PIZZA BABKA INGREDIENTS:
Premade Pizza Crust
Sliced Mozzarella + Provolone Cheese
2 Tbsp. Butter, Melted
½ tsp. each of Garlic Salt, Red Pepper Flakes + Dried Oregano
Grated Parmesan Cheese for Dusting
Salt + Pepper to Taste
Optional: Marinara Sauce or Seasoned Olive Oil for Dipping
On a sheet of parchment paper, roll our dough into rectangle. Begin with a layer of pepperonis. Add sliced cheeses, one side of each. Sprinkle with a pinch of dried oregano and season with salt and pepper. Fold paper over so dough folds in half onto itself. Seal dough together with fingers. Slice down the center vertically to create two long stuffed strips. Twist the two strips together pushing back in any exposed stuffing when able. Move twisted bread into a parchment-lined loaf pan. Place the pan in oven using bread proof setting* or oven light for 20-30 minutes. Remove and preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Melt the butter and add ½ tsp. each of Garlic Salt, Red Pepper Flakes, and Dried Oregano. Brush entire top and any sides within reach with seasoned butter. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese. Pour over any extra butter onto bread. Bake 25-30 minutes at 450 degrees. Let cool on rack ten minutes before slicing and serving. Serve with marinara sauce or seasoned olive oil for dipping.
*WHAT IS BREAD PROOFING?
The What/Why: Bread proofing is a step in baking certain breads that activates the yeast in the dough. Proofing allows the yeast cells to consume the carbohydrates (relatable) and expel the carbon dioxide. This causes the dough to expand/rise.
The How: Many of the ovens available from Village Home Stores have a bread proof setting so first check to see if your oven controls include one. If yours does not have that setting, you can place your dough near the oven light and close the door. We proofed this twisted dough for about 30 minutes using a bread proof setting.
