Geneseo Remodel: Unique, Updated, & Upscale

unique_kitchen_remodel_geneseo

This Geneseo kitchen remodel has become one of our most talked about projects of the year. A unique stain on a rich woodgrain paired with Cambria quartz counters. Watch a full episode of the Village Home Show dedicated entirely to this Before & After story. Click the video below to see the full tour (commercial free).

Cherry cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line in their “Caraway” stain is at center stage in this new kitchen. The “Lynden” doorstyle is a Transitional choice, yet when paired with the other finishes and furnishings this kitchen it almost borders along a Modern style. To get the full picture of just how much of a transformation in style this space has seen take a look at this before photo.

We don’t want to discredit the original kitchen at all. The layout and design details were way ahead of their game when this kitchen was last remodeled (22 years ago). Medium Oak raised-panel cabinetry and a beveled edge Formica top including a full-height backsplash matching the countertops. Warm grays and unique design details have not only brought this kitchen up to date, it is now ahead of the current trends.

If you haven’t noticed lately when shopping for any type of item for your home or even clothing and accessories, gray has become a powerhouse neutral. We wrote here on the blog just this past Spring that Gray is Here to Stay. Where did we officially hear this news? From the team at Dura Supreme Cabinetry who forecast gray to stay on track long-term. Projected to be popular for the next 5-8 years, that was reason enough for Dura to launch a whole line of options in the gray category for us to offer our customers.

Cambria Quartz counters in the “Torquay” design are the perfect choice for a subtle veining that compliments the cabinet finish. A blend of many types of textures and materials are at work to give this kitchen a soothing look and feel. This kitchen was full remodeled from start to finish by a team from Village Home Stores. The original kitchen was contained by walls on all four sides. before1

The Dining Room was divided up from the kitchen by this wall. Not only did this wall create two separated areas, it blocked a good deal of the natural light that the Dining Room offered. With more and more of our customers looking for a more open concept to their homes, walls often come out in remodels. In this case we removed the wall dividing the kitchen from the dining room completely and opened up the original range wall as well.

(We will get right back to that soon) first we wanted to point you to the full album of progress photos over on our Facebook page here if you are interested in how the entire project took shape.

This birdseye view above shows the new kitchen design fills the two main walls with cabinetry and extends the base cabinets in from the cooktop wall as a peninsula. A kneewall supports a bar-height top in the peninsula and a shallow buffet area is installed on the opposite end creating a casual eat-in dining area along the front entry to the kitchen.

The kitchen sink is now located on this main wall of cabinetry. With no window above the kitchen sink, a painted cabinet with reeded glass doors creates interest and brightens up the space. Our Diode L.E.D. undercabinet lighting washes the countertops and also lights the interior of this painted cabinet.
Low-divider sink in a kitchen remodeled completely by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

An undermounted sink including a low-divider configuration has been installed. This cast-iron option allows for the perfect shade of warm gray to be used in place of an expected Stainless Steel sink. There are so many textures at work here in the new design. Many of them all in the same value of gray. By using the same grays but in varied textures it creates a sophisticated “Tone on Tone” end result.
X shaped wine rack above the refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com

With plenty of storage throughout the new kitchen design, a cabinet above the new refrigerator wasn’t needed. Instead a pair of X-shaped wine cabinets has been installed. When we photographed the kitchen they had just began to “move” back into the space. Looks to us like a housewarming party needs to happen to fill this wine rack. We hope we get the invite.
raised dishwasher | VillageHomeStores.com

A raised dishwasher can be a very interesting design choice in appearance but consider the reason it might be right for you. The main benefit for raising your dishwasher up to this height is that loading and unloading the unit is far more easier when you don’t even have to bend over to do so. Many of the Full Project Management kitchen remodels we do are for families who love their home but want to rework the existing spaces to allow them to age there and stay longer. kitchen remodeling from start to finish. | VillageHomeStores.com

The most stunning area of the new kitchen is the new cooktop and hood wall. This wall has gone from a single valance in the original kitchen to a magazine-worthy look in the new kitchen!
A Glazzio mosaic tile cascades down behind a stainless steel hood. | VillageHomeStores.com

A section of cascading mosaic tile from our Glazzio line in their “Orbit” series is a blend of tile, glass, and stainless. Installed behind the KitchenAid chimney hood all the way down to the countertop. Cascading down and creating a reflection on the smooth electric cooktop, it almost looks like it flows into the countertop.

