Edgebrooke Homes- Kitchen With Blue Island in Bettendorf, Iowa

Blue cabinetry is having more than just a “moment” in the Kitchen and Bath industry! We have installed so many stunning spaces over the past fews years that have introduced a painted blue finish and now it is become such a staple option for Transitional, Scandinavian, and Modern Farmhouse styled spaces. Blue cabinetry is forecasted to remain an accent color for many years to come. Our Koch Classic Cabinetry line makes a neutral blue-gray paint called “Charcoal Blue” and it truly makes a great statement as the island finish in this Bettendorf, Iowa kitchen.

This home, built by Edgebrooke Homes, was a QCBR Fall Parade of Homes stop and it is such a wonderful example of how Village can partner with you and your builder to save you time AND money. The main kitchen perimeter is a “White” painted cabinetry in the same “Bristol” doorstyle as the kitchen island. Staggered heights and depths of wall cabinetry can help to add interest to a kitchen design that has tall ceilings. This kitchen also includes two heights for casual dining. A large dinette area at dining height, and a single-level kitchen island extends to add more seating at the island.

The pantry and refrigerator wall of the kitchen actually conceals a hidden feature. The pantry doors open to reveal access to the large walk-in pantry space that turns the corner behind the wall of cabinetry. The tall pantry cabinet is balanced by the refrigerator surround on the opposite end of this wall. Also included on this wall is a microwave drawer unit. Microwave drawers are a great way to keep the microwave appliance off of the counter and reachable for any users. Another great location for a microwave drawer is in a kitchen island. This section of the featured kitchen creates a great landing space of countertop for loading and unloading the refrigerator and also a work surface for microwave use and food prep.

Counter depth refrigerator models can really help you so much when the design demands it for traffic paths and space allowances. In this kitchen, a standard depth unit works perfectly “built-in” against the wall on one side and with a tall, deep panel on the other. A deep cabinet above completes the look. The 36″ wide Whirlpool model fits and offers so much great storage. It also stays looking great with a Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel finish that easily wipes clean.

The kitchen island includes the kitchen sink and a Whirlpool dishwasher. This dishwasher is quiet at just 47 decibels (normal conversation is at about 50 dba). A TotalCoverage Spray Arm cleans with twice the jets as usual and an In-Door Silverware Basket frees up rack space by easily fitting on the front of the lower rack or in the door to make room for more dishes.

Heartland Builders- A New Home With Contemporary Details

Village Home Stores has the great privilege to design so many incredible kitchens in a year. Lifestyle magazines, the internet, and apps like Pinterest and Houzz have revolutionized how our customers are able to narrow down their own personal styles. Because these platforms can showcase that every project can be different from the next, our own clients are beginning to embrace a very important revelation in 2017: you don’t have to do whatever your neighbor is doing. It is your home, make it reflect you! Even in the category of New Construction homes we still can say that every single home is different from the next. Take for example, this new Colona, IL home completed by Heartland Builders:

We have shared countless white painted kitchens here on the blog but this space is a refreshing contrast. Black painted cabinetry from our Koch Classic line has been installed in the full-overlay “Savannah” door. An L-shaped layout is met in the corner with a pantry and a bat-wing shaped kitchen island angles in towards the kitchen. Seating for 4 surrounds the kitchen island.

The kitchen sink is in the very center of the island and a bar-height top blocks view into the sink from the Living Room area. Quartz tops in the “Fossil Grey” color are installed in a standard Eased edge profile. This new Maytag® french door refrigerator includes the easy-to-clean, Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel finish. The refrigerator caps the end of the kitchen area and in a small niche for the Great Room a bar area has been installed.

This space is stylish and convenient when entertaining. A glass-front beverage cooler from our Danby® line frees up space in the main refrigerator and allows hosts and guest easy access to beverages. Our Diode LED undercabinet lighting perfectly illuminates the American Olean “Appeal” glass mosaic backsplash. This bar area has been tiled completely in the “Transcendent” mosaic. This kitchen has been installed within a great room that includes a living room area and dining space. The same Luxury Vinyl Tile has been installed throughout the foyer, great room, kitchen, pantry, dinette, hall, mud room, and laundry. This LVT is the “Meridain” series from our Adura click-together line in the “Steel” color. The perfect neutral sleek and stylish platform for this Contemporary styled space.

