Not everyone is a sit-in-the-front-row kind of person. Honestly, some of the best concerts and shows this writer has attended have been with seats far back from the stage just to get a better view of the overall show. I mean, nobody is going to turn down front row Beyoncé tickets… but if you can’t be right near the action, take a few steps back for a better view. In the case of this week’s featured project, the best view of the Mississippi River for the great room kitchen was not on the first floor. So when Wood Builders got to work on building this couple’s dream home, the view from the top floor was the focus. How did they know the view was good? They lived on this lot for years. When weighting the options for a complete remodel overhaul vs. a new build, it was decided building a new home was going to be the way to go.
With the new home build, rooms could be larger, and planned out in the best possibly way. The main space we want to show you is the great room kitchen. Frameless, full-access cabinetry from our Wynnbrooke line in the Denali doorstyle and a combination of “White” and “Pewter” paints has been installed in an L-shape layout with an island.
Black Stainless Steel Appliances
A KitchenAid appliance package in Black Stainless Steel includes a combination wall oven and microwave, dishwasher, electric cooktop, range hood, and a french door refrigerator.
This french door refrigerator may be a counter-depth… but it has a LOT of space inside! In fact it just happens to be the largest capacity counter-depth in its class! It includes slide-away shelfs to quickly accommodate taller items without rearranging everything. It also has a self-close freezer drawer that organizes items on three levels: a divided lower drawer with pizza pocket; small-item drawer; and flat-item shelf. Want to take a closer look? Check out this TikTok we made showing you a tour of the inside storage.
One of the benefits of Black Stainless steel appliances is its ability to blend well with stainless steel appliances if needed. Notice the handles and badges are a stainless finish and the rim around the in-door water dispenser is a polished chrome? Those details allow you to select faucets and hardware from any of these metal categories and still have a cohesive look. Many times, the pairing of Stainless with Black Stainless in a kitchen suite happens with a range hood. But there is a chimney style range hood in a matching Black Stainless finish available! The Black Stainless hood option is shown here installed over a glass tile backsplash that extends to the ceiling.
The glass tiles are from the Lustrous Shimmer Glass series by Glazzio Tiles in the “Lush Beige” color and a show-stopping 3″ x 14″ size. The choice of an elongated tile instead of a standard subway tile is a subtle detail that truly gives a dramatic look without being too bold. We love that the homeowner selected mirrored covers for the outlets and wall switches. What a glam detail!
The countertop surfaces in the kitchen are from our Q Quartz line. “Calacatta Laza” is by far one of our most popular designs from this line. It offers up a clean, bright white base with a gray veining giving you the natural marble dupe you dream of. The sink in this kitchen is an undermounted granite composite sink with a low center divider.
A low center divider sink allows you the opportunity to fill one side up enough to soak a few items, but the real estate within the entire sink to wash larger items without making a huge mess around the sink. And with the sink beneath the kitchen window, that leaves the entire kitchen island top to be a solid, smooth surface to work on.
The “Pewter” paint on the kitchen island cabinets is a rich, dark gray color. This paint works great with the Black Stainless Steel appliances instead of a solid Black paint because it gives a better match to the appliance finish when the light reflects on the surfaces. Our Wynnbrooke cabinetry line comes in many door styles and offers a lot of great specialty inserts for your cabinets. Shown below is their pullout spice and oil cabinet.
Open Concept Kitchen
One of the benefits of an open concept approach to a kitchen and living space is the ability to create versatile zones. On the wall opposite of the cooking zone in the kitchen is a row of base and upper cabinets. Of course, this adds lots of storage, but it also includes a long quartz countertop surface. This long surface adjacent to the dining area and out of the way of the kitchen can be used hundreds of ways. Having a party? Set up a food line for guests that keeps them away from your dishes piled in the sink. Hosting a birthday party for your 2 year-old grandchild? Set the gifts here up out of reach from curious kids. Having some friends over for some sunset drinks? Invite the ladies to place their purses over on this countertop (instead of piled into your kitchen island).
Visually separating the two cabinet sections is a tall pub-height dining table. Between this seating and the overhang at the kitchen island, there are many places (and heights) to sit. A taller height table here allows the diners to be up high enough to catch the river view from back across the room.
Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring
The stairs you see in the foreground of the photo above are the main stairs from the first level. We love the combination of gray stained woodwork and metal balusters. Our best-selling CORETec Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring is installed throughout this open concept space. The “Trestle Oak” color in a 7″ x 48″ plank includes many tones of warm grays. COREtec flooring is a durable surface choice and will keep this weathered wood look but gain no weather or wear over the years.
The light fixture hanging above the dining area is from the “Winslow” series by Kichler Lighting. Shown here in a 5 light style in Olde Bronze finish, this series of transitional lighting with seeded glass is available in many styles. Lots of chandeliers as well as pendants, vanity lights, and semi-flush lights. This same light can be installed facing up (shown) or directed down like we show online here. This series is available in Black, Brushed Nickel and Olde Bronze.
We provided all the lighting for this new home inside and out. Check out this covered deck view right off the kitchen on the second floor. With a view like that, you are going to want to sit outside a lot! Plus, second floor river views mean you are up and in the breeze so fewer bugs! Here we installed a 54″ wet-rated outdoor patio fan from Minka name “Sundowner” in an Oil Rubbed Bronze finish. Have an outdoor space that could use a little air flow help? Contact our expert lighting team to ask about our wet-rated fan options.
A Peek at the Primary Bath
The primary bath in this new home deserves a mention as well. It is stunning with Wynnbrooke vanity cabinets repeating the same Denali door and “Pewter” paint from the kitchen island. The Kichler Winslow series of lights were used again but this time as a pair of 3-light vanity fixtures. The bathroom includes two sinks and plenty of cabinet storage including a tall linen cabinet.
Custom Tiled Shower
The custom tiled shower in this primary bath is a walk-in style with a hinged glass door and half-wall built to cap off the vanity cabinet. With so much color and pattern variation in the Egeroy Royal Gray tiles, the accents were made with tile sizes instead of color contrast. A great example of this is the stripe of tile cascading behind the shower head and controls. Installing a 2″ x 2″ band here still draws your eye without introducing a new color or texture to the space.