Pop-out outlets from LeGrand's Adorne collection. | VillageHomeStores.com

The main backsplash field tile throughout the new kitchen is a porcelain tile you may recognize from this kitchen over on Houzz. The Paramount porcelain tile in the Sandal Wood “Ocean Breeze” design is great as a flooring option but we prove here once again that it makes a great wall tile. A faux wood grain look compliments the Cherry wood grain of the Dura Supreme cabinets. The Adorne collection from Legrand has been installed throughout. Pop-out outlets shown here are just some of the incredible options in this line.
Adorne taptouch dimmer switches in a kitchen remodeled completely by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Softap touch dimmer switches has also been installed for the lighting plan in this new design. These dimmers can be set to the light level you desire and then with a single tap brought back to that level. Learn more about the Adorne collection and see a full Master Bathroom fitted with them in this recent episode of the Village Home Show.
This modern fixture from ArtCraft Lighting is the perfect choice to compliment the trees just outside the new kitchen. | VillageHomeStores.com

Two of those dimmers control the dining lighting selected for this new space. Located in a beautifully serene wooded lot just outside of Geneseo, the view looking out from this new kitchen are also amazing. This Artcraft light fixture plays perfectly with the branches outside of the Dining Room.
A drum shade with a unique look. | VillageHomeStores.com

In keeping with a more organic style and lines, this drum shade fixture hangs above the casual dining area on the opposite end of the new kitchen. A Stainless Steel suite of appliances from KitchenAid was also installed throughout.
Combination wall oven and microwave by KitchenAid including soften function. | VillageHomeStores.com

KitchenAid offers a great look plus incredible features on every model. In place of a double wall oven we included a combination wall oven and microwave. This model includes convection features so the option to have two functioning wall ovens is there when needed.
A tray divider installed above a combination wall oven and microwave. | VillageHomeStores.com

Above the combination wall oven is a wood tray divider for storing bakeware. This 24″ deep oven cabinet also is the perfect location for small appliances that may otherwise clutter up your counters.
cooktop

Don’t let that incredible tile distract you from what was right below it. This 36″ wide electric cooktop with touch-activated controls is easy to use and looks great.
Pots and pans drawers in a kitchen remodeled completely by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Below the cooktop is a large cabinet fit with sliding shelves that are perfect for storing pots and pans. Remember that all of our sliding shelves are adjustable and you can always install them at the best spots for whatever height your items and lids are. There are two other areas of cabinetry that are included in the new kitchen.
other_areas

A shallow sideboard/buffet area to the right of the refrigerator and a drop zone section of cabinetry near the front entry. There was a drop zone in the original kitchen but this configuration and location helps to keep clutter hidden and offer another space for serving or displaying items when entertaining.
beveled_corner_durasupreme

To give this section of cabinetry a unique look, beveled ends have been added. These clipped corners allow the light to hit the “Caraway” finish and also gives a chance fro the crown and undercabinet molding to wrap and make a more custom look.
Mail organizer in a kitchen remodeled completely by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Concealed within the upper cabinet is a mail organizer. Clutter that may normally end up on the countertop can be stashed away out of sight. In many kitchens we include outlets in these slots to create charging stations for devices. The other area directly across from the drop zone is that sideboard/buffet section of cabinetry.
FloJet Bottled Water Dispenser concealed in cabinet provides the water to the new refrigerator. | VillageHomeStores.com

Not only does this offer a great long countertop to serve from it also allows for some added storage.  With Dura Supreme cabinetry there is no added cost or limitations to cut back the depth of a cabinet. In this case we were able to make the section of cabinetry perfectly sized to use up the shallow space of wall leading up to the front window of the home. Hidden inside one of these cabinets is a FloJet water pump. Hard water can be…well..hard on components of your home appliances. This system allows the homeowners to pump water from a large bottle into their new KitchenAid 29 cu. ft. refrigerator. You may also notice that this area has an accent counter. The “Galloway” design from Cambria is installed here for a bit of interest and a lot of sparkle.
Wood flooring in varied widths and lengths are installed at an angle for added interest. | VillageHomeStores.com

Completely remodeled from start to finish and from the floor to ceiling. Of course we have to mention the flooring. Paramount’s Monterrey Birch hardwood in the “Espresso” finish. Random widths and lengths help create a unique pattern when installed in a standard way. Installing these varied widths and lengths of hardwood at an angle sets the entire new great room off and helps this entire space have a unique, updated, and upscale look.  With a completed look this amazing, you know we had to include this kitchen in an episode of the Village Home Show!

Trend Watch: Is Gray Here To Stay?