The lighting selections for this home are fantastic and each can stand alone as a very unique art piece! Four elongated LED pendants hang above the kitchen island. These pendants from our Kuzco line are in the Satin Nickel finish. Sometimes a big design impact can be made with a low-profile item. These long, narrow fixtures are a great example. They almost create columns to the island but are easy to see past and around in the open space.

A 4-light chandelier hangs in the dinette area. This light is named “Coddington” and is from our Feiss line. Talk about sculptural! We are reminded of the balance and shapes of an Alexander Calder mobile when seeing this light.

In the great room space a large 60″ ceiling fan is stunning! This fan is named “Proxima” and is from our Quorum line. The Satin Nickel finish is a perfect choice in this completed space. When turned on, it provides a lot of air flow and when the fan is turned off, it has an almost sculptural look.

That corner pantry may look large enough, but open the doors and you will find that this is just a pantry front. This cabinet walk-through pantry front leads to a large walk-in pantry area. There is plenty of style AND storage in this space. New homes like this tend to have an “Open Concept” to the spaces but you need to plan for including plenty of storage options concealed from that “open” area. This walk-in pantry if perfect for food storage but also can be great for other bulk household items.

Kewanee, IL Remodel: Timeless, Transitional, and Right at Home

This home in rural Kewanee, IL was ready for an update. Modern needs in the space-planning of the design paired with a classic look to match the history and style of the farmhouse. Proof that you can update without “time-stamping” your project, take a look at this beautiful new timeless finished space:

White painted Birch cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the flat-panel “Prairie” doorstyle is the perfect selection to achieve a timeless and transitional look that can be styled a number of ways over the years. Selecting classic choices like this as the more permanent elements to your design gives your finished space a longer life and allows you so many more options over time. The painted white flat-panel door remains to be one of the top-selling cabinet choices throughout ALL regions of the U.S. because it looks right at home in so many spaces. This same cabinet could be in a metropolitan loft yet looks just as perfect in this countryside setting.

Most of the change that happened in the remodel process came with updating the room itself. The entrance from the garage into the kitchen and nearby hallway received new doors. A wall dividing the kitchen from the Living Room was removed and a header was built in the location of the original wall. A single wall removed from the equation and an entire flow and function has been given to the space. New painted white base trim was also installed to surround the layout. The kitchen cabinet layout has been carefully selected to make the most of the limited space available. A previously unused wall has been fit with this custom buffet/sideboard area:

What a beautiful statement area to help separate the kitchen from the dining space while keeping the same look and feel of the overall design. This sideboard area is shallow enough to not crowd the kitchen space. The cabinets below are deep enough to accommodate drawers and offer up a great countertop space for serving and entertaining. The center cabinet has been fit with textured glass and lit with our Diode LED lighting system (more on that later). Staggered depths and heights of this section of wall cabinets also help give it a customized look. The kitchen has been opened up into the front Living Room and now the entire main level of this Kewanee home is open and bright. With no Formal Dining Room in the home, a small kitchen table was tucked in the corner in the original kitchen. With the dividing wall now removed, the table area seems far less crowded and access to the pantry is easier. Take a look at the before and after of the area where the wall was removed:

As we mentioned earlier, a header had been planned to go in the same location of the wall being removed. During the remodel process the header was installed and prepared for the plasterer to come in as planned to finish off the look. The more the customer looked at that beam in place, the more she liked the look it gave and the dividing quality it gave from the kitchen to the Living Room. She started searching on Pinterest and found an idea to trim out the opening to suit the look of the home. After showing it to the carpenters from Durian Builders, a quick sketch was drawn up to mimic the design of the valance above the kitchen sink. We think the end result looks even better than the pin!

Repeating design elements like this doorway detail and valance help give a finished space that expert touch. We think this is wonderful detail that helps make this remodeled kitchen look like it has been the kitchen that belonged in this home all along! The original space had soffits that dropped down from the ceiling and a track light system to light the kitchen. The new design has wall cabinets and crown molding that stretch up to the ceiling and can lighting has been placed along the perimeter with a ceiling fan in the center (see image above). The main L-shape of new kitchen cabinets have been fit with storage solutions like a corner lazy susan, tray divider cabinet, and slide-out shelves near the range.

