part… the Hickory hardwood floors! With these areas combined into one gorgeous space, the home has been styled beautifully by the customer. This cohesive and styled look and open space showcases the hardwood so well.

Hallmark hardwood flooring in Hacienda Hickory Smoke. | VillageHomeStores.com

The home honestly looks magazine ready and the flooring is the main stage this is all set upon. Hallmark Flooring’s “Hacienda Hickory Smoke” hardwood is now in place in the new kitchen, down the hallway, and through the Living Room. We even installed this same hardwood the the entrance from the garage into the home. The rich dark stain gives the perfect contrast to the white doors, trim, and kitchen cabinetry.

A more subtle detail in the finished kitchen is the use of a glass subway tile for the backsplash. The subway tile shape and pattern are a classic choice and the glass material adds a unique texture and tone to the finished look. Shown here iluminated by our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system, the subtle “Buff” color of these Jeffery Court 3″ x 6″ glass tiles stand out perfectly where a solid white tile might have gotten lost in the white kitchen.

Most of the kitchens we featured here on the blog have included this same Diode LED lighting system. We thought we would share with you that this same low-profile series of lighting can be used in so many different applications. In this kitchen we also installed it vertically on the interior of the center glass-door cabinet to light the shelves and glass (see image below). This lighting comes in a variety of styles and can be used indoors and outdoors. Click here to learn more about Diode LED lighting.

The backsplash covers the wall area from cabinet to countertop and what pulls all of the colors together is the Cambria Quartz countertop. The “New Quay” design by Cambria is a palette of soft whites and warm greys. This quartz selection is a neutral choice that will look great for years to come. Plus because Cambria Quartz is one of the most durable surfaces available for residential and foodservice areas, it WILL look great for years to come. Cambria remains to be considered as thought-leaders in the quartz industry and always launch new designs and patterns that are on target with trends.

East Moline Remodel: A Bright and Beautiful Before & After

This East Moline, IL kitchen has been given a whole new look and layout. It is always so amazing when just a few location changes in a layout can make such a big difference for our clients. Look at how bright, beautiful, and inviting this new kitchen is.
East Moline kitchen remodel by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Before we show you around the new space let’s look at the “Before” part of this story. Like many kitchens in the area, this original space had soffits above the wall cabinetry. This was the desired look at the time the original kitchen was installed. A peninsula divided the kitchen area from the nearby dining space. A soffit and suspended wall cabinets hung and acted as a visual divider between the two spaces. This layout not only blocks traffic in a very busy area of the home, it also blocks a lot of light and sight from the kitchen into the nearby rooms.

The new kitchen layout includes an island centered in the space and removes the peninsula. Now the kitchen, casual dining, and living room areas seem to be all one collective space with a more open concept. island_walkway

A large bi-fold pantry area was native to the original space. This pantry offers a lot of storage without intruding on the pathway from the formal dining room into the kitchen. The new kitchen island was ordered in a finish to best compliment the medium oak stain on the pantry doors and trim.

Koch Classic’s “Acorn” stain has been applied to a Red Oak wood. There could’t be a better complimentary finish to match the existing woodwork.  The island offers two large drawer stacks with a pull-out waste basket in the center.

There is a lot to be said about creating a kitchen design that hosts an island without a sink or cooktop included in it.  Think about how wonderful it would be to always have access to a large clear space to work on any type of project throughout the day. Including an Engineered Quartz countertop as the worksurface in the kitchen makes it a non-porous and durable surface to work on as well. This color is called “Paydirt” from our Klondike series of quartz. A “Beveled” edge profile has been applied to the quartz. The cooking zone of the kitchen design is home to a freestanding slide-in gas range with convection and microwave hood by Whirlpool®.

Replacing the older installation style that required a “sill” or “brace” of countertop behind the unit, these new ranges look sleek and built-in. The new freestanding models include front controls on the electric and gas units and a full-depth construction so they rest flush against the back wall. Your current freestanding range can be replaced with one of these units for a customized look. Any standard 30″ wide opening can accommodate one.

Even with a standard 30″ wide unit, a 5-burner cooktop can be included. Full-width cast iron grates allow you to easily slide pots and pans from one burner to another. The grates are dishwasher safe, and their satin finish resists wear and tear. Read more about some of the incredible features (like rapid preheat) and sleek new design of these full-depth ranges here on a previous blog post. The backsplash tile in this new kitchen draws your attention immediately. Travertine 3″ x 6″ tumbled tile in a natural “Light Noche” color from Daltile has been paired with a deco line of Peitra Art’s  “Bliss Cappuccino” tiles:

travertine_tileTake note that tumbled stone tiles like this Travertine can be installed and grouted to have two different finished looks. You can leave the natural characteristics of the tiles showing (shown to the right) or choose to fill in the gaps and crevasses with your grout. Be sure to discuss the finished look you are after with your tile installer before they begin the project. The texture and style that this backsplash adds to the finished space is showcased by our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system. We have found that this lighting system is a key element to a successful finished remodel project. Our customers are always so glad that they included it in their design. Even during the daytime hours, it is difficult to imagine this kitchen without that backsplash and countertop getting the lighting they deserve. Press play below to see how lost the tile looks when the lights turn off.

