Bettendorf Iowa Craftsman Quartersawn Oak Kitchen Remodel

We love any chance to showcase the work that we have completed here on the blog. Many times it may seem like a lot of our projects have a similar look to each other as you scroll through our portfolio of featured kitchens. Naturally, as styles and trends appear, our projects begin to have similar themes and tones. So anytime we get something different to tour… we jump at the opportunity.  How about a break from painted white kitchens for an Oak one? Quartersawn Oak cabinetry by Dura Supreme paired with a natural Acacia floor, natural stone tile, and engineered quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

Any fan of the Arts & Crafts style or any lover of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work can appreciate the gorgeous clean lines, smooth woodgrains, and natural elements that truly bring the outdoors in. This kitchen has come a long way. The original space had white cabinets, beige laminate counters, and ceramic tile flooring. Take a look at this before photo:

And now look at this warm and inviting Craftsman kitchen. Craftsman style is all about clean lines, attention to function, and heirloom-quality material choices. This style also reflects a love of the natural, creating a connection between a space and its surroundings. Bringing the outdoors in with natural materials in this kitchen is a celebration of that important Craftsman style element. But what could be “different” about an Oak kitchen? Well for starters… this isn’t a standard Oak kitchen.

Many furniture pieces and built-in units in this Craftsman school of style include an Oak wood rich in smooth, patterned grain. However, the woodgrain patterns on these cabinets are a different variety than most expect from Oak. This is because instead of a standard cut Oak, select “quartersawn” Oak materials are used to build the visible elements. Notice the bottom rail of the door in the photo below:

That unique marbled woodgrain detail is a result of a quartersawn method of collecting raw materials. How this is achieved will be better explain in an upcoming episode of the Village Home Show that also includes a full video tour of this kitchen. The quartersawn Oak cabinetry is from our Dura Supreme line. The door is named “Hudson” and the wood has been stained with a “Butternut” stain.

The top section of some of the wall cabinet doors have been prepared for glass with a mullion design. A frosted glass has been inserted for a great look that also conceals what is within it. This kitchen design creates a large U-shape and even wraps around one of the end corners to create a small wine bar area. An X-shaped wine cubbie cabinet is an updated approach to wine storage and this added section of countertop will be great for serving when entertaining.

Of course this finished kitchen would be nowhere near as warm and inviting without our Diode LED undercabinet lighting installed. It is amazing how even during the daytime this lighting can take a kitchen to a whole new level! In this kitchen we were sure to wrap the lighting all the way around the corner into this serving area.

A great way to “bring the outdoors in” but still keep a design feeling contained and clean is with your material choices. This kitchen includes a backsplash of pencil-thin Pietra Opus Canyon Quartz tiles. These tiles add a texture and assortment of colors that add earthtones to the space. Bettendorf Iowa Quartersawn Oak kitchen with cabinetry by Dura Supreme paired with Pietra Opus Canyon Quartz tile. Kitchen remodeled from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Above the cooktop area is a section of accent tile. This tile is from the Crossroads Crushed Mood Glass series in the “Karma” colorway. These 1″ x 2″ tiles pull from the same earthtones of grays and greens and add another texture and pattern to the wall. Below the cooktop are two large pots and pans drawers. These large high-capacity drawers come with drawer guides that are ready and willing to hold heavy loads. As a way to create a custom-fit Craftsman look, the Designer from Village included footed areas in some of the toespaces. Take a look at the two “feet” right beneath this cooktop area. A great look. Quartersawn Oak cabinetry by Dura Supreme with a gas 5-burner cooktop. | VillageHomeStores.com

Including a wood hood design in this kitchen also helps keep the space feeling warm and customized. Instead of a large and cold steel hood, a wood hood has been ordered and installed to match the kitchen. A 390 CFM Broan hood insert is concealed within the hood for ventilation when needed.

At the very center of the new kitchen is a single-level island full of more great drawer storage and an overhang for counter-height seating. The Engineered Quartz in this kitchen design is part of a grouping of promotional-priced Quartz colors. This is named “Solare” and becomes a perfect neutral no-maintenance counter surface for the kitchen. Solare is not a completely solid color. There are some subtle tone-on-tone patterns in the slabs for added dimension. Be sure to ask your Kitchen and Bath Designer at Village Home Stores about our promotional priced stone options. The look you dream of may fit within your budget after all! Quartersawn Oak cabinetry by Dura Supreme paired with a natural Acacia floor, natural stone tile, and engineered quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

But did you notice the flooring yet? Modeled here by full-time cutie and part-time flooring model “Gracie”, these LWM Natural Acacia hardwood floors set an incredible stage for this entire new Great Room space! Wood cabinets with wood floors? YOU BET!