This original pantry on the opposite corner of the kitchen has been fit with a custom walk-through pantry front ordered to match the Koch kitchen cabinets. The pantry area now looks like a part of the kitchen. Now because of the location of the pantry in the now open space, it can act as a pantry and broom closet.

Is hallway envy a thing? We sort of think it may be now. Would wouldn’t love We can’t possibly give you an honest tour of the new kitchen without admitting our own favorite part… the Hickory hardwood floors! With these areas combined into one gorgeous space, the home has been styled beautifully by the customer. This cohesive and styled look and open space showcases the hardwood so well.

The home honestly looks magazine ready and the flooring is the main stage this is all set upon. Hallmark Flooring’s “Hacienda Hickory Smoke” hardwood is now in place in the new kitchen, down the hallway, and through the Living Room. We even installed this same hardwood the the entrance from the garage into the home. The rich dark stain gives the perfect contrast to the white doors, trim, and kitchen cabinetry.

A more subtle detail in the finished kitchen is the use of a glass subway tile for the backsplash. The subway tile shape and pattern are a classic choice and the glass material adds a unique texture and tone to the finished look. Shown here iluminated by our Diode LED undercabinet lighting system, the subtle “Buff” color of these Jeffery Court 3″ x 6″ glass tiles stand out perfectly where a solid white tile might have gotten lost in the white kitchen.

Most of the kitchens we featured here on the blog have included this same Diode LED lighting system. We thought we would share with you that this same low-profile series of lighting can be used in so many different applications. In this kitchen we also installed it vertically on the interior of the center glass-door cabinet to light the shelves and glass (see image below). The backsplash covers the wall area from cabinet to countertop and what pulls all of the colors together is the Cambria Quartz countertop. The “New Quay” design by Cambria is a palette of soft whites and warm greys. This quartz selection is a neutral choice that will look great for years to come. Plus because Cambria Quartz is one of the most durable surfaces available for residential and foodservice areas, it WILL look great for years to come. Cambria remains to be considered as thought-leaders in the quartz industry and always launch new designs and patterns that are on target with trends.

Geneseo, IL- Basement Bar

We don’t just create amazing kitchen and bathroom designs at Village Home Stores. There are many other types of spaces in your home that a custom design might be needed for. The home bar is a fantastic example of one of these spaces. Sometimes you really do want to go where everybody knows your name. If you are lucky enough to have a bar this amazing in your own basement…. you had better believe a LOT of folks will want to know your name! Grab a drink and let’s take a look around.

This Geneseo, IL basement bar remodel brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “nah. I think I’ll just have some friends over and watch the game here”. Why would you ever have to go out when you have this at home? Truth is… you rarely even see real taverns with as beautiful of a custom bar anymore.

The barkeep here happens to be a bit of a Georgia Bulldogs fan but with a little bit of imagination you can picture it done up with your own team’s swag. Custom Rustic Cherry cabinetry has been distressed and a “Mocha” stain with “Black” accent glaze has been applied. The “Seneca” raised-panel doorstyle was used on the bar cabinetry. This raised-panel look is perfect for a Traditional styled bar created with the Koch Classic cabinetry.

The main cabinets included in this home bar are only visible to the bartender himself. The most important view of this space is as a guest. The bar can comfortably seat 6 at the bar-height top and two more at the counter height top (shown above). behind those barstools are custom wainscot panels that perfectly compliment the cabinetry on the interior and back bar of the space.

Wainscot panels are divided up with fluted column details and decorative wood corbel supports. As we share time and time again on this blog, details always make the design. Details you can see and appreciate plus details you can use and appreciate. Having a bar rail on the lower section of this bar helps make it really look complete.Including a bar rail on your project looks great and is so fantastic as a seated guest! Having a place to rest your feet when sitting at that height for extended amounts of time is important in making visitors feel comfortable.

Traditional polished brass bar rail is still available but and updated look is created here by using a Stainless Steel bar rail system. Another detail that most female guests can appreciate are the purse hooks that were added just below the countertop overhang.