It should come as no surprise that gray has officially caught fire as a trendy color to include in your home interiors. All you need to do it take a look at your Pinterest feed or even the covers of the magazines at the grocery checkout. Gray has found its place in the home and the kitchen. We recently had the opportunity to attend a Design Symposium hosted by our friends over at Dura Supreme Cabinetry. We spent the good deal of the day learning about current trends as well as trends forecasted to hit the industry soon.  We can’t wait to share with you what we learned from industry leaders and we thought addressing this common question is a great place to start. Weekly, (sometimes even daily) our designers get asked by our clients “Gray?! Isn’t that a trendy color to use on such a permanent project?” The short answer is yes… but allow us to present the strong case for why you should still consider it.

gray_backsplash

What used to be a fun accent color has now taken over the entire palette of color choices. When companies like Formica, Dura Supreme, and Cambria invest a large amount of money into research and development of new materials and selections for our customers it is your first clue that this “trend” is not dissolving anytime soon!

gray_kitchen_Village_Home_stores

So how much longer will gray remain “a thing”? About 5-8 more years. So if you have been holding off on gray, you still have time! Just like any color you shop for in an outfit or while furnishing a room in your home, do what you are comfortable with. If a gray kitchen from floor-to-ceiling is not your thing there are so many options on how to include gray into your space no matter what your comfort level.

classicWhat is the “Classic” approach to including gray in your kitchen? Consider one of the very first materials used in ornament and decoration… marble! You can’t get a more classic look than gray veining in a slab of natural marble. This continues to be a popular choice for kitchen countertops and Formica has even taken steps to improve options if you budget doesn’t allow for true marble to be installed. Take a look at the “Calacatta Marble” and “Bianca Luna” designs available from the Formica 180fx® series.  Larger patterns and a more realistic texture get you as close as possible for a fraction of the price. Take a look at this Rock Island kitchen we remodeled that includes a more classical look. The Koch “Oyster” paint is a subtle gray color in place of a painted white. The marble tile in the backsplash is another classic choice.

cautiousEven though gray is predicted to continue to popular for at least the next 5-8 years, you may want to take a more cautious approach to including it. If that is where your comfort-level is with the trend you still have a lot of options.

gray_paint3Think of the non-permanent surfaces of your space that you may want to revisit in the next 5-8 years. Paint is a great example. Keeping the more permanent materials like cabinets, flooring, and countertops neutral leaves the door open to  change out the wall color a few years later and get an entirely refreshed look. Other places can be in your kitchen accessories like barstools and linens.

oh heyBut what if you want to really go for it? How can you dive into the gray kitchen trend? You and your designer at Village Home Stores have so many options! There are now gray colors available in every surface for your kitchen and bath project.  Of course you can install an entire kitchen of gray and we can help you find the right balance and design for that. Accenting with gray can also make a huge impact. Here are a few ways you can accent your kitchen with gray:

gray_kitchen_accentsGray kitchen islands have been so popular in the Quad Cities and surrounding areas. We have installed many in remodeled spaces like this Moline kitchen but dozens and dozens into new homes as well.

weathered barnwood garayAnother great idea for a way to accent your kitchen with gray is to include gray floating shelves or even finish the back of an open cabinet with a gray panel. The barnwood shelves in this remodeled kitchen from Village Home Stores also displays another great accent item, teh hood. Take a look at our “Gray Is Here To Stay”  Pinterest board to see tons of great examples of gray accents in action.

gray_kitchen_islandGray has always been an option for kitchen materials but the past few years and predicted years to come, it is a force to be reckoned with!  We just installed this new gray weathered Cherry island in the showroom (shown above) from Dura Supreme and it was quite the conversation-starter at our Q.C.B.R. booth this year ( and don’t worry there is a full tour of this new display hitting the blog soon).

Something that really stuck with us when we attended the Design Symposium was a statement from Karen Wistrom ASID, Vice President of Marketing at Dura Supreme Cabinetry who said gray is “not just for prison walls and cloudy days” anymore. We agree and can’t wait to help you get started on your own project.

Bath Remodel: Counter Clutter Contained in Moline Bath

The Moline kitchen we featured on the blog a few weeks back also had a nearby bathroom in the home that was remodeled as well. Village Home Stores offers bathroom vanities available from all of our cabinet lines. We also carry the the full line of Bertch Bath products made not to far from us in Waterloo, IA. Bertch offers bath cabinetry in a number of sizes and layouts and can be ordered in many wood species and finishes.

vanityThis bathroom may only house one small vanity but there are a lot of great ideas within this new space. The first is the vanity itself. The “Hudson” doorstyle is one of the most versatile vanity styles available from the Bertch Bath catalog. This is because it can be finished and styled in so many different ways. The vanity in this space has been ordered in a Alder wood and dark “Brindle” finish has been applied. Decorative feet have also bee added in place of a toekick area to give a more freestanding and furniture look to the cabinet.

bathroom_cabinetBertch_Bath_MolineTo keep that furniture vanity appearance, a framed mirror has been installed above the vanity in place of a tri-view medicine cabinet that may be expected here. A single panel of beveled mirror is framed in the same mitered “Hudson” style as the doors. The single-door medicine cabinet installed on the nearby wall to the left creates a storage space for small items and keeps them off the vanity counter.