Here the Oak cabinets are consistent in color and the Acacia wood showcases many wood colors and patterns while keeping and overall look in a Medium woodtone just like the cabinets. Did you know that Village Home Stores also can order and install interior doors for your projects? The refrigerator wall in this kitchen design includes an entrance to a home office. We designed a cabinet layout that wrapped and surrounded this entrance and created a doorway space custom fit for the office entry.

To the left of the doorway is a built-in wall oven with a microwave above. This microwave unit is a very Affordable way to get a built in look in many applications. It is just a universal countertop microwave with a trim kit ordered to frame it into the cabinet space. The same application also works well in a base cabinet of an island. To the right of the doorway is a 36″ wide Whirlpool refrigerator. This model is counter-depth refrigerator. That allows it to sit back as close to the surrounding cabinetry and panels as possible leaving more walkway space between the island top and the refrigerator doors. Be sure to discuss refrigerator depth with your Kitchen Designer and Appliance Salesperson at Village Home Stores to help find the right fit for your space and your budget.

Atkinson, IL- A Kitchen Remodel Transforms This Ranch Home

We recently finished a full kitchen remodel at this ranch home in Atkinson, IL. The entire process was managed from start to finish by the Complete Project Management Program at Village Home Stores.  This means that we managed the entire process from early on in the bidding and designing phases, through the final project walk-through. Take a look at this beautiful and bright new kitchen!
A Prophetstown, IL kitchen designed by Chris Robinson and remodeled completely from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Of course this space didn’t start out giving out such bright and spacious feelings to guests and users. It began as an open but dated kitchen. Unique traits such as the wall ovens in a brick wall helped to give it an edge. With a new homeowner in 2017 came the opportunity to update and upgrade this space.
before-kitchen

Don’t worry we kept that brick! We did make quite a few upgrades in layout and materials throughout the rest of the space. This kitchen has gone from a medium-toned wood to a bright painted white. That change alone transforms the look and feel of the kitchen for guests and users. One upgrade we should begin with is that this is now a kitchen that includes 4 ovens…wait what?!?! Yes FOUR OVENS!
A Prophetstown, IL kitchen with KitchenAid appliances. Remodeled completely from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

Allow us to walk you through a tour of the new cooking center in the kitchen. A 24″ single wall oven, 24″ combination microwave/wall oven, and a slide-in gas range that includes a lower baking drawer. That offers all the convenience of each of the units for day-to-day use and lifestyle. But for those few times every year when entertaining, this KitchenAid® package offers 4 ovens all can be used at 4 different temperatures!

Many times our customers are drawn to a slide-in model of a range for the look and integration into a clean new kitchen design it allows. KitchenAid® has made such incredible changes to these sleek new models by including many features and benefits that were once reserved for their larger, more commercial style units. One new innovative feature we must mention is the shift from a “warming drawer” to the new baking drawer. Yes you can still set it on a “keep warm” function or even store your baking sheets in it when not in use. However, new changes as to how you select the setting of this drawer have opened up the opportunity to now use this space to bake or slow-cook items at a different temperature from the main oven area. All of these great features PLUS convection in the oven in a 30″ model! With all of this talk of baking temperatures and capacity we don’t want to breeze over the fact that the gas cooktop on this model is enviable as well!

5 burners that collectively range from 5,000-19,000 BTU’s. That allows you to shift from a rolling boil to a very low simmer almost immediately. Above the cooktop we have installed a wall-mount 30″ canopy hood in Stainless Steel. This hood has been fit with a re-circulation kit. We would classify this kitchen as a great example of what New Traditional is becoming in the Midwest region. A smart working layout and durable materials with clean lines help to keep a kitchen functional and beautiful. New Traditonal is also about including great textures (hello brick) and adding historic details like the schoolhouse shaped pendants used here.
A Prophetstown, IL kitchen with seating. Remodeled completely from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

We love that these “Garvey” pendants by Savoy House allow light out of the fixture and also through. Using clear glass here helps to keep the space more open and bright. The shape does lend itself to that old world look and adds style. The metal finish of the fixtures also helps reflect light and compliments the Stainless Appliances without duplicating it.