These hooks are very necessary in public establishments as a way to keep your handbag within reach and away from sticky floors. This home bar is very well kept so sticky floors are not a problem. Instead,the purse hooks are a thoughtful detail. Lets take a look at the back bar area that bar patrons can see.

The wall has been fit with open shelves for bar accessories and memorabilia plus glass shelves for bottles and glassware. A 15″ wide built-in ice maker from KitchenAid provides uniform 3/4″ x 3/4″ x 1/2″ sized cubes. What looks like a tall pantry cabinet to the left of the ice maker is actually access to the real “back of the house”. Press play below to see this walk-through pantry front that is an entrance to the storage area of the lower level.

As you turn the corner, a 27″ wide built-in combination microwave and wall oven has been included in the design. With a lot of guests you will need to feed them. This microwave and oven are perfect for helping with that task. Directly across from the oven on the counter-height bar is a small 2-burner electric cooktop perfect for prepping food and serving guests. This smooth cooktop takes up a small amount of space but adds a lot of function to this area of the home bar. The countertops installed on the bar are a granite named “Saturnia”. In place of a polished look to the stone, a “brushed” finish has been used. This creates a more matte look and enhances the texture and patterns of the stone. Of course with all the food and drinks getting served at this bar you will need a bar sink. A single well Stainless Steel undermount sink is fit with a faucet and pullout sprayer. A garbage disposal button has been included to the left of the faucet. A tilt-out tray on the false drawer below the sink keeps sponges and dishrags out of sight when not in use. Of course cleaning up after entertaining is always made easier with a dishwasher. This 24″ KitchenAid is so quiet you could even have it running while entertaining. A mirrored back wall and glass shelves make for an impressive display for memorabilia and bottles. Glassware can also look great in this application. A colorful light system was installed behind the glass shelves to illuminate the wall in the evening. Adding mirror is a great way to open up any space.

A glass-front beverage cooler is accessed near the cooktop area below the lower counter height top. This cooler from KitchenAid can be used as a built-in (shown here in our design) or freestanding. The same is true of the 15″ ice maker.There is an impressive amount of space behind the bar. Great storage including sliding shelves, pullout trash bins, and drawers for tools and towels. For a large crowd there is even extra seating on the interior of the bar. All this seating plus pool, shuffleboard, a game table, and a walk-out to the backyard fire pit. Why would you ever need to go anyplace else but home? Another great element are the fluted columns that stretch from the bartop to the tray ceiling.

This same fluting detail can be found dividing the wainscot panels on the back of the bar. The carved wood corbel supports and fluted details are enhanced with the accent glaze that has been layered over the stain. This rich cherry wood, gorgeous granite tops, and all of the design details create a home bar that outshines many of the public spaces opening up nowadays. Geneseo, IL Remodel- Rustic Beech Kitchen

This kitchen remodel was done by a homeowner in Geneseo, IL with design and materials coming from Village Home Stores. The original kitchen included a wall that divided the kitchen from the dining area. With the wall now removed, the new space is full of light and space. Now in place of the wall is a peninsula of cabinetry and countertop that has quickly become a favorite place for visiting grandchildren.

One of the sure signs that this peninsula is the place to be in this new kitchen is a plate of treats awaiting guests. What grandchild (or visiting Village Home Stores employee) can resist pulling up a stool to chat or help out in this great new space. The countertops selected for this remodel are by Silestone Quartz in “Sierra Madre”. Added piece of mind is that Silestone includes Bacteriostatic Protection which means silver ions are included in the quartz to prevent the propagation of bacteria. A perfect added value to this selection since this new peninsula area is ideal for for preparation and serving. Can’t you just picture a “gaggle” or grandchildren all gathered at this top making Christmas cookies? An outlet has been installed at the very end of the peninsula for small appliances or even a laptop or tablet can be plugged in if used as a desk.

With all of those guests and a bright new space to enjoy, these homeowners better stock up on some snacks! There is plenty of places to store them within the pantry zone of the new kitchen design. The wall that is home to the refrigerator is also where you will find a wide pantry cabinet.