The wall outlet for this bath vanity is a very busy place. Many women can relate to the multiple devices like straighteners and blow-driers and curling rods that can clutter up a bathroom countertop. But why are these cords leading down to the floor past the vanity top? Because this bathroom was designed to accommodate all of those hair appliances!

vanity topA narrow bathroom caddy is tucked away between the bath vanity and the wall and the granite countertop has even been extended to add more counter space to the user at the vanity.

tiled_shower_VillageThe tile in this bathroom is bright and classic. New floor tile has been placed throughout and a brand new custom-tiled tub/shower surround has been installed as well. A strip of glass mosaic tile surrounds the new shower and glass corner shelves were installed for shower items. The new Stainless Steel shower head includes a removable handheld wand and multiple spray options.

tiled_showerAn tiled cubby within the shower wall was added to offer another location for shower items and accessories. This keeps clutter from piling up along the edge of the tub/shower base.

Moline Remodel- Great Galley!

Not every remodel we complete involved removing a wall to find space. Remodeled for an updated look with a few slight layout changes, this Moline kitchen now looks great and works even greater for the owners!kitchen_remodel_molinebefore_sink_wallGalley kitchens and even single-wall kitchens are extremely common and we remodel many in the area. When existing location of the kitchen restricts you with how much overall square footage you can use, you must get creative with the design of the new layout. Making the most of what space you have is what we love doing! Take a look at where we began with this galley remodel. A long wall of cabinets on the sink wall offered storage and even a small peninsula on the end allowed some seating and added counter space.

before_oven_wallThe opposite wall housed a wall oven and the refrigerator. An existing doorway to a stairwell blocked the very end of the cabinets from extending any further to match the sink wall. In the before photo you see here this wall of cabinetry ended at the refrigerator. A sun room at the rear of the kitchen and open to the front living room at the other end, the new design couldn’t stretch outside the room…but it can still grow. Here is a photo of the kitchen taken during the remodel process.

kitchen_remodelers_Moline_ILA new pocket door to the sun room has been roughed in and a header above has also been installed. Now that the door will not swing into the kitchen, that back corner of the wall can include two wall ovens.

DoubleOven_Molinecofee_stationDouble ovens by Maytag now can be installed right on the sun room end of the new design. A solution to the old kitchen issue of no landing space for the refrigerator is to include a counter area between the new wall ovens and the new refrigerator. This area is perfect for a coffee station. The new cabinet design no longer ends at the refrigerator. The galley kitchen now has grown to include the existing doorway and include it in the new kitchen.

Kitchen_door_frontA tall face frame and door has been ordered and installed to cover the old stairwell that has now become a built-in pantry. This new look balances the length of the sink wall across from it but doesn’t intrude into the kitchen at all. The pantry front takes up not more space than the original door and the end result actually makes the new kitchen seem larger.

spice_pullout_3inchesThe cooktop stayed in the same location but now has great storage surrounding it including this pull-out spice rack cabinet. 3″ is all you need to have spices within reach and off your wall cabinet shelves. See this cabinet in action over on our YouTube channel here.

moline_remodel_finishesThe finishes in this kitchen are a beautiful upgrade from what was taken out. Koch cabinetry in a Birch wood and “Chestnut” stain with black accent glaze are paired with “Impanema White” granite counters. With only the sink wall and the small area on the opposite wall to consider for backsplash, a tiled look is a wonderful choice. A white subway tile for the main “field” is accented by a strip of mosaic tile that stretches the length of the wall. Adding this line of accent to grab your eye also helps make the new kitchen seem larger than the original.

kitchen_installers_molineA small peninsula was part of the original design and the new kitchen also includes one as well. An angled base cabinet below helps allow even more legroom for two benches and a turned post has been installed to match the cabinetry and support the weight of the granite top.small_kitchen_peninsula

As with many remodel projects we do, the soffits from the original kitchen were taken out and taller cabinetry was installed in their place. Without stretching into the front living room or the back sun room we were able to still add storage space to the new design of this kitchen. For a kitchen this size to include a large french-door refrigerator, a double oven, separate cooktop and a dishwasher  plus more storage is a pretty great task.

Porcelain tileWe also want to mention another surface area of the new kitchen. The floors have been replaced with brand new hardwood in the kitchen. With just a single step down to the sun room and a glass-front pocket door in between, the sun room floor needed to feel like a real part of the new kitchen. Because of the back door traffic, hardwood was not ideal for the sun room but tile would be perfect. A porcelain tile with a look of wood in a very similar color was selected and installed and the choices were perfect. Selecting the right materials and the perfect application is what we help our customers do every day.