We realize we jumped right into an appliance tour without showcasing the new kitchen itself. An L-shaped kitchen design with a large single-level island fills the kitchen with storage and surfaces that are usable and accessible. The arch of the countertop at the center offers up an overhang space for the island seating.
A Prophetstown, IL kitchen with Cambria Quartz counters in Berwyn design. Island with an Ogee edge profile and a rounded seating overhang. | VillageHomeStores.com

Cambria® Quartz counters in the “Berwyn” design have been installed in a stylish “Ogee” edge profile. This decorative edge looks right at home in this space. With such a bright room and material selection, the light hits the edges of the Ogee detail and really helps to showcase the quartz color and details like that arched island top.

Quartz is a fantastic choice for a countertop investment. Once installed it is maintenance free and will look as gorgeous 15 years from now as it does today in these photos. With so many designs and edges to select from, you can almost certainly find something for any space.
A Prophetstown, IL kitchen with beveled subway tile and LED lighting. | VillageHomeStores.com

The usable space of the kitchen now seems like a larger area even though we didn’t open up or remove any walls. In fact we added to the cabinetry in the new kitchen design. On the opposite end of the kitchen used to sit a closet pantry area behind bi-fold doors.
before-hutch

Now that pantry area has become a built-in hutch and sideboard part of the new kitchen design. Still a location for great storage, there is plenty of shelf space above plus deep base cabinets with roll-out shelves below. An open counter area now allows this area to be used for serving while entertaining. Imagine it set up as a drink station during holiday get-togethers.
A Prophetstown, IL kitchen with built in hutch area. Remodeled completely from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

As you look at the above and below images it is very clear that the best way to showcase an area like this in your project continues to be our Diode LED lighting system. Keep in mind these photos were taken during the day. Even so, the lighting is what takes all of this design and material to the next level. What good is it to invest is such beautiful products if you can’t see them?
A Prophetstown, IL kitchen with beveled subway tile, herringbone marble inlay and LED lighting. | VillageHomeStores.com

There is a beveled subway tile throughout the new kitchen from our Rittenhouse Series. The color is “Arctic White Gloss”. It is important to note a very updated look to the classic subway tile of the past: gray grout. White subway tile with a gray grout installation is such a great look. It is a new approach to an old look and we continue to love every job we get to install with it. Another area that we added cabinetry to is an angled, shallow cabinet section designed for a TV on an open wall.

Just enough of a counter space for a flatscreen but look at all that added storage below! The cabinetry in the kitchen is from our Koch Classic line. The doorstyle is named “Bristol” on a paint-grade maple. This flat-panel door works well for may styles and tastes. This kitchen it was ordered with 5-piece drawer fronts and a decorative outside edge applied to the doors and drawers. In a bold contrast to the white painted cabinets is the beautiful new hardwood flooring beneath everything.

Random widths of 3/4″ thick maple from our Bella Cera Alessandria series is finished in the “Padua” finish. A painted white kitchen always helps to make a space seem larger and more brighter both day and night. The light catches the texture and varied widths so beautifully. See the full album of photos from this kitchen here on our Houzz page.

Bright white cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling. We have found that sentence to be so common when we ask our clients what their dream kitchen looks like. The great news is that look can be interpreted in so many styles and budgets. Here it looks right at home paired with coved crown molding and with top sections cut for glass creating a clerestory look. A large, single-level island sits at the very center of the kitchen design. The quartz counters on the island and perimeter are a color named “Fossil Gray”. The island includes an undermounted sink with dishwasher within reach. There are outlets on each end of the kitchen island.

Stained panels and trim have been applied to the back of the island and two newel posts have been includes as “legs” for the island. These legs and contrasting finish to the kitchen perimeter help to give the kitchen island a furniture look. A wide plank of trim spreads from leg-to-leg as an apron to help give the island a more solid look.

All of this rests atop a stunning engineered Hickory floor from our Hallmark Floors line. Varied widths of 4″,6″,and 8″ from Hallmark’s Monterey Collection in the “Gaucho” color. These Hickory floors are installed throughout the Great Room, down the hall, and as the stair landing. The lighting for this kitchen is a great example of scale and style. The Kichler “Larkin” is a 3-light pendant and the traditional lantern shape is updated with a modern finish and exposed bulbs without glass.

