What’s black and white and trending all over? This featured project from Village Home Stores! It champions so many great kitchen design trends. We wanted to showcase 5 trends we spotted in this space with a feature tour. Enjoy taking a look around this gorgeous open concept kitchen space in a home by Budd Creek Homes in rural Iowa.
Trend Spotted: Waterfall Counters
When you enter this kitchen, there is no question whatsoever what is grabbing your attention. A waterfalling island countertop custom fit with Cambria Quartz in the Bentley design. This kitchen design proves that waterfalling countertops are NOT just for ultra-contemporary spaces. In fact, this kitchen leans more modern farmhouse than it does contemporary in style. Waterfall counters are making big waves in residential design and are projected to continue to trend for many years to come.
Bentley is the perfect Cambria design to harmonize the black and white finishes in this open concept kitchen. And it does so with drama! Check out the contrasting black veining and movement in these slabs. Shout out to the team at Blackstone Installation for their excellent precision with the waterfall seams and matching those veins from floor to top… and back down to the floor again. If you are curious about what these corners feel and look like, just stop by the Village Home Stores showroom at 105 S State Geneseo, IL and check out our front desk.
Trend Spotted: Matte Black
Matte blacks are more than having a moment… they are having a takeover! Matte black has become a go-to neutral finish in more industries than kitchen and bathroom design. Fashion, home furnishings, appliances, cellphones, tech, and so many other products are found and featured in this finish. Lately matte black has become synonymous with luxury. In our industry, it has the ability to soften surfaces in appearance and texture. Lighting, furniture, decor, and even the kitchen sink in this kitchen are in a matte black finish. And at the center of the kitchen, a Koch Cabinetry island in the “Savannah” door and painted “Black” finish.
Trend Spotted: Open Shelving
Open shelving and the use of “floating” shelves have been atop kitchen trend lists the past handful of years. Customers love the chance to display and access items within the kitchen design. This is another example of a modern or contemporary element crossing over into transitional, new traditional, farmhouse, and coastal designs. A new category in kitchen shelving has emerged: open metal shelves. This kitchen champions this trend so well! Two three-shelf units flank the range hood and create a cool graphic statement on the wall. This client had their wall shelves made custom by a local fabricator.
We are thrilled to announce that Village now has access to order metal wall shelves in many finishes and shelf styles (including matte black and even gold)! Ask a designer from our team today to learn more. This wall in the kitchen design should get bonus points for being on trend because it champions the matte black trend, an up-and-coming trend of metal shelving, and even mixed metals.
A 30″ wide Stainless Steel 5 burner gas range with convection is centered below a stainless chimney-style hood and open metal shelves. This KitchenAid range is ready to tackle any meal task! From baking chicken nuggets to a full-on culinary adventures, it is the MVP of this kitchen appliance package:
- Huge interior capacity at 5.8 cu.ft.
- Aqualift® cleans your oven in less than an hour combining low heat with water to release baked-on spills.
- Even-Heat™ True Convection ensures the inside of the entire oven is heated to, and stays at, the perfect temperature.
- EasyConvect™ Conversion takes your entered conventional settings and converts them for recipes to convection settings for you.
- A Steam Rack offers the ability to add additional moisture to the inside of the oven.
- 5 gas burners underneath Continuous Interlocking Grates let you easily change burners and move pots and pans across the entire cook surface.
One of my favorite features on this range is how much room you have on the cook top with the 5 burners and continuous grates. There is plenty of space to cook your favorite dishes using multiple sized pans all at the the same time. I also love the the satin glide roll out rack. This rack glides out smoothly on ball bearings to full extension making it so much easier to just lift your turkey up instead of having to reach into the oven to remove it.Tammy C- Appliance Expert at Village Home Stores
Trend Spotted: Mixed Metals
Not everything in this kitchen is matte black. In fact, this kitchen is a symphony of mixed metals. Stainless Steel appliances are installed throughout the kitchen. Matte black can be found on the lighting, metal wall shelves, counter stool legs, and even the stair railing near the kitchen. A soft, brushed gold finish is found on lots of accessories as well as the cabinet hardware and Delta kitchen faucet in “Champagne Bronze”.
We love the faucet selection paired with a matte black Elkay E-Granite undermounted kitchen sink. This durable and stylish sink includes a lower center divider allowing for a shallow fill of the sink if needed. Elkay E-Granite sinks are stain and odor resistant and easy to clean (just wash with a damp cloth and soapy water). The sink is made from 80% natural quartz, so these sinks can endure everyday wear and tear while resisting smudges and scratches. These sinks are also heat resistant and did we mention they look amazing?! The colors will not fade either because Elkay E-Granite sinks are UV stable.
Trend Spotted: Versatile Work From Home Spaces
Home office spaces are topping many home trend lists moving forward as a byproduct of the current (as of this post) COVID-19 pandemic. As more adults are seeking work-from-home setups and children and teens also need E-learning locations, one “desk” is not enough for most households. Versatile working spaces within a home have become a valuable and sought-after feature. Open concept kitchens can be a wonderful candidate for a workstation zone. In the photo below you can see the top of a laptop peeking up over the island. This customer is taking advantage of the bright and spacious dining space and has set up a work-from-home area there.
The waterfalled kitchen island has been given an overhang on the top and can also become a great work surface if needed. Space for 4 stools for casual dining can transition to space for two people to comfortably work at this island. Outlets tucked away on each end allow laptops, tablets, and devices to be plugged in without cords traveling all over the room. Another way this new home is ready for busy days at home is the location of the laundry room. No more hiding laundry in a dark corner of your basement. Instead this bright and inviting laundry room is located right down the hall from the great room kitchen.
This top-load laundry pair from Maytag is ready to tackle your largest and dirtiest loads! This washer even includes a sanitize cycle to help remove household bacteria. Stopping the spread of bacteria and germs in our households is at the top of mind for many these days. Check out this past blog about some of our other appliances that include a sanitize cycle. Shop our top load washer selections here online and reach out for any help you need selecting the right one for your household. Did you know that Village can also design cabinet spaces for other areas of your home? Across the room from that gorgeous kitchen is a TV console fit with the same cabinetry and black finish as the kitchen island.