The Project Management team replaced the original kitchen window with a new double-hung unit. The main perimeter cabinetry for the kitchen is a bright painted finish called “Pearl”. An “Umber” highlight glaze has been applied to the “Seneca” doorstyle. Soffits have been removed and the new wall cabinets stretch all the way to the ceiling with crown molding applied at the top. This grants more available storage space in the wall cabinets and an updated look.

The new layout feels far less cramped now that the peninsula doesn’t cut off the kitchen from the rest of the room. It is as though the same counter space from the original kitchen peninsula has been shifted into an island top that is now easier to access and use for many tasks. The kitchen sink on the perimeter of the kitchen is an under-mounted model by Blanco in a “Truffle” finish. A 50/50 split layout (shown below) is just one of the many options you have available to choose from when selecting an under-mount sinks.

The island has been finished off with an applied door look on each end and spanning the full back panel side of the island. That same treatment has been applied to the refrigerator end panel that caps off the end of the new kitchen. This end treatment option creates such a polished and customized look. A smooth end panel would not give the opportunity for any of the highlight glaze to be applied. With the sunlight that pours in from a set of french doors next to it, this paneled look is a perfect detail!

The refrigerator was moved to this new location from the opposite corner. Now the cooking center is open and not crowded. There is plenty of landing space to load and unload the refrigerator. New flooring was installed in the living room and the new kitchen. Luxury Vinyl Tile by Mannington called “Corsica Cavern” perfectly ties all of the kitchen finishes together and warms up the space. LVT gives you the look of ceramic tile but a softer surface to work on and warmer to your bare feet. Learn more about LVT here on a previous blog post.

Geneseo, IL Remodel- Rustic Beech Kitchen

This kitchen remodel was done by a homeowner in Geneseo, IL with design and materials coming from Village Home Stores. The original kitchen included a wall that divided the kitchen from the dining area. With the wall now removed, the new space is full of light and space. Now in place of the wall is a peninsula of cabinetry and countertop that has quickly become a favorite place for visiting grandchildren. main

silestone sierra madre quartz. | VillageHomeStores.comOne of the sure signs that this peninsula is the place to be in this new kitchen is a plate of treats awaiting guests. What grandchild (or visiting Village Home Stores employee) can resist pulling up a stool to chat or help out in this great new space. The countertops selected for this remodel are by Silestone Quartz in “Sierra Madre”. Added piece of mind is that Silestone includes Bacteriostatic Protection  which means silver ions are included in the quartz to prevent the propagation of bacteria.  A perfect added value to this selection since this new peninsula area is ideal for for preparation and serving. Can’t you just picture a “gaggle” or grandchildren all gathered at this top making Christmas cookies? An outlet has been installed at the very end of the peninsula for small appliances or even a laptop or tablet can be plugged in if used as a desk.

With all of those guests and a bright new space to enjoy, these homeowners better stock up on some snacks! There is plenty of places to store them within the pantry zone of the new kitchen design. The wall that is home to the refrigerator is also where you will find a wide pantry cabinet.
Tall kitchen cabinet with shelves. | VillageHomeStores.com

Three adjustable-height sliding trays of storage plus a stationary shelf above that allow full access to the lower section. The trays are a very versatile way to use the space and extend out to allow the user to see everything within. Above is a 24″ deep space for appliances or bulk items. Click play to watch this cabinet and all of the trays in animated form. We love the addition of baskets to the slideout trays! This kitchen was so full of great storage we had to include it on a storage-themed episode of our local TV show. Watch that full episode here to see the full details tour of this great remodel!

Two incredible kitchen remodels both featuring storage solutions perfect for each home. It is amazing how something as basic as adding sliding shelves can help you enjoy and use your kitchen space more. Don’t miss out on the oportunity to fill your cabinets with the best storage potential possible.

Believe it or not this tall pantry cabinet is not the only great pantry storage section in the new kitchen. Just down the wall is a walk-through corner pantry front with a glass-door display cabinet to the right. Corner pantry cabinet in kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

Ordered to match the “Seneca Briarwood”  Rustic Beech cabinetry from our Koch Classic line, this front and two panels were used to assemble the corner area. The homeowner even installed a motion-sensitive light on the interior so that when the pantry doors are opened, the lights turn on. After just a few minutes they automatically turn off. Walk-through pantry fronts are fantastic because you can truly customize your shelving behind them any way you would like. Click play to see the pantry!