One pendant hangs in the Dinette. Instead of selecting a complimenting island light, the same light is used. This helps create a great rhythm to the finished design. The scale of two pendants above this island is perfect and these fixtures can be looked at or through to help showcase the overall space.

Blue Grass, IA- Go Brighter For Big Results!

Many times it is the changes in finishes that can make the largest impact on a space. Combine that with a few layout adjustments and additions and you get this week’s featured kitchen remodel tour in Blue Grass, IA. A U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula is extended and made brighter and for big results! Let’s begin with how we “extended” the space and still kept the kitchen footprint the same. A section of wall between the kitchen and the casual dining area was previously used to house a china hutch area.
Kitchen before and after. | VillageHomeStores.com

The available hutch area wall has become absorbed into the cabinetry footprint in the new layout. This change plus a shift from medium oak cabinets to a bright, painted look has resulted in a larger look and a bright new space. A peninsula has been installed again to divide the kitchen from the casual dining table but no upper peninsula cabinets were included.
inside-peninsula

New cabinetry from our Koch Classic line in the Legacy doorstyle and Birch wood finished with the “Oyster” paint. The Legacy door is one of our most popular styles from this cabinetry line. It is such a great detailed door without being ornate or over-the-top. The details are found in the rails and stiles of the door and a flat-panel center keeps the look from becoming heavy or overly Traditional.
Ogee edge profile on quartz counters. | VillageHomeStores.com

Engineered Quartz counters from our Klondike line in a color called “Tundra” have been installed. The decorative “Ogee” edge profile on the tops add an extra detail as the light highlights the waterfalling polished stone edge. This color is a fantastic neutral choice for quartz counters. It combines bright whites, soft grays, and the perfect mix of charcoal and black to blend the cabinets, hardware, and even Stainless Steel appliances together perfectly. Let’s take a look around the entire new kitchen:
A Blue Grass, IA kitchen remodeled completely from start to finish by Village Home Stores. | VillageHomeStores.com

New Hickory hardwood from our Somerset line has been installed throughout. The light wood tone is named “Moonlight” and it is the perfect finish to be paired with the soft, warm grays included throughout the new kitchen. As mentioned before, a new hutch area has been installed in the same doorstyle as the kitchen cabinetry. Including details like an arched toespace valance and adding interior lighting with glass doors to the cabinet help achieve a furniture look. The wall cabinetry in this section also extends all the way down to the quartz tops.

Our low-voltage Diode LED lighting system is the perfect choice for an area like this. These lights can be dimmed and left on as much as desired using minimal energy. Learn more about this system in a previous post here on the blog. The perfect ambient light when entertaining and even a nightlight in the evening. A new appliance package from KitchenAid® has been included in the new kitchen. KitchenAid® offers appliances with professional-inspired styles including incredible features and function.

A 30″ wide Combination Microwave and Wall Oven is full of incredible features like Even-Heat™ True Convection in the lower oven for consistent baking temperatures and faster preheat times. The Microwave above also includes convection features allowing a secondary baking/cooking option and qualifying this model as a double oven. Next to that wall oven unit is a tall pantry cabinet fit with 5 adjustable slide-out shelves. Slide-out shelves from Koch Cabinetry are able to be adjusted in location to fit your own storage needs.

Turning the corner in the new kitchen we find the new cooktop area. Cooktops can be installed in a number of different cabinets. This kitchen includes a “reversed drawer” cabinet that moves the shallow top drawer down to the bottom of the cabinet. That leaves the top section of the cabinet available for the cooktop components and power source connections. The bottom drawer here is perfect for bakeware or pots and pans lids.

The new 30″ electric cooktop includes tap-touch controls and a very versatile 4-element layout. One of the cooking elements is a triple-ring space offering a 12″, 9″, and 6″ element all in one convenient front  location. This gives you many options for cookware all in the same location. Stainless Steel trim helps compliment the cooktop with the rest of the new appliance package.

The backsplash tile is one of our favorite parts of the new kitchen! This glass 3″ x 6″ subway tile from our Florstar Interceramic line has been installed in a herringbone pattern. The tile color is named “Shimmer Storm” and the finished look is perfect with the quartz counters.