Three adjustable-height sliding trays of storage plus a stationary shelf above that allow full access to the lower section. The trays are a very versatile way to use the space and extend out to allow the user to see everything within. Above is a 24″ deep space for appliances or bulk items. Two incredible kitchen remodels both featuring storage solutions perfect for each home. It is amazing how something as basic as adding sliding shelves can help you enjoy and use your kitchen space more. Believe it or not this tall pantry cabinet is not the only great pantry storage section in the new kitchen. Just down the wall is a walk-through corner pantry front with a glass-door display cabinet to the right.

Ordered to match the “Seneca Briarwood” Rustic Beech cabinetry from our Koch Classic line, this front and two panels were used to assemble the corner area. The homeowner even installed a motion-sensitive light on the interior so that when the pantry doors are opened, the lights turn on. After just a few minutes they automatically turn off. Walk-through pantry fronts are fantastic because you can truly customize your shelving behind them any way you would like. Click play to see the pantry!

While we didn’t do any of the install work for this kitchen, we knew the project was in great hands by a VERY skilled carpenter (who has installed countless projects for our customers). Wait until you see some of the extra work that he put into making this kitchen completely customized for them. This display cabinet with mullioned glass doors got an extra custom detail added to the interior shelves.The center section of the finished shelves was routed out to accommodate tempered glass inserts. Now the light installed at the top of these cabinets can pass through the glassware AND the shelves completely! Across from the pantry storage zones of the kitchen is the main prep area of of the kitchen. The sink, dishwasher and cooking areas are all found here.

Each of the base cabinets on this wall is full of fantastic storage solutions perfect for any kitchen. The corner of the peninsula includes a lazy susan cabinet to access the entire corner space for storage. Note that there is no center pole in this susan design. Instead, a fixed center shelf has a susan resting directly on it. The base cabinet to the right of this susan is a space designed for storing baking sheets and cutting boards. Instead of the expected metal or wood center divider, a slide-out tray is installed. Because the walls of this tray are tall, nothing will tumble out when you pull one from the cabinet.

Pull-out trash cabinets have officially moved from the “specialty” cabinet category and have instead become so expected of any new design we rarely sell a space that doesn’t include one. Many times we are even installing more than one. The double-bin option allows you to sort recycling at the time you are cleaning up. At the very end of the peninsula area is wide stack of drawers. The top section has been ordered with two top drawers in place of one wide drawer.

Wood silverware dividers have been added to the right top drawer. Deep drawers below offer a lot of extra storage. Many items are now available right within reach of this great new prep space. The tile backsplash in this kitchen is a subway tile in an “Almond” color by Daltile. The mosaic insert is called “Rocky Beach” by Glazzio.

The field tile is bright and the mosaic is the perfect blend of colors that can be found throughout the new kitchen. Our Diode LED undercabinet lighting helps showcase this tile. The main sink wall of the new kitchen includes a new Whilrpool range and microwave hood. This range is a front-control electric range with convection oven. We love how the front-control design allows for a smooth and sleek area where the range meets the backsplash.

This Whirlpool unit comes with the new Frozen Bake™ feature. Read more about this timesaving feature on this past blog post. Above this range is a combination microwave hood also from Whirlpool. With 400 CFMs and 2.0 cu. ft. of interior capacity it is a great choice! The surrounding cabinet design is eye-catching from all entrances into the new kitchen. Fluted details on either side of the hood are the perfect place to catch the “Black” accent glaze that has been applied to these cabinets. This accent glaze is also a great way to help allow the design to combine Stainless Steel appliances with Oil-Rubbed Bronze cabinet hardware. The accent glaze highlights the door details and even the rustic knots found in the wood. The dark finish of the hardware is right at home with this combination. Dark Hickory flooring adds extra drama to the overall look.

This Hickory hardwood floor from our Hallmark Flooring line is stunning in person. The dark contrast to the cabinets looks rich and the “Sagebrush” finish is perfectly at home with the accented Rustic Beech cabinets. One of our favorite parts of the new kitchen isn’t even a cabinet! We must also point out the handwork by this homeowner in this chalkboard area he created.

He used just a few pieces of Rustic Beech trim to create a custom magnetic chalkboard area on the refrigerator wall. The lower section of molding even can hold a piece of chalk. What a great way to “extend” the cabinetry finish into a functional piece right between the kitchen and the dining areas.