While we didn’t do any of the install work for this kitchen, we knew the project was in great hands by a VERY skilled carpenter (who has installed countless projects for our customers). Wait until you see some of the extra work that he put into making this kitchen completely customized for them. This display cabinet with mullioned glass doors got an extra custom detail added to the interior shelves.glass cabinet shelvesThe center section of the finished shelves was routed out to accommodate tempered glass inserts. Now the light installed at the top of these cabinets can pass through the glassware AND the shelves completely! Across from the pantry storage zones of the kitchen is the main prep area of of the kitchen. The sink, dishwasher and cooking areas are all found here.sink

koch all wood susan corner cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.comEach of the base cabinets on this wall is full of fantastic storage solutions perfect for any kitchen. The corner of the peninsula includes a lazy susan cabinet to access the entire corner space for storage. Note that there is no center pole in this susan design. Instead, a fixed center shelf has a susan resting directly on it. The base cabinet to the right of this susan is a space designed for storing baking sheets and cutting boards. Instead of the expected metal or wood center divider, a slide-out tray is installed. Because the walls of this tray are tall, nothing will tumble out  when you pull one from the cabinet.slideing tray divider cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.com

pull out trash cabinet. | VillageHomeStores.comPull-out trash cabinets have officially moved from the “specialty” cabinet category and have instead become so expected of any new design we rarely sell a space that doesn’t include one. Many times we are even installing more than one. The double-bin option allows you to sort recycling at the time you are cleaning up. At the very end of the peninsula area is wide stack of drawers. The top section has been ordered with two top drawers in place of one wide drawer.two top drawers in cabinet. | VillageHomeStores, com

Wood silverware dividers have been added to the right top drawer. Deep drawers below offer a lot of extra storage. Many items are now available right within reach of this great new prep space. The tile backsplash in this kitchen is a subway tile in an “Almond” color by Daltile. The mosaic insert is called “Rocky Beach” by Glazzio. offwhite subway tiles. | VillageHomeStores.com

The field tile is bright and the mosaic is the perfect blend of colors that can be found throughout the new kitchen. Our Diode LED undercabinet lighting helps showcase this tile. The main sink wall of the new kitchen includes a new Whilrpool range and microwave hood. This range is a front-control electric range with convection oven. We love how the front-control design allows for a smooth and sleek area where the range meets the backsplash. Whirlpool front control stove. | VillageHomeStores.com

This Whirlpool unit comes with the new Frozen Bake™ feature. Read more about this timesaving feature on this past blog post. Above this range is a combination microwave hood also from Whirlpool. With 400 CFMs and 2.0 cu. ft. of interior capacity it is a great choice! The surrounding cabinet design is eye-catching from all entrances into the new kitchen. Whirlpool microwave hood combination. | VillageHomeStores.comFluted details on either side of the hood are the perfect place to catch the “Black” accent glaze that has been applied to these cabinets. This accent glaze is also a great way to help allow the design to combine Stainless Steel appliances with Oil-Rubbed Bronze cabinet hardware. The accent glaze highlights the door details and even the rustic knots found in the wood. The dark finish of the hardware is right at home with this combination. Dark Hickory flooring adds extra drama to the overall look.hickory hardwood dark finish. | VillageHomeStores, com

This Hickory hardwood floor from our Hallmark Flooring line is stunning in person. The dark contrast to the cabinets looks rich and the “Sagebrush” finish is perfectly at home with the accented Rustic Beech cabinets. One of our favorite parts of the new kitchen isn’t even a cabinet! We must also point out the handwork by this homeowner in this chalkboard area he created.

custom chalkboard. | VillageHomeStores.comHe used just a few pieces of Rustic Beech trim to create a custom magnetic chalkboard area on the refrigerator wall. The lower section of molding even can hold a piece of chalk. What a great way to “extend” the cabinetry finish into a functional piece right between the kitchen and the dining areas. Awkward Kitchen Space Made Awesome!

To say the pictures do not do this project justice is an understatement. Sometimes a space puts out a feeling that can’t quite be captured in a photograph. This remodeled kitchen in Colona, IL is so bright and cheerful I wanted to stay all day and chat with the owner. According to the owner, it was a dream kitchen 17 years in the making. While we might have only been involved in the last few months of that process, it was easy to tell how happy the homeowner was now that it had come to life. L shape kitchen design

The main kitchen design did not change drastically. Wall ovens were removed and a freestanding Whirlpool range was brought in with a Microwave Hood above it. In the original kitchen, a blank wall sat opposite the space with a small dining table in front of it. A short knee-wall capped the end as you exited into the Dining Room. The new kitchen design uses this awkward space to its fullest potential adding storage and a whole lot of impact!

Building in an area for a flatscreen tv in a kitchen

Built-In FlatscreenBy creating a dine-in area that branches off from the wall, seating is added with access to added storage below. The knee-wall was removed and now the total kitchen has almost doubled in size (and storage). With the rest of the social spaces nearby, now the kitchen has become integrated into this total open area. Traffic entering from the Living and Dining Rooms is no longer blocked by wall and a clear path to the Laundry Room is available. Building in a flat-screen television to the new design creates a customized look and also allows more counter space below where a television may have otherwise been placed. the birdseye view below shows a rendering of the space.

It must be said that even though this beautiful kitchen is bright, the under-cabinet lighting truly brings it warmth. Day and night tasks will be made easier with this added element. Not to mention it takes an already beautiful space and gives it that “magazine” look!