Pewter is a wonderful finish to pair with Stainless appliances in a Traditional style kitchen. The look of these “Merrick” style handles is just as though a highlight of black accent has been applied to a Stainless finish. In place of a Stainless sink, a granite composite sink in a “Metallic Gray” color has been undermounted to the tops.

Geneseo, IL- 5 Design Upgrades For Your Kitchen

This beautiful Geneseo, IL remodel has a lot to offer in terms of style and impact. As we take a look around we want to share with you 5 great design upgrades included in this tour that helped take this finished space to the next level. Perhaps one of these details might be right for your own kitchen remodel project.
Kitchen before and after. | VillageHomeStores.com

White painted cabinetry from our Dura Supreme line is paired with “Silver Cloud” granite tops. The cabinetry is from Dura Supreme’s  Bria series of construction. This is a full-access or a “frameless” series of cabinetry. The painted white cabinetry is such a bright and updated change from the original Oak kitchen. The ceramic tile from the original kitchen was able to stay in place because the new kitchen design worked with it.

#1: A Full-Height Backsplash

The first design detail that truly makes a big impact in this kitchen is the installation of a full-height backsplash instead of a tiled space. With a character stone like this “Silver Cloud” granite, a full-height splash gives the opportunity to really showcase the natural veining in the slab. Shifting the beautiful pattern up to a visible, vertical plane also gives a really high-end look.
mirrored_cabinet

#2: Mirrored Cabinets

The second design detail that you can include in your space is the use of mirror in place of textured glass in the upper cabinetry. This may even be an upgrade you can make in your existing cabinetry. At first glance, you may have thought these cabinets had glass in them. Take a closer look and you see reflections of the scenic views outside of the new kitchen. Including mirror in kitchens and bathrooms was an up-and-coming trend in 2015 and has been predicted to be a big trend in 2016 and beyond. The look is great but think about how clever this concept is. Nothing is visible behind the mirror! That frees up “display” type cabinets to be used for any and all categories of storage. China hutches, Master Bath linen cabinets, the list goes on of great locations that can benefit by including mirror inserts.

#3: Designate a Drop Zone

The original kitchen footprint has been extended slightly into the casual dining area. A double wall oven from KitchenAid® has been installed for ease of use on the customer’s back. Now loading and unloading items is easy and the tall cabinet includes storage above and below the wall ovens. The double ovens are also perfect for preparing large meals during Holidays and special events. The end of this tall section of cabinetry is capped off with a tall angled end cabinet pantry. With shelving and outlets within this cabinet it is now the perfect space for a drop zone cabinet. Hidden out of sight is a charging station, calendars, mail and all kinds of items that would normally clutter up a countertop.

#4: Upgrade A Busy Appliance

If you don’t drink coffee, why buy a french press? If you don’t bake or use your oven often, maybe pass on convection features. Our point is that you should choose areas of your kitchen to upgrade that you can continue to thank yourself for over and over. A great example is upgrading your cooktop to induction if you cook often and want the best results. This may look like a standard electric cooktop but it is actually an Induction cooktop from KitchenAid®. Induction works using electromagnetic technology. It heats the cooking vessel instead of the surface. This allows you the immediate temperature control of a gas cooktop but in a smooth electric look. The Performance Boost feature allows you to exceed the maximum heat-level setting for up to 10 minutes, perfect for rapid boiling.
induction

#5 Upgrade Access

The Dura Supreme’s Bria series a frameless construction is inspired by European Cabinetry. This allows you full access to the cabinet box. No matter what cabinet line or construction your design includes, you always have the option to place drawered cabinets where doors and slideouts can also be located. Even though the footprint of this island remained the same that upgrade was made with the new island cabinetry.before after island

Now it is easy to access pots and pans and all kinds of added items within the drawers. Cabinet hardware was carefully selected to match the scale of the drawers the handles were placed on. The back of the kitchen island was also upgraded from smooth panels to custom wainscot panels. This upgrade makes a world of a difference in the finished look especially in a great room setting where the island back is highly visible.
island_back

This new space is now bright, stylish, and makes a big impact because of the upgrades included. The full-height granite backsplash is breathtaking and including mirrors in the upper cabinets is a gorgeous look. Extending the cabinetry to include wall ovens and a pantry/drop zone allowed an easier oven experience and the new cooking zone has an incredible Induction cooktop. Specialty cabinet inserts were also included and an appliance garage in the kitchen corner keeps the counter from small appliance clutter. There is so much to love about this space.
